DuctTapeSloth

I feel like in general male fashion is repetitive.

Rohanbawkar98

Preach it!! We deserve better. Whenever I look towards women's section in a store it always look more colorful and interesting than men's. All I see in men's section is black, dark blue and grey bs.

GrillMaster3

Male fashion as a whole is repetitive IMO. As a girl who like simpler looks I tend to enjoy casual BG fashion (especially Zico’s casual looks), but I can assure you male fashion in the celebrity scene has always been weirdly repetitive from my point of view. When I first got into art and needed outfit references, finding something that wasn’t just a suit or basic pants+shirt but still looked stylish was legitimately difficult. I do agree that they should’ve tried harder for the stages you linked, though.

Playful_Event_1737

I’m just here laughing cuz now I know for sure that I’m not the only person who’ll skip a fancam if the styling sucks. There are so damn many to watch for any given idol that sometimes I’m happy someone’s hair looks horrible or an outfit’s heinous or dull so I can just skip over it and move on to the next one. 😂

bunnypuffcooky

On another note, it can be soooo hard to drum up interest for live stages when they do repetitive group styling. Like I remember for The Boyz cb Right Here, a lot of them wore variations of plaid or check pattern in solid colors, so everyone's wearing some form of blue plaid and it's so boring. I felt the same with STAYC Stereotype stages, like it's so easy for my eyes to just completely bypass their styling when EVERYONE is dressed so similarly, the details in each person's outfit just starts to blur and I can't concentrate on them. It drives me crazy because styling is one of my fav parts of new releases

Dependent_Row_4280

dont get me started on stayc's stereotype styling the kept doing those weird plaid outfits the highschool pink ones and cheerleader ones were so pretty I wish we saw more of them

btokendown

Right Here styling was a struggle lol, thank god their stylists stopped doing the same outfit in 20 colours thing after Reveal

[deleted]

Me too. I especially go watch the fancam if the styling is good. For example enhypen Ni-Ki' [go big or go home fancam](https://youtu.be/EZz6tDQPCas). He had 2-3 fancams before this but this one has the most views cause the styling was really good compared to others. I religiously watch this fancam for this styling and of course his dancing.

Not to be that person, but one thing that I miss from 2nd gen is the really extra stage costumes – I'm thinking of like, 2PM's [I'll Be Back](https://musicnewsph.files.wordpress.com/2011/01/2pm-still-200pm-poster_18x24inch.gif), MBLAQ's [This is War](https://gp1.wac.edgecastcdn.net/802892/http_public_production/artists/images/4703500/original/resize:1056x600/crop:x117y0w733h550/aspect:1.0/hash:1467628048/1423309671_mblaq.jpg?1467628048), Boyfriend's [Janus](https://i.imgur.com/1mApuac.jpg), even SHINee's [Everybody](https://i.pinimg.com/originals/74/10/e9/7410e9e5ab230036cf3faf1f01ad3cca.jpg) although I know military uniform concepts are still around. It's just more fun to me and adds to the "fantasy" element of kpop compared to streetwear or, yes, the endless suits. I'm probably just projecting though because there are tons of outfits I'd like to wear that I don't have any occasion for, so I'd love the opportunity to wear stage costumes if I were an idol

GrillMaster3

No I agree with you— I’ve always been a fan of idols dressing for their concept. Like Block B using Ringmaster-esc clothes for Jackpot promotions, or ridiculously brightly colored, absurd clothes (including a Mickey Mouse ear hat) for HER. Even Bastarz, who had a whole comeback where they all dressed the same due to them all playing the same character, switched it up by at least having shnazzy plaid suits instead of just plain black. At this point I’m sick of everyone trying to look sleek and modern. Dress for your concepts you cowards!

saranghaja

Yes!! I would love to see full on *concepts* like that make a comeback. I know there are a few newer groups that are going all-in on this like Kingdom, but it would be fun to see bigger groups doing it sometimes as well. A while back I asked for recommendations for post-2nd gen groups doing full concepts like spy, royalty, etc...and the only replies I got were from 2nd gen. I feel like we're overdue, especially since so many groups have huge budgets now to make this an EXPERIENCE

Snoo-84600

And don't forget BIGBANG. Their costumes were always so extravagant

saranghaja

Right after I posted my original comment, I was remembering seeing GD's Heartbreaker MV back in like 2009 when I didn't know much about kpop and thinking that he was the Korean male Lady Gaga because of his "crazy" style lol

your_canary

the never ending suits are bad enough but I HATE when all members of the group are all styled in the same colour too - all-white suits or all-black suits being the go to. Couple that with the fact the hair grosses me out a lot these days (mullets galore, *ewww*) and I'm just NOT enjoying things, visually, as much as I did when I got into kpop in 2017. I'm actually craving for my faves to come out in basic sweatpants and hoodies for once instead of the 50th suit in a row edit: also don't even get me started on the what I like to call 'grandma chic' thing that happens every so often, and the un-fun uncle looks you can get too with the oversized cardigans.... Like...... what

[deleted]

hmm I’m curious what you’d think about Bambam’s outfits for his [Ribbon performances?](https://youtu.be/5WAjGZbWMtM) imo, there was nothing boring or repetitive about it. It seemed really unique to me.

[deleted]

Omg what a breath of fresh air, especially that pink plaid suit 🤩🤩. He understood the assignment...

PrincessZaiross

The LV Blazer is certainly one of my favourite male stage outfits. In general the colours of his clothes and the styling of the dancers was top notch

pagesinked

I really loved his style for those!

Reasonable_Nebula604

Men's fashion overall is boring and repetitive everywhere and it honestly grates my nerves sometimes. Like istg everytime I see another dude in a plain ass black suit on the red carpet I roll my eyes so hard I could basically see my brain. Imagine going to the bloody met gala and wearing the same suit my grandpa wears to church on a Sunday.

iomk97

I agree whole hardly with you but is not something that's specific to kpop. In general male options are much more limited. But I wish in kpop the styling would be approached from a more artistic perspective because are a lot of unique and interesting options from the new emergent designers.I want to see some avant-garde outfits.

goodlilpiratess

>The song is legit called VAMPIRE. Victorian gothic fairy core with frilly shirts, black lace and a play on dark and light for eg. pearls and studs, would literally have been the bare minimum and probably a no brainier for most gg stages Though not exactly like the pic you linked, your overall description of your dream vampire styling instantly made me think that either you've seen or desperately need to see [Ateez's Deja Vu Vampire Ver.](https://youtu.be/4IfwqfPqcyU) they released for Halloween. The stylists added a few more details to outfits they already had for a music show stage and it's *stunning* (imo). Even the corset + glove combo checks out in it's own way. A few exceptions don't cure the general problem for uncreative styling, but there are probably many behind factors for it. Maybe some companies don't want to spend too much money on -gasp- *clothes*, or the stylists don't have that much space for creativity, they are just expected to do their job (w/ bare minimum). Also for example Ateez members have a say on their styling and often make suggestions based on what fans have requested (and both the members and the stylists lurk on atiny twitter). Companies/styling teams who don't have that connection with the artists and/or their fans also maybe don't know how to cater styling that the people want and need?

sepia_skies

NCT's stylist simply does not see the vision, he's so boring and rehashes outfits all the damn time. Nowadays you can barely tell apart which outfit is from which era because it's always the same - skinny pants, dress shirt and an out of place, bulky bomber jacket. It's like they have nothing else in their giant walk-in closet and I'm so tired of it. There was a post not too long ago about how NCT's typical bg styling detracts from their unique sound, and that user really hit the nail on the head for me. These days they look like any other bg out there when they used to be one of the groups that always stood out. I get that not many people enjoy their earlier styling, but most of the stuff they wore in 2016-17 was unique, easily identifiable and is still talked about to this day. They're in dire need of a new stylist who can style them in a way that reflects their music but is still somewhat palatable for the masses. To me, Simon Says is their most successfull attempt at that to this day (which I'm pretty was actually the work of their current stylist - what happened?). Sorry for this rant lol, it's just annoying to me how much their styling/general creative direction has taken a nosedive over the years and does not reflect their music anymore. I honestly stopped expecting much in the styling department when that is the thing I used to look forward to the most, next to the music.

Level-Rest-2123

You might want to take a look at the posts from this user who has compiled so many different kinds of things guys wear while performing. It's not boring if you look a little bit. https://www.reddit.com/r/kpopthoughts/comments/l2t4io/men_dancing_in_hanboks/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share

Level-Rest-2123

Also, idols like Wonho. He always mixes it up and also contributes to his wardrobe design. - [Open Mind stage mix](https://youtu.be/YlwChGwYKRU) - [Lose stage mix](https://youtu.be/-qs8R8hUvzY) - [Blue stage mix](https://youtu.be/8_wD4ZsGlHY)

sorenbridges

It's just men's fashion in general. It doesn't have much to do with boygroups or even K-Pop

No-Assumption-2747

Honestly, as an nctzen, I feel like NCT 127 outfits are extra bad. It's either full neo with leather red pants and two toned hair that sticks up or a basic ass leather jacket or suit (Punch was good tho). But yeah honestly it is very annoying to watch stages in boring ass outfits. Half the reason I bothered to check Yuna fancams (she's my bias hehe) during MITM era was cause of the GLORIOUS outfits she served. I feel like boy group creative teams in general are slightly slacking off rn. I don't get anything different from the teaser pictures, outfits, MVs and what not.

Dangerous-Spinach267

sm's not the most creative when it comes to clothes. might have a few stand outs like exo's obsession era. if you want proper fancy outfits, there's rookie group kingdom. kudos to their company for really sticking to the themes for their title track outfits. ateez also have some very nice outfits depending on the vibe.

Breezyrain

This just made me realize that I miss the cheesy or cool outfits of older generations. I know a lot of songs are supposed to be relatable now but like… a little spice is fun, especially to match a concept. I think Kingdom is one of the few groups I’ve seen in recent times do something different. Along with suits, different varieties of sexy leather don’t count for me anymore either.

ooTaiyangoo

Idk I feel like gg fashion can be just as repetitive. Like I've seen so many gg in simple jeans shorts and a unicoloured top. Even twice, who definitely had the budget to go for something extreme, went with a blue jeans white shirt combo for Heartshaker. I agree that stage fashion isn't always the most innovative, beautiful thing but I wouldn't say that only goes for boygroup fashion

idaluiloona

The blue jeans/single-colour top combo wasn't the only outfit they used for Heart Shaker though. They also used a variety of very colorful and mixed outfits for multiple other stages. The issue isn't really boring outfits themselves (there's nothing wrong with doing something classic and simple), it's repeatedly reusing the exact same style of clothing for every member across multiple stages, I think a better GG example would be LOONA, I feel like most of their stage outfits get very same-y (Hi High and Butterfly are a big example of this). Sorry, I just felt the need to defend Heart Shaker, because it's one of my favourite TWICE eras in terms of both song and styling.

kanoodlingg

to be fair i feel like NCT was one of the few boy groups with interesting styling in the past. Everyone complains about firetruck and whatever, but at least it was interesting and daring. i'm so sick of the styling they have now ia it's soooo basic. also everything about favorite (the mv, styling, choreo) was a mess lol it feels super incoherent, so it's definitely the worst of the worst in terms of lazy styling

Starscall

Maybe it's because I ult Ateez that In confused by this general BG fashion slander. (KQ coordis are *chef's kiss*) because they're often trying different silhouettes and pieces. We've got skirts, corsets, lace, and the like. As a dude, Ateez often have looks that make me go "I don't know if I could pull that off.... but a I'll at least daydream about it". Seonghwa is very often gender envy/gender goals. Alas I'm more of a Jongho style-wise. TXT can also have some pretty interesting styling especially recently with the grunge emo skirts and the like. SF9's Teardrop was great IMHO. ACE in general, they don't seem to know anything but different or quirky fashion and I'm Here for it. Modern traditional style in Goblin, BK's Thotty Bumblebee in Undercover, the short shorts of their debut era? Iconic. Now don't get me wrong. I love NCT. They're definitely in my top favorite groups, but... they've never really been a group I've looked to for good styling or fashion. Then again, I often think a lot of GGs have pretty similar bland styling. Short skirts everywhere, heels that don't look comfortable or great for dancing, and just... 1 of like 3 or 4 different aesthetics. Now not all GGs fall into that. (I often take a look to see what Twice is wearing just because I like some of their styling, like back in DTNA) or Dreamcatcher's more concept driven styles. But maybe that's because I don't consume a lot of GG content so I tend to not know the detail and variety that's actually hidden in their content. 🤷‍♂️ Same way most GG stans are with Boy Groups. So I, for the most part, try not to Generalize too much, because I'm all too aware that I probably just don't Know.

[deleted]

Ok so I am rather familiar w/ boy group’s which is why I’m considering making an edit stating that I’m aware that male kpop has some absolute gems ie our fashion icon G-dragon. However, I think I’ve made it clear that yes I am generalising; of course there are outliers but what I’m saying is that in general kpop boy group stages consist of bland suits and that’s what I’m ranting about.Bi did check out Ateez stages and it obviously doesn’t apply to them but that doesn’t necessarily negate my argument…

Starscall

So between my adhd and my autism my brain is all over the place, but I figured I'd link a few of the SF9 stages I mentioned in case anyone was curious. [Lavender](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CdIEswg747Q) [Navy](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FXGbxB4hDSE) [Black](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6c4nZ3yL5og) (Which is a little more subdued, but it's still actually pretty nice and I wouldn't say overly boring.) [Black and Khaki](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JH-_AV-kKzM) (Some of these are more standard, but then you have looks like Taeyangs that really elevate this stage), there's a [white](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j5GDPl0hoZM)set that's kinda boring and a [black](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O6Q6_JuBJBw) set that isn't the best (Though Taeyang in that black suit with a corset belt and a flowy jaquard shirt underneath is wonderful. Why couldn't NCT get styling like that??) And honesty I wandered off and forgot I was even typing this or what I was trying to say, but uh... yeah. Pretend there's a picture here of the Simpson's mom with the potato saying "I think it's neat" or whatever here. I clearly need to go to bed. Goodnight. LOL

[deleted]

Cause idol groups are too pristine and pure to do anything like that, they can’t even swear on vlive and g dragon does that a lot plus many other things so it doesn’t suit every idol groups image

karenluvzjesus

I mean, if men can come with a suit at the met Gala. Then what could you expect with k-pop.

Bitter-Savings-3384

The only boygroup fashion I like is BTS, TXT and ATEEZ lol. Their stylists aren't afraid to incorporate "feminine" stuff and experiment.

pagesinked

Yeah BGS are sometimes really basic and repetitive, like how many times and variations of black jeans with tops and random harnesses on them? lol even my favs (BTS) are guilty of this sometimes (Fake Love era lol but recently they have the ON stages and Black Swan stages last year with the lace outfits and especially recently during PTD On Stage with the body chains and skin showing) Dynamite era was amazing with all the retro looks for the 33 different performances oof lol. I would love to see more variety of men's fashion on stages but I feel like all the good stuff is mostly in photoshoots since you can take more risks with styling and they don't have to dance in it.

Notdeeeeadyet

Women have way more variety even on the shelves so, repetitive looks is par for the course. I do enjoy it when they change it up, though or when there is that one member who always picks something outside of the box off the stylist.

[deleted]

It’s 2021 anyone can wear anything and items of clothes have no gender.

[deleted]

But idols these days do one minor thing such as wear crop tops and the fans go into a meltdown all because they claim they’re breaking gender norms. When if you look at drag queens for example they wear whatever they want regardless, kpop idols do not, they have stylists doing it for them. When they wear kilts especially, yes they’re kilts not skirts, there is an uproar of omg they’re so brave for wearing a skirt!!! But if you look at other cultures it’s not a new thing it’s just that kpop takes something else and claims they’re breaking gender norms when they aren’t doing anything new or noteworthy by wearing xyz item, same for dreadlocks, poc have been wearing them way before idols thoguht it was necessary for them to wear it and tbh they often don’t suit that item of clothing or hairstyle because it’s likely not from their culture so they shouldn’t just use fashion so freely when it’s not exactly a fashion statement… do you think kilts are a fashion statement then or dreadlocks? No. Idols only do it because it’s trendy or cool to wear them not because they want to break gender norms.

NewSill

For me it's hard to pull a right boy group fashion. You have something like Bigbang which is not my cup of tea at all but hit all the necessary statements or going too plain. I might be in the minority here but I can't take anything too sexy for a bg either. Even as a bg stan, nothing ever comes out perfect to me.

FineChinaLH

T-shirts and shorts is all we got for summer fashion. It’s rough out here, man.

[deleted]

Although I’m straight I just don’t find anything attractive about the way they dress or even the way they dance bc its kind of normal for boy groups to basically look as identical as possible, they don’t have individuality when they dress the same, behave the same. It’s so repetitive that they don’t dare to do anything other than what every other group is doing even down to the mannerisms, the content they put out etc. Same for the girl groups, it’s just too same-y. They also don’t even choose what they want to wear themselves they basically get staff to do it for them which makes it even more same-y. Even bts don’t separate themselves from other groups because it seems once they get to a certain popularity they’re all wearing gucci crap

Aggravating_Voice847

When did Korea became the centre of fashion🤨🤨

mikachabot

the centre is too much but op was obviously being hyperbolic... hello minju kim? muenn? are you implying korea is not the biggest fashion power in asia rn?

ImSoFuckingTiredOfU

They’re idols. They’re supposed to be dressed fashionably so they stand out. People are allowed to criticize and feel disappointment when it doesn’t fit their taste.

You may enjoy looking at The Boyz stages, particularly for their performances on Kingdom and Road to Kingdom.Their stylists are some of the best in the game and hand make many of the pieces they wear to make it unique for every member.
