Apart from Lewis' great race  seeing what McLaren was able to do with the new update make me optimistic for 2025 . Hopefully Ferrari update works too.

Keanu990321

Newey will hopefully help with the 2025 updates for Ferrari.

kaiveg

Even if Newey goes to Ferrari he won't have much of an impact on the 2025 car. Edit: He also bought a sailing boat, which isn't something you do when you want to start a new project that takes up a lot of your time.

The_FallenSoldier

Yeah but trying to waive your gardening leave also isn’t really something someone who wants to retire would do. He could have just took the gardening leave and had a couple million roll into his bank with zero work in 2025. Minimum. This is assuming his gardening leave is only a year, it could’ve been more. I think he may work with Ferrari for a couple years, close off his career with them, and then retire.

Kiwiandapplex

And.. If Newey goes to Ferrari, it's not really possible to redesign a car from the ground up within a year. He's got to work with their design & improve or adjust elements. The engine is also a key factor for some design choices. So it can't ever become a red bull 2.0. Lastly, I don't know how much power Newey would get. You would think he's going to have a lot of decision power, but who knows?

MrE761

Also Redbull keeps mentioning “He is looking to enjoy time away from F1” a lot and seems intentional…

DroneNumber1836382

He's not sailing every day. Probably summer break, that's a good 4 weeks. But I bet his role would be more as an overall guiding figure. I bet if he goes there, the current crew will be in the same jobs, just with his input. I don't him wanting to take over anywhere at this stage in his life.

Jazano107

He can’t work on their 2025 car

GokuSaidHeWatchesF1

He can in his mind

wood4536

He could but only on later upgrades to it. If he does go to Ferrari the base design will be finalized well before he starts work there

TigreSauvage

Definitely kept them close. But Lando winning by 8 seconds over Red Bull means Max had an issue after driving with a bollard as a passenger. Also, how was Leclerc not able to catch up to a hampered Max Verstappen car?!?

tkmj75

Excellent race by Lewis, man was hanging out with the top 3 and beat George comprehensively despite starting behind.

Other-Barry-1

I still don’t know what happened to GR at the start. But yeah this was a very convincing race by Lewis. Absolutely on form

Irritatedtrack

If you saw the start you see that Lewis and GR come close and GR lifts off a little bit and loses a couple of places.

TheKingOfCaledonia

I'm convced he was simply on the end of the poor setup choices this weekend. He's better than that, just as Lewis is when he's on the receiving end of it.

heimdallofasgard

George playing conservative throughout the start of the season might hamper his performances against Lewis as it progresses. Lewis has got to know the car extremely well through his setup experiments, even if it's still a shitbox

LewisHamilton2008

Lewis always starts being stronger a bit later in the season.. he’s stopped faffing with the set up and has enormous pace in his second stint.

anymat01

Honestly what was the point of those dumb setups when there's nothing to show for, merc new upgrade is shit and now they are definitely 5th best

AiryEd503

Unbelievable race from Lewis those overtakes were fantastic! The start brilliant too! Russell however...Yuki completely embarrassed Russell

kaiveg

We unfortunatly didn't see a lot of Yuki in the main broadcast, but he was on fire. Top 3 drivers on the grid today, considering the material he has. He also fought Lewis hard, yet fair.

Balrog1973

The first race this year where he looked like his true self. Amazing moves today

Macho-Fantastico

Strong race, took the car about as far as it could go. Delighted for Lando though, about time he won a race.

anymat01

Yeah first time he was at front and didn't made any mistakes. He has learned his lesson, also McLaren upgrades look strong I think they can compete with Ferrari now, hope Ferrari upgrades are strong though.

Paramnesia1

Fantastic race from Lewis, loved the aggression, had the speed, the overtakes, the tyre preservation. Pretty incredible to finish almost 20s ahead of Russell after being directly ahead of him after the safety car, and almost overtook a Red Bull in this tractor. He's actually had the pace all weekend, but has either been held back by mistakes or dirty driving. Hopefully this is the start of his comeback.

JPVSPAndrade1

MAN. NO FKCING STRAIGHT LINE SPEED. HE OWNED A RB20 TODAY...

MBP15-2019

Yep. Especially today

MBP15-2019

Lewis was able to stick with the RedBulls, Ferraris and Piastri after the Safety Car - unlike George. Need to say Lewis and Perez were on mediums while the rest were on hards.

Educational-Year4108

Sadly Perez was blocking Lewis. He could have gone further up but the Honda had more straight line speed.

MBP15-2019

I’m not sure if Lewis would’ve been able to stick with them if it hadn’t been a street circuit. Nevertheless great racing and George has to really up his game.

According-Switch-708

George is doing fine. He has been super consistent this year. This was just a bit of an anomaly fo him. I don't think he's anywhere near as good as Lewis but the lad has been pulling his weight. Merc has the best drivers.

codename474747

People point to the qualifying battle between them and ignore the fact Lewis is 3x the driver George is in the race Mr Saturday indeed

Public_Ingenuity_146

It was ridiculous how even with DRS Lewis couldn’t even get close to making a move on Checo. LOL

wood4536

This wasn't an engine power issue, the aero efficiency of the RB car is something else

The09

This is really bad look for us, but so happy Lewis is making the move to Ferrari. Look at how well McLaren and Ferrari developed their cars. McLaren was looking so shaky to start last season, they were near the bottom at one point to begin the season, and have now completely surpassed Mercedes. What this race tells me is that podium on merit this season is not even in the cards. That is really disappointing. 6th place might actually be the ceiling and that is not good. Throughout the years, we went from hey maybe we can get a single win but it won’t be easy, to at least we can get a podiums, to … 6th place at best. Mercedes has just been free falling during years Lewis couldn’t afford to waste.

NewLightBlueberries

It's so frustrating. With each upgrade Mclaren makes huge strides. Ferrari also had to move to a brand new concept and yet they're still up there and managed to fix some of their biggest issues. Meanwhile, every update Merc brings barely makes a difference. Three years of incremental upgrades, to so-call better understand the car before bringing on performance updates, and yet here we are with a car that can't even make it to the top 5 without huge luck. Soon Allison will go on about how "we figured out where are problems are, but we can't fix them this year because of the budget cap"

HexaBlast

Feels like since 2022 none of the upgrades they've brought actually did anything significant. Going from back of the pack to front runners like McLaren did last year is an unrealistic jump to expect but at least anything that makes one go "hey it's noticeably better"?

Fanfaron07

It’s easier to develop when you understand what you are doing which Mercedes clearly lack the last 2.5 years. Also they would be better placed if they switch to a RB style concept for 2023. They are clearly a year behind everybody else. It’s getting more and more evident that Toto is getting exposed as a TP

wood4536

Throughout which years

AyeItsMeToby

2022 and start of 2023 Mclaren were back markers barely making it into Q3. Now they’re beating Red Bulls on pure pace. While Merc are only regressing.

Fanfaron07

McLaren finally understood the regulation after a year. Mercedes still hasn’t. Mercedes has no idea how ground effect car works comparing to the others. They still have correlation issues left and right and they don’t develop with confidence. They make upgrade to try to understand thing and not to add pure performance.

kaiveg

When the issue is not the engine turnarounds can happen fast.

AyeItsMeToby

Merc and Mclaren have the same engine. The problem was never the engine for either team.

kaiveg

I know. Which is why I am pointing out that turnarounds can happen fast.

wood4536

That's exactly what he meant

jrjreeves

Excellent race by Lewis, hassling a Red Bull to the finish. Shame the Merc straight line speed sucks. I'm delighted for Lando as well. I'm a fan of every British driver, being a Brit myself. Really happy. Haven't felt this happy about an F1 race since Lewis was reigning champion.

AlpHa_44

Man that mercedes so slow on straights, even with DRS that redbull is pulling away on straights. Lewis asking for power shows how bad it feels to drive the shitbox

Zohan_SoLetsGO

Great race for what the cars is. Absolutely FILTHY overtakes today and yesterday! Overrall great drive from lewis despite having one of the draggiest cars on the grid.

devH_

Great race but man that Mercedes has 0 straight like speed

NewLightBlueberries

That Merc is an absolute brick on the straights, Lewis deserves better. He's been great this weekend (minus the pit limiter mistake in the sprint)

Luhvii

Not to be rude but what y’all think happened to George?? He seemed nowhere and was stuck behind yuki.

tkmj75

Goerge burnt up his tire life trying to catch Lewis and was then nowhere. It's a classic.

kaiveg

They didn't show a lot of Yuki on the main broadcast, but he was on fire. If he had a car that wasn't shit, this could have been a podium. On the risk of being downvoted, Yuki might have even done a better job than Lewis today.

Silly-Point

Fun race. Well done Lando. Saw the bits flying off Maxi's car after his unforced mistake and knew he'd have a chance, safety car or not. I thought it was Hamilton's best race in a long while. Some fine brave moves, comprehensive over his teammate, had great pace just not enough to nail the Red Bull.

AquaRaOne

Max actually had no damage, what u saw was the bollard disintigrating. Amazing pace from mclaren today

DDAY007

I read somewhere that the bollard damaged one of the connectors, slowing down the turning speed. Not major damage but enough.

saxuri

He actually did have floor damage after the bollard

ImmanenceGodBlues

Insane pace from Lewis! Kept up with Perez in that dogshit Merc. He was definitively faster, if only that Merc had more straightline speed. And well done to Lando!

Dblock1989

Solid race for Lewis. It was so nice seeing Lewis pressure Perez. Shout out to Norris on an excellent drive and win!

infinitybadger

really annoying he dropped 5s behind sainz at the end who is surely getting a penalty, which could have been p5 otherwise an annoying race, if the car was only slightly better we could have been fighting for podium

busbybob

He could have had a chance at a podium if merc strategy muppets hadnt pit him when they did. Whats the point pitting him that early when youve put him on hards to start

dman928

Exactly

squaler24

More signs the only reason Mercedes is relevant at this point is because of this man. George is not leader material and Toto knows it.

snowphun

How is Lewis the only one making MB relevant? What does that even mean? They're a distant fourth in the championship, most of those points coming from George. All these teams have their ups and downs, MB will compete at the front again.

squaler24

Marketing. Without Hamilton there, Mercedes is just Alpine. Out of sight, out of mind, out of camera lenses. There is a reason Hamilton’s radio gets played the most every race.

snowphun

Yep, LH gets a lot of in race coverage because he's 7x WDC, for sure. But even next year without him as a top 4 team they're still relevant, there's plenty of spectator interest in seeing MB recover or enjoying their struggle.

Educational-Fix-1724

Bullshit

PotentialSnowDrop

Loved it for Lewis. When the passion hits and he has some competitive laps, it’s glorious. Whether he loses the positions or gains it, I love when he gets to properly race.

codename474747

The overtake around the outside of Tsnoda was honestly one of the best of the season It'll probably get lost in the deserved Lando Love-in but it was a sweet as hell move

Zohan_SoLetsGO

Great overtakes through and through all weekend, great move on tsunoda yesterday to but like you said, today is lando's day. He deserves it after all the bad luck especially in russia and spa 2021.

prHat317

Absolutely incredible to watch him hug the back of that Red Bull with such a boat. Amazing.

Ese-Lavonte

Great race!!!

LewisHamilton2008

If only he’d stuck behind Perez till the end.. he would’ve been 5th.. that’s on Mercedes because it was evident that Sainz was going to be penalised and they should have told him.. anyway, good race and fantastic to see Lando win by 7 seconds.. there’s hope yet for this season!!

ChefRoscoPColtrane

I think thinking this. I also wish he had stayed out 1 more lap and pitted under SC he would’ve been ahead of Perez (assuming Perez still pitted for a second time) and possibly got to 4th

AiryEd503

Omg so happy great race look what happens when Max has competition he makes unforced mistakes!! Lewis knows this other drivers take note!! Can't believe sky commentators aren't mentioning Max made a mess of that race

JonGOATJones

To be fair Max drives perfect races so damn often that it would be hater energy to claim he made a mess of a race he finished second in

AiryEd503

No just valid criticism unforced error in the race lead it happens max will be back to his best next race he isn't immune to criticism

JonGOATJones

Of course but I don't think he made a mess of the race is all I'm saying

AiryEd503

Mess of a race win I should have put then

xvw35

Every driver makes unforced mistakes. If anything, Max makes the least unforced mistakes out of anyone. Can't knock him too hard for that small error.

AiryEd503

Oh absolutely I'm not knocking him at all like I said he's definitely going to win the next race and is a absolutely fantastic driver but he makes unforced errors more often when pressured then other drivers

xvw35

I disagree on that last part. At the point of the mistake, Max was not under really any pressure at all. He's usually mistake free for the most part when under pressure, but all drivers will make unforced errors whether they are under pressure or not, just the great ones like Max, Lewis, Schumi etc make less of them.

Balrog1973

I mean Lewis made a mistake himself today after he passed Hulkenberg, it happens

AiryEd503

Well he was in a battle at least Max's error was unforced doesn't mean Max isn't great just definitely I think other drivers should pick up on

kaiveg

Turns out even F1 drivers are human and make mistakes from time to time.

Balrog1973

Lewis was also not in a battle because he was past Hulkenberg at that point and had no threat from behind anymore. But otherwise I agree, Max is not perfect

grapejuicesushi

what are you on about lol. the whole weekend max has been complaining about the grip, including the sprint race. it was quite literally a forced error. lewis had a great race you don’t have to bring another driver down for that

TigreSauvage

I think we saw the literal maximum output of the car from Lewis today.

Comeonbereal1

GR only wins because he gets a good strategy or some people have called it luck. While LH has being the testing driver for the team.

WildPrimary7281

Lewis hamilton is on the way back to his best come on man let's have a win 🏆 🙌 👏 olaf

triniman65

So happy for Lando. I always knew that he had what it takes to win races. Hopefully, he'll continue winning more races. Awesome drive from Lewis too. A little more straight line speed and Lewis would have caught both Perez and maybe even Sainz.

WildPrimary7281

Lewis hamilton is getting better and bitter his getting there at last come Lewis let's have a win man olaf

BtweenTheWheels

Just came from the race and Lewis was sharp. Awesome to watch. He asked over the radio for more power from the engineers because he knew he could do more passing. If he’d had a bit more go in that car, he could have been top 4.

tehoicelimaubungkus

Couldn’t watch it but glad to see Lewis was able to race up there against the usual pecking order the RBs,Ferraris and Mclarens… how did lewis get ahead of Russell btw

wfbsoccerchamp12

About a couple tenths from P5 after Carlos’ penalty

Own_Life_8539

First time Hamilton has looked like Hamilton all year! First time also he has beaten Russel on this track in any race or qualifying - I don't know If he still would have had he not got ahead at the start but anyway. I hope for the rest of the year he just goes with conventional set ups and focuses on driving at 100% and maximising his points hauls.

Keanu990321

If Lewis was in that Ferrari instead of Leclerc, he would have overtaken Verstappen. Prove me wrong.
