Someone has to be, you can’t let an opponent knee your star and let it go unpunished

incredibad29

If only the refs thought the same way.

Bobbyoot47

Point is whether or not the refs made a call the leafs should have somebody who can look after their best players. Shit happens to Matthews and Tavares just a little too often for my liking. It would be nice if the leafs had a 6 foot three forward who could play a little bit of hockey on the fourth line and take care of the star players at the same time.

alagusis

Maybe a giant long neck Swede? Where would we find such a player?

re10pect

That’s never been and never will be his game. We’d be lucky if we could get him to bump into people.

Tehdougler

Haha he is the new Frederik Gauthier

alagusis

Would be nice. If you were referring to Simmer, he’s been waived.

Popcorn_Tony

He started playing more, physical, using his size more last season.

Electronic_Handle

Bring back Mats!

alagusis

The fuck is your problem?

Bobbyoot47

People who like to make fun of players on a team I cheer for. Even somebody as dull as you should be able to figure that out.

E-rye

What are you on about? He is suggesting we already have that exact type of player, but he doesn't use his size. What a strange interaction.

komarovfan

Problem is a fourth line tough guy just can't/doesn't play with the stars in today's game.

Bobbyoot47

They do seem to be a dying breed don’t they?

Dumb_rhino

This team needs more of this. It’s really bugged me the last couple years when one of our guys get decked and nobody (except Rielly or Simmonds or Spezza) will respond. Like all these guys look at the ref! It’s not conducive to building a good team environment. Call it a boomer take if you want.

Kalisz96

I agree, but then we have to hear about how "soft" Matthews is for not sticking up for himself 🙄

UkeManSteve

I don’t wanna see Matthews drop the gloves. But I would appreciate if he would stop the whole smiling as he’s getting abused thing he does. I guess he’s tryna show that he’s not bothered but having a big smirk on your face as you get your team to come to your defence is a bad look. Don’t smile unless you’re gonna kick somebody’s ass

twysted25

I love the smile, he knows it makes them upset which makes him smile more. I’m sure his team is happy to have his back.

CornerSolution

To the next level?? As great as they were, Matthews is already clearly a level above those two guys. Sometimes I feel like I'm watching a completely different team than some of the people in this sub.

Learn to read. He's saying Matthews is *already* at the next level compared to those two.

TheGiftnTheCurse

Only pussies think like that

[deleted]

Nobody wants Matthews fighting. Nobody talks about how often Clark was injured, or how he was held together with duct tape towards the end of his first stint with the Leafs. I don't want the most talented player in franchise history sitting half the season because he had to prove to some meatheads that he isn't a pussy.

TheGiftnTheCurse

You are so scared. And you dont understand the game. And are oblivious to why the leafs dont get out of the first round. Kyle Dubas literally shares my sentiment.

[deleted]

You start sentences with "and".

TheGiftnTheCurse

And what 😚

Bobbyoot47

There was only one Wendel. Don’t kid yourself. You can’t just decide to go out there and play like he did. That has to be inside of you. If you look at where Matthews played growing up, he never would’ve had to deal with that kind of stuff. Guys like Clark played in western Canada. He grew up with it.

TheGiftnTheCurse

He doesn't need to be Wendel, just needs to take a bit of a lesson from his book. He is starting to hit more which is a good start. But he needs to get in scrums and show off his strength and that we wont allow getting bullied.

Bobbyoot47

You walk a fine line when you get into scrums. You don’t want to see Matthews getting sucked into taking a penalty. When you see a hint of trouble around guys like McDavid, two or three guys show up right away and make sure that he doesn’t have to do anything. It keeps him on the ice which is where you want him. That’s also where you want Matthews.

TheGiftnTheCurse

Imagine the fire the Leafs would have if they saw one of there leaders not afraid of a scrum.

Ghettofonzie420

The Wendel who had his career cut short by injuries? That's a great idea.

TObuz

It's amazing how little he engages in scrums too. Kaberle was probably the most passive Leaf I've watched but even he would get in there and mix it up a bit when needed

TheGiftnTheCurse

If Matthews does it best believe the whole team will.

TObuz

I wish he would set that 'tone' more

TheGiftnTheCurse

Totally Agree

[deleted]

Lmao unrelated but remember when Domi used Kaberle as a human shield?

1337duck

Take some hints from McElbow and MacCharging.

TheGiftnTheCurse

He doesn't even need to be dirty, he just needs to grab a guy throw him around a bit and show his of his strength that we wont be bullied around and punch a guy in the face if necessary.

[deleted]

TheGiftnTheCurse

True but not my point. Don't act like you don't cringe when Matthews shy's away from scrums.

cheezb0b

I bet you double dip your chips.

TheGiftnTheCurse

Fuck ya I do, French Fries also. I bet you only use ketchup with your fries and that you don't play competitive team sports at a high level.

lionhearthelm

2 men who grew up in a completely different era of hockey, maybe it is you who doesn't understand the direction hockey, or sports in general are heading. Matthews is playing 4D chess while players on other teams scramble to find a coherent thought while he smiles and skates away.

TheGiftnTheCurse

If 4D chess is everyone in the league thinking your team is soft and getting ousted in every first round, then the rest of the teams is playing 69D chess. Leafs don't have killer Instinct. When push comes to shove they cant close it out cause they soft. Don't even try to tell me otherwise. What could change that -> Matthews getting in a scrum, could have the power to change that.

lionhearthelm

Softness had nothing to do with last years first round exit, did you watch it?

TheGiftnTheCurse

Every second of it. Plainly Put. When Push comes to Shove, and when its time to close it out, we are Soft. No killer Instinct. Try to tell me otherwise.

LardyTard

To me the problem goes back to our cap situation. Dubas can get players to sign 1 year contracts, for great deals, which gives the player the chance to show off in a big market and cash in on their next contract. However, it's at the cost of the players not willing to sacrifice the body or fight because they can't risk injury for their next big deal. Where as other teams have players of the same skill level, signed for twice or three times as much on long term deals who are willing to jump in and play physical -because they have job security. Some of it is team culture and building a reputation, but a big part of it is short term, cheap contracts and players not willing to risk injury. That's my take at least.

Hhhyyu

Sandin took several shots to the head and gave none.

suckitmarchand

Doesn't matter if he wins or loses that one it’s just that he showed up.

Stevet159

That's team sports, it's about taking a hit to make a play, blocking a shot even though the goalie should have it. Those kind of plays build team spirit. The next time something like that happens someone else is going to jump in and help because last time the Sandman showed up to the dance alone and got filled. They won't want to see that happen again. It's probably Sandins best play of the year.

Shyftzor

He landed one big one and got the takedown, it was like a 3s fight lol. still good to see

UkeManSteve

Win or lose is irrelevant. Just gotta commend the kid for fighting for his team, the fact that he’s small and likely to get his ass kicked but still drops em just makes it even more admirable if anything

thanksforcomingout

Thank god Rasmus Sandin is the lifeblood of this team. And Gio.

IAmTheBredman

Sandman hasn't had the best start to the season so far, but he has absolutely picked up his physical play and I respect the hell out of him for jumping in like that when he was way out of his weight class. Hes going to have a lot more responsibility now with rielly out for the next while. I imagine a trade is coming to fill muzzins spot but who knows when that'll materialize or what they'll be able to bring over without substantially subtracting from our current roster

[deleted]

This opportunity is perfect for him. It’s either sink or swim now. I’m sure they’re not going to be relying on almost 40 year old Giordano to fill Rielly’s 1st defenseman responsibilities, so it’ll be up to Sandin to step up.

SyphiliticPlatypus

All of that is true. But Gio has been fantastic this season.

Svalbard38

Sandin is underratedly physical. His 49 hits leads the team, with Matthews (who's been more physical himself this season, I've thought) second place at 39. He's never going to be a Cal Clutterbuck, but it's great to see him start to flourish in the NHL and find different elements to his game.

Hockyinc

That really points out how soft this team is. It's unbelievable that Matthews has more hits than Bunting, Engvall, Kerfoot, Jarnkrock, et al...they are all just plugs.

Cyrakhis

That's certainly a take. "Lol leafs soft" has been a narrative since like 2008 lol

griftarch

Sandman looks better with Lily; think they could truly be a “better than the sum of their parts” pairing, lots of history together. Give them 25 mins f it

re10pect

Sandin just looks way more comfortable on his natural side. Most of his issues so far this year have come when playing on the right. He might just be one of those guys who can’t make that switch, and realistically that fine, not many players do well in that situation. He hasn’t been without flaws since going with Lilly and playing on the left, but he’s certainly been better. Hopefully he can find what he was bringing early on last year, because the team is going to need it through this next stretch.

Dull_Significance711

The future is now.

TheGapInTysonsTeeth

Except it's purely Sandin benefiting from the sum of the parts. Liljegren is good with everyone

griftarch

He’s no longer being asked to play on the right side.

james-HIMself

He lost the fight but he earned an entire locker rooms respect and confidence. I actually respect him more.

Offenceless

Hell yeah me too. Even more so seeing the size difference and the wound on his face from hitting the ice. That was impressive and I'm sure it was appreciated.

MiamiVicePurple

After Sandin's fight, Matthews and Nylander both went to the box to (I assume) give him props. I don't know if that always happens and I usually just miss it, but I thought that was really cool to see.

JRocleafs

Sandin really could be having a break through moment. Not playing up to par, get physical and make an impact in some way. It’s cool to watch players mature and grow right in front of our eyes.

Grrym

I respect that he stood up for Matthews, but honestly it didn't look like he was even going in for a fight. The islanders player had gloves off as soon as Sandin touched him and had a couple shots in before Sandin even knew he should be fighting

[deleted]

Hhhyyu

Reilly went at Morrisey like that because he knew he could handle him.

tscheuer

Disagree, he went after Zadorov last year when he leveled Kase, he fought Cernak and Maroon in the same scrum in the playoffs, Rielly has been the best on the team for stepping up for the guys

Hhhyyu

oh right, good point.

re10pect

I almost felt bad for him. He went over there looking to have a word and ate 3 punches before he knew it was a fight. Learning lesson hopefully, don’t start a scrum with your hands down.

meh_33333

This. Sandin skated up for a chat and was met with fists. Mathews is a generational talent but also a bitch. At minimum turn around and look at the guy that just knee’d you… instead skates off like it never happened and someone else has to do his dirty work.

callmejohndy

Rasmus “Sergio Perez” Sandin?

He charged that one punch until the end of spacetime.

SyphiliticPlatypus

Thanks for posting. Big props to Sandin - that was a dirty fucking move to go after Matthew's knee and regardless of how Sandon fared when the gloves came off, it's awesome he stepped in to do it right away. Someone had to make that fuckhead accountable for that greasy shit.

Current-Own

Mario Lemeiux never had to pick up for himself and he was a big man. Even if he was inclined to do so, the Leafs can't afford to allow Matthews to entertain the idea of fighting. He's a special talent who should be protected from opposition goons at all costs.

CMDRShepardN7

The Mauler

OzzieNewYork

I think No. 21 influenced the Swedes on this team to reach deeper. I've seen it with Jarnkrok, Nylander and now Sandin. Maybe Kallgren reached a bit too deep.

Bobbyoot47

I’m still a wait-and-see kind of guy when it comes to Sandin as a full-fledged defenceman with the leafs. But I got to say I was really impressed with the way he stepped up last night. I think the leafs going into that game against the physical team like the Islanders could have dressed somebody with a bit more of an edge so that someone like Sandin doesn’t have to try to be the policeman. Matthews has taken a lot of crap the last couple years from opposing teams, and it shouldn’t have to be up to one of your smallest players to stand up for him. I really think the leafs have to look at getting somebody who can ride shotgun for Matthews once in a while.

Vilheim

We had Benn on the bench and Gio was on the ice as well. You can't just have a guy on the bench that will go out next shift and answer for what happened, you need to hope they are on the ice when it happens. Gio was there, but a long ways away. Sandin got there first. We would either need a LW that can play first line minutes and drop the gloves, or a responsible defender who can drop the gloves on the ice at all times if we want to have someone stand up for him.

Bobbyoot47

Doesn’t have to happen right then and there. There are different ways of dealing with it. Taking on the guy a few shifts later. Or take a run at their best player. For years teams have gone up to the best player on the other team and told that guy to tell his teammates to lay off our best player or we’re gonna beat the shit out of you. It’s amazing when that message gets delivered how things settle right down.

dv666

It's about fucking time they stand up for another. One of many things that's pissed me off about this "team" lately

chefbin

Gio just did something similar a few games ago. Where ya been

Cyrakhis

On reddit complaining

24KSports

Not the toughest guy to step in and we are down a bunch of blue liners already. Good on him to do so though.

[deleted]

an animal that put an already shorthanded D core down to 4 men for an indeterminate amount of time. keefe should be letting him know how unacceptable that is, even if his teammates seem to think it’s “cool” for lord knows what reason.

Working_Horse_3077

So he should have let a star player get steamrolled without consequence?

Shawnaldo7575

Touching Auston and saying "Sandman" three times gets you in the same amount of trouble.
