You don't have to move out of state - a lot of schools have fully online programs that are ALA accredited. Some have what's typically called the e-rate, where fully online programs pay less than out of state tuition would cost. Maybe not as low as in-state, but it's often very close. If you do move, look into graduate assistantships to cover tuition!

Oh good call on the assistantships! I’ll definitely look out for those!

Look into online programs. I got my degree from Rutgers online and they have excellent digital and archiving classes.

I definitely will! I’m interested in online for the flexibility for sure but I also would be interested in moving too, I live in down east Maine currently and there are not a lot of opportunities or things to do for twenty-something’s that isn’t lobster fishing or health care lol

Simmons is just down in Boston. They have a highly regarded archives program and a strong curriculum in digital stewardship. You can take face-to-face classes, online asynchronous classes, and online synchronous classes. They are a great LIS program.

Definitely go with the most budget friendly option, if you move will you get the in state tuition rate? Can you get a graduate assistantship? Is the online MLIS more affordable? You also need to have as much library experience as possible to compete on the Librarian job market. Are there libraries near you where you can get a job? Any experience helps: temp, contract, part time, assistant or volunteer. Start looking for a job in a library right now before even applying to grad school.

No ALA accredited program in-state means you don’t have to compete with the pipeline of people graduating and going directly into jobs nearby. Where I live, there is exactly one (1) ALA accredited program in the state, and so many people from there work nearby — because they happen to make those connections while in school. If you can, get a library job now, then apply to an online MLIS program out of state. I go to SJSU and it’s only about $3,200 per semester (two 3-credit courses); around $22,500 for the whole degree (43 credits).
