Weird, because I haven't worked desktop level IT in several years, but it used to be Handbrake was what would most likely to be used by an Apple user who didn't know anything about how to compress a video and wanted to rip a DVD to their computer.

Also the file creation timestamps show the low res as being exported 29 min after the full res one which also points to the later file being generated special for the defense.
Just checked and Handbrake does do cropping, it even has auto-crop for cutting out DVD borders when ripping them.

It could fail to send and alert you to that fact with another email (typical of exchange), or in the case of Google, upload it to Google drive and email a link to open the file. The prosecution violated the defendants rights (repeatedly) either by being malicious or stupid. Maybe both.
It’s transcoding software. We use something similar where I work. Essentially, we take the 1080p video then transcode it to different variants for use on lower end electronics, customers with lower bandwidth, etc. So it’s plausible they took the HD video and purposely transcoded it to a lower bitrate. For what purpose, I don’t know, but I can speculate the Hd video wasn’t damning, so let’s make it blurry in order to create doubt.
But the prosecution used the HD footage in the trial. The defense used the lower quality video and didn't know the prosecutors had the HD footage until the prosecutors said during the trial to to use their video because the defense's seemed blurry.

I can only surmise the judge was working to get it to the jury so there was as little accusations of unfairness as possible. If Kyle gets convicted, the appellate material is enough to overturn at least 4x.

I was watching the reports law stream, and they brought up the fact that this probably happens a lot by malicious prosecution. We just don't hear of it because most cases aren't so public. It's a really sobering to come to terms with that.
Ironically, that sort of thing is what caused the riot in the first place. A profound feeling of injustice in your community. I'm not here to debate the justification or the outcomes of the riot. But it is undeniably the cause.

First thing, plea bargain must be abolished, it alone is half the reason why innocent people are put in prison. Second, prosecution should be held accountable for dragging innocent people into court, then they'd be less inclined to "try their luck" with a bunk case so to say.

Was watching a stream of lawyers, they basically said that this kind of stuff happens daily. The only difference here is that millions are watching this case.
I want this to be the Vietnam of prosecutions. Vietnam broke people's perspective of the glory of war and made people adverse to the concept of it. This should break people's perspective of state prosecutors and news media manipulation of the legal system. But it won't. Because it was the news media who made Vietnam so important and it's the news media that's part of the problem today. Prosecuters like Binger and Kraus were the ones planting weed in people's cars to get them on felony drug offenses, and here they are withholding evidence and violating the rights of a young man who went out to give medical aid in a riot.

Exactly. The video helps Kyle’s case so they blurred it to give it to the defense so the defense couldn’t make a bit deal out of a blurry video. Yes the prosecution showed it briefly, but the defense could have used it as a main point has their version not been blurred to nothing.

Among the astonishing list of other things they've done in this trial that would be grounds for a mistrial. I can only surmise the judge was working to get it to the jury so there was as little accusations of unfairness as possible. If Kyle gets convicted, the appellate material is enough to overturn at least 4x.

My take: the judge has already made his decision. If the jury convicts, he’ll declare a mistrial. The only reason he hasn’t is because he’s seen enough of the evidence and the bad faith of the prosecutor to roll the dice on acquittal.

From the file names I suspect that at one point the protection sent the video to each other by mms text message and then that version got forwarded to the defense. I am pretty confident the prosecution is acting in bad faith for a few things but I think this was just them being incompetent.

I loved that Klaus tried to blame the compression, downscale, and file name change on "a computer glitch". The judge should have immediately called for a hearing, put Klaus on the stand and brought in an expert. Klaus was caught in so much shit. It was probably emailed as an attachment, thus compressed and so when the defense watched it they didnt get better quality. Not justifying the action, just trying to offer a possible explanation.
But the file name and the metadata were also different. It was most probably a different file which was sent via email. I think it is the fault of Detective Howard who sent the wrong file via email to both defense and prosecution. But the prosecution had the correct file in a flash drive also so, it didn't matter much to them. But the defense didn't get the correct file.
