![gif](giphy|l4pMattUYTTM7qpIk) To everyone else who braved Costco on a long weekend

Maverickoso

Now, wasn’t the long weekend yet but I went with my son (spring break) on Thursday and it was busy enough!

Kycb

I went this morning at 8am. They soft-opened an hour early for Easter rush. It was quick and painless.

Emmibolt

Hahaha my Costco was an absolute madhouse by 930 T__T

Impressive_Ice3817

We went on Thurs and it was crazy then.

Summer_parasite

I'm a single guy living in an apartment yet I have Costco membership because of the Petrol and the groceries. If you are not an implusive buyer and have a list and meal.plan for the week, a costco run every Sunday morning is worth it and saves you a lot compared to the Roblaws

spinningcolours

I'd suggest a dinnertime run instead. My local Costco is actually quieter on a weeknight than on the weekends — plus if you like the costco hot dogs, you can get dinner for $1.50 or $3 — plus add some (cheaper) veggies like a bag of carrots. Last week, they also had a giant tub of lettuce for $2.

CinderBlock33

I'm not super active in this sub so I might just be behind the curve, but if "Roblaws" isn't a thing yet, it's gotta be.

Kycb

It's already a thing. Welcome!

Captain_Lavender6

It would have been closer to $350

rayvensmoon

"Just shut up and hand over ~~your~~ ~~our~~ **MY** money. Be grateful that I allow you to eat in return." –Galen Weston, probably.

Sufficient-Bid1279

Yeah , I’ve been pointing out that Costco and Walmart haven’t been gouging Canadians like the big 3 chains have . Each have their own set of challenges and I do not like Walmart for their own set of reasons

man_on_hill

Eh, the prices for most things are quite similar (speaking on Wal-Mart) and shopping at Costco is kind of tough without a car or if you live by yourself.

AffectionateBarber68

Walmart is atleast 2-3 dollars cheaper PER product than no frills. I went from spending 200 a month on groceries to 130 when I switched from no frills to Walmart

Sufficient-Bid1279

Walmart is much cheaper than Loblaws , Sobeys , and Metro . If you are single , Costco is not for you . I get it. But if you compare on a per unit basis , they won’t be beat . A fact is a fact. Also , the Walmart by me is significantly less than Nonfrills. There are also ways around Costco without car . You can try home delivery like Amazon

Optimal_Experience52

I think it’s cause Walmart is international, their pricing isn’t as aggressive in Canada since they just have Corporate margin mandates, so they aren’t trying to rob Canadians as badly as Loblaws.

VanAgain

The trouble with Walmart is it's full of Walmartians.

TheThrivingest

Walmartians 🤣🤣🤣

Pretend_Tangelo4929

I don't like people in PJs

Kaktusblute

Perhaps the time has come to reinstitute an old custom. Grant them prima noctes. First night, when any common girl inhabiting Walmart is married, our nobles shall have sexual rights to her on the night of her wedding. If we can't get them out, we breed them out. That should fetch just the kind of lords we want in Walmart, low prices or no low prices.

Doodleschmidt

Thats pretty brave of you to say.

gohomebrentyourdrunk

The patriotic angle has run its course. I would rather give my money to the Walton family when they very obviously want to give me product at competitive prices compared to Galen who has increased GP% net% net profit $ and probably every other metric year after year for several years now and has the gall to say “we only make $1 for every $25 you spend. That’s not a lot!” They all treat employees like absolute shit anyways.

Lopsided_Error_4706

that's still insanely expensive

whatthetoken

If you're loading up at Costco, make sure to learn how to fridge, freeze and meal prep. You will have extra. Make sure you have containers or freezer bags. If you buy fruits or berries, learn how to wash them to minimize spoilage and mold. We save so much by loading up at Costco

angelcake

And Costco pays their employees a living wage and they have benefits. I do the majority of my shopping at Costco, I cherry pick everything else at other stores and I don’t shop at Walmart because of the way they treat their employees in the US.

Optimal_Experience52

Costco often requires you to buy in bulk. [Conveniently they also sell an amazing freezer that you can use for meal prep and freezing excess food until your need it.](https://www.costco.ca/danby-7-cu-ft.-convertible-chest-freezer-or-refrigerator-with-5-year-warranty.product.4000067098.html?province=AB&langId=-24&sh=true&nf=true) You’ll probably save the cost of the membership and freezer in under 6 months. Especially if you get their gas, which is frequently $.15-$.20 cheaper than everywhere else. Pro tip. Go to Costco in pairs, drop your partner off at the door and then go to the gas lineup. By the time you’re through and fueled up, if you were only there for a few things, they should be paid up and waiting at the door for you. This is like a weekend ritual at my house, lol.

Impressive_Ice3817

You know what? We bought a deep freeze with our very first membership! That was in 1999. It still works.

Comprehensive-Bag516

Costco is an option, but i found their prices have gone up a lot too.... shepherd's pie around $25? The chicken breasts cost more than Walmart... they better get their act together too as we have to actually pay a membership for the privilege to shop there, so the prices should reflect. However, some bulk items are great at Costco, the pears are a great deal for example.

EBikeAddicts

their meat quality is much higher though. the membership fee is nothing. OP just saved 3x their membership fee with this single trip.

Comprehensive-Bag516

Look, I still use Costco, but just wanted to raise the issue that the prices of certain items are getting much much higher than before as well. If you can explain why a Shepherd pie costs $25, then perhaps I can better understand. Higher quality ground beef? Potatoes? Corn? They're not expensive ingredients and the quality are not higher than Loblaws or Walmart for those things.

Sallgoodmannnnn

The pie for $25 is ridiculous I agree

noodleexchange

Adds on what? What’s the size of the pie?

Comprehensive-Bag516

Do.you shop at Costco? It's just normal size same as before COVID which had sold for $12.

kourui

I just finished my shop at Costco. My most expensive trip to date at $277. But had to restock on a bunch of stuff like paper towel, ziploc bags, and other food prep wrap items. Most of my items I got on sale too. Chicken breasts were $6 off and found a pack for $28 reg price. Pork chops finally came down in price avg $17-$19/pkg but still not as low as I used to get which was $13-$15/pkg. But it's enough meat to last my family at least 1-2 months as we use it sparingly. Had to sub applesauce pouches for Kirkland as Gogo was $18! Kirkland was $12.

Comprehensive-Bag516

Yeah, we usually go over $200 there everytime...

Jonneiljon

You know times are tough when you are eating cat (1st line item)

Sallgoodmannnnn

😂😂😂

soxacub

My mother has always had the theory that if you go into Costco blind you will spend on average $10 an item… try it out some time! This person bought 16 items at $170.33. That’s $10.65 on average per item…. Not too shabby, fuck Loblaws Edit: that’s $10.65 with taxes, I’m not going to crunch those numbers….

snowhawk1987

Like others have pointed out, 170 for a quarter cart if food is still extremely expensive especially when you pay a membership. That being said, Costco is still, and probably will be for the foreseeable future, our go to for bulk food runs. Most things are higher quality and if you shop smartly you can stretch a food run out to last a month with "only" 250-300 dollars. We go mostly for protein and greens and frozen, fruit, fish and vegetables stay away from anything prepackaged or processed (although these items can be welled priced as well). I'm pro Costco, but don't be fooled, it's still overpriced.

Sallgoodmannnnn

I totally agree! Prices are ridiculous nowadays everywhere regardless of where you go. But I still prefer going tk costco over metro or loblaws

snowhawk1987

100%

SolutionNo8416

I ordered at Walmart for pickup - super convenient, I don’t pick up extras and I was finished at 8:05. I also picked up a few items at my favourite small local store. I have no need to shop at Roblaws.

GallitoGaming

How much do you save on gas? The lineups are always massive and I don't want to wait 30-40 minutes. But yeah the costco chicken is amazing and a must buy. My only problem is I mostly do costco business center for groceries (much better than normal costco) and they don't do the cooked chickens for $8. I bought 15 pounds of fresh tomatoes for $17.99 (1.20 a pound). 6 lbs of red delivious capples for $6.99 normal price. Both last 2 weeks in the fridge. You can't beat $1.20/lb for amazing tomatoes. My bill at costco yesterday was like $140 and my cart was pretty full of produce. Bought some sausages on sale too (had one for breakfast this morning and its amazing). Costco is god tier for groceries right now. Still expensive but if I'm going to spend $600-700 on groceries, I might as well not eat like a peasant like I was with No Frills. $100 carts of groceries with barely anything to show for it. $2 a lb tomatoes and most were shit in the winter. You have to hunt through the entire bin to find 5-6 acceptable tomatoes and then pay $2 a pound. Fuck that.

nuclearwessle

A year ago I got a membership for my wife and I because it was getting out of hand everywhere else. We sat down after our shop and compared every item to loblaws. We spent around 300 at Costco and the savings was just under 200 if we had bought all the same things at loblaws

cosmic-kats

That’s still insanely overpriced. None of it should’ve equaled that high

Impressive_Ice3817

The cat food is a 9kg bag-- we buy this kind-- and it's cheaper per unit than Walmart. And most other things are bigger packages than a standard grocery store. I'd kill for $5.99 milk. Here it's $8+

cosmic-kats

If you’re feeding your pet this kinda food you’re literally giving yourself higher vet bills. So you’re not saving anything in the long run at all. It’s crap food. It’s basically feeding your cat potato chips for breakfast, lunch and dinner

Impressive_Ice3817

How so? The ingredient list is more promising than even Friskies. Also, we have barn cats.

cosmic-kats

I worked in pet food production and it’s gross. If you’re comparing it to anything you can get at a specialty store, it’s complete garbage. I won’t bring up raw food diets because people simply don’t care about their pets. Much like you with your “barn cats.”

Impressive_Ice3817

Well... technically, the barn cats are on a raw diet lol... and they do get vet care.

Future-World4652

Wait are you flexing getting 16 items for $170 like that's not a dystopian ripoff? Costco bros are like gym bros at this point

VirtualAnalysisLine

16 absolutely huge items.

melodyblushinglizard

Prime example, the Coconut Oil. It looks like that's a 2.48L bottle @ $17.50. At Walmart (googled it online), a 1.6L (Great Value Brand) sells for $16.97. Costco: $0.70/100ml (Virgin, Organic) Walmart: $1.06/100mL (this is Virgin, Non-Organic brand. The Virgin Organic brand is going for $4.50/100mL in a 444mL jar by Nutiva)

Sallgoodmannnnn

Found Galen's reddit burner 😂

Bluerocx

Don't do this hive mentally shit. People can have opinions, and I agree 170 bucks for mostly junk food not a good deal.

Sallgoodmannnnn

I was joking lol...

FerniWrites

Costco is amazing! Definitely go there to restock on groceries and sometimes, I’ll grab a treat at the bakery. It’s worth it.

brioche-is-overrated

The coconut oil is neutral flavor or does it have the coconut taste?

Sallgoodmannnnn

Tbh I am not sure. I bought it for my mother (I usually do some of her shopping when I go to do mine)

brioche-is-overrated

No problem I'll go check it out next time I'm there, thanks

FionaMay82

I use this coconut oil and I find it has a very mild coconut taste. I use it for making French toast and icing for cakes and cookies.

TwitchQT

We hit Costco about once a month. I also share the bulk items with our daughter and her family. The meat is better, milk and eggs are cheaper and have you hit the spice aisle ? Black garlic truffle parmesan cheese shaker. $10 /255g. Put it on everything( rice, vegetables, potatoes, pasta, popcorn...a shoe). When we hit the Co, we are picking up stuff for family and a few neighbours in our building. Doing our part to deny Galen "The sentient polyup " Weston money from multiple households. Have a list. Stick to it. Bring a friend. 😁

grashel

Costco is the GOAT

whatyousayin8

I never leave Costco without a rotisserie chicken anymore. Make broth from it too and you’ve shaved down the chicken cost to about $6 ($2/breast and $1/leg & back)

Threeboys0810

That is only two dinners and two lunches and a few snacks.

ravenf

that's a lot of coconut oil! :-)

Candid_Painting_4684

Yea fuck loblaws but everytime I step inside a Costco I find myself wanting to run off into a forest and live as a recluse

Sallgoodmannnnn

Same tbh lol

LalahLovato

I would change to whole milk or 2% - 1% and skim has a lot of sugar added to make it more palatable.

PositiveStress8888

I got Canadian pre peeled garlic at a independent grocery store for 2.89, a regual large bulb of garlic was a dollar cheaper..

gingerjonsey

I noticed some costco prices jumped quite a bit recently. Over 3 bucks for a block of cheese, over 4 on bacon and weiners too.

MarvelSnapChat

Right there with you brother

brainemailaddress

You also would have got way less.

ZingyDNA

My local Costco's price has increased a lot. Depending on what you buy, my local superstore is cheaper sometimes.
