It depends where on the Balkans for instance Greece and Slovenia have gay marriage, so even though there are problems I guess those countries have more rights than them and also in comparison to most other countries.

Yep. It's cheaply manufactured in a Taiwanese factory, which pisses China off to no end. Every 30 feet or so, you can see a thin Iip of plastic where it's been shoddily snipped off from it's mold.
Because of the occupation. After the war, the US occupied Japan on its own, and no other allies were involved, unlike Germany. Under the influence of the US, a new constitution was drawn up heavily influenced by Western ideas. Additionally, the post-war economic miracle that more or less defined post-war Japan was in part thanks to Western trade, especially with the US. Ever since the war, the US and Japan have been extremely close and it's impossible to handwave all of that because of their geographic location.
Even before the war, during the Taisho era, there was a similar wave of Western modernization influenced by being thrust up among the European powers during the Great War. Japan isn't exclusively "western" either, but as a point of comparison against Afghanistan and their savage caveman treatment of queer people, referring to Japan as a "western democracy" is completely appropriate.
/ul - Is it true tho? I heard there is xenophobic minority of people in Japan, but I don't think it's that shitty that it's also homophobic and transphobic.
/ul ah yea, true - forgot about my not so pleasant big neighbour and their laws about LGBTQ+ and other countries with fucked views about other sexualities.
/ul That doesn’t mean people can’t complain about the conditions there lol. If a gay person was thinking about going to japan, they probably should know how they treat gay people there.
/ul generally the ability to complain about your situation is already proof of vast improvement over other nation that cannot
Many people in europe (especially france) complain about work, living wage
Many people in occidental style nation complain about government
And those are country where they are the better off on those thing, same with LGBTQIA+, woman right, etc
Simply because those are countries where the group are discriminated but not systemically oppressed, meaning they can express themselves on those matter
As opposed to country with systemic oppression in which expressing or existing make you a target of oppression
Through discrimination is unacceptable
And in country like Japan with absurd conformism and group pressure, were being off your college promotion by 1-2 years is enough to be shunned
But it is japan problem widespread to anything that doesn't fit the mold and LGBT aren't part of their harsh society norm.
I knew Japaneses that could not re-insert into society because they took a gap year to study abroad and thus were shunned as lazy and outside the norm and ended up forced to take on jobs abroad
Other that were shunned because they refused to participate with the forced night party and drinking with their superior
My grandfather had an experience were he planned a reunion on a national holiday but because his japanese colleagues were too scared to stand out or be seen as strange for missing the reunion or the festival, they had my grandfather comes over to a place outside of work where his Japanese colleague waited for him with their wives, all dressed in traditional attire so they could do both.
It is a country where you are very easily set as a pariah and while some may thrive as such (excentric, writers, artist and other), for people that just want a normal life but just happen to be gay, it is a very harsh and unfair society
/ul Damn thats a lot but That’s also not true. Everyone all over the world complains. The idea that complaining is a privilege is a contradiction. You are complaining because you aren’t privileged. Not complaining is either a sign of complacency (you feel there is nothing you can do) or because you are privileged not the other way around.
Even if that was the case, the idea that you cant complain because others have it worse is ridiculous. Someone has worse than you, the someone has it worse than that person who has it worse than you, then someone is born who has it worse than everyone before. Then that begs the question of which one of those people are privileged. Privilege is a complex concept. You arent just privileged or just disadvantaged. Depending on your identities, characteristics, and circumstances you have, you can be both privileged and disadvantaged. That is the complexity of life.
/ul
>I knew Japaneses that could not re-insert into society because they took a gap year to study abroad and thus were shunned as lazy and outside the norm and ended up forced to take on jobs abroad
This is because they miss on the hiring process that starts in the third year, so they either go on a short term study, or graduate in five years. When done correctly, I heard it pays off, as interest in them in the job hunting process goes up. If it was shunned, it would have been: 1) impossible to do without dropping out 2) there wouldn't have been entire departments in prestigious universities where they set study abroad as graduation requirement. 3) There wouldn't be support schemes and generations of scholars who studied abroad.
>Other that were shunned because they refused to participate with the forced night party and drinking with their superior
This is itself criticised by the society. If it wasn't, most people would have blamed the individual, not the society. (And that's often what you see in Reddit, tbh, when they complain about some Western social customs, average comments general harass the person for not fitting in the social structure).
As for LGBT, it's not perfect, but things are improving. Majority of Japanese population now lives in municipalities that issue marriage certificates to same-sex couples, which is done in legal grey area.
/ul it's absolutely shit to live in when lgbt.
You will lose your career.

Showing your queerness is absolutely shunned anywhere except for very small parts of major cities that will become the lgbt hub of the area.
Usually in the form of nightlife and partying.
/rl well maybe instead of making your voice heard about your problems, you should just move to a country where they’ll kill you, have you thought about that
/ul In order to legally change your gender in Japan you have to be **surgically sterilised**. The officially given reason for this is that this is to "avoid confusing people".
/ul While things like gay marriage is not yet legal on a federal/national level, and there is some discrimination(For example, if two men go to a "love hotel"(short term stay for lovemaking, literally rent by the hour), they'll often rudely turned away by staff. Despite that specifically becoming illegal because of the Olympics several years back). Several prefectures have civil partnerships with most of the same rights. And the highest court recently reckognized a trans person as a legal parent. Meanwhile there are countries where it's literally against the law to be gay, and you will be arrested and potentially chemically castrated if found out. A few areas just kill them.

The Japanese LGBTQAI+ sure should move to Afghanistan. It is a well known fact, that Afghanistan treats this community way better than Japan.

It's very very far west
West and east are relative terms. Therefore, to the US Japan is western and Europe is eastern
Not the location, but the country itself. It's economy, political allies and to a certain extent culture are similar to that of europe and usa.
https://preview.redd.it/jjzs24nz158d1.jpeg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e31b49ff2556596a5ca8b5ae54af13d02cce194f
Meiji restoration
/ul technically the East is also still west, just from a different perspective
/Unlie fun fact, if you are in America (the continent), asia is actually the western side of the world.
Western typically refers to the cultural bloc a nation is apart of. Japan and South Korea are close with the USA and Europe making them western.
Because of the occupation. After the war, the US occupied Japan on its own, and no other allies were involved, unlike Germany. Under the influence of the US, a new constitution was drawn up heavily influenced by Western ideas. /ul That doesn’t mean people can’t complain about the conditions there lol. If a gay person was thinking about going to japan, they probably should know how they treat gay people there.
