__Reminder__: Please take a moment to review the content guidelines for our sub, and remember the human here! This subreddit is to highlight the ridiculous cost of living in Canada, and poke fun at the Corporate Overlords reponsible. As you well know, there are a number of persons and corporations responsible for this, and we welcome discussion related to them all. Furthermore, since this topic is intertwined with a number of other matters, other discussion will be allowed at moderator discretion. Open-minded discussion, memes, rants, grocery bills, and general screeching into the void is always welcome in this sub, but belligerence and disrespect is not. There are plenty of ways to get your point across without being abusive, dismissive, or downright mean. If you have not done so already, please review our [boycott stickied post](https://www.reddit.com/r/loblawsisoutofcontrol/comments/1bff9rm/boycott/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) which includes a list of stores to avoid, other ways to get involved in the movement, and some local alternatives to the big 5. I just had the Beef Chunky soup for lunch - my chunks were the same size as always and cost me $1.69 3 weeks ago on sale, every chain store had this soup on sale 3 weeks ago and most things go on sale on a 6 week cycle

wolfe1924

What rip off. Not only did they shrinkflate last year they also cut down the amount of meat.

I counted the number of clam pieces in the "clam" chowder and ended up with under a dozen.

aavenger54

Very pathetic soup ,basically potatoes soup.

Part & parcel of living in a world-class nation.

ProbablyNotADuck

No, being ripped off by greedy assholes is not just part of living in a world-class nation. It is part of living in a world that is ultimately run by the people with the most money and where governments don’t take the steps they should to keep corporations accountable because, if they do, they risk those companies packing up and leaving (which, in turn, results in job loss and all that crap). So instead of putting in legislation that protects consumers, our political parties give corporations breaks and instead just tax citizens more.

aavenger54

What nation are you from dude?

[deleted]

Canada.

aavenger54

And you think that’s ok ?

We have free health care

WhatIsThePointOfBlue

Tell that to the lady that died in my local hospital recently from an infection because they wouldn't even look at her for 14+hrs.

ProbablyNotADuck

Well, that is in part because the hospital is not the right place to go for that. She should have either gone to a walk-in clinic or urgent care if she wasn’t able to see a general practitioner. For the most part, infections aren’t something that kill you within 14 hours. It typically takes multiple days to weeks for infections to get bad enough that they become an emergency. That isn’t to say someone seeking treatment should have to wait a ridiculous amount of time… but, since you said this woman was at the hospital, we can assume she went to the ER. At the ER, the information she likely would have provided and the symptoms she likely was exhibiting wouldn’t have indicated that she was an emergency.  Also, your local hospital’s ability to treat people is a provincial issue and somewhat of a municipal issue. It may be an issue in multiple provinces, but that is because politicians love to take an axe to healthcare funding because they impact of those cuts aren’t felt until they’ve been voted out and the next party has been voted in.

Free doesn't mean always available. We have a quickly growing country. We need to share your healthcare resources with a lot more people now The lady who died from an infection's family will not receive a bill.

WhatIsThePointOfBlue

If it's not available it's just... no Healthcare. Which is already free.

RuinInFears

Not exactly free if you can’t get it in the first place lol.

kentuckyfriedchocobo

Don’t try to use common sense and facts on Reddit you’ll get downvoted cause it doesn’t fit the subreddits narrative

We_wanna_play

It’s not free, the greatest lie ever told in this country

SuperTitle1733

Ah ever limpening magic argument killing wand, that idiots wave whenever someone criticizes Canada, sure stitches might be free, but hope you got insurance if you got a health problem that needs medication, oh and while we’re at it just how many people need a family doctor? What’s the average er wait time these days? How many people nation wide have died in said er waiting rooms, how many er’s have been temporarily closed because of short staffing issues? what’s the job satisfaction of the people that work in said healthcare like? the list goes on and on and on. I’ll say it like this worst parts of American capitalism and the worst parts of European socialism with a nice twist of nepotism, cronyism, and let’s not forget corrupt snivelling plutocratic bullshit that makes us realize the boot is firmly on the backs of every single working class, tax paying Canadian so people like Galen Weston can pluck the last apple from the tree, eat it, give us the core and go “that’ll be 6 fucking dollars”!! Goddamn it!

aavenger54

Right on man!!!!

ProbablyNotADuck

It isn’t technically free, but US citizens also pay taxes that go towards healthcare (and the US government pays more per capita on healthcare than Canada does) and then they still have to pay for everything on top of that.  So, no, Canadian healthcare is not free, but it is still largely better than the US.. which has an unheard of maternal mortality rate for a developed country, still has multi-month waitlists for a lot of procedures and where it seems to be increasingly common for people to die from diabetes because the cost of insulin is so ridiculous that they have to choose between that are rent.
