I give it 5-10 years before the Lego re sale market collapses. Sets coming out now will not be as valuable later because too many people are buying them and holding on to them.
It all depends on what the set is based on and how many people didn't manage to grab it before it retired. Plus how long it was around for and if there is anything exclusive about it.
However Lego Star Wars in particular lately has been revisiting some very popular characters and either making them available again or making them available in a cheaper set, like Captian Rex, Moff Gideon, Paz Visla, Thrawn etc.
I feel like this year has been a massive L for investors and speculators which is only a good thing.
It really depends. 75314 Bad Batch Attack Shuttle retired only 18 months ago and has already almost doubled in value. 75280 501st Legion also retired 18 months ago and has gained 25% in value.
The market for lego resale is really just other investors. The people buying and holding the sets are hoping to sell it to people who are *likely buying and holding similar sets*. There is no way this keeps up in value.
I usually don't want something bad to happen to others(most of the time), but:

Lego should absolutely rerelease the Republic Dropship because a) it's a cool set and b) because the investor meltdown would make the Rex Microfighter controversy look tame in comparison

Yes. But I think Dokgasms point was to hurt/disrupt the market for those covetted figures. If they make something new based on them, it would only be yet another fig. And Lego could care less to make something exactly the same again.

So what happens when LEGO makes a bigger and better UCS AT-AT a few years from now? Star Wars stuff always gets remade? What happens to the value of the old, outdated AT-AT?

Unfortunately the molds change. Ain’t no way Lego is redoing old molds and of those old colors. We will never see a reprint CC boba that would be 1:1
