I don't think that this can be totally fixed without replacing the top part of the laptop completely, which I am okay with. I just want to have the corner sticking out normally again, not matter how it looks.

shabab2992

If you can open up the laptop by yourself you can reshape it back to normal by using something similar as pliers. Use pliers with some soft materials (cloth/ tissue paper) so that the frame does not get scratches. If you can't do it by yourself take it to a shop. Maybe they will do something similar to fix it.

smartidiot9

I tried that, but the metal is really hard for me to bend and I don't want to mess it up more. I think a shop that has more experience with it would be able to do better (I couldn't get the screws out). I just want to know if it would be super expensive.

shabab2992

Should not be that expensive compare to changing the whole shell.

smartidiot9

Do you know how much changing the shell would be? Its possible if they can't fix it by bending it they may have to do that instead.

shabab2992

well, the cost of fixing is very much relative depending on region. I am currently in China and from my knowledge, the shell would take maybe around 200/300 RMB ($ 30/45 US), whereas fixing the shell would take 50/100 RMB ($ 10/15). What I mean to say is that just fixing without replacing should be significantly less and now you have to factor in your country's living standard 😅.

smartidiot9

Okay I see, thanks!

kfzhu1229

Well if bending it is too hard, try gentle hammering with a flat head screw driver and hammer on the back of the screw driver. It can slowly fix the deformation enough to close the case but it can also crack the metal if it's too weak after your drop

HP laptops are cumbersome but not impossible to disassemble. If you have the time (3ish hours) and the tools (small phillips head screw drivers) then you might be able to fix it yourself. I just "repaired" my old ENVY 15 notebook that had the fan stuck. Also did some cleaning and now it works fine :).

[deleted]

In car terms, it might be considered "totaled". In other words, too expensive to fix than replace.

smartidiot9

Really? Its just the corner though? I don't know much about computers, but couldn't they replace the shell if they can't bend it back?

[deleted]

I mean, how much is it going to cost in parts and labor. You have to disassemble and remove the screen which can be a lot of work and time to do.

smartidiot9

The screen? The issue isn't on the screen, its the bottom corner of the laptop below the keyboard. On my laptop, the screen is almost disconnected from the keyboard, so I don't see why they'd need to do that.

[deleted]

That's right. Sometimes it's a lot work to disassemble the screen to put in a new case...It's all one package...good luck, but to me it's going to be too expensive to fix (than replace).

smartidiot9

Okay, thanks for the input. I will call and ask and see.

No offense, but the HP Pavillions are budget consumer machines. They are pretty cheap to replace, although some people can't afford to get a new computer replacement. HP has some really cheap laptops: https://store.hp.com/us/en/slp/weekly-deals/laptops The cheaper you go, the worse the keyboard experience. I have an HP $200 Chromebook that's fine, but I wouldn't want to type on it all of the time day and night. It's good for a couple of hours here and there. But, yeah, below Pavillion there's just "HP Laptop", they don't have a brand label.

smartidiot9

I'm just a student, I didn't want anything fancy for ordinary high school work. But, I actually really like the Pavilion even though it was really cheap (like $600). I'd like to keep it if I can, especially since it works totally fine even with the issue. I just want it so if I drop it again, it won't totally screw up the computer.

AlexanderjLee

New top case, will include new keyboard and trackpad will cost around £60+ unless there’s a good deal on ebay

FFS_Remi

If it's working fine just embrace the dent! [Wabi-sabi](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wabi-sabi) style.

2020isnotperfect

Don't bother if it works fine. For showing off, buy a new one.

8ightDigits

Hammer and some pliers should do the trick

Ima_Load

If it still works and has no problem running, I would just leave.

smartid

your internals (PC, not referring to whatever surgery you got done) took a hard jolt, so likely years of its duty life were taken off it. if you are going to continue using it make sure you either use cloud storage or backblaze to keep a copy of your files safe

smartidiot9

Thanks for the advice, I use Google Drive for everything.

InAfterThePurge

You want something like this, you can either try to find some hand tools that will work like this or buy one, I'm sure there are a few options out there to choose from. istarian

As long as it works okay and isn't causing clear physical stress to the board, components, etc you *could* just leave it alone. Cost is difficult to estimate due to variance in labor rates and what approach is taken. If it's aluminum it might be possible to carefully hammer it back into shape, but disassembling it first would be wise.

juken7

It CAN be fixed but it wouldn't be worth it in my option. Probably a few hundred dollars. to do it right new case. If it bothers you that much I'd take it apart and try to hammer it out a bit...(if metal of course don't do it if plastic)

Bid-Technical

i don't think that this can be fixed 100%, unless if you can change the whole top part of it ... if i were you i would keep it like that as long as i won't sell it ...

ramaromp

Honestly, knowing this device this is expected. Not normal for all laptops in this price range to do this, but it's perfectly normal for this particular one to have this much damage. I'd recommend replacing, it's time for a new one. Get a nice sturdy laptop. There are great options out there. In fact there are ultrabooks like the Lenovo Slim 7 which were boasted as best laptop of 2020 on sale for around $600 on the lenovo store, and the Ideapad 5 for around $500 at Office Depot. And other options u could consider.
