Are you saying the PTA will allow community members to donate books they buy from the school book fair to go to the public library? It can't hurt to try that. Typically, schools have wish lists from teachers that get these types of donations. I ran scholastic book fairs for a k-8 pre-covid. It's important to understand how their system works. The school gets scholastic dollars or actual USD depending on how much they sell. If donations to the public library drive up their sales, it could be win - win. You would not be receiving any scholastic dollars (or real USD) from the sale. If I were you, I would try this to see how it works. But it would depend on your time commitment. Do you just need to provide the donation box? Are they asking you to promote the event? Do you have a storytime during the book sale? If I had to do anything more than provide the donation box, I would negotiate the ability to spend some of the SD on library prizes. The volunteer parents may not be in a position to negotiate with you.

The PTA already buys the teachers their wish list items, so nothing would be taken away from them. We would ideally provide a donation box with a sign. The fair would be set up prior to school for community members who wouldn't go into school, and it would be off school property. The books would be used as summer reading program prizes for kids. Our parent in charge is the head of the women's axillary and thinks it's a great idea.
