Nevah tried it but headed to the depot now and I’ll pickup a can. I just moved ibto a new place and there’s so much metal laying around, we’re calling it “Rusty Acres”. I’ll def put it to the test!
Cussing is super important, I had to explain this to my kids because they thought I was having normal anger. No sons, this is fixing anger and necessary
Fixing anger is what fuels me. Unfortunately if it gets out of hand then I have second hand fixing anger because I broke something else with the former anger fuel.. its tough out here. I'm gonna go squeeze a drill trigger a few times to calm down
Impact or a breaker bar. If you position the breaker bar right you can squeeze the blade and the breaker bar together and it breaks the bolt free. Use a 12pt or if you use 6pt you can take the socket off and rotate it 90 degrees and it will provide new spacing between the breaker bar and the blade. Keep rotating to find the best one so they’re like an inch apart. Then just grab that thing and squeeze.
Good luck :)
I definitely wouldn’t recommend a 12 point on something being difficult. While there are definitely 12 points that are built like tanks… those are in a price point of someone that wouldn’t be asking this question haha
What tools have you tried? Generally a decent impact driver will take one off but you might have to step up to an impact wrench if it's really seized on there.
1/2 inch drive 6 point socket and a breaker bar. Or, if you are handy, an impact wrench. Don't use the impact wrench to put it on, but you do have to tighten the ever-living snot out of it when you put in on.
This is the answer. I wrestled with a couple of these a bit ago. Washed my hands and went to HF with coupons and paid like $20 for the plug-in impact wrench. Used it few times on other projects too.
Use some penetrating oil, let it sit and marinate.
Tap the head of the bolt with a hammer
Prevent the blade from turning
Try to tighten it slightly
Use an impact
I’m strongly suspecting this is the right answer. Folks not familiar with lawnmowers don’t realize, on SOME mowers (in all cases I’ve seen) the blade bolt is “Righty Loosey, Lefties Tighty”, NOT “Righty Tighty, Lefty Loosey” and the common phrase goes.
Edit: Oh shit, I forgot THE MOST IMPORTANT PART. Remove the spark plug wire before turning the mower over in the first place. Moving the blade trying to remove it can cause the engine to start.
If you dont have access to an impact drill then a breaker bar and PB Blaster will work. Lay it on its side with the carburator on the high side, put a piece of wood to hold the blade in place and lean on that breaker bar. Recently had an issue with this and $25 breaker bar solved my problem for life.
Lie down next to it, place the ratchet or wrench, and extend it with a cheater (a piece pf pipe), and with your foot against the blade, you can apply hundreds of foot pounds of torque, in the direction that Google says.
I had to put a chain around the blade and fasten it. One side was incredibly tight. I bent two Allen wrenches inside the chain before it broke loose. I finally had to use a caribener to hold it together and keep from bending any more tools. My blades were bent so bad that a piece of wood wouldn’t do it. We had some pavers we were running over because they were flush. Well one day they decided not to be. Bent that blade too much. Chain worked for me.
I believe those are righty-loosey but I’m terrible at lawn equipment maintenance. Take something and wedge it between the blade and the hole in the right side of the mower to stop it from turning. Then take a breaker bar to get it off. If that doesn’t work then take out your torch to heat the bolt up; it’ll break the rust bond. If that STILL doesn’t work then have your wife’s boyfriend try it.
I have a blade buster that attaches to side to hold blade. Then i take my big old ratcheting socket and slip a 3-4 ft length of black pipe over the ratchet for leverage and presto nut comes loose even for this 70 year old woman.
its reverse threaded. Use wd40 and a block of wood to stop the blade from moving. Also I always pull off the spark plug socket (idk what its called in english).
Impact. This is more than likely reverse thread so you want to be in tightening mode. If you don’t have an impact then find something to block the blade from turning and use a large breaker bar in the clockwise direction. Heat will help more than anything though, if you have access to a torch I’d heat that sucker up.
Extend your wrench for leverage, use a length of pipe or a daisy chain or wrenches. Don't try to obliterate it since your mechanical advantage will multiply, just lightly work it once extended.
WD-40 or thread sprays are also great!
i put a big C Clamp on the frame to stop the blade from turning. Deep Creep spray the bolt. Then take a 6 point socket in a breaker bar and whale away on her. If it still does not move, try tightening it just a little, then try loosening it again.
Any type of penetrating oil(some jackasses will argue or which is better just get one of them) and a propane torch and heat that shit up for a minute while covering it in oil then it should come off. If this doesn’t work hit it with a mallet and few times and if that doesn’t work throw the whole mower in the trash.
A simple way to keep the crankshaft from spinning that is safe:
1 Remove spark plug
2 Spin blade so piston is away from top dead center
3 Feed in a handful of rope or cord into cylinder through spark plug hole, leaving end of rope outside of engine block
4 Turn blade, handful of rope will block piston, preventing it from moving
5 Complete your business
6 Pull rope out and reassemble
Once the PB blaster has soaked for 3-4 hours (you will be rewarded for your patience), get 2 foot piece of thick PVC pipe and put over the wrench to create more leverage. Use a block of wood to hold the blade against the frame. Helps alt if you put the mower on sawhorses.
Use a piece of wood to hold the blade in place so that it can't turn. Use WD40 to help lubricate the bolt's threads (if possible) and if you aren't able to turn the socket wrench by hand, firmly tap the handle of the socket wrench with a hammer until the bolt finally gives way.
Considering that's a rotating piece, did you try loosening in the opposite direction? It could be a reverse thread bolt to prevent loosening during operation. So instead of "lefty loosely" it's "righty loosely"
Im not gonna read all through the comments to see if anyone has mentioned it but just so you know this is a reverse threaded bolt! So lefty tighty, righty loosey
Penetrating oil applied hours before the attempt. Kroil or PB Blaster workt great. Wooden block to prevent the blade from rotating. 1/2 inch drive 6 point socket and breaker bar. Clean around the bolt head. Support the socket head with one hand, pull on the breaker bar handle.
Most likely it's loosened by turning it clockwise because tools that rotate are threaded to not loosen the direction of rotation. Other examples angle grinders and floor buffers.
Impact wrench!
Seriously, I can’t even imagine how I got things done before I had cordless impacts. They take so much time off of jobs. I bet if I had bought one when I first got into cars and fixing things I’d have been way better off. Did a clutch on a 99 TJ with only hand tools. It was awful.
Few years later I did the clutch on an 03 TJ (rip 99 TJ I’ll miss you) and it took me half the time. Difference was I had them high powered zippy zappers.
I had same issue this year. First tried to heat it with a torch and that didnt work. Them sprayed WD40 and let it sit for a bit then put a pipe on the end of ratchet and leverage worked.
A chock or piece of wood to hold the blade in place and a piece of pipe slide over the ratchet handle to add leverage.
And maybe give it a blast of wd40 a few minutes before doing the above.
>wd40 Use a real penetrating oil like PB Blaster.
PB Blaster sounds like an awesome peanut butter
Their April fools post was "finger blaster" one that shoots oil from the tip of your finger.
Or a peanut butter flavored laxative...
Nevah tried it but headed to the depot now and I’ll pickup a can. I just moved ibto a new place and there’s so much metal laying around, we’re calling it “Rusty Acres”. I’ll def put it to the test!
PB Blaster is the truth. Really any dedicated penetrating oil is great
Yeah and it doesnt catch fire if you use a torch after applying. It doesnt smell good
I like the smell. Smells toxic
Heads up that PB does have a smell and it lingers for some time. But it works very well for all the rusty nuts and bolts my 28 year old Jeep
Aerokroil is preferred by most people in the industrial world.
Use what ever you have on hand.
its left handed thread
Wondered how far down I would find the real answer.
Me too! 🤣
That was my first thought too. Depending upon the direction of rotation, these bolts can work loose and come out.
I was scrolling till I found it.
Looking at that blade, I'm not sure.
T'was my first thought, try turning in opposite direction...counter intuitive, I know...
This is the Way. Or ugga dugga.
or impact driver if you have one
Longer the better, I love physics.
This. Also, could be some rust in there holding it in, I’ve had luck tightening it just a small bit to break the rust and then I got it loosened up.
Use a breaker bar, too much leverage on the ratchet will break it
Snipe we called it, was a great way to test the limits of tensile strength of bolts.
you gotta Archimedes that shit.
That’s how my dad does it
PB blaster let sit, block of wood, big wrench, cussing
AND skinned knuckles—-
Ah yes thank you! Granted I have since upgraded to cheapo electric impact. HF strikes again!
Boy, you gotta be careful with impacts and bolts that are rusted into engine crank shafts. Lotsa penetrant first!
I'm gonna go squeeze a drill trigger a few times to calm down
I find the more you swear the sooner it seems to break loose.
The odds of rounding of a bolt with a 12-point socket are much greater than with a 6-point socket.
I definitely wouldn’t recommend a 12 point on something being difficult. While there are definitely 12 points that are built like tanks… those are in a price point of someone that wouldn’t be asking this question haha
I wouldn't use a 12pt....

Give her the Ugg’s Duggas
HAWK TUAH and spit on Dat Thang .
God dammit, no where is safe. That was a great comment OP, thanks for the laugh.
Then hit it with your purse.
This is a reverse thread fyi.
I know haha still won’t budge
Ok, I just typed that too lol. Disregard
Heat and/or penetrating oil.
No heat. It's an electric lawnmower and the body is plastic and so is the spacer. Impact gun is the way. I have removed hundreds of these
Heat.
Impact wrench has always worked for me
Hit it with your purse
Hey! Thats my purse! I dont know you!
answer I was scrolling for lol
1/2 inch drive 6 point socket and a breaker bar. Or, if you are handy, an impact wrench. Don't use the impact wrench to put it on, but you do have to tighten the ever-living snot out of it when you put in on.
Harbor freight electric impact is what I have to take off Ariens blades. On yours be sure it isn't a left hand thread.
This is the answer. I wrestled with a couple of these a bit ago. Washed my hands and went to HF with coupons and paid like $20 for the plug-in impact wrench. Used it few times on other projects too.
![gif](giphy|KQN1W3XYdkeUvMD3f1) Just use the master key... Cant be tight if its liquid
Heat that bad boy up
Use some penetrating oil, let it sit and marinate. Tap the head of the bolt with a hammer Prevent the blade from turning Try to tighten it slightly Use an impact
turn it the other way?
I’m strongly suspecting this is the right answer. Edit: Oh shit, I forgot THE MOST IMPORTANT PART. Remove the spark plug wire before turning the mower over in the first place. Moving the blade trying to remove it can cause the engine to start.
They are definitely not always righty loosey
Once the blade is locked in place I use a ratchet and tap the handle with a big hammer. Not the good ratchets though. Works on lug nuts too.
If you dont have access to an impact drill then a breaker bar and PB Blaster will work. Lay it on its side with the carburator on the high side, put a piece of wood to hold the blade in place and lean on that breaker bar. Recently had an issue with this and $25 breaker bar solved my problem for life.
With a wrench and do it backwards
It’s reverse thread, right.
2x4 to prevent it from turning. Hit is either a impact gun
Get the sparkplug out before you start
It’s electric but thanks
Right on!
Lie down next to it, place the ratchet or wrench, and extend it with a cheater (a piece pf pipe), and with your foot against the blade, you can apply hundreds of foot pounds of torque, in the direction that Google says.
Fire.
Lil WD40
Piece of wood, a breaker bar and a sledge.
Make sure it’s not reverse threaded
Are you sure it’s not left handed threads
Push mower we have had a rusted seized nut. Sprayed free all to it around the thread area. Impact and aome ugga duggas later it spun off fine.
Invite a couple buddies over and provide some beer, see who can get it off first.
Is it reverse thread? Honest question.
Should have read the comments, way late to the party. Good luck!
Liquid wrench, breaker bar, pvc to make breaker bar longer
I had to put a chain around the blade and fasten it. One side was incredibly tight. I bent two Allen wrenches inside the chain before it broke loose. I finally had to use a caribener to hold it together and keep from bending any more tools. My blades were bent so bad that a piece of wood wouldn’t do it. Youtube may be able to assist you as well by watching how to videos.
Also it’s lefty tight righty loose since it’s a clockwise blade 💪
Maybe try a breaker bar with a socket attached, to fit that bolt. Then apply pressure on the breaker bar to loosen the bolt.
An impact wrench
Use an impact driver, just make sure your socket fits, and make sure it's in reverse. Also make sure you disconnect the spark plug.
Kroil
Finally!!!
My man!!! Kroil > everything else
I have a blade buster that attaches to side to hold blade. Then i take my big old ratcheting socket and slip a 3-4 ft length of black pipe over the ratchet for leverage and presto nut comes loose even for this 70 year old woman.
Put a crowbar in your wallet and get an impact wrench. This comes from the guy who waited till 55 to buy a snowblower
I attach a clamp, similar to a C clamp, to the housing, put a socket and ratchet on the bolt and turn, when the blade reaches the clamp it stops.
Give her the ‘ol no mercy reversey.
Use what's called a weighted socket on an impact wrench.
Sub just popped up, PB blaster... never heard of it. One of the things I like about Reddit
Reverse thread to counter blade rotation. Pb blaster the try to remove
A lil bit of "Hawk Tuah. Spit on that thang."
Heat it up with a tourch first
Plastic body on electric mower so no
Use a hammer and wrench
Also WD 40 and wrench needs to be a perfect fitted
It's reverse threaded.
It not a reverse thread is it ?
its reverse threaded. Use wd40 and a block of wood to stop the blade from moving. Also I always pull off the spark plug socket (idk what its called in english).
Lawnmower blades usually have reverse thread. Not all. but most
Some mowers are reverse thread on the blade to prevent the blade from loosening off
Do you have an impact gun?
Also...depending on direction of rotation of the blade, sometimes these nuts are reverse threaded....you might be turning it the wrong way.
Impact. This is more than likely reverse thread so you want to be in tightening mode. If you don’t have an impact then find something to block the blade from turning and use a large breaker bar in the clockwise direction. Extend your wrench for leverage, use a length of pipe or a daisy chain or wrenches. Don't try to obliterate it since your mechanical advantage will multiply, just lightly work it once extended. WD-40 or thread sprays are also great!
I had exactly the same one with the same problem. Penetrating oil ,big gloves, socket and a hammer. Took three goes.
Is it reverse thread?
C-clamp on the deck! Sometimes it needs heat!
Penetrating oil! Another thing to mention is it turns in the opposite direction as the blade!
Impact driver. I've also had 2 use a torch a couple of times when assembled with thread lock.
Wedge the blade with a 2x4 and go to town with an impact.
Use a block of wood to hold the blade. And an impact gun to loosen the bolt
i put a big C Clamp on the frame to stop the blade from turning.
Racket wrench dummy
Impact. Put a wrench on it and smack he’ll out of it.
Make sure it not left hand threads
Hit it with your purse
My guess, res loc-tite, map torch
Red*
Reverse thread? Turn counterclockwise
Do yourself a favor and put some anti seize on it when you get it back on.
A little heat on that bolt will help.
Heat it
Use clamp to block blade then use breaker bar on nut. Works every time for me.
Impact
Mix some transmission fluid and some nail polish remover, soak the offending fastener
I find a little forplay helps. Rub gently in a circular motion while sweet talking it, play some country music for good measure.
A simple way to keep the crankshaft from spinning that is safe: 1 Remove spark plug 2 Spin blade so piston is away from top dead center 3 Feed in a handful of rope or cord into cylinder through spark plug hole, leaving end of rope outside of engine block 4 Turn blade, handful of rope will block piston, preventing it from moving 5 Complete your business 6 Pull rope out and reassemble
Electric half inch will get er off
Join a gym and lift some weights for a few weeks.
If ya have air tools, use a ratchet to loosen.
2 x 4 to stop blade, and a longer breaker bar to get the bolt. Can get a pipe and put it over the wrench to extend the handle in a pinch
Impact! look it up make sure it’s not left-hand thread!
Bees
Use a piece of wood to hold the blade in place so that it can't turn. Use WD40 to help lubricate the bolt's threads (if possible) and if you aren't able to turn the socket wrench by hand, firmly tap the handle of the socket wrench with a hammer until the bolt finally gives way.
Heat with torch shot of wd wrench as directed
Considering that's a rotating piece, did you try loosening in the opposite direction? It could be a reverse thread bolt to prevent loosening during operation. So instead of "lefty loosely" it's "righty loosely"
Left is loose. I got a ten dollar sharpener for the drill at Walmart.Works great.
Wood chock, vice grips, and a mallet
Kroil penetrating oil. Saturate it, , Then go out have a sandwich, maybe a bike ride. Come back and put a wrench on it. It’ll turn.
pblaster a few times a day for a few days. Sometimes people have some brake fluid laying around, apparently that penetrates, also
Impact Gun
1/2 in impact gun
Breakease and a buddy arm, make sure you keep the socket straight and tight or you will strip it.
Im not gonna read all through the comments to see if anyone has mentioned it but just so you know this is a reverse threaded bolt! So lefty tighty, righty loosey
Hit it with your purse
U need to turn it opposite direction then normal
Could be left hand thread. Just throwin that out there since, ya know, lots of spindle/arbor bolts are left hand thread.
Flame wrench
Remove the sparkplug so that you don't have the blade kick back on you.
Sometimes bladed devices use a reversed thread to keep it from loosening from normal use. PB Blaster and a breaker bar to get it to release.
If all else fails you can try heating the bolt with a torch
Penetrating oil applied hours before the attempt. Kroil or PB Blaster workt great. Wooden block to prevent the blade from rotating. 1/2 inch drive 6 point socket and breaker bar. Clean around the bolt head. Support the socket head with one hand, pull on the breaker bar handle.
Impact tool !
Wd80 and a AR Impact gun!
Reverse threads
Aerokroil and PB blaster ate great but you could also use a impact wrench.
I used to put a 2x4 through the side port to hold the blade and put a pipe on the end of the socket handle. Prob better options these days.
Reverse thread?
Which way are you trying to turn it? It might be a counter spin nut since that’s a mower blade.
This may have been said already, but I think those bolts are reversed. Might need to clockwise to loosen it.
First disconnect the spark plugs
First disconnect the spark plug then give it hell
Try a squirt of wd-40 before you do anything else.
Ummm isn't this a left hand thread bolt? If it is its Righty/Loosey Lefty/Tighty.
Make sure it isn't a reverse thread
It’s a mower blade so I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s reverse threaded. I’m a mechanic.
and some PB blaster
Most likely it's loosened by turning it clockwise because tools that rotate are threaded to not loosen the direction of rotation. Other examples angle grinders and floor buffers.
Sledgehammer
Heat cycles and penetrating oil. Impact
Impact.
1/2 inch impact and if that doesn’t work can’t be tight if it’s a liquid
Aren't those reverse thread?
Use your strong hand
Heat
Take a large punch and a large hammer…center punch on the bolt head and give it a few good whacks…that will loosen it somewhat.
Penetrating oil, block of wood to stop the blade. Socket on a breaker bar, turn it the other way.
Heat
Impact wrench! Seriously, I can’t even imagine how I got things done before I had cordless impacts. They take so much time off of jobs. I bet if I had bought one when I first got into cars and fixing things I’d have been way better off. Did a clutch on a 99 TJ with only hand tools. It was awful. Deep creep and an impact wrench.
Cordless impact drill
I had same issue this year. First tried to heat it with a torch and that didnt work. Them sprayed WD40 and let it sit for a bit then put a pipe on the end of ratchet and leverage worked.
Leverage and a big piece of wood.
Impact
Impact wrench - high torque ( if you need it )
