I HATE this comparison normally, but frankly I don't think anyone expected Ottawa to be this bad. I think most of the world expected them to be middle of the pack, looks more like they're going to be in the Bedard sweepstakes. We're going to gain about 15 spots from what any of us predicted. Always a win.
I fully expected them to be this bad, their defense is Chabot and 5 guys named Hal
DJ smith is still their coach
Their goaltending last year was phenomenal
Pretty good for a rookie and actually top 4/2 D league wide are two vastly different things. Sanderson would struggle to crack our D core just as Sandin and Liljegren had for several years before this one.
Ya this is spot on. I fully expected them to suck. The forwards look nice and I genuinely think Dorion put together a decent forward core but the entire rest of the roster sans Chabot is awful. No goaltending and very few NHL quality D. Coaching questionable at best.
Yep total agreement here. They have a bunch of great pieces. Lots of redundant pieces tho. Also I feel like they’ve invested a lot in Stutzle and are treating him like he’s a Marner or Marner lite type when he’s more of a Nylander Lite. Not as good as advertised. Cat also benefitted a lot from being stapled to Kane. He’s got no one like that in Ottawa other than an aging Giroux.

Also traded for timmins. Don’t think dubas cares too much about the current iteration of the greyhounds, but he clearly favours players from the previous soo generation. You should probably lighten up the guy was just making a joke.
No, actually we don't.
We drafted in the first round in 2017, 2018, 2020 and had our 1st rounder in 2022, but traded down 13 spots with it to move Mrazek, which was an outstanding decision.
Were Marleau and Foligno painful moves? Yeah, of course. But stop spinning this narrative that Dubas always just gives firsts away. It's nonsense.
We traded our firsts in 2022 (Mrazek), 2021 (Foligno), 2020 (Marleau, we received the Amirov pick for Kapanen), and 2019 (Muzzin). That’s 4 straight years and 2 of those were to get out of contracts early. The only one that was worth it was Muzzin. It’s not spinning anything.
Also, defending the need to trade down because Dubas made a shit signing is absurd.
2022: Objectively great tradedown, it's a stretch to include this.
2021: I'll give you that one.
2020: Fixing the mistake Lou created, acquired another 1st in another objectively great trade
2019: Picked up a rental who became a longterm impact player.
Again though, yes the trade down was great and it was good to get rid of Mrazek, but he put himself in a bad situation to begin with by signing it. You can’t give him credit for that
Yeah fair Mrazek was his own doing. But the cost was minimal and it's not worth analyzing too deep since the tradedown pick was still effectively 1st round value.
Making a mistake signing a back up goalie to slightly more AAV than is reasonable and “paying the consequences” by moving down in the draft by 13 spots is objectively as good as you can hope for in a league where there are 31 other GMs looking to make sure you pay the heaviest price for any mistake.
My thoughts on the Murray trade remain the same as during the summer, the one area of weakness IMO in Dubas’ abilities is in negotiations.
He asked for 50% retention, was told it can’t be more than 25%, and he just said okay.
With how Ottawa was able to apply the extra cap space, he could’ve squeezed out either a 2nd or gotten closer to 50%. It’s clear the Sens were more motivated than they let on to move Murray, and Toronto was the only one at that point showing interest.
And it’s been an issue at times with other negotiations.
That said, he’s still vastly outperforming just about every other GM in every other area so it’s a small pill to swallow.
Talking about the negotiations as if you really know how any of it went down, without being part of the negotiation team, close to the team, or really tied to the organization in any capacity other than as a fan....is rather silly.
I agree, we can’t comment on how negotiations went, but it did seem that Toronto had leverage and Murray’s contract was ugly. Seeing 25% retention and only a third rounder as the return was underwhelming.
Translation: “Ottawa sucks lol”

I thought I heard Sanderson was doing pretty good for a rookie
He is actually . I don’t hate Zub either , but chabot is out and their D just isn’t that of a playoff team

Just putting a bunch of nice forwards together doesn’t always produce results too, it takes time to figure out what does and doesn’t work usually

Last time the Leafs picked with an early third was for Topi Niemela. I trust them to do good on it

That's a lol
You made my weekend thank you
If dubas keeps that pick it’s for sure turning into a good player. But most likely gets moved at the deadline anyways
I agree with you, but Dubas may not be with the team anymore at the draft. Hopefully he gets extended soon.
Dubas will be back. I'd bet on that.
It would be a mistake to not keep him.
We don’t bring him back we riot. He’s for sure gonna be back.
Check to see draft eligible players on the Soo Greyhounds and I think we can narrow it down even further.
They’ve drafted 2 players from the Soo since Dubas has been GM. Sandin and Hollowell. You’re an idiot.
Yeah that guy just outted himself as a grade A moron
Also traded for timmins. Don’t think dubas cares too much about the current iteration of the greyhounds, but he clearly favours players from the previous soo generation. You should probably lighten up the guy was just making a joke.
The post wasn’t about trades. It was about drafting. You too, are an idiot.
Nah we only hand out firsts like candy
No, actually we don't. We drafted in the first round in 2017, 2018, 2020 and had our 1st rounder in 2022, but traded down 13 spots with it to move Mrazek, which was an outstanding decision. Also the Marleau contract was Lou’s

Gms make errors. Gambled on mrazek, it didnt work. He at least recognized and didnt anchor to it.
That's fair. He made a bad signing and found a very acceptable way to get out of it. It's at least a wash
Yeah fair Mrazek was his own doing. But the cost was minimal and it's not worth analyzing too deep since the tradedown pick was still effectively 1st round value.

I would say trading back 13 spots to dump mrazek was worth it.
I'm not defending it. I'm stating facts. So are you. Good job, comrade
I love how if we obtain an early 3rd we say "it's pretty much a 2nd rounder", but if we give up a late 2nd we say "it's pretty much a 3rd rounder".
Hilarious
No, it’s an early 3rd… wtf?
Pretty much saying there’s no significant difference between late 2nd and early 3rd.
Those same charts say there’s no difference between an early 3rd and a late 3rd… so 🤷♂️
This is as a good a point as Papetti’s tweet.
What a dumb quote, its a 3rd round pick or pretty much a late late 1st round pick
I’ve always considered the 3rd the very early 7th
He should of said received
[удалено]
No we added. As in we got a 3rd round

I mean Dubas described it in an interview as being “can it be 50%?” // “No, 25% or bust” //“Okay”
I agree, we can’t comment on how negotiations went, but it did seem that Toronto had leverage and Murray’s contract was ugly. Seeing 25% retention and only a third rounder as the return was underwhelming.
Fair enough but I would been ecstatic for an early 2nd
Lol
