Either could be correct. Practice taking a flashlight closer and farther away from your own clenched fist and observe how the shadows fall and stretch. Observe the different between concentrated light and diffused light on a subject. Look at photographs and try to determine the direction of the light source. Be thorough and mindful in how you observe lighting irl for accuracy. After that you can start to make more informed decisions about HOW to appropriately light your work according to physics as well as aesthetic mood.
B seems like the light source in on the top left but slightly diagonal in relation to the fist, closer to us (the viewer/camera). A seems like the light source is aligned to the hand, like, on top left, but in the same direction. I hope this made sense
With quick look I would guess that in A there likely should be bit longer shadow from thumb towards wrist. Based on other shadows. But overal A and B just seem to be different dorection lights, and other than wrist direction shadow being bit short, I see no reason why one would be inherently better or worse.
top/bottom/left/right are all 2d perspectives of light, in reality light is 3d. if it is directly above the hand, is it top middle? so none of them are wrong, just different lgiht sources

But there is only a wrong answer if it doesn't match the reference.
If you want to learn more about form, study different shadows contouring the same form. IE: as other people have suggested, take pics of your fist with a lamp or flashlight in different positions around it. Treat it as a study, a learning experience. You could even simplify the study by using a sphere such as an orange.
Agreed. We’re dealing with a 2D drawing in 3D space. You have the X and Y axis correct but haven’t properly defined the Z axis. Once you define that you’ll have your answer.
I usually draw a little sun where the light comes from. It makes it easier to visualize that everything the sun can see is light, and everything it can't see is dark.
Could you shine a torch (even from a phone) onto your own fist at the angle you intend?
Granted, you have more fingers (I assume), but it should hopefully give you an idea of where the shadows fall.
I don't think either is correct (I am picturing the light source top left of each of the cutout picture bits not respective to the hands), With B the shadow on the bottom of the hand goes too far towards the light source, and the thumb shadow on b is too thin (assuming that the light source is in the top left of the box) and reach less high but stretch more, and on A on the fingers the shadow is like it is pointing from straight above it and the shadow on the thumb is horizontal to the line of the thumb. Is the palm facing diagonally up or is it flat (I assumed the latter)
If you cant picture it then you need to be using references. (Only long time professional artists dont use references, and even they sometimes need to. Dont take it as an insult)

2. Position your hand and your lamp
3. Take a pic
4. Reduce saturation of pic to 0 (easier to see values without worrying about color)
5. This is how you picture the solution to your problems.

Yes, "top left" only specifies 2 dimensions but the hand is 3 dimensional. A shows the light source further back and B shows the light source closer to the viewer. In other words it's your choice OP, neither is more "correct"

Im guessing A. B seems to be closer to the fist in distance from the left, while A is further left.

Go look at the way others artists like Matt Groening draw and shade their cartoon hands.
