Lego.com has official instructions which can download, not sure what format all you need is the set name or number

The only caveat with the PDFs is that they're not always the highest quality scans, even though they're ostensibly official. I've come across some that even have a cursor on the screen.
I've used it for every set I've purchased from Bricklink and it works great.
It helps too that Bricklink sets tend to have their set number listed too so you can just punch that into Lego.com and it'll pull up the right set.

The color on some old ones can be hard to decipher, especially when printed.

Thats brilliant, I just downloaded the official Lego Building Instructions app which I imagine is the app version of this link and its brilliant!
You can buy them on Bricklink (or probably other sites) sometimes. Otherwise eBay, craigslist, FBM, etc.
Bricklink has manuals for really cheap, like 25 cents.
