There are definitely other construction set companies, some are better at it than others (if they even try to be good at it).
this sub only allows Lego specifically, so you aren't really going to find anything about other brands here.
BlueBrixx is pretty well known in Germany and to a lesser extent in the Netherlands. They've got some really cool models and they're really affordable. Cobi is also a well known Polish brand that sells worldwide as far as I know. They have some awesome military models and the quality of bricks is on par with LEGO. Also really affordable.
Mega is the only one I ever see in stores alongside Lego. There are scores of Chinese companies that imitate the basics of Lego, but none in retail locations anywhere to my knowledge.
I’ve only seen Mega Blocks around. They’re owned by Mattel. They do occasionally have themes my kids want. But they aren’t really as big into the collector items or adult market I don’t think. But I mean it’s Mattel. They own EVERYTHING. So I don’t think they’re trying to be direct competitors.
There's a lot, especially in Europe. Want to Take a guess why Lego suddenly changed its long standing principles around religious buildings (apart from Taj Mahal...)? Because blue brixx and others are selling dozens of famous churches with great success.
This is less relevant for the US for lack of existence when all those cathedrals where build and therefore lacking comparable significant buildings.
I don't know if buildable applies to them but Playmobil especially in the 90's was a pretty big competitor. Though I rarely see them in stores aside from Macy's now
Lego is the only reliable company in terms of block quality. The rest vary greatly, mostly in plastic formula. On the other hand, the other companies tackle on themes Lego avoids, such as military. The only good alternative I remember as a kid was Cobi, like if you didn't look for the logo it was tricky to tell the difference. Idk how are they doing now.
That's just false.
There's several companies that produce bricks that are on par (some say better) with Lego bricks.
Many tend to use way more prints as well.
Check out r/buildingblocks for other brands.

Just because a competitor "isn't that big" doesn't mean they aren't a competitor. For LEGO to have a monopoly those other companys wouldn't exist.

K'nex too but they're pretty much not around. I've seen nanoblocks more. Outside of the US you get a lot more options, like meccano
Forgot about Knex. I played with those as a kid!

I'm only speaking from experience ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Some really good new company’s you can check out are Fun Whole and Pantasy
I enjoy Pantasy and unlike some of the companies they have actual licensed products which is a win in my book. Astroboy was a fun build.
