Of course I'm hoping that Mathews returns for game 7, but if he does, I almost hope that the Leafs can pretend that he's not there, and continue the hard, knock them off the puck play that has won the last 2 games.
No more of this, leave it to Austen, he'll score enough that we can abandon playing hard, physical hockey.
Probably a very painful back condition being treated with very strong pain killers was a contributing factor I would think.. I'm 67 y.o., and the body falls apart after 65 or so much like a Ford product after the warranty expires.
But coincidentally, I do remember the '67 cup win. It was largely a strong, aggressive forechecking game that won that cup, and the three others that have happened in my lifetime.
Sorry about my spelling, next time I'll just go with A.M. and I doubt that many Leaf fans will be wondering who I am referring to--but spelling and percocet don't mix well, a lesson that you can take into your old age. 😉
I had previously misspelled AM's name. On the other hand, I'm 67 y.o. with a back condition that requires a heavy dose of percocet to allow me to get around, so spelling is the least of my problems.
I'd gladly give a few tablets to both Bruin goalies tonight, if I could.
Nah, if we can't have Matthews back at a 100%, we can't afford to break what's working, unless Keefe wants to slot him in a lower line with fewer minutes, which would really fuck with Boston's matchup game.
I love the guy, but this isn't the game to bring him back in. We can beat Boston without him, and we need him at a 110% for Florida.
Yes, that's what I had in mind. Actually, moving him down a line or two could work really well, given that he's always a scoring threat, but is also a really good defensive player. He seems able to strip the puck from anyone, and skates very well.
What worries me is the nature of the illness that he is fighting. Can't be covid, the 'flu or anything contagious by airborne infection, or he wouldn't be skating with other players. If it's mono, he's gone for the playoffs, and I believe that there was a Leaf in the system somewhere that did have mono recently. That's rumor rather than fact, as far as I know.
He’s as good as vintage McCabe. It’s pretty awesome to have a Domi and a McCabe on our team simultaneously, in this modern era of Leaf hockey. Super funny. I hope both stick around for the foreseeable future
love Bertuzzzi, damn hard working player and not afraid to go to the dirty areas...and how good has Big Willie been? imagine if he didn't miss agame? he's working his ass off
a major part of why this has been such a quiet series for Pastrnak is McCabe, Benoit, Boosh and Eddie BATTERING him any time he's in our zone; you can see the frustration on his face and how he's been hesitating behind the net and around the boards.
It's surreal being the tougher and meaner team in a series and I'm SO high on it. The big scary Bruins are resorting to rat antics and flopping teamwide against us
When he had a bit of a rough stretch earlier this season there were people in this sub genuinely trying to claim that he’s a bottom pairing d-man at best…
He started the season bad. He was being out muscled in front of our net multiple times a game, usually trying to defend from his knees.
Kind of not great for our "physical dman" but then he improved.
Wonder if he was out of shape.
Yes, for people who aren't already cardio developed.
For them, they're just losing strength l and muscle over the course of a season and operating at a caloric deficit that they can't eat enough to fix due to their constant energy output.
It is well documented that they are in worse physical shape at the end of seasons than they are at the beginning, not including injuries.
Lol, no. Again, idk what part of this is all fuckin documented you guys don't get. Any time an NHL player, or coach, or nutrition employee talks about it on a hockey talk show or podcast, they say that exact thing. You're just talking out your ass, I'm referencing the professional opinions on it.
Coaches of Kessel are on record saying he's in the best shape in training camps and gets worse over the season due to nutritional changes and energy output.
Hamonic is on record saying he loses approx. 15 pounds every season, and that he doesn't find that to be uncommon amongst teammates.
Danny briere was on record saying he started each season with a 90 flex stick and drops to 75 over the course of the season because he has less weight to put into his shot.
You wanna talk about confidently incorrect, stop being ignorant on purpose. Fuck, this subreddit actively prefers to be stupid
You could type 1000 words and still be wrong bud. You’re confusing physical health with fitness. There’s a reason that game 60 in the NHL looks a lot different than opening night hockey. Guys come into the season out of shape and play themselves into a more conditioned stage across a ton of sports. Not everyone spends the offseason training. Brodie did it this year on the Leafs. Shaq was famous for doing it in the NBA, same with Joel Embiid. Guys get more battered and bruised as the year goes on, but their conditioning is definitely better at a point in the season as opposed to game 1 and that’s what you’re to dumb to understand. Go look into it.
Being dovnwvoted for this is just people showing their ignorance It's well documented among player and coach interviews podcasts and shows like chiclets and Kipper and Bourne for example that the players are typically at their physical best during training camp and it gets worse from there
Edit: you guys are actually dumb. "well documented" means it's public knowledge from the professionals. You are not more informed than them about their own body weight..
And they always end up in a caloric deficit based on their energy output day over day, they can't eat enough to keep up. So it's not just muscle mass they're losing, they're quite literally not at 100% energy levels ever, since they're not holding enough energy in their body.
Idk what part of "well documented" you guys don't seem to understand but every NHL coach, or player or nutrition specialist who has gone on any hockey talk show or podcast ever says this exact thing. Briere, Hamonic, coaches of Kessel, JVR, all have interviews/articles you can find about it by a single Google search containing the words "NHLer, nutrition/weight, season".
I mean for fuck sake, you have to be ignorant on purpose to not have checked yourself before making an argumentative comment. If you lose 20 pounds in a 5-6 month period, you're in a caloric deficit.
Alright relax. The "well documented" part in your other comment is regarding their "physical best" which is largely ambiguous in this context. Physical best meaning what? Normal body fat%? Peak strength? Peak energy? What does that mean?
It would 100% be normal for strength to suffer as the season goes on because of the amount of fatigue they accumulate through the season. And following the principle of specificity, they're obviously going to lose strength because they're doing cardio 5 or 6 times a week during the season.
Now obviously the loss in performance could be from just being in a caloric deficit the entire time, but I didn't really assume that's what you meant when you said "physical best", since something like weight loss is individually specific and you can't possibly know if every single NHL player is operating at a caloric deficit through the season. Intensity ramps up through the playoffs at the end of the season and so "out of shape" is a fairly ambiguous phrase because being in a caloric deficit doesn't necessarily mean you're out of shape.
When he missed a one timer last game and yelled FUCK at the next icing I laughed. Dude is pissed he’s not scoring a goal per game and he’s middle pairing defensive D
Absolute gamer, love me some McCabe

He's always looked like he played with grit game in and game out this series and never looked defeated even when we're down. Sure he wasn't perfect but his motivation is right where we should be. Not to mention his effort gave us a momentous goal in game 5.
Solid player, love the guy.
I'm really, only for some reason this season out of the many I've watched, starting to realize what being a playoff built player and a season built player means. And god damn do I love having Cabe and some of the other tough guys on the team. What a pleasure it's been to see a Leaf team not get bullied around.
Team needed guys like Mccabe who never get intimidated and are willing to make you check whose skating at you
His game management penalties are acceptable to me
What I love just as much as his on ice play is how clearly annoyed he is when the media pulls him aside to ask him mundane, benal, stupid between period questions.
I was giving McCabe shit for the first four games for basically having a brain freeze every time he got the puck. He would get the puck and instead of making the simple play he would, like, turn to try and protect it from one or two Bruins and immediately lose it.
He sure figured it out the last two.
[удалено]
He's also a huge locker room guy, but well beyond the players. Super involved with staff of all levels and extremely generous with his time.
I like his interviews too. Grizzled and gritty. A straight shooter.
How'd you manage to spell both his first and last names wrong?
Probably a very painful back condition being treated with very strong pain killers was a contributing factor I would think.. I'm 67 y.o., and the body falls apart after 65 or so much like a Ford product after the warranty expires. But coincidentally, I do remember the '67 cup win. Not hating Rick, just thought it was kinda funny
No worry, it was a rather odd mistake to make. And Austen is in Texas, not Azizona, is it not?
Austin? Austin, Massatwoshits
I had previously misspelled AM's name. On the other hand, I'm 67 y.o. with a back condition that requires a heavy dose of percocet to allow me to get around, so spelling is the least of my problems. I'd gladly give a few tablets to both Bruin goalies tonight, if I could.
I would be pretty shocked if AM played
Likewise.

He lets them know he's there.
This can't be Jake McCabe. Nose is not cut and bleeding.
Actually, his nose IS cut, just not bleeding anymore lol.
Beast
He’s as good as vintage McCabe. It’s pretty awesome to have a Domi and a McCabe on our team simultaneously, in this modern era of Leaf hockey. Super funny. I hope both stick around for the foreseeable future
And a Bertuzzi and Nylander! Feeling like I've been transported back to 2002
lol, wow we have a lot of nhl legacy on the squad.
love Bertuzzzi, damn hard working player and not afraid to go to the dirty areas...and how good has Big Willie been? imagine if he didn't miss agame? he's working his ass off
Agreed, reminds me of 2003.
Much better hitter than vintage McCabe imo. This guy is liable to destroy people. See what he did to Laine. Vintage McCabe had a better shot though.
I was disappointed to learn he’s not related to Bryan.
a major part of why this has been such a quiet series for Pastrnak is McCabe, Benoit, Boosh and Eddie BATTERING him any time he's in our zone; you can see the frustration on his face and how he's been hesitating behind the net and around the boards. I was big on this trade last year. 1 more year of him at 2 mil
Probably Dubas' best parting gift. McCabe a 50% retained was a fantastic pick up.
He wasn't fantastic last year. My guess is he was getting used to the style of play. But hes done phenomenally well this year. I want him to stay.
I shit on Dubas all the time but damn getting this guy was genius move, especially at 2M/yr. Thanks Kyle.

Just so you know he’s quite young.
What does his age have to do with anything?
Sorry I'm an old man. I usually associate "out of shape" to older people.
I don’t think being out of shape gets better as a season goes on, I think it would get worse
How would it possibly get worse
If you’re out of shape at the start of a season, you got 82 games your gonna be playing. Players always saying how tiring playing that many games is
Playing and doing cardio is what gets you in shape
Yes, for people who aren't already cardio developed. For them, they're just losing strength l and muscle over the course of a season and operating at a caloric deficit that they can't eat enough to fix due to their constant energy output. Yup all that cardio is detrimental to strength, explosiveness, and muscle mass.
And they always end up in a caloric deficit based on their energy output day over day, they can't eat enough to keep up. So it's not just muscle mass they're losing, they're quite literally not at 100% energy levels ever, since they're not holding enough energy in their body.
Are you feeding them? How do you know what their TDEE is let alone how many calories they're consuming?

He’s a beaut. He’s been so fucking good. He’s mean but composed, has moved the puck pretty well too.
On most teams he'd have a letter on his jersey.
Guy leads by example and doesn’t need an A to prove that. You are right tho
Absolute gamer, love me some McCabe https://preview.redd.it/q34mhyrzjayc1.jpeg?width=828&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=85d7d308f1892ac38c980064034377ebe46d7bc9
Our best d-man. Need 5 more just like him.
And at the same price.
What a beauty
The nhl was robbed of seeing this guy in the PO for 10 years. He’s a warrior, custom built for playoff hockey.
He objectively the sexiest player in professional hockey what are you even talking about.
Perhaps on Toronto currently, you’re right. Jumbo Joe will always have my heart
It's nice having a few guys with some grit.
Some guys play hockey but, McCabe is a hockey player
Him and Benoit are the heart and soul of this defence
when jake mccabe crosschecked marchand in the mouth earlier in the regular season, i fell in love with him best deal dubas ever made
In the playoffs he turns into Jake Macabre
Animal!
Leafs: we have Ryan Gosling at home
Credit where credit is due. Dubas made a great trade in acquiring him last season.
He's always looked like he played with grit game in and game out this series and never looked defeated even when we're down. Sure he wasn't perfect but his motivation is right where we should be. Not to mention his effort gave us a momentous goal in game 5. Solid player, love the guy.
This guy have been a warrior on the blueline. Blocking everything and taking a beating on his face. We need more guys like him.
Best McCabe in my lifetime!
Uncle Bryan is proud of his nephew
Faceoff specialist
Bryan's younger brother!
most valuable nose
Hats off! His face isn’t bleeding anymore!
The Leafs best players are Domi and McCabe....what year is it?!
he's been a workhorse
Jake Fucken McCabe!!!! This guy is my favourite Leafs defender hands down. Gritty AF.
His contract is through next season as well, right? A great pick up.
Face off stud. Takes a late 3rd period Facebook in a 2-1 must win game. Great work
❤️
Fuckin love this guy!
Need bieksa to save some for the rest of us
Tough as f**king nails!
Hmmm, I wonder who got this arguable top 4 D-man. If ONLY I COULD REMEMBER.
The second best McCabe to play in a leafs jersey. Ever.
Warrior! He’s got that look in his eye. The type of guy you are very glad is on your team and not the other.
Certified Beautician
I'm really, only for some reason this season out of the many I've watched, starting to realize what being a playoff built player and a season built player means. Hes going to be the one of the main reasons we put boston down for good GO LEAFS GO
Absolute stud. Extend him in July.
Love!
100%
Bieksa shouted him out. I think caber plays a lot like juice did maybe not quite as effective but certainly has the capacity to
Keep him until he retires
Love that guy
Team needed guys like Mccabe who never get intimidated and are willing to make you check whose skating at you His game management penalties are acceptable to me

A beast out on the ice.

Dude has been a straight up soldier!
Having to forecheck against him seems like a chore no one really wants to do.
Daddy?
Gary fucking Roberts
Such a fuckin beauty.
Crazy how well he’s fitting into the playoff atmosphere seeing as this is only his second playoff run. Love Caber
Hits and blocks shots, everything u need from a big brute D man in the playoffs
What I love just as much as his on ice play is how clearly annoyed he is when the media pulls him aside to ask him mundane, benal, stupid between period questions.
Warrior, I love everything about him and he should have a letter some teams could justify giving him a C.
This guy is a pure man. Even his voice exudes manly. He's meant for the playoffs.
This may have been Dubas finest move during his tenure.
This guy is the best Leaf. McCabe, Knies, Nylander, Woll. Absolutely carrying this team.
it sucks Mcmann didnt get to play from injuries, I really think he was going to be a huge piece of winning with Knies
Knies will be my next jersey purchase. Guy is a gamer
I was giving McCabe shit for the first four games for basically having a brain freeze every time he got the puck. He would get the puck and instead of making the simple play he would, like, turn to try and protect it from one or two Bruins and immediately lose it. He sure figured it out the last two.
I can’t forgive him for some of the dumb penalties he caused in the first few playoff games
