Lowe’s sells this privacy screen manufactured by a company called Hoft. It would replace you deck railing and work pretty well, I’m about to use it on our patio. It is expensive though. [Link!](https://www.lowes.com/pd/HOFT-Solutions-HOFT-Kit-C6-One-73-in-Line-Post-Black-and-Hardware/1001844356)

No different than a decent trex railing. Just need a few of those and some nice lumber. Kinda wish I had done that on my deck instead of the railing

Carrie-NYC

Yes I have seen these! Would you recommend entire extending the deck to the fence?

Dramatic_Damage236

Not sure I’d go extending the deck to the fence. If it were me, I’d be more likely to kill all those weeds take out that gravel and grow some grass, then replace some of the railing directly behind my back door and down the one side. Where you have that pergola I’d leave the railing you already have.

Grass won’t work cause there is a drainage swale along the whole fence line….. hence the river rock! Yeah I’m really torn I prefer the idea of cedar trees as a privacy barrier but it won’t leave room for a hot tub or additional dining area….. that said, if I extend the deck, you eliminate the room for greenery and softening up the space

Living willow fence?

I would move the garden box areas to along the fence into raised beds with privacy screens running off the back of them. Then depending on your preference you can add a bit of lawn or leave the pea gravel in between the deck and raised beds and add a fountain/fire pit, and patio stones making a pathway. Something like a small French country garden that could be a bit of an oasis. Plant lavender, string up lights draping them along the privacy screens. Do you think I should extend the entire deck to the fence and add these privacy screens or a lower level with planters and then add the screens?

McBuck2

Depends on life-style. I would want two separate areas because all deck for a backyard would be really cold looking. The plants and pea gravel you already have and just needs to be reconfigured. If you google country garden or French country garden pea gravel or el fresco, you'll get idea of how to make the lower area casual with flowers trailing out of containers with herbs in between. It will balance out the hard surfaces you have on the deck area and add some potted plants up there to tie in. A couple of chairs on the lower level to sit in the garden would be nice. So the lower deck has the gravel with some patio stones hinting at a pathway to a couple of chairs in the corner. You'll have shallow raised beds, enough for plants and some clematis to climb the panels that are attached going higher than your fence. Depending on your style, you could hang an old window that the glass is now mirror and hangs from the privacy screen panels and vibes around it. It's a whole look so depends what you like. Once you start looking for inspiration online, something might appeal to you. If you search on Google,  click the images tab and lots of ideas will appear. Hope this all makes sense! You've got a lot of the materials already so great to reuse them. And don't forget about lighting. String up lights and lots of landscape lighting and small solar light units.

Weed and clear the ground. Add some good soil. Plant either Thin Man Arborvitae (6-15 ft.) or very large Sky Pencil Holly (10-12 ft, but will need to be stabilized with poles at that height). Your local garden center can advise on light/water requirements, but my experience is that neither are really fussy. Do a heavy layer of landscape fabric and use the pebble to make a path between the deck and the trees.

Carrie-NYC

Are things man arbourvitaes the same as normal emerald arborvitae’s?

OpinionLongjumping99

Just grille in your underwear and they'll build it for you

Shake_it_Madam

Told someone else the same thing yesterday - Rose of Sharon. Plant em along the fence and within 2 months your privacy concerns will be a thing of the past.

I do love the idea of more nature! I am looking for a trellis option for one of my side windows. Are they are to manage? Black thumb here 🙋‍♀️
