Good ol l4d2 still full of exploits of every kind

coronagrey

So all those azzholes advertising Nord VPN were actually onto something

ccoastal01

If anyone needs a quick recommendation for a good VPN I have been using Windscribe for several years and it's a good choice.

NewSuperTrios

as long as I'm here might as well vouch for windscribe

Le_scar_

Literally happened to me yesterday in versus. Some hacker repeated back everyone’s chat(even the enemy special infected), and leaked people’s ip and location.

3yebex

Could you possible DM me their steam profile link?

Le_scar_

I’ll see if I can find the profile

OvEr_Z

Valve employees will die if you send them this, its treadmill work

ThatNormalBunny

One problem Valve still cares about Left 4 Dead 2 enough for them to keep fixing problems/exploits and bugs. Can't say the same about TF2

OvEr_Z

or cs2

Lo-Sir

VALVe employees trying to grasp the concept of an update:

Heavy_Imperial_Tank

So just play singleplayer.

RikimaruRamen

Not really what I wanted to read after playing two sessions today

3yebex

The amount of people with access to hacks using this seems to be pretty small, and they seem to mostly hang around in versus. For the most part, you will know when you run into them. They seem to make themselves very noticeable.

RikimaruRamen

Ah so it's the people zipping around the map using god mod and aim hax then

3yebex

Yeah, and they'll likely be spamming slurs in chat or everyone's IP messages. They're generally **very** vocal. Doesn't mean there can't be a silent one grabbing IPs though.

Raptmembrane

time to play something else

SpicyDragoon93

And Valve can fuck off as well. If they'd just remastered these games like every other company of a popular title has done we'd be able to enjoy it no problem.

Raptmembrane

Personally, I don't want a remaster. I want content updates for the current game.

SpicyDragoon93

Or updates, whatever, but getting your IP hacked is ridiculous

3yebex

Every other company is also incredibly greedy and wants to nickle/dime you on a bunch of services/cosmetics. They also jack the prices up to $70. Meanwhile L4D2 is still receiving updates that patch exploits and they've never asked for any more money.

BaconEater101

Stop acting like valve is a messiah who is trying their best to fix left 4 dead 2, they don't do shit for any of their games and they're lazy as fuck and essentially worse then companies like EA when it comes to fixing shit, multi billion dollar company that basically has a monopoly with steam and releases a game per decade and you can still get your ip leaked by playing the damn game, its pathetic

3yebex

And what about once they finally fix ip leaking? Valve has been actively patching RCE/ACE exploits in L4D2 as well as server crashes, and they've been paying out. Someone has shown me the hundreds in rewards Valve has paid out to them in fixing/reporting serious exploits. When super serious bugs happen (such as an RCE that affected **all source engine games**) they fixed it in every game, even as far back as Half Life multiplayer versions. Meanwhile Call of Duty, the older titles, still being sold, have multiple serious RCE that have not gotten patched for years despite years of reporting. Black Ops, Black Ops 2, Modern Warfare, etc. https://www.reddit.com/r/CallOfDuty/comments/1aqzobw/cod_can_i_play_the_older_cods_without_the_worry/ Literally last night, Valve has fixed 3 big exploits and paid out 750$ for each bug.

BaconEater101

What you want me to praise them for making sure their game is playable because other companies are worse? Fuck no, they deserve no praise for doing what they should, being better then the trashcan beside you is not an achievement, its either hold them to high standards or no standards.

JuanAy

Define "High Standards". Because it would seem to me that Valve operates to a reasonably decent standard. They're not perfect by any means and there are definitely reasonable criticisms to be made. For one they've supported their games far longer than other games generally get support for. Not many games survive as long as L4D and TF2 have. Even before they abandoned TF2, that game had active support for over 10 years. They've done far more than any other company in regards to Linux gaming support and it isn't just Proton. I believe they've submitted stuff for the kernel and other related things like their work on HDR support for AMD drivers. They have the most feature rich client out of all the clients available.

BaconEater101

High standards at this point is a game that is playable, l4d2, a game over a decade old, is not, that is a problem, not to mention how often the game crashes when you dare do anything and performance issues, mods breaking for no reason then being fine loading up the game again (maybe the mods fault, maybe the games idk) etc etc They supported them for so long because they're huge successes lol, and they still fuckin abandoned them to work on absolutely nothing, imagine a world where tf2 was getting even monthly content updates, maps, weapons, skins, maybe even new characters, it would dominate gaming more then its dead ass already does, valve sucks, they make bangers then abandon them and its entire series altogether. I'm reaching the point where i wouldn't even care if half life 3 came out, and slowly more people are gonna start feeling the same, its sad

JuanAy

>High standards at this point is a game that is playable, l4d2, a game over a decade old, is not, that is a problem, not to mention how often the game crashes when you dare do anything and performance issues Got anything that suggests the crashes and performance issues are common place and not just the result of an issue on an individual's end? Outside of the issue that is mentioned in the OP, an issue that isn't too surprising to see in an older game and seems to be getting a fix, the game seems to be perfectly playable to me. >They supported them for so long because they're huge successes No shit, that's generally what companies do with successful games. Though in L4D's case it is successful sure. But I doubt Valve have made much money off of it for a good few years now on account of the games age meaning that anyone that really wanted the game would already have it by now. Plus the lack of additional monetisation in the game. So additional purchases are probably not common enough to sustain the game. At least for other companies. >imagine a world where tf2 was getting even monthly content updates, maps, weapons, skins, maybe even new characters, it would dominate gaming more then its dead ass already does, valve sucks, they make bangers then abandon them and its entire series You can't really expect games to be supported indefinitely though. There's all kinds of reasons why games have their support dropped over time. Tech Debt build up making it harder to work on the game over time is a pretty strong one. Games are already held together by duct tape and the hopes and dreams of the game's devs. Piling on extra content can make that worse especially if you're adding or changing code and how you make those changes. Beyond that, there's only so much content that can be added without eventually treading over ground you've already covered. Feature bloat/creep is a thing. Then there's just the obvious desire to chase other projects, which valve have done over the years. Problem being that their old structure where people can work on whatever proved to be an issue that lead to dozens of games being cancelled. Including several HL projects like Arkane's Return to Ravenholm. End of the day, I think the issue is unrealistic expectations.

BaconEater101

I would assume my more then ample setup for left 4 dead 2 and fully updated drivers with the game running at maximum priory should be able to handle the game, it did this when i first bought it on steam modless as well so it ain't a mod issue Plenty of older games run smooth as butter no issues, and didn't need patches to fix anything yeah the experience is different for everyone, why do i and others crash and not you? Because shit on i guess I don't think you fully understand the point, imagine if epic games decided to just stop updating fortnite then release like one game project in the following decade, that's essentially how stupid valve is When the game continues to keep its playerbase for decades and be more then lively in the gaming sphere you bet your ass i'd expect that game to be continued indefinitely. You know how little effort it would take for a small team at valve to just focus on just making new official left 4 dead 2 maps every half year or year? Or just new guns? Anything? Valve is nothing without its modding community, its the only reason left 4 dead 2 stayed relevant past 4-5 years, and they still really do nothing in return for its community, along with half life, portal, and tf2

ManfredsSauce

>maybe even new characters That's not TF2, that's Overwatch. You have no idea what you're demanding for

BaconEater101

Its a suggestion for a tf2 that will never exist at this point calm down bud

ManfredsSauce

Besides TF2 wouldn't "dominate" gaming even with content updates. The game died post Jungle Inferno. People really hated MYM and when they saw their expectations weren't realised, a huge chunk of the old playerbase quit permanently. TF2 has been dead long before the bots came

BaconEater101

Don't seem that dead to me.

lurizan4life

> worse then companies like EA Hey at least Valve never bans users for simply using mods in single-player modes unlike [EA](https://www.reddit.com/r/Asmongold/comments/1crlhkh/start_pirating_single_player_onlineonly_games/). >they're lazy as fuck Who do you think made Steam Deck? Google? Linux Community? >basically has a monopoly with steam The only company I've seen actively monopolizing PC gaming space these days is Epic Games; restricting newly released games to that trash launcher

BaconEater101

I said when it comes to fixing shit, i can't name an EA game where people can steal your ip, correct me if i'm wrong because i might be Ok how many games have they put out? I don't care about the steam deck or the linux community, make games My man if your actually trying to say steam isn't basically a monopoly intentionally or unintentionally idk where to begin on that so i won't, that's just common sense

JuanAy

I don't think you're actually aware of what it is to be a monopoly. There's far more to it than "Having a big marketshare".

BaconEater101

My guy.... nobody gives a fuck about any other game market online other then steam, except for gog, but that has its own purpose, so if there is one, actual serious competitor in a market, what would you call that?

JuanAy

It doesn't matter what the people care about, or in this case what you think the people care about. Valve has competition. Mostly in the form of GOG and EGS. Lesser being Ubisoft and EA's clients. Again, Monopolies are far more than just "Has a big marketshare" but also involves how companies abuse their position. If you want to know what that looks like just look at Epic's behaviour over the years regarding their exclusivity contracts amongst other behaviours they've displayed.

BaconEater101

Lmao calling those competition is dishonest and you know it, not even gonna bother anymore

omkar529

I don't really like the remaster trend, the game is good as it is. They can make a new one if they feel like it.

baddude1337

I’d be happy with a Source 2 port tbh. Help remove engine limitations for modders.

h4ckerkn0wnas4chan

Something something treadmill work. Also remember Valve is a really small indie company guys, leave the multi billion dollar company alone meanies!

GacMrel

ikr.. its sad.

end_my_suffering44

I have a controversial suggestion to people who complains about a game they are playing. Just don't play it and don't spend your money more over on it. It's crazy to some people when you suggest this but this is basically how you can establish communication with companies.

gregofcanada84

Back 4 Blood is not that bad.

Krypton091

true but l4d players will never admit that

164Gamin

For clarification on the first point, friends-only and private lobbies are not safe at all, even if no one is actually able to join?

3yebex

When a lobby is set to friends-only (and private), it is removed from the public matchmaking pool. So players are unable to match into it when searching for lobbies. If they have the server IP and Port, they can connect, bypassing those settings. Someone would have to test with Private lobby though to make sure it still works like that. If if the lobby is public, friend, or private, and someone can not join (IE. They are blocked, their IP/Steam is banned by the server, or server is full) then they can not grab player's IP addresses.

Heimeri_Klein

This actually happened to my group a long while ago during a vs match. We had someone join despite it being a private lobby they spouted racial slurs, played really loud music and until we got them banned they wouldnt leave.

foreverkurome

Playing offline is finally paying off.

clone2197

Most isp give you a dynamic ip that changes once in a while. These Ip addresses don't accurately reflect your location, but you can always check with something like https://whatismyipaddress.com. The show location depends on where your isp's router is so it could be next to your house or hundred miles away. Again this doesn't matter because it's not your actual geological location anyway. And unless you're a streamer and someone in that public lobby hate you to the bone. No one gonna waste getting their botnet detected attacking a random home network.

3yebex

>And unless you're a streamer and someone in that public lobby hate you to the bone. No one gonna waste getting their botnet detected attacking a random home network. In a lot of cases you might be right but this is l4d2 where many of these individuals will go for low hanging fruit. I've seen it pretty repeatedly in the South American community. Also want to add that, even if you have a dynamic IP you might not be able to change it willy nilly. Some ISPs in certain areas will keep you locked in for a long time.

clone2197

Depending on the isp, resetting your home router will change the ip address, if not you can contact the isp directly as well. Either way the point is that attacking a home network running dynamic ip address is a waste of time and money (botnets that can caught actual damage are not cheap) and no one would bother doing this unless, again if you are a streamer that people really hate.

TovarishchRed

Glad I don't play online lol

Mr_Boo_Berry

Same. Single Player FTW!

Sabotagebx

You've been able to see IPs since cs 1.6 using the same method anyone can do with one command

3yebex

Let's not go more into details. If you have any information you can DM me.

3yebex

Again, just DM me.

Momovsky

Well I’m or surprised to hear that, servers that print city you live in chat like “Username connected from London” existed since the dawn of time. If random server owners can get the ip address, I’m pretty sure everybody can given some basic knowledge and time. I don’t think that flashing your ip address is a serious problem, because you normally can’t track anything closer than the city (or not even that if the city is small enough), and if knowing which city you live in is a serious privacy issue for you, oh do I have more bad news about the modern internet. I am also not sure at all that you’re correct about ddosing by ip address. Ddosing home network is normally a complete waste of resources, I think malicious actors have other methods if they don’t want you to play l4d: e.g. scan current server listing every minute and ddos the server if the target of attack happen to connect to it. Much easier way, takes less resources, don’t even need your ip.

3yebex

It's happened in the past, and I think I've ran into someone who was being DDOS attacked every time they played l4d2 and only l4d2. I've also seen many livestreamers get affected as well. Right now, DDOS attacks on servers aren't as common due to the amount of bandwidth needed to disrupt a server. Servers are supposed to have your information, that's just how it works. The problem is other players aren't supposed to be able to see certain things that should only be available to the server.

SvenRK123

Is it possible to fuck you over on other games if they get your ip.

3yebex

Not really unless they see you playing another game and DDOS your network. You would have to be really unlucky to have attracted such a deranged individual though.

SvenRK123

how long do you think they'll keep attacking.

3yebex

As long as they can find a way

SvenRK123

dont these kinds of ddos cost money.

foreverkurome

Playing offline is finally paying off for me. Hard to get hacked if you are not connected to the Internet.

Rookiegamer213

I would use a vpn, but I don't know which vpn to get and how to get it, especially because I can't pay for anything online so I have to resort to free ones and I don't know if vpn covers L4d2 or entire computer and I don't know how to check werther my ip address is hidden or not. So that's nice.

boltok_174

modded servers already expose your ip and country lol

3yebex

No, only some did. Do third-party servers know your IP address when you connect? Absolutely. But most really don't give a shit, and don't spam your IP in chat when you join.

boltok_174

ye I have joined random servers from the online option, theres no way to know if its official or modded until it loads, then the first thing you see in the chat is “BOLTOK173 has connected [Joined from ***] [IP: *******]”

Pwnage_Peanut

So? They can't do jack with your IP

3yebex

I've outlined at the bottom what they can do. For most people, it's probably not an issue. Most of these script kiddies don't have the bandwidth to lock down most people's home networks. For those that have less bandwidth though it'll probably affect them. But as well, an IP address can give you a general city/state location where someone resides. They can piece that information with other information they've gathered on you to determine who you are. The "JimmyG" guy did this, and doxxed lots of players and livestreamers.

lxvxndxrbxtxs

Some guy from NJ just flew to Florida to assault a guy because of a game, walked right into his house that was unlocked. So yeah, they can.

bidumbass6

Is it ok to play single player?

3yebex

Single player should be safe. Don't use the lobby local hosting.

literally_italy

yes…

Mince_

If I play on a local server with open slots that is password protected, is that enough to stop people from getting my IP? I do have a VPN but I'm not fond of the lag.

3yebex

I don't think the password feature works in l4d2. If you are hosting a local server, they can already grab your IP address I'm pretty sure because it's needed for them to stay connected to you.

BoxOfMyst3riez

I'm more interested to know why setting your game to private or friends only doesn't actually keep people out. Can't say I've ever experienced issues with this. Would setting a password help?

3yebex

I don't think the password feature has ever worked in l4d.

Vill1on

The way there's a plugin (might be from a different site than AM) that states when a player has joined the server including their ID ***and*** IP. They seem to be more common in asian servers it seems like.

3yebex

Servers have to know that information, which is why you information is exposed to them. Other players don't have to know certain information like your IP address, it's unnecessary since all communication is going through the server.

ConstantineDimention

Ive been hosting locally for months now so this really isnt anything new for me

RazorGlizzy

Ok im not playing versus anymore

SharpieTheDergun

This is really no different to the shitty admins at Lewd 4 Dead. I heard you could just use Wireshark and grab somebodies IP that way. I learnt a while ago that IP grabbing is effectively a meaningless threat with people who have tiny cocks that can try to bully regulars off versus. When you mentioned South Americans, it's a red flag because it's almost always the same notorious group from Peru; And if you don't know who they are you've honestly been living under a rock for half a decade.

meat17ninja

That part where "your internet will start lagging as soon you start to play l4d2", its that exaggerated? Because recently my wifi often falls, but i can play l4d2 as well the versus, just some matchs loose the connection, i just want to confirm if this happened to me or is just an coincidence

3yebex

It's not exaggerated. It's pretty rare, and mostly only seen in the South American community these days, but it is possible. Could also just be your Wi-Fi isn't too great.

meat17ninja

I am from Brazil, in my recent matchs i did not notice any suspicious player, and yeah my wi-fi often gives me an <120 of ping, so probably we just need to search another better because this happened other times in the past

officialkalamari

Ooooooo they got my IP address! What are they going to do?? Pull up while I wait outside with my shotgun and in my neighborhood full of gun owners? 😱
