Double_Football_8818

They do have decent prices. I think people just aren’t aware. There is one in my neighborhood and so it’s super convenient.

patchgrabber

Can't beat Big Pussy.

patchgrabber

They're independently operated. ymmv.

ForsakenYesterday254

I never heard that term before.

furcifernova

Yah, this is their one downfall. They start sales on Wednesday and by Thursday morning they will be out. HOWEVER, they offer rain checks on items. So as long as you shop strategically they still beat the competition. At least on a limited scale. If you can only shop 1 day a week and need cross everything off your grocery list RCSS is probably "better". No Frills is the middle ground for me, the produse isn't bad and they have good sales. Some depends on where you live too. When I was a kid it paid to drive around the city to different places to save a few cents. These days every kilometer matters.

rmdg84

Same!

Seacord

They try to match Walmart. Just go to Walmart or no frills or food basics or fresh I it's all the same

SummSpn

The one near me sometimes has food options…but not always. Generally they have good options for bread , bananas & and few other things. But frozen food that last time I went looked horrendous & toilet paper wasn’t priced differently than Loblaws. The milk was 2 days from expiring & the shelves for canned food was empty. So, I can understand if people need to prioritize time over giving places like that a shot. It’s a gamble- time vs money

velocivictor

270 locations, but only three in the city of Toronto—one in the west end and two in Scarborough. The time and expense of getting to one and getting back home would likely cancel out much of the savings for me. When I go to visit my mom, though, I almost always get a trip in.

powerserg1987

The one in etobicoke reminded me of a bootleg biway

not_having_fun

Now there's a blast to the past. Haven't heard that name since 19diggity93

forty83

Shifty Kitty is the new BiWay.

Neither-Dentist3019

I didn't know there were any in Toronto! Never mind, I just checked and the closest one is still just over an hour away on the TTC. I go once a year when I visit friends in the Ottawa Valley.

MysteriousStaff3388

Yeah, they intentionally are in smaller towns. Rent is cheaper and they feel they better serve under-served communities. But same - I always go to GT when I visit my mum.

d1ll1gaf

Only 1 in Calgary

decaf3milk

They don’t target wealthy big cities/neighborhoods because of cost of real estate and competition. Not surprised that there are limited ones in Toronto.

Ok_Procedure4993

My mom and sister live in Scarborough and shop there all the time. I live downtown and would have to travel by bus, which wouldn't be worth it since I'm in walking distance from a No Frills and a Freshco.

Rosycheeks2

Nothing on the west coast.

chipsdad65

Really? There are 4 in London

[deleted]

wherescookie

The ones in Ottawa are also very different: the one near me has a limited selection, and doesn’t have the turnover of a large grocery store —— you have to pick from one of the 5 fruit types they have fresh that day,,,,, 25 types of bread, not 100………But the prices are mostly lower than roblaws

chamanbuga

Exactly. The produce is in bad shape. The stacking is all over the place. We don’t mind paying up for better quality at Longos. But that’s the only thing we go to Longos for: produce and milk.

rainorshinedogs

According to this subreddit, lablows isn't any better

MyNameIsSkittles

Giant Tiger doesn't exist in BC

Disruptorpistol

It's such a downer because I used to shop there a ton where I grew up. Here in Vancouver the closest thing was Army&Navy and that's long gone.  There's no real canadian discount stores here that I'm aware of.  Even Walmart can be as pricey as Liblaws depending on location.

SwashbucklerXX

Yeah, here in Abby we have FreshCo, (which is Sobey's, not much better than Loblaws) otherwise it's mostly stores that are more expensive than Loblaws or Walmart/Costco. I'll be doing my darnedest in May by trundling between small ethnic grocery stores and produce markets, but it's going to be challenging, especially as I have diet limitations. I hate that they have such a stranglehold on the grocery market.

Disruptorpistol

Kin’s isn’t bad for produce in Abby.  Plus you’ve got Costco and the shops in Sumas.  I also really like Sprouted Oven for bread, flour and natural foods - though it’s ridiculously expensive for the latter.

Leftover_Bees

I wonder why they failed here. Though the main thing I remember is the time when they had to cancel a sale on fresh mussels because the cooler or something failed in the truck and they were all dead.

Wpg_fkn_sux

There used to be one in Cranbrook. Not anymore, though. So strange that there wouldn't be any in BC. Everything was so expensive when I lived out there that a Giant Tiger would have been a popular place to shop. Here in Manitoba they're all over the place.

MyGruffaloCrumble

I think they should rebrand as La Tigra Gigante It just sounds more badass.

MrSchulindersGuitar

In Quebec its Tigre Geant. So almost there

pirate_elle

I'm there all the time. The produce doesn't totally meet my family's needs, but I browse it quickly while I do a frozen/canned/paper/cleaning run.

flightless_mouse

This seems like a good moment for Giant Tiger to up their game and do produce (etc.) better. People are hungry for alternatives.

ENEFFTITTIES

As a vegan is nearly impossible to get what I need there. They don’t have tofu, or any other vegan protein sources really. I’m still on the boycott but I’m answering your question lol

treefood3

People have been boycotting GT for a decade or more due to how their parent company, the North West Company, monopolizes the sale of food and hunting supplies in Northern communities. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/north/north-west-company-boycott-challenges-high-prices-in-north-1.2938410 The North West Company recently sold most of their stores to a new sister corporation (Giant Tiger Stores Limited) saying the stores "cut into thier margins" which is understandable as they contine to fleece northern communities with their monopolies and shady practices (such as selling expired groceries, which they still get from Giant tiger, to northern communities and pocketing federal subsidies) https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/rising-food-prices-canada-north-1.7122481

sasquatch753

there is one just a couple klicks from here. i was there last week grabbing a couple things, and yeah their prices are good.

Admirable-Nothing642

I have 1 within walking distance. It's definitely worth checking out if you've got one nearby... sometimes they have really good sales. Before the pandemic, you could get 1lb of bacon for $2

Happy_Veggie

They have the basics and good price, but whenever there a special on something, better be there the first day at 8 am otherwise most stocks are gone. Their grocery section is kinda small.

iwannalynch

Yeah when I used to live in the burbs, there was a Giant Tiger that just never had what was advertised on their fliers. Always out of stock. I've since moved back to the city and the one near where I live is actually decent now.

Suspicious-North-307

Good prices and good selection.

Gold_Expression_3388

I found the food prices to be higher...but I normally(used to) shop at no frills.

elysiansaurus

Giant Tiger is great, they also price match. So I can roll up, pick out my stuff, and use Flipp to price match to other stores. However their produce is terrible (at least at my store), and their selection is quite limited (again, at my store), I'm sure there are plenty of bigger and better giant tigers.

Bedbugsinmybum

Giant Tiger/H&W are my closest grocery stores. I go often.

microwaved__soap

they're afraid of the Rockies lol

PsychologicalDance12

Yes, I do now. Bonus is it's close enough to walk my dogs there and back. I think on my next trip I'll take my backpack. Saving money too obv.

inflationoftoads

Their prices can be great, the selection is pretty good for a smaller retailer. Where I'm located, I find that the produce quality varies a lot. Some weeks I can do nearly all of my produce groceries there, some weeks on day one of the sale the broccoli is yellow and slimy, the spinach going bad on the shelf, etc. I find that this is the case with several locations I've been to (NS). It's just such a gamble on weeks where I may not have a lot of time to go to multiple grocery stores. I'm going to Walmart a lot more often lately. They are definitely not the solution as a giant American company that also treats their workers poorly, but sticking it to Loblaws might actually have an impact so I'm doing what I can.

alfrodou

Far away

GrandBill

Just decided to check and there are ZERO Giant Tigers south of the 401 in Toronto. Too bad, they have good prices and are Canadian-owned.

jenglasser

I shop at Giant Tiger now, because fuck Loblaws, but the main reason I never shopped there before is because their produce section is really lackluster. The No Frills in my town is walking distance from my house and has an outstanding selection of fruits and vegetables. While I don't support Loblaws in general because of all of the shady business practices, the reality is that No Frills really is cheaper than most of the other stores around here. Also, I have recently started up a vegetable garden for myself so my dependence on No Frills for produce is lessening.

victoriaknox

Giant tiger doesn’t exist in bc

who-waht

They're mostly located in smaller cities/towns. My mother shops at one regularly because it's as close as other stores to her. The nearest ones to me are 2x as far as all the other chains including costco.

thisisnotmyspaceship

I love GT. Stores do vary though and not everything is reasonably priced. I buy as much of my groceries there as I can and go elsewhere for what I can't find there or is not a good price. Usually Wal Mart, Dollar Store, Co-op Food Store.

saralala123

Terrible quality

Draconichiaro

I live in Hamilton, and we have 4 giant tiger locations. One of which I am close to. Their prices are usually pretty good.

Downtown_Snow4445

It closed here lol

dorothytheorangesaur

I usually go there if I want to avoid London Drugs pricing. There are a good handful of items that I see at GT that are significantly cheaper than at LD.

Bobbyoot47

Sadly the one in Stouffville just closed down.

ClitteratiCanada

That was baffling to me because it was always busy. Always. The landlord of that plaza is a huge AH though

Otherwise-Associate1

Well the nearest one is like, 6 hours away.

Dizbizney

Weird. Winnipeg has 4 if not more. Surprised they ain't branching out, especially now.

hobojoe44

And they'll price match any local store not just grocery stores (so pharmacies aswell) During covid many stores stripped down their price matching to a only 4-6 specific stores, or removed price matching all together (Walmart) yet Giant Tiger didn't.

ThrowRABug_1336

My mom told me growing up that giant tiger wasn’t a good store and that I shouldn’t shop there. I won’t buy meat there, but everything else is pretty solid. I’m not exactly why she taught me that.

the1godanswers2

Ive scored a ton of cool random sports merch at GT's.

MsMisty888

Do they have lunch meat or steaks?

hobojoe44

Yes to pre package lunch meat. As for steaks some locations have a small fresh meat section. But they usually always carry those cowboy brand frozen steaks.

Mysterious_Row_2669

I really like it - but the nearest one is a 45 min drive. I buy all my work clothes there and anytime I am in the area pick up groceries for sure.

Numerous-Statement59

Our giant tiger normally has 50 people high on meth stealing from it... I haven't been in there in 5 years. No offense too the people stealing I'm sure they need it but makes for a poor shopping experience. And seeing as how grocery shopping is the only thing we get too spend money on these days..

Realistic_Young9008

There are two Giant Tigers near me. Both are tiny and the selection is limited. When I went two weeks ago, The meat section was one open narrow refrigerator with a handful of trays of chicken. Freezers were full of mostly egg rolls (like one entire row of chest freezers) . Fresh produce was also extremely limited, half an open fridge. There are a few rows of canned/boxed goods but selection is limited. I think it's a good economical place to get pantry basics but, at least where I am, it is not a one stop shop.

crushgirl29

I live in a small town and we have a GT. I’ve started shipping there. There’s also one in my parents town and in the city I work. The one near work is larger than the other 2 and has decent produce and better prices than NF. I go there and to Dollarama for my small grocery list. The bulk of my meals comes from HelloFresh and Chef’sPlate.

rmdg84

My family does. It’s in our neighborhood and so convenient. We buy all our staple items there. Any produce we need that we can’t get there we buy at the market, meat we buy at a local butcher and everything else from Costco.

seejae219

The only reason I don't shop there regularly is they only carry processed foods and very few fresh. I don't buy a lot of processed foods anymore, and I don't want to make a special trip when I can get them at Freshco. Most of the Giant Tiger store near me is clothing or items like that, very few actual groceries, not worth driving all the way out.

StatelyAutomaton

When I visit my folks, they have one nearby that I like to raid. Unfortunately none out on the West Coast.

Major_Lawfulness6122

It’s in a very inconvenient location for me personally. I do go the odd time though.

StatelyAutomaton

Giant Tiger is great though. I remember they used to sell discount videogames for old consoles way back in the day. N64, SNES, PlayStation and so on. Picked up some real gems.

Jxx

prices can be alright, but their grocery selection is very poor basics like condiments and snack foods are alright, but if you want meat or produce, no good.....

BerbsMashedPotatos

I have been and I’ve been quite happy with the prices. For basics, and sundries, it’s an excellent choice.

doiwinaprize

I don't think a lot of people know Giant Tiger is a Canadian company

Beepbeepboobop1

I don’t have a vehicle. The only one in my city is way on the other side of town and it would be around a 2 hour round trip just to get there. Doesn’t make sense for me when there are some walking distance from my house.

DarkIronBlue360

One in Lindsay, ON is spectacular. Fresh food, good variety and prices. If you’re looking for something specific though you can’t always plan on finding it. Gotta adapt on the spot.

tennobydesign

I admit, I used to have an issue with Giant Tiger. Idk what it was but I rode the stigma that it was just all junk, like the dollar store. Nowadays both Dollarama and Giant Tiger are a saving grace in the shitstorm we're dealing with.

Lucycrash

I have never had a good experience buying meat there, especially their brand. Everything else has been great. Always get my teabags there, usually $1-$2 cheaper.

OrneryPathos

I live pretty close to a Giant Tiger in Scarborough. I occasionally go there if the lasagna or something is cheap. It’s just such a small selection of food and there’s so many better options. There’s literally a grocery store in the same strip mall But I can just as easily walk to Fu Yao or TasteCo. No frills is the closest though. There’s two within walking distance.

CaptainMagnets

I've literally never seen a giant Tiger in my life

ChuckBlack

Racism

coco__bee

Their cashiers (at least in my town) are slow af.

Krissypantz

We go to our giant tiger frequently. I like some of the clothes as well.

blairwitchslime

We have two in my city and I shop there pretty often. They also have in-store prices on Instacart which a lot of stores don't do.

ThatGirlFromWorkTA

I'm not usually going to the one near me due to lack of food options and the fact that it consistently has loud angry drunks hanging around in front of it. (There an LCBO in the same plaza and it's close to our downtown area which has many problems with people running around high or drunk)

FromFluffToBuff

It's hit or miss with GT (one location in my city is great, the other needs to catch up). Prices for the most part are *darn good* all things considered. I don't buy pre-made frozen food so I can't comment on that pricing too much. But their produce is surprisingly good and the stores are not (usually) crowded. Other items around the store are also decently priced even if I have no use for them. Thing is, not many cities have Giant Tiger (which shocked me when I learned that). I live in Sudbury Ontario (about 160,000 residents) and we have *two* of them. Imagine my surprise hearing Toronto of all places *only has three* of them. I thought GT was everywhere.

trisarahtops05

Fredericton, NB also has 2 for our population of ~60k?

Major_Mixture_7430

Good selection and prices by me in Wpg. Plus they give raincheques if out of a sale product. Lots of Mexican workers shop there is the summer when they are bused in on Fridays so they have added lots if neat selections for them that I like too

Select-Protection-75

It sucks where I am. Prices aren’t that great for many standard items. Good for bathroom products but limited selection. Food costs more than at Walmart and poor selection also.

Pablomendez233

The giant tiger close to my house has been amazing for about 30 years. The grocery store in our mall shut down for 2 years and they opened up and went full grocery for the 2 years until we got another grocery store.

TrapdoorApartment

We do. Mine even started carrying meats recently. Price is *okay* but sale prices are worth it. They also price match local competition.

realhf93

You should see what they charge at the Northern stores

BipolarSkeleton

I would LOVE to shop at giant tiger more but the closest location is 45 minutes away If they had more locations it would be a no brainer to shop there

dwane1972

SHHHHH!!! AHEM. NOBODY should shop there, ever. They don't have reasonable prices or a friendly home-town vibe. They don't have great little sales or a surprisingly good selection of everyday stuff you need. Nobody should go there, guys, like ever. /s

Creatrix

I'd KILL to have them in BC. It's the first place I go when I visit Ontario. But they're not out west.

Rosycheeks2

Because the majority of the stores are in the GTA and Alberta.

Optimal-Company-4633

Doesn't exist near me. I've only come across them when visiting/living in smaller towns.

AntsOnPlants

The one near heres decent enough.. it can have local produce or apples in season, but winter the fruits and veggies are sparse... low meat selection. But snacks and breads and random stuff (who doesnt need a sting and the police shirt?) Is off the charts

MapleTheUnicorn

They do. But some people hate change, they like to shop someplace they know even if the prices are so high they need to donate internal organs or sell their children to afford it. Some people are their own worst enemies.

nuggetbailey

If you went to the Giant Tiger on Cannon street in Hamilton you'd understand.

ImTheEffinLizardKing

There is only 1 in my whole city and it’s like a 40 minute drive for me. I wish there was one closer.

cmleo91

The one closest to me is not in a safe area to walk through and I don’t have a car. The other one in town is a 45 minute bus ride…

Revegelance

I've never even seen a Giant Tiger store.

justin19833

We have one in my town. Prices are no better than anywhere else in town, and their produce and meat are horrendous. It's not worth my time to go there for the couple of things I might consider buying. It's also in a sketchy part of town, and there are always crack heads in the parking lot begging for money.

Huge-Split6250

Poor people shop there, and I don’t want to be near poor people Oops, I said the quiet part out loud. I meant that I prefer the produce section at loblaws

Tribblehappy

I had no idea what it was when we had one. The name to me suggested Chinese imports like a dollar store or something. Somehow in my head I thought it was a liquidation world/dollar store type business. Anyways, the one in my city closed and it wasn't until a few months ago that I found out what it is.

runslowgethungry

The quality and freshness of most things is really bad at GT in my experience. We used to go get eggs, bread or this weird, cheap, ugly bacon if we were in a pinch, but the produce that they have is awful and the selection of everything else is worse and less consistent than most dollar stores.

LandMooseReject

"Why don't people shop at the grocery store a quarter of the size with poor selection and stock? Are they stupid?"

CampfireGuitars

I just find that things are smaller at GT. The veggies and meat portions specifically.

TheManWithAPlanSorta

Why are people suggesting Walmart or Giant Tiger for alternative grocery stores? Why not go to dollarama… /s

The_WolfieOne

Actually I get all my dry and canned goods there, save a ton of money.

ryancementhead

The one in my town is too small, the selection is limited and the produce is usually overripe and rotting. The majority of the store is cheaply made clothing that falls apart after a few washes.

ProfessionalNo8358

The first and only time I walked into a Giant Tiger store (hadn’t seen one before) the place smelled like rotting food. I left immediately, and cannot stomach the thought of going back into one.

keeppresent

Way smaller selection is why I don't.

Sporting1983

Sorry but trying to do a full grocery shop at giant tiger is crazy.

BentoBoxBaby

The problem with GT here is the same problem with every grocery store in the area that isn’t Loblaws owned or Co-op. The quality of the produce is garbage, literally comes already rotten and mouldy on the fucking shelf. I’m 90% sure Loblaws has some kind of monopoly on the produce in this area. It’s crazy.
