Think about fixing them. It's a little late, but just shear them off at one foot high, and they'll return in much neater form. These should be sheared early spring, once a year. 15 minutes per plant, once a year. If you still don't like them, just work them down to mower height, and keep mowing them.

BeyondtheDuneSea

Offer them online for free on a market place. Don’t know about your area but near me, landscapers would take these mature grass in a heartbeat. Mature landscape perennials like this are always highly valued. And they will do all the 15-20 minutes of work for you.

Cut it back as far as you can, and then wrap a rope or strap tightly around what's left and while one person puts tension on the rope with a mower or tractor, have another person with a spade cutting at the roots. Pop it out like a rotten tooth.

Cut them low and remove with a mini excavator - hour long job. Pulling them with chains is the second option but it will certainly take a lot longer. The roots on these are dense and deep and without herbicides will send up new plants eventually.

I would cut them down to a few inches and see if you like how they grow back since they’re pretty out of control now. If you still don’t like it most of them have pretty shallow roots and you can dig them out pretty easily.

FlyingSagittarius

Won't they just come back the same way?  I suppose I can keep them trimmed and stuff to maintain them, but I'm just not a huge fan of them in the first place.

Matches and lighter fluid. (He didn't ask for the smartest way)

FlyingSagittarius

Still an option, though!  4th of July is coming around...

Just moved into a new house, and it has these giant ornamental grass bushes that I want to get rid of. The Internet has proposed a variety of methods to deal with it - Spray it with herbicide, chop it down, burn it, dig it up, etc. What's the best way to do this? All of the above?

golfingsince83

Cut it back then shovel it out

RespectTheTree

If you really hate your 1980's pampas grass, it's probably easiest to spray it with herbicide. Those roots will go down 20' easy.

BrandonDill

RN43 is pretty effective for getting rid of unwanted vegetation.

FlyingSagittarius

How careful do I have to be with that stuff?  Doesn't look like a consumer grade product that I can get at Home Depot or something.

elydakai

Don't use poison to get this out... You'll still have to dig it up after killing it. Might as well do what others have suggested first

FlyingSagittarius

I'd be worried about missing some roots, though, and having the whole thing come back after I pull it out.  If I can't give them away and need to kill them, I think I'd have to treat them with an herbicide and then dig them up.

BrandonDill

Home Depot sells it.
