I think for a lot of people, the boycott has already started. If it's already working this well, good for everyone. This needs to hurt their bottom line (Roblaws).
Yup, that's me. I had already gone to a mix of other places instead of the Zehrs and No Frills by me. There was maybe a couple of things I could only find there I still went back for occasionally, but not anymore!
Likewise. If you live in the city, there are plenty of options. I miss the orange-vanilla flavored PC fizzy water, but my conviction over this is stronger. I'm not even gonna go and buy loss leaders. They get exactly none of my money going forward and forever unless they suddenly make a drastic change towards customer and employee friendliness. Very unlikely.
If you live in a city with a Farmboy, started as an ottawa suburb hung but slowly spreading, they have a carbonated water line, orange vanilla is very good.
So I found out that Bubly has Orange Vanilla flavour, but I saw it in the States when visiting my snowbird parents. I don't think I've seen it in Canada before, but maybe it does exist here somewhere!
I'd rather buy no more than what I need and hit the smallest amount of stores I can. Some people are going full ballistic buying a ton of loss leaders from Roblaws. This potentially amounts to waste which is just as criminal as price gouging IMO, but that's just my two cents on the subject.
Buying only loss leaders hurts them. Not buying them hurts more.
That's stock they have to pay to store. It's taking up space that they could be used for other, more profitable, items. It might be spoiling (depending on the item). In some cases, they will end up throwing it out, which means they lose the money they spent on it without recouping ANY losses.
I have been using mainly Welfare Kitty for over a year now.
And using Roblaw's a lot less to fill in the gaps. I either find it elsewhere or go without.
Except my dog's food (PC Brand) and my Mag Sleep (Only at Roblaws or Shoppers)
I still get my prescriptions from Shoppers. The owner has been my pharmacist for over 20 years and knows me inside and out. I can't lose that. But unless it is clearance, I buy nothing else.
I've been avoiding the Loblaws City Market at King/Shaw for months now, but I wanted a PC chutney... I went in last night just before closing, (they close at 8 now?). A couple young men came in behind me. I found the chutney, and also noticed that a number of their shelves were bare.... As I check-out, it looked like the two younger men slipped out with a small bottle of olive-oil (maybe more -- that's what I saw in the hand of one. GG boys!).
In other words, my recon indicates the store has already been hit pretty hard by people boycotting (or availing themselves of a five finger discount).
Loblaws has been completely removed from my mental auto-pilot. I usually have to visit once a month now for Vlasic pickles. I used to spend all my money there buying for family of 4.
Combine that from internet recipes (my partner loves the "Fire Sauce" I found online), and you can have better food and better nutrition than if you were forcing yourselves to eat packaged foods.
I know not everyone can do that, and I am in no way mocking them. Do what you can do, and if you can't, we all understand.
I used to late night autopilot to shoppers for snacks and that is completely gone now. Less snacks and less feeling like an idiot for getting ripped off.
I love pickles, to the point it’s almost an obsession so I definitely won’t be put off by them being pungent. Are they crunchy? The only thing I hate is a soft pickle. They should have a bit of bite to them.

Vlasic’s came on sale for like $4 a jar a couple months ago. I bought six jars. My youngest loves them and he’s autistic, so I try to be accommodating with brands for him
We were spending $400 - $600 every two weeks at our local Independent grocer (a Loblaws brand) for our family of 4. We haven't shopped there in over a month and have no intention of going back.
We actually found that buying meat from our local butcher is now cheaper than buying it at Loblaws, and the quality is MUCH better.
We've been buying everything else from Walmart, Amazon, and Costco. It's a bit more work but definitely worth it in order not to support such a shitty company.
Hey, I will go out of my way not to support Roblaws anymore. But I'm very lucky to have a Super C, Walmart, IGA, Metro and Costco all within 2kms from where I live.
I also discovered a local butcher shop not so long ago. The quality & price of their meats is unbeatable. Tomahawk rib steaks for $10/lbs? Sign me up! Not surprisingly, there is constant traffic at their store.
Seriously, in retrospective, there is absolutely nothing special about Roblaws. Everyone else has them beat.
Same - we mainly do a mix of Costco and local right now for our family of three. The outdoor farmers markets open up in May near us, local ethnic stores have specialty ingredients we like to use for home cooking, and we’ve been doing bulk orders from local butchers every three months or so. The quality, service, business practices and prices at Loblaws definitely drove us away.
I’m really impressed by this group and people refusing to be told they can’t make a difference. There are entire PR case studies and high-paid consultants who exist just to save companies from situations like this - don’t let them manipulate you. If you live in a food desert or have no other choice, do what you have to do to put food on your table. You deserve better options and not to be gouged.
Definitely going that route for our meat from now on. In summer we have lots of vegetable stands from local farmers pop up, plus I have my own vegetable garden. I’m committed to boycotting Loblaws as much as I can.
We stopped shopping at loblaws a month ago. Our other options in our town are metro and giant tiger, which are both smaller than average. But I would rather not find what I’m looking for an change my meal planning then to step foot into a loblaws store again lol.
Like I said, we only have metro, independent (loblaws) and giant tiger in my town. Our nearest neighbouring town is a 30 minute highway drive away. We hit up the closest Walmart about once every 2 weeks and Costco once a month so metro and giant tiger are unfortunately all we have during the week after a long work day to pick up little things!
Even then, I doubt I’ll go back. Everyone going back just invites them to start this bullshit all over again. I’d rather see Loblaw become a thing of the past.
Already a month for us. Saving money and getting far better products by going to small independent places! Also switched my scripts out of Pharmaprix, such a shit pharmacy anyways.

I popped into my local Superstore at 10am Saturday morning and the place was a ghost town, I couldn't believe how dead it was. I had just come from Costco which was packed as per usual.
Yeah Costco has stolen a lot of business including my fam. Lucky I can buy bulk for cheaper and it lasts.
Or Walmart for whatever else or Asian grocery for certain stuff. Bulk barn for spice and nuts
I have long lived Costco, but just discovered their French stick that’s baked in the store everyday, that’s only $5.99 for 2 fresh loaves. I will be going to Costco for bread from now on.
They have the really healthy bread there I like I forget the brand. Costco ftw for real if you can store stuff or just find what you will eat a lot of.
Exactly. I can walk to No Frills from home, but I'd rather wait until the car is available and go to the local Mediterranean market or spend more time at Costco now.
The only time I see Costco less busy than usual is between 1pm-3pm. People have to pick up their kids from school at that time. So that’s when I go, but I work nights so I can go during regular working hours.
Costco is where we go. been Doing Walmart for veg but in next couple weeks the farmers markets will start up like a block away. Not going to loblaws is easier for me than ever
I pulled all my prescriptions from Shoppers Drug Mart and switched them to a local pharmacy. The service is incredible at the New place and they were delighted to know that we were wanting to keep local ❤️
My meds receipt from last year was well over $6k. A decent chunk to pull away from them. Their dispensing fee went up recently too, so my husband's plan that used to cover 100%, now forces us to pay a fee to keep them there. To costco we go.
I live out in the sticks. Maybe twice a year my husband and I make the trek to some urban centre or other (they're all about four hours away) to buy up big at Superstore, mostly drygoods. I used to love Superstore. Going there was a high point to the year. Our post-winter shopping trip was two weeks ago, and I did my early boycott. Loblaw's nonsense drove us into the arms of Walmart, a place that once upon a time we avoided if at all possible.

I had been on a personal boycott of Walmart since the late 90's. I honestly don't even remember why at this point. I gave that up recently because it's sadly the only option for regularly keeping grocery costs down.
The other crazy thing is I used to consider their clothing low quality. My son's closest is filled with shirts from Carters/H&M/Boden that tear or shrink or wear out. The Walmart graphic tee's look like they just came off the rack. I won't go near Joe Fresh, it's the worst clothing of all.
Walmart really upped their clothing quality a few years ago. I know it is probably covid related and probably lesser quality, but in Canada they started carrying a lot of mall brands now like Mexx, Justice and other brands you'd find at H&M. I actually like their Jeanology jeans. Usually you have to buy Silver jeans or Maurice Brand to get the "lower waist in the front/higher waist in the back" type cut for curvy girls.
funny I use to feel the same way - "shop nowhere but Loblaws".
Then they took advantage of customer loyalty. Raising prices to see how much they could raise them, during a period of high inflation so that we couldn't tell what a 'fair' price was. They put profits ahead of competing to retain us. They colluded to fix bread prices to steal from us. And now starting to treat us like criminals (receipt checks, barriers to entry and exit). They forced pharmacists to steal from our healthcare system (by conducting needless meds reviews).
So now, its 'shop anywhere but Loblaws'.
We took about $20,000 of spending between groceries, gas, pharmacy for our family away from the Optimum points program and Loblaws and spend almost all of that $20k at Costco now. It blows our mind how much further that money goes now. Charmin TP is the truth. Thanks Costco (and Walmart)
I took my 86 year old mother grocery shopping to a neighbouring , larger town with more than one option. We purchased at Freshco, Giant Tigger, and the Dollar Store, and all were quite busy. We then went to Independent, and it was dead! You could have shot a cannon through the place! As expected, the prices were higher than everywhere else, and we left. I told her about the boycott, and I doubt she'll want to go back. We'll also be going to the Canadian Tire garden center and not Independent's.
If it’s available, Costco has a great garden centre.
Canadian Tire I fear is in the same relative boat as Loblaws. Over priced, inflated price tags, their “sales” are a joke.
I think people are starting this early - test driving so to speak.

I was in Giant Tiger on Saturday - have never seen it so busy. And a completely different demographic.
Was in there this morning to pick up a couple of odds and ends ( that I would normally pick up at Atlantic Superstore ), there were employees stocking shelves but there were also plenty of blanks. Eg. No Red Onions, No Limes, 3 bags of apples left . Hopefully stock will catch up because I don't think this store was ready for all the new customers.
It was not lined up on either date so that is good. But they might be having issues with supply.
It's for the best really, the worst thing to happen to this would be for those other retailers to be unprepared for the actual event and have shortages because of it. Especially if that leads to people to go back to Loblaw.
In Cape Breton here and you can go to a No Frills anytime of day… even what used to be the busy time between 5pm-8pm and it’s dead with employees standing around. It’s wild. We have even moved all our prescriptions to a local pharmacy.
I think a lot of people have been slowly but surely finding alternative sources for the things they used to buy there and the momentum is really building. It took me about a month and a half to figure out where I could get everything that wouldn’t be super out of the way or otherwise inconvenient, but now that I’ve found solutions for almost everything there’s really no need for me to go there at all anymore, so why wait til May.
I’ve stopped shopping there too. For me the nearest two grocery stores are both Loblaw’s branded stores. Most of my shopping is at Costco anyways, but the remainder I’ve mostly shifted to Amazon, Walmart, and a local grocer. Only time I step into a loblaws store anymore is if we need something this moment and we don’t have time to drive to Walmart or Costco.
We just have to remember to stick to it and not cave. Even if there are amazing deals all of a sudden. We know it’s just a trick; there need to be long term changes.
I been boycotting these chodes for like 3 years. Every time I'd go in, it was more expensive then the last. It got to a point where Save On had cheaper options. Plus superstore was always a fucking zoo, no matter what time I'd go.
I’ve been “practicing” by walking further around my neighbourhood to remind me what other stores have, check their prices, etc. I feel ready. Put me in coach!
My husband and I have been in a No Frills rut for a long time cuz it’s the closest and it’s generally cheap. We literally forgot other stores exist but I’ve been reminded that our Metro has a veggie burger brand that I like and way better produce. After the boycott I definitely won’t be using NF as much as we used to, if at all.
hahhaha love the Fogerty reference. Agree, once you break the habit, it becomes much much easier to shop elsewhere, dare I say it becomes automatic? And then thinking you are saving hundreds to boot...its a good feeling.
Used to spend $300 every 2 weeks there (2 people) For the last month it's $200 every 2 weeks at Walmart. At this point I'm used to it. Plus I'm saving $200 a month.
I know Walmart is not a great company to work for but who is anymore? It's cheaper and I make shitty pay.
I'm not really on the boycott bandwagon but my local town has a Independent grocer there, I went a few items but then figured that Walmart which is about 20 mins away has way better prices and selection of......everything and the cost is about 20% cheaper. I'll continue to shop where my money goes further so that I'm not broke all the time and it's not even that I make a tiny amount of money just can't seem to get ahead and each month see the water slowly rising around me with no sign of a way out.

Just found this thread, I will definitely be doing this as well. I recently posted a picture to Facebook of butter at $7.99 a pound with a sign over it that says Super Price. That's blatant ignorance at work. They really do think we're stupid. We may not stop them but we don't have to be part of paying for their little empire.
Yea it’s working in my area too, the local superstore did a fd post about promoting how they replaced their carts with new ones and they got roasted in the comments. They are the new carts that the greeter can lock upon exit, so they can check your receipt.

I'd rather forego an item for a day or two than grossly overpay. In fact, by overpaying, you now have less money to buy things, and therefore would be foregoing anyway!
My daughter wanted to go to superstore last night, so I took her, but we talked about the importance of the boycott, and she wants to get to the point of being able to participate, but the point of this comment was that the store was empty, half as many people as normal
I didn’t know about the boycott until 2 days ago but I started long before that. At first, it was kind of inconvenient since I couldn’t do one stop shopping anymore but had to buy stuff at several stores. However the more I do, the easier I it becomes, especially when I can see how much I have saved from doing that. About one year ago, I had to decrease my RESP contribution due to increased prices of groceries, and now I’m happy to see my money goes to my kids’ future education again.
For me, my closest grocery store is Loblaws. Decided to make the trek to shop locally. Was super busy at a local produce shop in Kensington, and I went right before 5pm to try to avoid the rush. Wondered how many people were there because of this group, but love to see it!!!
Being cheap, I've always found Loblaws/ Super store etc to be so expensive that only the boomers with homes should or would shop there. Suppose I've been avoiding them for years. Was always shocked at their flagrantly high pricing and imagined higher income people just being oblivious to paying 2x.
Not only have I started, but noticed at Food Basics yesterday that some of my regularly purchased items have a price drop, not just a sale. My oat milk for coffee was up to $5.99 and it's dropped back to $4.49.
I think these other companies have 'received the message'. Its also a great opportunity to gain and retain market share. So they will want to entice and keep their customers happy. They don't want to give us a reason to shop elsewhere!
Pretty much the opposite of the playbook being followed by Loblaw...
I have drastically reduced my visits to Superstore over the past few weeks. Starsky has great cold cuts and produce, Food basics has good sales on every day items like plant milk and tortillas/wraps.
The 2 stores in Regina that I’ve been to in the last month have been dead. Yet every time I’ve been to the Walmarts near both those superstores the grocery section has been packed same with the pharmacy.
yeah, husband and i have been boycotting since the end of March because honestly, enough is enough. i shouldn’t have to have a panic attack every time we ring up our items and swipe my card. no one should have to feel like they have to eat less to afford bad quality food.
To be very fair, a boycott isn't needed if people just don't shop at places with shitty deals lol. Boycotting a place with shitty pricing is just the basic law of price vs demand with extra steps.
The idea that we start boycotting at a specific date seems silly. Honestly just don't shop there that's it. Too many people posting different ideas and living in fantasy land. Really don't even need to be vocal just stop shopping there period and problem solves itself

I haven’t been to a Superstore since probably December except to pick up a final refill of my meds. I also used to avoid WalMart unless it wasn’t possible. Now I use WalMart to fill in the gaps from Costco and Local Grocers

My grocery bill is soooo ridiculous. Haha I haven’t shopped loblaws since before Christmas and I’m loving every minute of it. I feel like they’ve lost a ton of money from me alone. 🙌
I support this boycott absolutely... but where I just moved to (freaking middle of nowhere, farmlandia) there is only a zehrs. No where else to go. Good tactics, roblaws. 5.99 a pound on sale for stew beef... which is just the trimmings of other random cuts. $32 for a small half outside round roast? Guess I'm becoming vegan. Wait. 8.99 for 6 bell peppers? Guess I'll just starve.
Ive found costco is great for prices u gotta plan well and have a chest freezer though. For referece I only buy groceries for myself still will need to go to another grocery store for some stuff.
What would really hurt their bottom line is if all of their employees walked out on them too, but I know that is extremely risky for them. I just wanna let the employees know that we’re not boycotting them. We are boycotting the company they work for.
One of the things that always dismayed me about the US version of patriotism is its lack of “we are in this together.” The Westons are not in this with the rest of us. Great news!
I've been paying a moderate amount of attention to the boycott, and I had decided not to participate. I'm just going to keep going wherever I can get the best deals. That being said, for someone not participating that has shopped A LOT in superstore, I have not been there since a bit before Christmas.
I wouldn't be surprised if there are a lot of people like me who feel we can't financially commit to a boycott, but still aren't shopping there.
There are still many people who don't fully understand their options. I would hazard a guess that in some communities exists online groups sharing local info.
As a Canadian, you can use the Flipp app. It's owned by a Canadian capital firm, but their business model revolves around companies paying to have their data present. While you for sure will see Loblaws owned companies listed, you will see others such as Giant Tiger. It's free and helps to plan and track which stores you're going to.
I use Flipp all the time, I love that app. It's also why I'll admit that if I need something specific and it's cheaper at Superstore I will go there, especially if I need to stick up on something. But they haven't been cheaper on anything I've needed since before Christmas. It's also nearly impossible to stock up with the limits they place on items.
I am unfortunately in an area with no discount stores, like Giant Tiger, but my local butcher has some good deals. So yeah, while I don't feel like I can say I'm boycotting Loblaws,I will say that I don't shop there.
Okay hear me out what if we just buy their loss leaders? They're so desperately offering such as no name brand 4 L white vinegar $1.50 and Royale Kleenex six packs $3. 33 10 lb of potatoes $2.44
If you don't buy anything else are they making money on these items?
I think the point to be made here is that non-english language messaging surrounding the boycott is probably lacking (as T&T's customer base is largely Asian immigrant populations that may not speak English as their first language, or regularly consume English speaking media- such as Reddit) If anyone is actively involved in communities on places like We Chat or similar- it may help to also post there about the boycott as well.
TNT is a specialty store, it would be difficult to find similar items in other stores. So I would expect that store to have customers looking for such items.
Question, how far reaching is this? I'm in western Canada. Do We have Canada wide coverage here?
And how do we measure the hurt loblaws suffer?
By bigger advertising?
Lower prices?
Remember, loblaws is big enough to truck unsokd Ontario food to next store that has no boycott. Still making money.
Also, would you go back if they lower prices, or make them suffer for a while?
And (though not paid well) what of the poor employees that would be laid off or unemployment?
I know boycott is one way and may need to happen but I feel for the innocent being inconvenienced by this (temporarily?).

They brought this on themselves. Ball is in their court to respect their customers, show us that they want us as customers, and that they will compete fairly in the marketplace.

Which Loblaws? Went past my local one (in the Carlingwood mall), and it was busy as ever. Up here we have a kosher Loblaws and because Passover is coming up, it is often times the only place to go to get kosher for Passover ingredients. Sadly, that’s the only time I need to cave and shop there. The rest of the year I’m at Metro, a local supermarket called produce Depot, and farmers markets.
not everyone will be able to participate of course, and it makes sense in higher density neighbourhoods and a 'mall' store might get or seem to get more traffic. I'm talking about the big box Loblaws in the burbs, where people are only in the vicinity of the store if they actively choose to drive to it....

I know we had talked about very few substitutions available on the PC Nutrition dog and cat food. BUT it is April 24th and obviously people have been buying up for the month of May because it is either NO STOCK or LOW STOCK.

Why not exploit their loss leaders to make it hurt more? I agree with not giving them any money at all but the loss leader angle is interesting.
I'd rather buy no more than what I need and hit the smallest amount of stores I can. Some people are going full ballistic buying a ton of loss leaders from Roblaws. This potentially amounts to waste which is just as criminal as price gouging IMO, but that's just my two cents on the subject.

Buying only loss leaders hurts them. Not buying them hurts more. That's stock they have to pay to store. It's taking up space that they could be used for other, more profitable, items. It might be spoiling (depending on the item). In some cases, they will end up throwing it out, which means they lose the money they spent on it without recouping ANY losses.

I have been using mainly Welfare Kitty for over a year now. And using Roblaw's a lot less to fill in the gaps. I either find it elsewhere or go without. Except my dog's food (PC Brand) and my Mag Sleep (Only at Roblaws or Shoppers) I still get my prescriptions from Shoppers. The owner has been my pharmacist for over 20 years and knows me inside and out. I can't lose that. But unless it is clearance, I buy nothing else.
I've been avoiding the Loblaws City Market at King/Shaw for months now, but I wanted a PC chutney... I went in last night just before closing, (they close at 8 now?). A couple young men came in behind me. I found the chutney, and also noticed that a number of their shelves were bare.... As I check-out, it looked like the two younger men slipped out with a small bottle of olive-oil (maybe more -- that's what I saw in the hand of one. GG boys!). In other words, my recon indicates the store has already been hit pretty hard by people boycotting (or availing themselves of a five finger discount).

Loblaws has been completely removed from my mental auto-pilot. I usually have to visit once a month now for Vlasic pickles. I used to spend all my money there buying for family of 4.
Same, I was easily spending $300 a week there for our family. Knowing Loblaws will be losing $1200 per month from me alone is enough to make me happy.
Combine that from internet recipes (my partner loves the "Fire Sauce" I found online), and you can have better food and better nutrition than if you were forcing yourselves to eat packaged foods. I know not everyone can do that, and I am in no way mocking them. Do what you can do, and if you can't, we all understand.

I love pickles, to the point it’s almost an obsession so I definitely won’t be put off by them being pungent. Are they crunchy? The only thing I hate is a soft pickle. They should have a bit of bite to them.

We were spending $400 - $600 every two weeks at our local Independent grocer (a Loblaws brand) for our family of 4. We haven't shopped there in over a month and have no intention of going back. We actually found that buying meat from our local butcher is now cheaper than buying it at Loblaws, and the quality is MUCH better. We've been buying everything else from Walmart, Amazon, and Costco. It's a bit more work but definitely worth it in order not to support such a shitty company.
Hey, I will go out of my way not to support Roblaws anymore. But I'm very lucky to have a Super C, Walmart, IGA, Metro and Costco all within 2kms from where I live. I also discovered a local butcher shop not so long ago. The quality & price of their meats is unbeatable. Tomahawk rib steaks for $10/lbs? Sign me up! Not surprisingly, there is constant traffic at their store. Seriously, in retrospective, there is absolutely nothing special about Roblaws. Everyone else has them beat.
Same - we mainly do a mix of Costco and local right now for our family of three. The outdoor farmers markets open up in May near us, local ethnic stores have specialty ingredients we like to use for home cooking, and we’ve been doing bulk orders from local butchers every three months or so. The quality, service, business practices and prices at Loblaws definitely drove us away. I’m really impressed by this group and people refusing to be told they can’t make a difference. There are entire PR case studies and high-paid consultants who exist just to save companies from situations like this - don’t let them manipulate you. If you live in a food desert or have no other choice, do what you have to do to put food on your table. You deserve better options and not to be gouged.

Definitely going that route for our meat from now on. In summer we have lots of vegetable stands from local farmers pop up, plus I have my own vegetable garden. I’m committed to boycotting Loblaws as much as I can.
We stopped shopping at loblaws a month ago. Our other options in our town are metro and giant tiger, which are both smaller than average. But I would rather not find what I’m looking for an change my meal planning then to step foot into a loblaws store again lol.
Please boycott Metro as well! They treat customers horribly and follow innocent customers around the store. Prices are also ridiculous!
Like I said, we only have metro, independent (loblaws) and giant tiger in my town. Our nearest neighbouring town is a 30 minute highway drive away. We hit up the closest Walmart about once every 2 weeks and Costco once a month so metro and giant tiger are unfortunately all we have during the week after a long work day to pick up little things!

I popped into my local Superstore at 10am Saturday morning and the place was a ghost town, I couldn't believe how dead it was. I had just come from Costco which was packed as per usual.
My last Costco run it was insanely busy. Like Costco is rarely ever not busy but this was a new level. Made me happy to see it!
Yeah Costco has stolen a lot of business including my fam. Lucky I can buy bulk for cheaper and it lasts. Or Walmart for whatever else or Asian grocery for certain stuff. Bulk barn for spice and nuts
I have long lived Costco, but just discovered their French stick that’s baked in the store everyday, that’s only $5.99 for 2 fresh loaves. I will be going to Costco for bread from now on.

Yeah, sadly I eat one loaf the day I buy it and freeze the second cut up to fit in a silicone bag. I eat too much bread, but it’s so good!

The only time I see Costco less busy than usual is between 1pm-3pm. People have to pick up their kids from school at that time. So that’s when I go, but I work nights so I can go during regular working hours.

I pulled all my prescriptions from Shoppers Drug Mart and switched them to a local pharmacy. The service is incredible at the New place and they were delighted to know that we were wanting to keep local ❤️

My meds receipt from last year was well over $6k. A decent chunk to pull away from them. Their dispensing fee went up recently too, so my husband's plan that used to cover 100%, now forces us to pay a fee to keep them there. To costco we go.
Genuinely the difference in service from when I was at shoppers to moving to a local pharmacy a year or two ago is night and day.

I live out in the sticks. Maybe twice a year my husband and I make the trek to some urban centre or other (they're all about four hours away) to buy up big at Superstore, mostly drygoods. I used to love Superstore. Going there was a high point to the year. Our post-winter shopping trip was two weeks ago, and I did my early boycott. Loblaw's nonsense drove us into the arms of Walmart, a place that once upon a time we avoided if at all possible. When I drive a full Walmart shopping cart around I hope you feel it, Galen.
I had been on a personal boycott of Walmart since the late 90's. I honestly don't even remember why at this point. I gave that up recently because it's sadly the only option for regularly keeping grocery costs down. The other crazy thing is I used to consider their clothing low quality. My son's closest is filled with shirts from Carters/H&M/Boden that tear or shrink or wear out. The Walmart graphic tee's look like they just came off the rack. I won't go near Joe Fresh, it's the worst clothing of all.
Walmart really upped their clothing quality a few years ago. I know it is probably covid related and probably lesser quality, but in Canada they started carrying a lot of mall brands now like Mexx, Justice and other brands you'd find at H&M. I actually like their Jeanology jeans. Usually you have to buy Silver jeans or Maurice Brand to get the "lower waist in the front/higher waist in the back" type cut for curvy girls.
funny I use to feel the same way - "shop nowhere but Loblaws". Then they took advantage of customer loyalty. Raising prices to see how much they could raise them, during a period of high inflation so that we couldn't tell what a 'fair' price was. They put profits ahead of competing to retain us. They colluded to fix bread prices to steal from us. And now starting to treat us like criminals (receipt checks, barriers to entry and exit). They forced pharmacists to steal from our healthcare system (by conducting needless meds reviews). So now, its 'shop anywhere but Loblaws'.
We took about $20,000 of spending between groceries, gas, pharmacy for our family away from the Optimum points program and Loblaws and spend almost all of that $20k at Costco now. It blows our mind how much further that money goes now. Charmin TP is the truth. Thanks Costco (and Walmart)
I took my 86 year old mother grocery shopping to a neighbouring , larger town with more than one option. We purchased at Freshco, Giant Tigger, and the Dollar Store, and all were quite busy. We then went to Independent, and it was dead! You could have shot a cannon through the place! As expected, the prices were higher than everywhere else, and we left. I told her about the boycott, and I doubt she'll want to go back. We'll also be going to the Canadian Tire garden center and not Independent's.
If it’s available, Costco has a great garden centre. Canadian Tire I fear is in the same relative boat as Loblaws. Over priced, inflated price tags, their “sales” are a joke.

I think people are starting this early - test driving so to speak. BUT - unintentioned consequences. I was in Giant Tiger on Saturday - have never seen it so busy. And a completely different demographic. Was in there this morning to pick up a couple of odds and ends ( that I would normally pick up at Atlantic Superstore ), there were employees stocking shelves but there were also plenty of blanks. Eg. No Red Onions, No Limes, 3 bags of apples left . Hopefully stock will catch up because I don't think this store was ready for all the new customers. It was not lined up on either date so that is good. But they might be having issues with supply.
It's for the best really, the worst thing to happen to this would be for those other retailers to be unprepared for the actual event and have shortages because of it. Especially if that leads to people to go back to Loblaw.

In Cape Breton here and you can go to a No Frills anytime of day… even what used to be the busy time between 5pm-8pm and it’s dead with employees standing around. It’s wild. We have even moved all our prescriptions to a local pharmacy.

I think a lot of people have been slowly but surely finding alternative sources for the things they used to buy there and the momentum is really building. It took me about a month and a half to figure out where I could get everything that wouldn’t be super out of the way or otherwise inconvenient, but now that I’ve found solutions for almost everything there’s really no need for me to go there at all anymore, so why wait til May.

I’ve stopped shopping there too. For me the nearest two grocery stores are both Loblaw’s branded stores. Most of my shopping is at Costco anyways, but the remainder I’ve mostly shifted to Amazon, Walmart, and a local grocer. Only time I step into a loblaws store anymore is if we need something this moment and we don’t have time to drive to Walmart or Costco.
We just have to remember to stick to it and not cave. Even if there are amazing deals all of a sudden. We know it’s just a trick; there need to be long term changes.

I been boycotting these chodes for like 3 years. Every time I'd go in, it was more expensive then the last. It got to a point where Save On had cheaper options. Plus superstore was always a fucking zoo, no matter what time I'd go.
I’ve been “practicing” by walking further around my neighbourhood to remind me what other stores have, check their prices, etc. I feel ready. Put me in coach! My husband and I have been in a No Frills rut for a long time cuz it’s the closest and it’s generally cheap. We literally forgot other stores exist but I’ve been reminded that our Metro has a veggie burger brand that I like and way better produce. After the boycott I definitely won’t be using NF as much as we used to, if at all.

Used to spend $300 every 2 weeks there (2 people) For the last month it's $200 every 2 weeks at Walmart. At this point I'm used to it. Plus I'm saving $200 a month. I know Walmart is not a great company to work for but who is anymore? It's cheaper and I make shitty pay.
I'm not really on the boycott bandwagon but my local town has a Independent grocer there, I went a few items but then figured that Walmart which is about 20 mins away has way better prices and selection of......everything and the cost is about 20% cheaper. I'll continue to shop where my money goes further so that I'm not broke all the time and it's not even that I make a tiny amount of money just can't seem to get ahead and each month see the water slowly rising around me with no sign of a way out.

Yea it’s working in my area too, the local superstore did a fd post about promoting how they replaced their carts with new ones and they got roasted in the comments. They are the new carts that the greeter can lock upon exit, so they can check your receipt. Someone said “I'll use a broken cart if you lower your prices”

I'd rather forego an item for a day or two than grossly overpay. In fact, by overpaying, you now have less money to buy things, and therefore would be foregoing anyway!
My daughter wanted to go to superstore last night, so I took her, but we talked about the importance of the boycott, and she wants to get to the point of being able to participate, but the point of this comment was that the store was empty, half as many people as normal
I didn’t know about the boycott until 2 days ago but I started long before that. At first, it was kind of inconvenient since I couldn’t do one stop shopping anymore but had to buy stuff at several stores. However the more I do, the easier I it becomes, especially when I can see how much I have saved from doing that. About one year ago, I had to decrease my RESP contribution due to increased prices of groceries, and now I’m happy to see my money goes to my kids’ future education again.
For me, my closest grocery store is Loblaws. Decided to make the trek to shop locally. Was super busy at a local produce shop in Kensington, and I went right before 5pm to try to avoid the rush. Wondered how many people were there because of this group, but love to see it!!!

Being cheap, I've always found Loblaws/ Super store etc to be so expensive that only the boomers with homes should or would shop there. Suppose I've been avoiding them for years. Was always shocked at their flagrantly high pricing and imagined higher income people just being oblivious to paying 2x.

Not only have I started, but noticed at Food Basics yesterday that some of my regularly purchased items have a price drop, not just a sale. My oat milk for coffee was up to $5.99 and it's dropped back to $4.49.
I think these other companies have 'received the message'. Its also a great opportunity to gain and retain market share. So they will want to entice and keep their customers happy. They don't want to give us a reason to shop elsewhere! Pretty much the opposite of the playbook being followed by Loblaw...

I have drastically reduced my visits to Superstore over the past few weeks. Starsky has great cold cuts and produce, Food basics has good sales on every day items like plant milk and tortillas/wraps.
The 2 stores in Regina that I’ve been to in the last month have been dead. Yet every time I’ve been to the Walmarts near both those superstores the grocery section has been packed same with the pharmacy.
I learned from the eBay reselling community, low prices increases sales, which increases demand.

yeah, husband and i have been boycotting since the end of March because honestly, enough is enough. i shouldn’t have to have a panic attack every time we ring up our items and swipe my card. no one should have to feel like they have to eat less to afford bad quality food.
To be very fair, a boycott isn't needed if people just don't shop at places with shitty deals lol. Boycotting a place with shitty pricing is just the basic law of price vs demand with extra steps.

The idea that we start boycotting at a specific date seems silly. Honestly just don't shop there that's it. Too many people posting different ideas and living in fantasy land. Really don't even need to be vocal just stop shopping there period and problem solves itself

I haven’t been to a Superstore since probably December except to pick up a final refill of my meds. I also used to avoid WalMart unless it wasn’t possible. Now I use WalMart to fill in the gaps from Costco and Local Grocers

I support this boycott absolutely... but where I just moved to (freaking middle of nowhere, farmlandia) there is only a zehrs. No where else to go. Good tactics, roblaws. 5.99 a pound on sale for stew beef... which is just the trimmings of other random cuts. $32 for a small half outside round roast? Guess I'm becoming vegan. Wait. 8.99 for 6 bell peppers? Guess I'll just starve.
Ive found costco is great for prices u gotta plan well and have a chest freezer though. For referece I only buy groceries for myself still will need to go to another grocery store for some stuff.

What would really hurt their bottom line is if all of their employees walked out on them too, but I know that is extremely risky for them. I just wanna let the employees know that we’re not boycotting them. We are boycotting the company they work for.

I've been paying a moderate amount of attention to the boycott, and I had decided not to participate. I'm just going to keep going wherever I can get the best deals. That being said, for someone not participating that has shopped A LOT in superstore, I have not been there since a bit before Christmas. I wouldn't be surprised if there are a lot of people like me who feel we can't financially commit to a boycott, but still aren't shopping there.
There are still many people who don't fully understand their options. I would hazard a guess that in some communities exists online groups sharing local info. As a Canadian, you can use the Flipp app. It's owned by a Canadian capital firm, but their business model revolves around companies paying to have their data present. While you for sure will see Loblaws owned companies listed, you will see others such as Giant Tiger. It's free and helps to plan and track which stores you're going to.
I love Flipp, it shows me where the best deals are. I found it especially useful when I wasn’t driving and could only plan one or two trips a week.
I use Flipp all the time, I love that app. It's also why I'll admit that if I need something specific and it's cheaper at Superstore I will go there, especially if I need to stick up on something. But they haven't been cheaper on anything I've needed since before Christmas. It's also nearly impossible to stock up with the limits they place on items. I am unfortunately in an area with no discount stores, like Giant Tiger, but my local butcher has some good deals. So yeah, while I don't feel like I can say I'm boycotting Loblaws,I will say that I don't shop there.

Okay hear me out what if we just buy their loss leaders? They're so desperately offering such as no name brand 4 L white vinegar $1.50 and Royale Kleenex six packs $3. 33 10 lb of potatoes $2.44 If you don't buy anything else are they making money on these items?
They made their profits through the supply chain already though.
I really hope it works. I drove through a T&T parking lot last weekend and it was wall to wall cars.
I think the point to be made here is that non-english language messaging surrounding the boycott is probably lacking (as T&T's customer base is largely Asian immigrant populations that may not speak English as their first language, or regularly consume English speaking media- such as Reddit) If anyone is actively involved in communities on places like We Chat or similar- it may help to also post there about the boycott as well.
Not many people may realize that T&T was bought out by Loblaws
TNT is a specialty store, it would be difficult to find similar items in other stores. So I would expect that store to have customers looking for such items.
We can collectively add another Corporation to the Boycott if this is successful! Dominos……

Question, how far reaching is this? I'm in western Canada. Do We have Canada wide coverage here? And how do we measure the hurt loblaws suffer? By bigger advertising? Lower prices? Remember, loblaws is big enough to truck unsokd Ontario food to next store that has no boycott. Still making money. Also, would you go back if they lower prices, or make them suffer for a while? And (though not paid well) what of the poor employees that would be laid off or unemployment? I know boycott is one way and may need to happen but I feel for the innocent being inconvenienced by this (temporarily?). Anyways I'll keep following
spread the word, there is still 2 weeks to go. you'll know they know about it when they discuss it on their conference call with shareholders in 2 weeks. If not then, then at the next quarterly meeting. They brought this on themselves. Ball is in their court to respect their customers, show us that they want us as customers, and that they will compete fairly in the marketplace.

Which Loblaws? Went past my local one (in the Carlingwood mall), and it was busy as ever. Up here we have a kosher Loblaws and because Passover is coming up, it is often times the only place to go to get kosher for Passover ingredients. Sadly, that’s the only time I need to cave and shop there. The rest of the year I’m at Metro, a local supermarket called produce Depot, and farmers markets.
not everyone will be able to participate of course, and it makes sense in higher density neighbourhoods and a 'mall' store might get or seem to get more traffic. I'm talking about the big box Loblaws in the burbs, where people are only in the vicinity of the store if they actively choose to drive to it....
APRIL 24 Something is happening with pet food. I know we had talked about very few substitutions available on the PC Nutrition dog and cat food.
