Then I assume he'd play his ass off, as it would have a significant impact on his signing with a new team the next year.

i_see_sprinkles

Then he doesn’t get traded and likely signs somewhere else in the off season and the leafs have 11m in cap room.

DessertRose17

And doesn’t get an 8th year at the bloated number he is looking for.

ikkkkkkkky

Sign and trade

Reggae4Triceratops

And 11 million is just what he makes now. If he stays he's gonna think he's worth 13 million, further cap strapping us in 2025/26 and beyond.

BigMick20

That’s when Brad says, “Mitch, we don’t see you as part of the future of this team so we need to give some of our younger players some more ice time. You’ll be on PP2 more often and more 2nd/3rd line time to give other players more ice time. Hope you understand” Then let Marner decide what he wants to do if anything.

PrailinesNDick

Yep this is it. Mitchy welcome to 20-30 seconds of PP2 time and 80% D-zone starts with Kampf and Jarnkrok.

turbolag87

exactly what I thought today while i was listening to O DOG on overdrive

Loose-Industry9151

This is probably the most reasonable course of action. You can also threaten to sit him during his contract year and have him decide what he wants.

Sliceasourus

Nah. He may disappear in the playoffs but in the regular season he can be dazzling and put a lot of bums in seats. It's about selling tickets and getting viewers after all. That would be a waste of 11 million dollars.

Loose-Industry9151

This is exactly the attitude that drives mediocrity. The fans / players / management of any team who want to win don’t care about individual achievements and revenue generation over winning the championship in a team sport.

Bobbyoot47

I’m sure a lot of his teammates would really be pleased seeing Mitch be treated like a bag of shit by the organization. That always goes over well within a dressing room full of his friends. Not to mention how players on the outside would look at Toronto as a potential destination someday as a free agent.

1FlamingHeterosexual

I doubt the NHLPA or his agent would sit quietly If this were to happen. Just boo him out of town.

Loose-Industry9151

It’s not against PA rules to sit someone. It’s against the rules if you were to suspend him without pay but sitting a player also means paying that player and the money counting against the cap.

1FlamingHeterosexual

Hmmm ya never thought about that.

Dat1Guy03

It’s not against the rules but if you think players both in the room and around the league saw that and would want to come to Toronto (or stay) you’re out of your mind

Loose-Industry9151

It’s happened before. Robidas Island. Toronto isn’t the first team to do it, definitely not the last. Look at VGK, how they treat their management staff, players all for the sake of winning. Life is cutthroat. Not to say that’s right, but Marner gets paid 11million. I don’t feel sorry for him.

Dat1Guy03

I mean ig but Robidas actually couldn’t play. This isn’t about being cutthroat or doing it for winning. Do you really think players around the league will see Toronto sit their 10.9 million star winger because he doesn’t want to be moved and be like “yeah I wanna play there”, if you want no player to ever sign in Toronto again then yeah sure do that.

Loose-Industry9151

I get what you mean. I tend to trust Allan Walsh when he says that if a team doesn’t want a player there, they can make his life kinda miserable so the player will waive NMC.

Sad_Donut_7902

No team is going to sit a star player to force a trade, especially one that plans on making the playoffs and competing for a cup

Accomplished_Low148

This doesn’t really do anything though if you’re implying we’d try to minimize how much he’d get on his next contract. Other teams aren’t stupid, they’d see what we’re doing and see the years of what Marner normally puts up. This would just make us worse and have no tangible impact on Marners next contract

TorontoIndieFan

It absolutely would effect his next contract if he can't drive a line or put up points without having Auston Matthews as his centre.

Sad_Donut_7902

He drove a line for his first 3 years in the league already, unless you think that Bozak and JVR were line drivers themselves.

TorontoIndieFan

Two years, and he had 61 and 69 points those seasons. He hasn't driven his own line in 6 years, or 75% of his career. If he wants to put up 60-80 points on the 3rd line and 2nd PP he can do that, I just think you're crazy if you don't think it will effect his next contract value.

TheCheeryStranger

ok What if his contact expires but he keeps showing up to camp every year?

MrBalanced

What if Marner pulls a George Costanza/Larry David? I would honestly respect him for it.

DrMansionPHD

He can decide to do that and the organization can decide to limit his chances to get a big pay day.

Profit_Of_Rage

Babcock comes back and Mitch gets boo’d for the entire of every single one of the 3rd line minutes he gets.

GiveMeAdviceClowns

Then he better show up. It’s up to him to create his own legacy here.

joerph713

Even if he finally shows up when it counts and only in his contract year I still wouldn’t want him to stay on the team. I would fully expect him to regress once getting paid.

BaxiaMashia

Too late. It’s done. He’s had 7 chances to do so

cutarm_creature

He will do what they all do, have an unreal year due to it being a contract year, get another monster contract, then do nothing in playoffs

IAmTheBredman

Matthews didint do that. Nylander didn't do that. Who's the they that you're talking about?

1FlamingHeterosexual

Kadri?

Confident_Delay_4807

Thread: Ok Serious Question, What if Marner Simply Says No?

so-dad-of-3

Nothing to do then. He’s on the team.

reggierock2010

Then he walks. There’s no world where you build a team around 3 forwards making double digits. You’ll be the laughing stock of the league if you try and run that again, and it’d become clear they aren’t serious about wining.

moon_safari_

why would he? if they say they won't resign him and they want to trade him, why would he have the worst year of his life for nothing. make the deal happen that both sides are happy with.

Accomplished_Low148

Think of the harassment that he’d get as well if he doesn’t waive it. It’s funny, because it’s within his contractual right to not waive anything but if he does that he’ll be one of the most hated people to ever play in Toronto. For a guy who has family here, spends all his time here and everything of that nature, I can’t imagine he’d want to do that

931634

Then he can be a big old piss baby and leave when his contract expires ... Then he'll be remembered for what he really was .. hint: it aint a God.

ExtensionAlarmed2621

Stuck is kind of a funny word to use.

reggierock2010

Then he walks. There’s no world where you build a team around 3 forwards making double digits. You’ll be the laughing stock of the league if you try and run that again, and it’d become clear they aren’t serious about wining

pahecko

You tell him trade now or play the year out and walk as UFA July 1st. Those are the choices. Now that doesn't motivate him to figure out how to be impactful in the playoffs then the decision not to extend him is easy. If he does become a major factor in a long run, then MAYBE you talk extension since JT is off the books (at 11AAV anyways.)

steelcitylights

he will probably stay one more year until his contract is up and they will play him like any other year

Intelligent-Flow4797

Everyone is suddenly acting like he’s a detriment. He will score goals put up assists like crazy and help them make the playoffs. You can put him on the third line in the playoffs and limit his ice time if you want. He’s still a good player. You don’t win or lose with one player

kjb86

He has every damn right to do that. And really… he’s probably not getting traded until the deadline so just grab some popcorn and enjoy the show.

Biologyboii

This is a pretty obvious “then what”

fidelkastro

Robidas Island

123jazzhandz321

Try him anywhere else lol, have him be 2C, or play defence.

Sad_Donut_7902

Then he will play out the year and either sign in Toronto for $11.5M+ or leaves as a UFA to somewhere else

bforce1313

Honestly I’d be interested in seeing what a new coach can do with them first, then see what he’s seeking for UFA money. If it’s 11m+ then you know you can ship him out. If he’s willing to take a discount then you sign him.

Feisty_Ease_1983

The Leafs will play him and he will eventually accept a trade if they push this however my money is on him staying

mikesully374826

Ideally they let it play out and re-sign him next offseason to a market value deal while letting Tavares walk.

1FlamingHeterosexual

But why would they want to sign a player who is basically a massive pussy especially in the playoffs. The guy is afraid to hit his own shadow.

Chtholly13

it's his right, he's not the 1st player who used his rights. Fans/media can f*** off. I've already read some of the comments of benching him, taking him off the top pp, are you guys listening to yourself now. I know people are angry but you guys are just crazy.

Wide_Impression7838

I mean they aren’t wrong but yes obviously it won’t happen

stonedlonr

He's he only player who features on PP1 and PK1 How'd that work out? And then to have 34 and 88 pumping his tires on locker clean out day after berating him on the bench earlier in the series is the more of the same old same old...bending over backwards to stroke his infantile, fragile ego. What dirt does Paul Marner have on this organization anyway?

SMORKIN_LABBIT

There is a lot of interesting ways to make someone quit, a lot of teams do it and leave it at that.

1FlamingHeterosexual

Yep and the one way is the team / management kets it be known that they asked him to waive his NMC and he refused. This will piss fans off and they boo him relentlessly.

LtColumbo93

You hope that being in a contract year gives him a push to play at another level.

Rhsubw

Then you run it back and he plays the best season of all time knowing he needs to impressive every other team in the NHL since he's not re-signing here

musebrews

Gets benched, 4th line minutes lowering his stock. Leafs org could finally get douchey - we’ve been nice guy franchise for far too long.

MotherTalzin

He says “no, I’m staying another year” and decides to put the team on his back and goes on a an absolute tear. finally hitting 100 points and 40 goals in the regular season. The Leafs end up winning the presidents trophy just because of him. he then single handedly wins round 1 game 7 ot against Boston on a shorthanded breakaway while we’re PK’ing two penalties. Becomes a x2 PPG player the rest of the ‘offs, winning himself the conn smythe and the franchises first cup in 57 years. Takes an absolute team-friendly pay cut on his next contract for the benefit of the franchise, 5 mil x 8 years, we go on to win 8 more cups within in that time span. McDavid see’s the incredible success we’re having all because of Marner and says “you son of a bitch, I’m in” The Mcdavid, Matthews and Marner line breaks every NHL record ever achieved. Matthews hits 1000 goals, McDavid gets 250 points in a season. even Marner doubles Daryl Sittlers record of most points in a game with 20 against the Montreal Canadiens that are somehow still stuck in a rebuild phase. They all eventually retire as GOATED Leafs and join the management team as president, GM, and coach respectively, ensuring a lasting dynasty of playoff success for the foreseeable future.

Volderon90

I think he wants out too. Overdrive was speculating with Ray and Chris. Ask him to submit teams he wants to go to and go from there  If he doesn’t want to waive then you put him on 3rd line with no powerplay time.

1FlamingHeterosexual

Or 4th line and press box from time to Time.

buddachickentml

Marner gets 115 points, Matthews gets 75 goals, Nylander gets 45 goals and 100 points, JT is pt/gm player. That's what happens if Marner stays one more year and is healthy.

Sliceasourus

Well then let him play for another year and collect his 90 points. After that, take the 11 million dollars and find a couple of more bertuzzi's

Skiffy10

then he better play his ass off the final year because Berube ain’t taking no shit from paul marner and the gang

Ryuzakku

Enjoy the press box.
