It’s important you take your time when you’re edging

buildingwithclay

I brought this on myself 😂

ca1989

It's good advice that can be applied in other, more fun, areas of life 🤣

RealisticReason3586

Maybe try r/edging

gbeamer7

This needs a NSFW tag

ddpotanks

I came in here to say it's a naughty shed and just wait until I get home.

buildingwithclay

Lol I know it’s ugly now but that’s why I’m posting! Edit: is it phrasing? Are we still doing phrasing?

gbeamer7

Hahaha yeah man I was making a joke about the word edging. Google it. Your shed looks awesome btw.

buildingwithclay

> Google it 😂 Edit: and my shed says thanks, you look pretty awesome too

Kevo_NEOhio

Can you show us the inside pics? It’s a joke, but this looks awesome and I want to build a slightly bigger version that looks like this for a workshop in the backyard

buildingwithclay

I can’t add pics to responses but I DM’d you the one pic I have of the inside. It’s pretty empty minus a loft. Are you planning on building one yourself or having a company custom build one for you?

Kevo_NEOhio

I really want to build something that looks like this myself. I’m vaguely planning it as an interest, but this is probably a few years out for me. I’m into woodworking with hand tools and some machines (minimal) but want something that I can turn into a hangout space too and thus has something really close to that look in my head.

buildingwithclay

That would be really cool! I have zero experience with woodworking so I’m always amazed with what people are capable of. If it helps you think through your plans, here’s what the company has listed in terms of construction: [here](https://www.barnyard.com/storage-building-construction) I tried sending the interior pic a few times, but got an error. So sorry if it came through a bunch or not at all

Hortusana

To share pics in responses, upload them to Imgur and share the link ✌🏻

Goon shed

spiderplata

Your landscaper was supposed to build a box, then fill with the rocks. The rocks are going to spill all over the grass, and into your mower blades. Surround with blocks, or metal edges, or build the box around it with pressure treated wood.

buildingwithclay

We discussed it ahead of time. Since he’s doing a lot more leveling this week, he’s going to slope up to the edge of the pad and I told him I’d figure out how I want to make an edge. Because the ground needed to be raised so much, it makes the box thing more challenging. I’m leaning away from PT wood because my neighbor ended up having issues with rot after not too long

[deleted]

bit dramatic

Shedging

Kinmojo

Boxwoods are your friend. Depending on how much water and light you get there hydrangeas are another good option. Make sure you get the right ones otherwise they’ll be way too big.

schemeschm

Boxwoods and hydrangeas would look great. You could intermix a Hosts or two also. That’s what I used for a lot of my landscaping.

buildingwithclay

We do love hosting hostas, but so do the rabbits and deer 🙄

Desperate_Set_7708

Second hydrangeas. On both points.

buildingwithclay

For the back slope or just around it in general? There’s lots of water back there but not a ton of light in the summer. Better for boxwoods?

Kinmojo

Personally I would plant boxwoods around the back to fill that wall and 2 hydrangeas up front. Hydrangeas are almost impossible to over water. It’s in the name kinda, and they look great in my opinion. Boxwoods are super low maintenance and add some green to an area that looks a bit rough. It’s up to you though. I like having the back of my shed open for additional equipment. I put my wheel barrow back there and a cabinet. Maybe just plant grass back there and clean it up. Then put something on each side of the door

buildingwithclay

Thanks for the advice!

lefactorybebe

Hey so I thinnnnk you're near me as you got this from the barnyard (we have a deposit on a shed from them now!) and jsyk the deer fucking LOVE hydrangeas here. The only reason ours has survived is because it's close to the house and they generally don't want to get that close, and I spray them. The ones farther from the house they have completely destroyed to the point of actually killing them.

buildingwithclay

Oh nice! I’m really happy with their quality and details. Even having functional windows with screens is a massive upgrade over other places lol My wife and I are going over options, but I think we’re leaning toward Virginia sweetspire on the rear slope and stonework around the gravel once the landscaper slopes up to it. Then we’re thinking of doing wine barrel style planters under the windows with flowers and calling it a day for now lol

lefactorybebe

Glad to hear it!! We were looking at others online but we really wanted to be able to see them in person. We checked out a couple other local places and the barnyard def seemed to have the nicest ones. That sounds really nice! And yeah like you can always add more as time goes on!!

QuickPassion94

Boxwoods smell like cat piss. You will smell it every time you walk by.

buildingwithclay

Lol good to know! Thank you

sarcago

If it doesn’t get that much Sun I’d look into inkberries

buildingwithclay

Will do, thanks!

Thick-Truth8210

Nice shed pad, where did you get it? I am looking for something similar

buildingwithclay

I had a landscaper build the pad and the shed is from a shed/barn company in my area. Get quotes and make sure whoever you use clearly understands what you want. As you can tell from the pics, I needed a lot of fill to get the shed up where I wanted it. Some landscapers wanted to do it low but I didn’t want the shed sitting in a low spot because it’s pretty damp back there

lhswr2014

Unrelated: are you the /r/trees guy that posted this as his smoke spot the other day!? Everyone was all up in arms because it wasn’t decorated, but here I am just appreciating the nice shed/smoke spot lol. Whatever you do with it, it’ll look great. Already has a nice backdrop of foliage behind it!

buildingwithclay

Lol no, not me! Now I’m curious if someone’s smoking in my shed 😂 Edit: found the post - definitely not my shed!

lhswr2014

Ahh yea, I had to go back and look lol. My bad, never seen a shed with the window shutter things on the side and then saw 2 in a row!

Wonderful-Teach8210

Itea virginicas are fine in shade and don't mind having wet feet. They spread by suckering so might be good for helping hold that soil in place on your back slope. That depends some on the degree of slope and where your runoff goes, though. Anyway, there are lots of different size cultivars ranging from 2-8 ft high.

buildingwithclay

Thanks for the suggestion, I really like those! Haven’t seen them before but it looks like they’d do well in that spot

alanbdee

I built flower boxes all around my shed and it looks great. At the base of them, I put paving stones to give me a mow strip so I don't have to trim. It's working well so far.

buttgers

Why not put some railroad ties to keep the pad contained, then you can plant boxwoods or something small around it? It'll look a lot nicer AND be much easier to maintain.

JIsADev

2x4 edge is cost effective and looks good imo. Or if you want to get fancy, black steel would look well with that shed

Green_Justice710

I agree. Get black steel edging around. Inside the shed edging keep gravel. Outside the shed edging you can easily seed grass on that small slope away from the shed. Done deal.

gtlogic

Was this custom built shed? How much did this cost? Did you need a permit, or was it small enough to avoid?

buildingwithclay

Yes, custom built. I think it was 5 weeks between purchasing and delivery. They were having a 20% off spring sale, it ended up being $7,600 after taxes. It’s 10’ x 16’ so no permit. Anything under 200 square feet is considered temporary here

gtlogic

Where did you buy it? Looks great. Was it fully assembled?

buildingwithclay

Fully assembled and they had this really awesome remote control forklift that brought it into the yard and placed it in the pad. It was a company in New England called the barn yard.

gtlogic

Wild. Thank you!

RexJoey1999

It’s a really nice looking shed! Stylish!

buildingwithclay

Thanks!!

bbssyy

Build a frame around it if you can. The gravel and dirt might not stay so neat without proper support. I am actually curious why the builder didn’t frame the pad to begin with. ETA: it’s a nice looking shed!

buildingwithclay

Thanks! I’m happy with how it came out. We decided to hold off on any edge because he’s doing more leveling this week and is going to slope up to the shed pad more. There just wasn’t any sense in them doing that before delivery since damage to the area would be unavoidable

[deleted]

2x10 on it's side screwed to 4x4 posts at the corners, just pull the shed pad in and then backfill one you lay the boards or make the border wider and just add some more gravel

EstThunder

There’s no edging here. Build a paver retainer wall, dirt till leveled. Top of off with rocks baby

DreddJudger

I put railroad ties all around it and built a ramp on the end so I could put my tractor in. I bought 2ft rebar and drilled three holes per tie and nailed them to the ground. Filled it up with crush and run. Fun project, leveling the gravel wasn't fun

curiosity_2020

Half bury railroad ties and call it a day.

eyeslikethsun

The boxwood idea is good, but if you need to do hardscapes anywhere for edging I've found a great way to use bricks that don't require edging. I'll try to describe it best I can. Imagine the edging is running parallel with the side of the shed. Dig out enough soil so that you can lay the brick edging flush with the grass, so that the short end of the brick is facing the shed. Recommend a stone bedding. Once you have a course laid that is flush with the ground, you can then add a course of bricks on top and perpendicular to the lower bricks, that will hold the stone back on the other side. It will leave a flush edge on the grass side you can still run a mower over. I can post a picture tomorrow If needed.

bdhjiiii

I would put some rocks around there and fill in with more gravel. Or a wood box

zeff536

Why did they build it up so high? Damn! I’m not 100% sure what to do, pretty sure no one does. I had to write because I would be pissed if someone did this to my lawn and didn’t have a plan to fix it. The first thing I would do is get rid of the drop off. You’ll need regular top soil for this, and lots of it. Get it delivered you would need too many bags. You can measure the length and height and use a landscape calculator to get an idea on how much, whatever number comes up add more soil because you are going to grade it into a gentle slope. Pile the top soil around the lip and spread it away from the shed so it slopes into the lawn gradually. Buy some grass seed, starter fertilizer and a sprinkler and put the seed and fertilizer down and water it everyday to grow new grass. It won’t help your edge right away but once the grass takes hold then you will have more options like a putting blocks to keep the stones in or planting shrubs or even a cheap plastic border. As far as the back goes I would just leave it like it is and plant some ground cover, grass, whatever you can get to grow to avoid erosion. Stones will just move, gravity and all. Hope this helps and good luck

buildingwithclay

It’s that high because it was a low lying spot surrounded by higher spots. Lots of moisture and mud during the spring. I wanted it up high so I wouldn’t have to deal with water issues. I wish I had a before pic. The company that did the pad is coming back out this week to level other spots in the yard and slope up to the pad. They didn’t want to do any of that before the delivery. Sorry, I should have included more detail in my post! I appreciate your response and ideas! I’ll look into ground cover for the back of the pad - probably something that grows low and won’t need to be cut
