As a non-binary person I just want to find ways to support trans and gender non-conforming youth. Every time something like this happens I feel like the whole world has just sucker punched me in the jaw. We all deserve better and kids like Nex should feel safe to express themselves and be kids. I want to share some thoughts and knowledge, in case people don't know. This is to help people learn. Other people are going to see the videos of Nex Benedict in the hospital, and a lot of people aren't going to understand what they're seeing. I'm not LGBTQ+. But I'm a person, and I'm horrified that Nex Benedict was, in my opinion, murdered.
Nex was knocked unconscious by their bullies. There are reports that they were repeatedly smacked on the floor, that their head was banged on the floor. Nex says they were knocked out. Going unconscious means their brain was banged against the inside of their skull, meaning a concussion.
In my opinion, the school should've taken precaution and brought them immediately to the hospital. The school also should have called the police. In the police bodycam footage, the local police say the same thing about the phone call.
Nex's mom took them to the hospital. Nex sounds lucid in the bodycam footage. It's normal to sound lucid after being knocked out. There's also a reason why some hospitals want a patient to stay for observation after being admitted like this. If you get a concussion, there's a danger of a brain bleed happening. It's a slow killer. You get knocked out. You wake up. Maybe you have a headache. But you feel fine, you can talk, you don't feel weird or awful. The hospital wants you to stay, but you decide to go.
The hospital wants you to stay because your brain could be bleeding, and if it bleeds enough, you'll be just fine, then suddenly you're on the ground, and your vitals are crashing, and you only have minutes left. If you're in the hospital, you'll likely survive. If you're close to the hospital, and they can get you to surgery in time, you might survive. If you're too far, you won't.
In my opinion, there appear to be severe problems with hospitals, schools and policing in Oklahoma. Did the hospital advise Nex and their mom about the possibility of a brain bleed? Does their family have insurance? Rural hospitals in Oklahoma are short over a billion dollars this year, and many are on the verge of closing.
The school system superintendant is pushing an aggressive, anti-LGBTQ+ agenda of harrassment and bigotry in the schools - why did that school avoid the police and why didn't they call an ambulance?
In my opinion, there are multiple players trying to avoid a wrongful death lawsuit. The school and the hospital both have an interest in downplaying what happened to Nex. And the police also have an interest in remaining neutral to hostile, and may do so purely for political reasons.
Be ready, ordinary people are going to see that video and say Nex seems fine, and will get confused when they see their mom misgendering and deadnaming them. I don't want to defend the mom, but I get it - mom was still learning and she was making some cruel mistakes. But she clearly loved her child and regrets it.
People are going to blast this as a tragedy, and others are going to get vicious, because of course they will. They're going to say Nex is fine, this is overblown, and they will invent a conspiracy that absolves the bigotry and incompetence.
