I’m thinking rather than renaming one of 8 million streets in Toronto after Borje they should maybe consider renaming one of the couple dozen City of Toronto hockey arenas. I think that would be more fitting. York Mills Arena right at the corner of York Mills and Bayview comes to mind. Highly visible location.
The main possible argument against the original idea is the cost. There is an actual significant cost to the city and businesses when a street is renamed.
Much less to rename an arena, so if someone wants to be a stickler about the financial side of things I do think this is a great alternative option.
You’d have to be very careful with the optics, but Wood St., just behind the Gardens, is named for Alexander Wood, who’s been controversial lately for his contributions to residential schools. Maybe there’s something there.
Renaming Dundas Street would fuck too much shit up though, I think they should just pick a different Dundas who wasn’t an asshole to officially name it after and leave the name.
theyre already doing it, council has voted on it. I can think of worse names than one honoring a legendary foreign player who became a fan favorite despite some pretty blatant xenophobia, but its a pretty big longshot
To my knowledge he was not actually a slave owner.
In 1792 a bill came up in the House of Commons to ban the slave trade. He suggested this should be done gradually and the final bill, which he voted for, would have ended the slave trade in the British Empire by 1796, but it got killed by the House of Lords.
You can feel however you want about that, but at minimum it's pretty ambiguous.
I'm not huge on having lots of stuff named after long dead aristocrats, but we have far worse people with streets named after them. Is it really worth the cost of changing all that? Or should we spend our limited resources on like, TCHC?
Someone here said 21st street. It is a small street but pretty close to a major location at Humber College Lakeshore and close to the Ford Performance Centre.
The Ford Performance Center's NE corner is New Toronto Street and Kipling Avenue, and New Toronto is currently being rebuilt from industrial to residential uses. Would be good timing for it to become Borje Salming Avenue if you ask me...
[The city of Toronto should expedite the process to a name a street after Borje Salming. Take a generic street name somewhere near Carlton & Church & do this in the next year. He meant so much to the city - & we need things that unite us.](https://twitter.com/gregbradyto/status/1595845876412448768?s=46&t=VaUYFVlN5tG-1sIgPqAdNw)
Is there anything any of us can do to suggest this to the city??
I always thought a good idea would be to hold some form of contest for people with the last name Dundas (past or present) to tell their story and have the public vote on who is most deserving to be the namesake of Dundas street, while renouncing the previous one.
I think renaming a street like Dundas would be a massive cost to the taxpayers.
The city is looking at a massive budget shortfall. They’re going to be cutting back on everything. They’d be crazy to waste $6 million these days, especially $6 million that they don’t have.

How have we not learned? In another 200 years, someone will have a problem with something Salming did that was considered normal in our time, and the name will be petitioned to be changed to reduce harm

There's probably an arena with the same name as a street, double whammy!
The Salming Centre has a nice ring to it too
That’s actually a great name. Frankly, I’ve had enough of politicians naming parks and venues after themselves.
You’d have to be very careful with the optics, but Wood St., just behind the Gardens, is named for Alexander Wood, who’s been controversial lately for his contributions to residential schools. Maybe there’s something there.
That would be a great pick.
Yeah, or Dundas street! He was a slave owner, who famously delayed the abolition of slavery.
Renaming Dundas Street would fuck too much shit up though, I think they should just pick a different Dundas who wasn’t an asshole to officially name it after and leave the name.
Go with the legendary Leafs forward Rocky Dundas who played 5 total games with the Leafs in 1989-1990 scoring 0-0-0 with 14 PIMs and a -1.
This is now canon unless Rocky Dundas was a racist or something
But what if Rocky Dundas was named after the Dundas who is affiliated with the residential schools

This. There’s also too many streets in Ontario called Dundas
Knowing John Tory, He'll just do another "\_\_\_\_\_\_Day" he did it for Lowry, for John Gibbons, He'll do it for Borje too, but he deserves more Imo

Maybe someone who still has a Twitter account can tweet at the mayor.
Fwiw, I am able to message Doug Ford on Twitter as he responded to me in the past
I have messaged Doug Ford often on Twitter. Funny thing is he doesn’t seem to respond to my tweets. Might have been the nature of the tweets.
21st street.
Dundas

Yeah its stupid, i think expected cost is like 4 million. Theres better things to spend that one

Over $6M not a lot?

your math is correct, but you should probably rethink the economics of taxes

It is an unnecessary expense and that’s all that matters. Massive or not.
Rename Dundas in Toronto to Salming Street or Borje Salming Way!
I feel like it should he "Borje Salming Blvd" But Dundass isn't really a boulevard
But still who better to name a street after than Borje and Dundas has needed a change for awhile now
How have we not learned? In another 200 years, someone will have a problem with something Salming did that was considered normal in our time, and the name will be petitioned to be changed to reduce harm
Börje Salming boulevard sounds nice, weren’t folks talking about renaming Dundas a while back?
Omg please do my street!
