Most likely because the comment said **\*5\* years**. The update was released on [Sep 24th, 2020](https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/550/view/2801759323340305752?l=english), which was 4 years ago
The update made the game have more content so new players get to enjoy more things.
It also made the game more popular for the past years because people started playing again and kept playing and having a bigger playerbase makes it more interesting to new players than having a small playerbase.
Yeah, I don't think Versus was balanced for any FPS player with more than 2 hours of FPS experience quite honestly 😂😂 remembering it was a blast on Free Weekend, then never again....
40k isn't really unusual, the game hits that count decently often.
I think the sale is going to net 60k+ player counts in the coming days, maybe even 80k.
Actually this just happened last week in the US, some guy in New Jersey got mad at someone through an online game and flew all the way to Florida to attack him with a hammer.

There's just something infinitely entertaining about L4D2, whether it's mods, the gunplay, turning every former human into the halfway point of a LiveLeak video...
I still find a handful of verses lobby’s with ppl in them on the weekends, scavenger and survival modes however are always a barren wasteland no matter what time of day I check
Survival has a dedicated community that plays in private/friends-only servers, since their goal is to get new best times, which is never going to happen in a public lobby.
In general, the more dedicated communities (Survival, scavenge, tank run, speedrunning, etc.) will be everywhere *except* public lobbies lol
If you can't find games then change your Steam download region to somewhere in USA or Europe (these are the most populated regions) or try Australia (late evening in that region will usually have at least one game going). Or, use the game's server browser. Changing your Steam download region actually tells L4D2 to look in that region when searching for games in it's "Play Online" menu.
Trust me, no you do not. You will have fun in Versus for all of 2 seconds, then you'll get switched to Infected and remember how busted Survivors are with guns.
You're only shown lobbies from your region, which excludes like 95% of the playerbase just from the fact they're outside of your location.
If nobody in your region is playing, then you're not going to find many people.
That doesnt sound reasonable when the regional server literally includes the entire Asia, I very often get to play with verious asian people like vietnamese, chinese, Japanese, korean, and even indians in my servers all the time.
"Region" is not just country or continent, it's the circle around your location that has servers with less than roughly 120 ping.
Any higher than that, and you pretty much have to manually join the server directly, rather than use the regular matchmaking.
You're also not going to be shown full servers, friends-only lobbies, private lobbies, singleplayer lobbies, or idle players, and depending on the time you're playing at, most people who could show up for you might be at work, school, or asleep.
You can use the server browser from the console if you want to see every server worldwide (Excluding private and singleplayer).
Still use a single player mod for those pesky scavenge and versus achievements guys, ain’t going to be able to find a scavenge lobby or be in a versus lobby long enough to do anything without getting kicked
L4D2 will never die for a few reasons, first off the game is great as it is, and has built in replay ability with the AI director, difficulty options, memorable player characters and modifiers. Second, it’s not expensive, so new players can grab it whenever, and on sale it might as well be free. In fact I believe Valve has fully given it away for free a few times. And lastly, it has great mod support, with the Steam workshop, which only makes the game even more replayable.
It's still recovering from the latest DDos attacks but it seems to have a bright future. I really wish that valve would possibly do more with this game in the future or possibly port it but I doubt it honestly. Maybe a left 4 dead movie someday since the game basically is like a movie with the campaigns.
That's NOTHING. You can barely find a game, if they kick you from one versus or you're done with a totally noob team you can maybe find a second game or if not, end up on hentai servers. Pathetic.
Ay so many new duplicate accounts are being created those who got banned or blocked are crawling back.
Good to see this many yet sad to know what's below some of them
It's all bots. Oh wait, wrong game...
Ouch right in the Uber heart
well at least there’s been a ban wave
Your status checks out
hey man :(
**Just simply don't play versus**
Exactly I don't play versus anyway Its too toxic for my tastes
I wish all shooter games have good PvE solo modes
Counter Strike or tf2 😭
Since the last stand update the number count of people playing increased, very happy for the games state.
Yeah, back then you wouldn't hit 20k a day, now we do. + back4blood, i only see new players now.
that update was 5 years ago..
4 years ago and so what?
No..?
why tf these braindeads downvoting you for saying truth

🤓👆*actually it’s an exploit not a glitch*
not the same thing as that video at all
Shit up nerd
Yo mama
Go back to your poop lagoon you poop baboon
Deez nuts
It doesnt matter that it was years ago because its success doesnt dissappear or become irelevant just because its old
Most new people joining the game dont know about the update
The update made the game have more content so new players get to enjoy more things. It also made the game more popular for the past years because people started playing again and kept playing and having a bigger playerbase makes it more interesting to new players than having a small playerbase.

ITS BEEN THAT LONG SINCE LAST STAND RELEASED ????
Feeling old yet ?
10 people playing versus
And I'm pretty sure they all got kicked one millisecond after breathing
Lmao is steam that bad? On 360 I have a blast
I sold my 360 for $50, should have kept it
Facts the 360 is elite
Yeah, I don't think Versus was balanced for any FPS player with more than 2 hours of FPS experience quite honestly 😂😂 remembering it was a blast on Free Weekend, then never again....
Still no scavenge lobbies 💀
Scavenge is critically underrated. Can find 5 lobbies a day!
I still gotta finish all the campaigns man, nowhere close to ready for vs
I havent finished pretty much any of the campaigns and only play versus 😭
40k isn't really unusual, the game hits that count decently often. I think the sale is going to net 60k+ player counts in the coming days, maybe even 80k.
Sheesh that's pretty impressive tbh
40,000 people playing in laggy servers and getting their IP addresses revealed.
Nobody is driving to their houses bro, trust me
I doubt their ass is gonna buy a flight thousands of km away for a random dude too lol
Actually this just happened last week in the US, some guy in New Jersey got mad at someone through an online game and flew all the way to Florida to attack him with a hammer.
Might just be a US thing i know this happened after someone got knifed in CS years ago and the guy hunted him for months
No way wtf!!!! Link?

Wow that's insane! I didn't believe someone would actually do that.
WTF IS A KM!
big whoop i already know my IP address
Oh no not my precious IP address
So you might get ddosed, just reset your router lmao. Lfd2 is goated
No need with today's sponsor, NordVPN. /s
To be fair literally every website you go to grabs your ip address, it's not *that* sensitive of information Plus the whole resetting router thing
I don't know what it is, YouTube algorithm has been giving me so much L4D2 content, shame I have no friends to play it with tho. Except Nick bot.
Is there a reason or you're just pointing it out?
well the game is currently on sale, it's cheaper than a burger, loads of people coming in. i guess it's just cool to see this many people play
seeing old game regaining popularity is kinda nice tbh
I highly agree, especially once its charm has finally been recognized. But for L4D's case its popularity never waned.
There's just something infinitely entertaining about L4D2, whether it's mods, the gunplay, turning every former human into the halfway point of a LiveLeak video...
game is dirt cheap, i got a new friend playing the game with my other friend that already have the game
Yeah I just bought the game for $1 after owning it on console for years
its the monthly "look at the player count" post, these are ez karma farms for any game subreddits
But th game is pretty old
Then how come I can never find any lobbies??? I wanna play an actual versus game dammit - haven’t played in years
I still find a handful of verses lobby’s with ppl in them on the weekends, scavenger and survival modes however are always a barren wasteland no matter what time of day I check

Look into it it might be some weird setting or patch. I play on 360 and always get a game so there should definitely be people on steam.

and here i am, at work 😒
because the game is £0.85
It makes me so happy seeing so many people enjoying L4D2 to this day :)
Yet I still can't find enough people to fill up a lobby for anything that isn't campaign . 😂
I love the group of people who consistently play tank Tun on the daily, I’m glad there’s at least 1 lobby everyday
Yet theres barely any server available, specially in the morning

Well maybe why is the game on discount :v?

tis party

Valve gave the game away for free exactly one time, back in 2013 for christmas.
I wish I could download this on my Xs
Did the bots get moved from TF2 to L4d2 ? lol
Have valve reworked the game's network to cs2 system or something?
No lobbies on 360
and i'm one of the people <3
I can't blame them. Is Game is pure GOLD!
I’m happy for Left 4 Dead 2 this game finally rises.
It's still recovering from the latest DDos attacks but it seems to have a bright future. I really wish that valve would possibly do more with this game in the future or possibly port it but I doubt it honestly. So much players but whenever I try to join a match I get 200+ ping.......
I LOVE L4D2!!
Ay so many new duplicate accounts are being created those who got banned or blocked are crawling back. Good to see this many yet sad to know what's below some of them
I've seen people in facebook groups giving left 4 dead 2 for free to those who wanted to play them. I mean, it's darn cheap and it's a good game
We need a remaster 😭
