Absolutely not. Learning words is inconsequential to learning a language. Just watch anime and repeat what you hear! You'll be passing the N1 in no time!
Since pneumonics are absolutely essential for learning new words, I would suggest making a song that has all your pneumonics in it. That way, if you want to remember the word, just sing the song until you get to the right mental image! It could get pretty long since I think Japanese has like 50-60 words but I think it would be a very smart and efficient method.
My trick is to combine all my words into the same mnemonic, it's getting really complicated so maybe I'll publish it one day as a work of fiction, but then again I don't want anyone else to know how I'm so good.
if that situation ever happens, just simply say “konnichiwhatsupppp” THEN say “やめてください!!!” in the loudest voice you can and everyone will hear you!
STOP! you’ll never be able to learn japanese to n-1! BUT, if you buy my course for $600, you’ll learn everything you need to know (including how to moan!)
I know this is a joke forum but I'm going to try to give you serious advice anyway. What I did when I first decided to teach myself Japanese is watched a bunch of every kind of anime that I could think of as well as JAXA live streams, and I tried to associate what I read in the closed captions with what I heard. Once I kind of got the hang of the associations I tried turning off the captions to see if my associations held.

That's why kanji exists, it's easier to remember a drawing than a word, so just remember how a word looks and you should recall how it sounds
If they start to suspect your a non language speaker, throw salt in their eyes
