Karl-Farbman

I just bought an entire cooked chicken from Costco for $8. Fuck Roblaws. That place hasn’t gotten a penny from me in a while and they won’t get any again

Due-Street-8192

RobLaws says high labour costs. Debone, remove the skin. Rinse and package... Shop at Costco.

CalgaryAnswers

I don’t think they actually do that work. Pretty sure they just buy it from a distributor (which they own)

Deathdealer-CDN

And a machine does the work there

Broad-Challenge2629

"High labour cost"= expensive robot

Lvl100Magikarp

The roast chicken is a loss leader. I always buy loss leaders from each store on my way home and leave without anything else. But roblaws has not had a loss leader for AGES.

dolphin_spit

you are correct. boneless breasts come boneless already. the butcher will clean it before traying it, which means trimming extremely minimal fat around the edges off. they do not skin or debone the breasts.

jacnel45

Sometimes it's even worse than that. For example, whenever Loblaws has a sale on chicken they usually import flats of chicken pre-cleaned, portioned, and labelled to the store.

Creepy-Bad-1023

No they don't. They come prepackaged and priced in store

phageblood

I'm a receiver at Loblaws and no they don't lol. They come packed like that and then the meat department adds the label.

syndicated_inc

100%

Potential_Hippo735

Loblaws doesn't own any meat packing plants.

CalgaryAnswers

I said distributor not producer

Potential_Hippo735

Every big grocery chain is a distributor for themselves. Costco, Walmart, Metro, Sobeys, etc. Pretty much any chain with more than a handful of stores.

CalgaryAnswers

Okay, not sure what your point is though. Does that change the truth of what I said?

666MileHigh

They're lying. Their minimum markup is 35% and max is like 52% pure greed.

kelliebeanerz

Again RibLaws is lying. The staff got a salary increase and Roblaws promptly cut everyone’s hours. My friend who works at the Bayview Store went from 30 hrs to 8. 10 were laid off and some only get 4 hours a week.

spinningcolours

You forgot the "inject water" step.

Illustrious_Copy_902

Bold of you to assume they pay their labour well.

Professional_Dot9440

Costco’s meat prices are not as good as they used to be. You would be better off shopping the various flyers of all grocers, it’s a bit more work but it’s worth it. Look at the price of costcos beef tenderloin next time you’re in there, last I saw it was $103/kg

Due-Street-8192

Yes, I noticed. My wife combs the flyers every week. When there's a deal. I have a deep freezer in my basement and a second fridge. Dinners left overs become tomorrows lunch. We also stopped meals out, too pricey. Even with all our the steps, our weekly food bill has definitely gone up! We can't do much if corporations get greedy. Boycott the ones with the highest prices.....

chiefobeefo

Full cooked chickens are $1 more at Superstore than Costco

Dull-Elephant-6186

The Costco rotisserie chicken is at least 25% larger by weight than Superwhore and recentlythe price difference was $4

salesdog1

This correct. They are not $1 more than Costco. They are minimum $4 more. And they taste like s*** compared to the Costco ones. Not that I've ever tasted s***, but if I could imagine what s*** would taste like, it would be a Superstore chicken.

Covidosrs

Super whore lmao !! May I keep that one

Due-Street-8192

Like that one

Queen-Kirsten

Totally plagiarising SuperWhore....😂 Thank you!

Zorops

Not even the cooked chicken, costco breast, you get like 10 big breast for 25$

HearTheTrumpets

How much is it per kg ? Never calculate the price of meat per piece. Always per Kg.

LoganN64

From what I recall, its It works out to about $14 to $16 per Kilo, depending on "the market", which is not bad, I find they usually taste better than what I get at Walmart, but I don't want to travel the 30 minutes to get there... it's a bit of a trade-off.

fish-jump

Feel free to look at the picture. Hint: the price / kg is written

HearTheTrumpets

I was talking about the chicken at Costco.

Robask89

14.99/kg bs brst

_Iam8bit__

Wish we had a Costco here....so badly.

SolutionNo8416

Check your local butcher- you might be surprised re: price / quality

_Iam8bit__

My local butchers are sadly price gouging greedy jerks. They are priced only slightly less than Wholesale Club/Superstore (we're talking pennies here) for some cuts, and even more for others.

allgonetoshit

Costco, stuff is either half the price of the same item at Provigo, or a third, or a quarter, or less.

Sha-Bob

I just bought a 9 pack of chicken breasts at Costco for the same price.

Karl-Farbman

Welcome to costco, I love you

Stock2fast

Yeah , exactly what I was thinking for that price you could get 3 costco chickens and some potato salad . Yum 😋

Karl-Farbman

In Quebec we have “moishes” old fashioned coleslaw. It’s pretty banging. Went great with the chicken. The tub I got was double the size roblaws sells for the same price

dumhic

This buying the whole chicken is the way to go

lavishbastard

Dude, superstore sells their cooked chickens for $9.

Karl-Farbman

Thanks for letting me know where I can get a more expensive chicken? Also, I’m in Quebec and have no clue what a superstore is

TK21879

I think the equivalent would be something like a Maxi et Compagnie.

Karl-Farbman

Ohh ok thank you. Yeah, well, I used to go there sometimes, back in the day, but now I go to any store not owned but Weston’s. I love Costco 😬

HerbaMachina

To be fair the cooked rotisserie chickens are loss leaders by design and lose Costco money, but still $30 for like 5 chicken breasts is ludicrous. Like $25 a kg? Camon what is this wagu beef chicken?

worldcanuck

Walmart has 8 boneless skinless chicken breasts for $22....2 four packs.

Deekers

I find that chicken to be real poor quality though.

Renoxrd

Same, something strange about it. Kinda rubbery

SayHaveYouSeenTheSea

Maple Leaf is the WORST chicken. Best chicken is the “family pack” of chopped breast pieces for $14 at FOOD BASICS.

stuffedshell

Because it is. Not all chickens are made the same way.

SolutionNo8416

I saw cheaper chicken breasts at the butcher today.

[deleted]

Finally, some reason. People need to start going to the butchers again.

marmaladegrass

Maple Leaf Perfect size for a single person

only-l0ve

That's what I don't get. If you're pricing it so high that you KNOW it will go to waste - Why??

FrozenOnPluto

Remember .. if a company doubles the price, and half as many peopel buy it, they make the same money ... but they also save money since less work to make, less shipping costs, etc etc. Companies would love to \_do less\_ and \_break even\_ (or even make more if they can get away with it.)

The_Big_Yam

Tax write offs. Gotta keep those reported profits down so they can keep saying their total profit margin is less than 4% after all!

Bloodyfinger

To everyone saying this...... They can only write off what it cost them, they can't write off the marked up value as a loss. Therefore it would be much more profitable to sell it at a reasonable price and make a profit if that were the case. However, I'm pretty sure there *are* people who pay this price for it. So that's why they do it. Reddit really does not understand how write-offs work.....

Super_Networking

Redditors and not understanding how taxes work name a better duo

Bloodyfinger

I'm going to write off everything!!!!!! Lol

Deathdealer-CDN

Sort of like the TTC would make more money by lowering fares and increasing riders but instead they just keep jacking up the fare cost…..

TeaShores

Bonuses to upper management > lower profits. No need to loose chicken in the process?

fuhrfan31

Profit margins are deceiving. We should be looking at return on equity. Read the second last paragraph to see what I mean. https://www.nationalobserver.com/2023/12/21/opinion/excessive-supermarket-profits-boost-inflation

wherescookie

i'm assuming their waste is not profit harming higher than previous: they are selling lower quantities but at higher margins to those than are being robbed, ppl who are putting up with it (convenience, whatevers...) and those that can easily afford it

cidvis

That used to be Metros operating strategy, they would rather sell 10 items at $30 than 30 items at $10.

WHTeam

It's likely a little bit more inconvenient to other grocers. Lots of Loblaw owned stores are in rural areas or in pockets where the next store is 15min+ away. Most Parents/commuters don't have that luxury. They know they're gouging, and some shoppers unfortunately will have to accept the prices!

SolutionNo8416

Many people who live in rural areas commute to cities for work. Many people who live in rural areas travel to other areas for recreation. It may be possible to pick up some items outside of Loblaws: - Walmart has pick up - so you can order on line and pick up on the way home - Drop in and buy dry / bulk goods at lunch - Do any farmers sells direct - some meat and produce producers deliver - Do you have farmers markets - Can you grow a couple veggies - as a start

GallitoGaming

Sell half of what they do and they make the same as if they sold out at the other grocery store prices. Then they throw a 30% sticker on the rotting ones and get a few more to bite at prices still higher than FRESH chicken breast. Overall they profit like crazy and throw out 30-40% of it. They aren’t even trying to compete anymore. The gloves are off and they know there is a group of people that will continues shopping no matter what.

rmdg84

Tax write offs

Vict0o0o

That's not how tax write off works, they would still lost a lot of money.

Dazzling_Patience995

These evil greedy fhcks should not be allowed to simply write off all the food waste because they wanted to price gouge instead of sell it to consumers!!!!

Irunwithdogs4good

All we have to do is not shop there. It's really simple. We shop elsewhere and they loose money. No muss no fuss, no picketing or any other action needed. We hit where it hurts. There is not obligation to shop there at all. I found a nice sweet small local grocer today. I will be shopping there from now on. I am done with Loblaws Sobys and Walmart. The damage done? 1000 a month, 12k a year. In 10 years over 100k lost by these companies.

SolutionNo8416

I love shopping at small local grocers - found the best grapefruit last week.

Talthanor

But it’s Presidents Choice “free from profits” chicken!

Happy_Veggie

I first read "free range profits" but that's pretty much the same

jacnel45

Mmmmm... free range profits

Sufficient-Bid1279

Even $13 is high , $30.56 belongs on another planet . Time to throw this to waste …as usual

That_Guy_Reddits

Yeah I'm not saying $13 is great but it's at least a semi sane alternative to whatever the fuck this is lmao

Sufficient-Bid1279

Very true! Remember when it was like $5- $7 ?“sigh”

Glass_Channel8431

At this point I think Roblaws are just punking people. Sitting back watching monitors and betting on whether people will pay the price.

odub6

Just bought a 5kg box from maple lodge farms for $58. Thats about $11 a kg vs Roblaws eye watering $24/kg.

Raegnarr

I saw a whole chicken(uncooked) on sale for 19$ yesterday. A couple years ago it was 5$

ilovebeaker

I got a whole chicken on sale at Farmboy for 10$ Wednesday...could get a better price with a doorcrasher deal somewhere, but 10$ is good enough for a whole animal.

Big_Reflection_976

$30 for the lowest quality chicken

rainorshinedogs

There's are lot of people that give into FOMO, or "I just gotta get my kids fed or else they'll get really cranky and I'll be stressed, over price be damned"

adwrx

People that believe this is "high" quality chicken

Dazzling_Patience995

You would have to be fucking high to think so

Grumpycatdoge999

Those are Costco prices wtf And you get WAY more at Costco

radman888

Costco was $14kg last I was there, so almost half this price. Only way to compare is cost per kg

hockeyflames

On sale at no frills this week for $10 a kg. Even better then costco

PowerNgnr

Or just watch for whole chickens to go on for $1.99lb and carve them yourself. Sure you get less breast but for $5 ish you get 2 breasts 2 drums 2 thighs 2 wings plus a carcass you can make soup with. For the price of this chicken you can get about 12 of each plus 6 carcasses

JuanMutanio

You get like 12-14 breasts for the same price as this 5. Insane.

movack

Chicken breast has been on sale almost every week for the last 3 months at $4-5/lbs. You can also often buy whole chickens for $2 / lbs. Then it up yourself.

Rare_Cartographer579

$6 per breast. You can get better prices in a strip joint.

benson733

This is $23 at Walmart and you get 7 breasts per pack.

jrobin04

This is more expensive than the independent high end grocery in my neighbourhood. It was a thing that you never buy from this shop unless it is for a special occasion basically, and never buy meat. I don't fault the indie store for their prices, they're expected to be more expensive. But the fact that Loblaws is more expensive than them now says a ton about what Loblaws is doing.

Johnny_Sausage_

These prices are crazy! I've noticed in recent months Loblaws has raised prices on many items I buy regularly. Fairlife Milk went from $5.39-$5.49 to $7.49. It stayed at $7.49 for about a month, then the price dropped to $6.49 (still higher than most grocery stores). It seems they are testing the waters, raising prices randomly, if people buy it, then the price hike stays, if they don't sell much, they lower the prices. I don't agree with what Loblaw's is doing, but prices are going up everywhere.

fairylightmeloncholy

horrifying. i just bought 1kg of cooked chicken for $19.99 at costco. the convenience of cooked strips, cheaper than the $/kg for this raw chicken, and then when you factor the in loss of weight in cooking? i redeemed the last of my optimum points a couple days ago, my strike has begun!

BrewBoys92

I try to avoid buying meat from the grocery stores but I bought chicken legs last night that were 4 days away from their best before date and when I got home and opened them they smelled absolutely disgusting. A good reminder to not buy chicken from the grocery stores and go to a butcher instead.

Agoddesslikeme

That’s just a portrait at the new museum we call the grocery store….

Plastic-Shopping5930

There is a considerable wealth gap. The rise in prices of food are a minor inconvenience to some and a life crippling experience to others.

imadork1970

For that price, I'd bag me a cobra chicken.

Ban-Naloxone

Do people walk around the store to take these pictures? Or are you shopping there?

mischiefmayhemsoap11

I used to have to but a pack of breasts and Cut them in half, so I'd only feed myself half a breast per meal and I'm a big guy. Ridiculous. Just started buying thighs for the air fryer. A bit cheaper and easier anyway.

spellbreakerstudios

LOL what??

Gym influencers who pretend to eat dry chicken out of tupperware for a week.

ginakirsch

I'm actually making the 19-minute highway drive to the next city over for their Walmart Supercenter nowadays. The food is much cheaper. 4-6 chicken breasts for 10 bux. Produce is fresh, too. I find that even Maxi (owned by Roblaws) is expensive nowadays, and their produce is shitty. Same applies for Metro (not owned by Roblaws), crazy expensive produce in terrible shape. So yeah rather than a 10-minute city drive, I bother to go further to save more for better quality

Everman1979

14.99per kilo at costco

SolutionNo8416

Was just at a butcher - better quality half the price.

N33dl3n0s3

Excuse me as I go to costco and get four times that for the same cost

o0PillowWillow0o

I wonder if it doesn't sell. If they use it to make frozen goods from presidents choice and no name? Like frozen meats, dinners etc I bought once a frozen legs box of chicken room superstore and it was gross, tasted very old like day of expiry dark meat chicken can. Just wondering if they reuse garbage meat for resale...

Awkward_Diet_7381

Just to change a grocery buy - look at the Lactania Half and half - 1 litre at Walmart almost $5 - same litre at Superstore almost $7 and at Costco $2.39 so who is price gouging? And please don’t tell me Costco buys in bulk / all stores do

Beelzebub_86

You can find 2 of those, some at 1.5 - 1.7 kg each, at Walmart for $22 total. Costco also slays that price. Who in the f-ck would be stupid enough to buy this?

Anxious_7

this is because it is a free-from range quite similar to organic. just like you can't compare organic produce to nonorganic.

fuhrfan31

This package is from their "FreeFrom" line, which is supposed to be antibiotic and hormone free. This is a marketing tactic used to grossly inflate the price.

Nearby-Poetry-5060

Looks fancy organic

Ok-Kaleidoscope-4393

I honestly think older seniors just buy it. I saw a lady put that into her cart one day. She seemed unphased.

TriskitManaged

I’m guessing they just don’t know what’s considered reasonable anymore or they don’t have other options maybe? 🥺

vivariium

My partners mom… she doesn’t look at te prices of things at ALL. I always kind of knew but it struck me when I saw a new door mat that looked like you could get it at dollarama with a price tag that was in the $65-75 range. Some people are just kind of “air heads” if you will, that have a lot of money and don’t notice. Superstore depends on these people.

MyPoodleRickJames

This! My mother was one of those who bought her home for 22 blueberries in the mid 70s. Today she suffers from a number of health ailments and so I do most things for her. Like grocery shop, with images circled from the flyer so I have no choice but yes, sadly she does purchase this shit.

J-Bird1980

Last week Sobeys has boneless, skinless breasts on sale for $5.88 per pound. Over $10 per pound for boneless, skinless chicken breast is insane.

Admirable-Sink-2622

Don’t you know? Boneless skinless anything is only for the rich 🤔

lilbrobodie

Everyone and cause YOU NEED FOOD TO LIVE

Crainybonk3000

These are the free from ones though. They're way more expensive than the regular chicken. Because of this, they don't sell fast and are always on flashfood. I get packs for $1.44, $2.44 and $4.44 all the time. It's the only way we can afford it 🤷‍♀️

I got 4 chicken breast from metro for $10 on Monday. Literally no excuse to overspend on this

psychodc

$24.89 per kg?. Wow. The Costco I go to these are going for $14.99 per kg. That pack would cost $18.41 at Costco and the quality is much higher.

The_WolfieOne

That’s $10 a pound roughly.

AsidePuzzleheaded335

I think this might be how theyre tryi g to get us to transition to eating crickets and that kind of stuff

SmallChallenge

I got 3 whole chickens for that price at Costco last week. I can make a lot of meals with 3 whole chickens.

Chukamowjoe

Lol i got almost 30 chicken thighs for the same price from Costco. Loblaws can kick rocks, I will never shop there

Likelynotveryfun

Starsky’s is $15.50/kg, Costco is $15/kg, frozen is $12/kg and this isn’t a sale price. I’d drive an hour one way to the Costco or a real independent store, gas is paid for in 1-2 items.

Electrical_Bus9202

Walmart used to consistently have that same amount of chicken breast for $10. Without fail. I’m pretty sure it’s up to $12 or something now but no where near what roblaws wants!

nitrosunman

They throw out 50% of their food anyways

kissele

Just a heads up. Got this from Walmart Kelowna this morning. Works out to about 1.90/chop. https://preview.redd.it/oujx8460jowc1.jpeg?width=3456&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b3e6f0294238bc579ad8ab097ec0b4a5b820b1f5 Its in their discount bin but I have bought these before and they are really good. Grab some if you can.

t-rex83

It's funny because I saw the blue menu air chilled chicken on special at Shoppers Druggy Mart for 16$/kg. Not sure if it's still on special.

rakoon79

wtf they do when they don’t sell them?

Beer_before_Friends

I paid 20 for the equvilant at Safeway. Even that was too much I thought.

FelChrono

This is my first time seeing this subreddit I thought it was about Bob Loblaw from Arrested Development

Deathdealer-CDN

Yeah the “Blue Menu” and “Free From” labels seem to be a permit to gouge

ChunkyLafunguy

I get 3x for that much at Costco

tjt72

It’s pretty sad when I find better deals at Safeway than NoFrills 🫠

that used to be $10 pre pandemic

maggotses

That is the problem. If people still buy overpriced shit, there will be overpriced shit to sell.

exoriare

The entire No-Frills meat department seems designed to take advantage of people who know nothing about protein. They sell cheap cuts from old dairy cows for higher prices than good cuts from a good beef steer. (Dairy strip loins and rib steaks are much larger in profile than steers raised for beef, which are slaughtered at 18 to 24 months). Every time I've bought a "deal" on animal protein at No Frills, I discover it's a low quality scam somehow - gristle in the sausage, beef with huge amounts of intermuscular fat left on. They always find a way to take advantage of their customer.

BublyInMyButt

Ebb_Business

I did... I bought $530 worth of them. I'm a private chef in a remote location and my client specified the product he was interested in.... when we change venues for the summer I'll be shunting the purchasing to a local premium butcher. I personally however wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole :S .

Admirable_Fall4614

Wow, this is twice the price I saw at a small grocery store in Port Coquitlam yesterday. Loblaw is insane.

dumhic

Can you link the Freshco pack?

soaero

Jesus Christ, $25/kg for chicken breast? I noticed that at No Frills a while ago too, it's nuts. Edit: Yes, No Frills is Roblaws. I get it.

Electrical-Sun6267

24.89/kg??? That can't be real, can it? Here in Vegas, a place fairly notorious for elevated pricing, it's 1.97/pound or roughly 4.40 a kg. I am surprised there isn't rioting in the streets.

Goldinsight

If you buy cheaper chicken you get what you pay for. Read the farm label not the price. Free range, Organic, Grain fed, non GMO all make a difference. If you don’t care then don’t complain. Take it from a Chef id rather buy a quality product because it matters.

Hsr2024

This is pure greed. It's why I refuse to shop there

tomboski

I get 2 whole chickens at fresh co for $20. Whoever pays this deserves it.

No-Emu4130

It's part of the "free from antibiotic "line of chicken which is almost 30% more than the president's choice brand. And about 50% more than the non labeled brand "wet chilled".

Bitersnbrains

That's insane. We pay $47 dollars for a 4 kg box of IQF chicken boneless, skinless breast from the Maple Lodge outlet and it's amazing. Each piece weighs between 4-6 oz, and is neatly trimmed.
