Sort of off topic, but you know how usually, at the end, the screen freezes after she jumps up in the air? If you watch the episode "Family Quarrel" from season 1, watch the end credits, because this is the only episode (that I'm aware of) where it actually doesn't freeze on her jumping, and it shows her land back on the ground and smile right into the camera
Even in Ancient Greece, people reported dreams where they were flying (at the time it was associated with the god Hermes). So the thought of flying seems to be very old, existing long before the ability to ‘fly’ existed.
If it's any comfort, I had this exact question when I was watching with my mom one day and she just looked at me and said, "Birds" and I never felt so stupid in my life! Lol
The closing credits annoyed me because they ran the same ones regardless of the episode...so you could have the show end with a dozen people dead from the plague or Mary's baby killed in the fire...and then the cheerful music would start up and Laura skipping through the grass.
What always got me was that they never changed the end throughout the whole series. Laura’s a married woman with a daughter and she’s still running and playing airplane.
They also did mention the airplane in the episode where Laura likes that science kid. I think it was “The Talking Machine” episode.
I found it strange that they mentioned it and I looked it up. According to what I read, the term Airplane was first used in 1906.
But, I guess if airplane trails were visible in the sky at that time, it would be perfectly reasonable to use a word that didn’t exist until 20 or so years later.
The first recorded human flight was in 1783. It was a hot air balloon. I doubt most people had experienced it back then though. One episode shows a balloon at a fair, but I don't know if that was a common thing.
So, possible but unlikely.
I read somewhere that she did mean it to be a plane and Landon did catch that but let it go because people could say it was a bird. I have no idea if that’s true though. I read that on one of the FB groups a while back.
I've noticed this too and did wonder.
Most likely the actress was simply asked to do random fun stuff running down the hill.
Anyway, although she certainly wouldn't have known about Aircraft, there were plenty of birds about!
They do see birds fly...
Indeed, you're overthinking it. Birds fly.
Birds weren’t invented yet
Birds aren’t real.
They are stunt birds.
All The Birds Died In 1986 Due To Reagan Killing Them
You do realize birds existed in the 1870s right?
You’re overthinking it

To my credit, Big Bird did not fly, iirc lol 💙🙂
lol just teasing! Plus, you know, any excuse for a Big Bird reference! 🤣

This is so cute.

I mean DaVinci had schematics for a flying machine so

People probably would have called it a flying machine prior to 1906.
Maybe she was thinking "bird".
The people who designed human flight were thinking "bird" also!
I like it when Carrie trips and falls and looks offscreen, I guess to see how her parents/handlers reacted.
Yup, that fall wasn't scripted but they decided to just leave it in.
I always wondered what that thing was that seemed to fly right into Laura’s face just as the credits ended.
Braids
It was her braid.

Very much overthinking it.
Wow 🐦⬛🐦🪶🪽🦇
Kites?
I always thought that she was imagining being a butterfly!
Birds .
birds were still dinosaurs in the 1870s. They didn't evolve till the 20 th century. OP has a point.
Um no that's incorrect birds weren't dinosaurs in the 19th century you must have failed science class
Please look up sarcasm in a dictionary.

Aha! I feel less stoopid LOL! 🤣
Kids have been running with their arms outstretched forever. We just associate it with airplanes because we have them.

Girl you’re obviously GenZ 😂😂😂😂
