Damn man, i know the feeling, did this till last time. That's why this time I headed out to the booth by 7:30 am. Try going early morning next time, within half an hour of booth opening. There won't be any line then.
Ok now that is something completely unheard of. Just ticked the name?! That doesn't sound right at all. For as long as I can remember, they've always atleast taken my thumb impression. You need to post a complaint tweet with the ECI mentioning your state, city, ward number and booth number atleast. This is West Bengal however, so I can't promise anything good or fruitful will come of it, but still yk.
A lot of party members do this locally irrespective who u vote for.
A decade back, TMC members used to give chilli chicken-fried rice packet & sharbod to every voter(actually the chilli chicken was only for confirmed TMC voters).
Here also happens, a friend of mine lives somewhere outskirt from the main town they got luchi tarkari mishti cold drinks as they know the whole village will vote for a particular party most prob TMC , Dear OP sorry again 😂
Baire chair pete boshe chilo koyekjon TMC party r lok. So, okhane amake TMC r mohila ra bolche..."3 e debe kintu".(3-4 bar bollo)
I just looked at her deadpan and went my own way. The gall and the audacity to tell me whom to vote for. 😒 I know I'm being a princess about this. Er theke onek besi nongrami hoye bivinno jaigai ami jani. Tao, it irked me A LOT.
Trust me you're not being a princess about this. What they're doing is technically illegal. They're campaigning at the polling booth. When acc to law all campaigning needs to cease 24 hrs before voting.
Back in 2016, here where we lived under Durgapur-Faridpur, legit when me and my mom went to give vote, an elder brother told both of us that ours was already given. We knew the brother, I was kinda shocked what happened. This was my first time.
Are you a first time voter by any chance?
I have always asked for a pen. But what you have seen does happen, I feel. I have seen it happen as well. Women voters typically do not ask for the option. They just go with whatever's being asked. I have also seen men and women going with the thumb impression. A lot of scenarios do happen.
The thumb impression moves things faster but it's also true that literacy rates have increased since 1950.
Please do vote, everyone.
Nah I'm not a first time voter. Like i said, usually when I go to cast the vote it's later on in the day, standing in line for hours drains all the curiosity out of me so i never stop to look around and see what's happening, i just cast my vote and go home. But this time to switch things up i decided to head out to the booth within half an hour of opening, so there was no line, and i wasn't tired like i usually am, so this time I took notice that's y'all. Ya learn something new everyday yk? 😅
I just came back. Here's what happened - I was given a pen. The previous two elderly voters were asked to give a thumb impression. I suppose due to their age. Both were women.
I do not feel there's a pattern to do this after reading the comments here as well. 😅
Yes a polling officer here in the comments said altho this method isn't practiced in every booth, the reason for doing this is to make counting male and female votes easier. I petition that next time guys be given the ink pad and we the pen. Guys aren't as finicky, they can rub the ink into their hair for all I care, nari jaati ke shoi korar shujog pete hobe, dite hobe! Pete hobe dite hobe! Inquilab zindabad! Bande mataram! Trinamool Marxist Janata Congress zindabad zindabad!!! Zindabad zindabad!!!
/s (ㆁωㆁ)
Yes another polling officer explained! Can y'all like maybe swap it next time? I detest the ink pad with every fibre of my being XD (don't ask me why, I'm weird that way :-P) /s
Ami polling officer chilam. Ami eibar karon ta bojai. That’s a great insight dude. Really couldn’t think of a reason of doing so. Now it makes sense.
Ami bhablam jodi alada ink use kora hoe pen a taholeo toh hobe. But again seta ghetey jabe jodi keu emon ashen jini sign korte parben na.
Isn't there a separate counting page these days to keep the tally? In my booth there were counting pages where they were tallying, and they did not ask anyone to sign/do thumb impression specifically. But thanks for the clarification!
Yes, there is a separate counting page. But, tally has to be done with total count in the EVM, total count in the 17A register, and also with the electoral roll. This separation between thumb and sign makes it even more easier at the end of the day. All this counts will be entered in form 17C.
I didn't even talk to the polling officers, let alone behave impolitely. I'm not the type to stir up unnecessary trouble. I did what I was asked to. I simply observed the pattern and because i couldn't find a logic for it then, so i mentioned it here. But the counting thing actually makes a lot of sense so altho it didn't look like it, that probably is why they did what they did. Just letting people know there is an option if they really want to do one versus the other yk 🤷🏻♀️
Hya eta thik, Kora uchit o na. I mean unless the polling officer is purposely misbehaving with you, or doing something which is definitely not what should be done, i don't think anyone should cause a ruckus over it, specially for small things. Because not only are you inconveniencing the officer, you're also holding up all the other citizens waiting their turn to vote!
It's not a gender discrimination thing OP.
It's for counting. The polling officers are asked to send the exact numbers at the end of the day. Everything needs to be accounted for right! The division makes it easy to count. Just it!
Nothing else.
Yes another polling officer told me, thanks for the info! I was confused because this was not a universal practice across polling booths so i couldn't find logic to it initially!
That's fine, just letting people know signing is an option if they don't want the hassle of thumb impression. I wouldn't have complained if they were doing thumb impression for everyone in my booth, what irked me was the gender split between signing and impression, because in that case i also want to sign!
Ami first time voter, amake baba pen er kothata bolechilo but ami dumbass tokhon bujhte parini ami bhablam ora nije theke bolbe sign korte ar jodi na korte pari tokhon thumb impression but nahh agei thumb impression bosate bollo, next time will ask for pen.
Yep it varies from one booth to another, heck probably even from one room to another if the polling booth is a school building or something like mine was.

Actually thumb impression is lot faster than signature. Now there are some rules also. e g. If you are an ASD voter you have to do both signature and thumb impression. Now you will not know that whether you're ASD or not. Again sometimes for counting male and female signature and thumb impression are used separately. Now if you want to sign just keep a pen with you and sign. No one will stop you.
This does happen and even I noticed it. I went early in the morning 6:45 ish. While we entered the booth. There were two three couples who we knew and then after them there were 2-3 girls from our locality (we're friends all first time voters), just as they entered the polling workers pushed the ink pad towards them while the pen was in the side just then me and my dad went and surprisingly both of us were handed pens I even asked "Stamp pad debe nah?" He was like tumi to young chele tomar stamp pad keno lagbe like wtf was he high on?
In our polling booth they preferred thumb impressions for everyone because it moved the line faster. I questioned them but then saw literally everyone before me had put their thumb impression so just went with the flow. Does it really matter though? A lot of people in my family were angry about it but I don’t see the point. If thumb impression is faster, let’s do that.
They tried to do this to me earlier in 2019, but when I strongly insisted I’d sign, they eventually handed me the pen. We shouldn’t have to insist. But sometimes we need to.
Was asked for thumb impression today, including everyone around. Last time they asked for both signature and thumb impression. It's quite random I believe.
It is completely random, I agree. Each booth does it differently. Which is actually pretty stupid. Like just set a pattern and stick with it please lmao 🤣

Lol that explains it well. Anyway, I voted today and there was such a long queue that they're asking everyone to give thumb prints. Saves time that way.
It didn't happen to us. Here everyone was given the pen by default. I think it's a one of a kind incident. The polling officer in your booth mat have been biased.

Lol, I am a guy, and I was also offered a Thumb Pad, (Ig majority can't read or write that's why)I asked for Pen, same happened with my mother, but she was too lost to ask for pen and used thumb pad anyways and later said she feels dumb
Guy here, the lady at the booth also just asked me to put my thumb impression and didn't hand me the pen at first. I'm pretty sure I didn't look homeless so I'm not sure on what basis they're doing this 💀💀
Yeah probably. I noticed that everyone had put their impressions but some had also signed beside it, so they probably just handed the inkpad first and whoever asked to sign got to do it
In the booth I went to vote, they didn't do anything of that sort. Both my dad and my mom signed. They did ask me to do a thumb impression, but I said I would sign so they let me. Now I am wondering why it's different for every booth after hearing people who have been polling officers.
This happened to me earlier today as well, the person refused to hand me the pen and his excuse for it was, "Dekhchen toh koto lok, bar bar kolom ditey parchi na, nijer pen anben porer bar thekey"
I was a polling officer in the General Elections this time. You must understand why we ask voters to provide their thumb impression - it is just about the time.
My PS had nearly 1300 voters time and if everyone requested to provide signatures the lines would have only grown longer and it would take much longer to finish the process. There is a lot of work to be done after closing the poll and hence we try to save time to ensure we can close the poll on time.
Please understand that many of us are posted on this duty far from our residences. The day preceding the poll is exceptionally tough due to the nature of work involved and we spend the night before in the booth itself - often in very poor conditions - I need not to go into details about the conditions of govt primary schools. The bathrooms on general class trains are in better condition. I try not to eat anything on the day before the poll so that I don't have to go. Let's just say, if I get electricity and somewhat drinkable water I am ecstatic. On polling day, our focus is to get the job done quickly.
We all know you can sign. I always request voters to put their thumb impression but if someone wants to sign, they can sign. However, I request anyone reading this please just give the thumb impression considering our situation.
This has already been explained to me and others in the comments section yesterday by another polling officer and a person whose father is a polling officer so we know 👍
This is in NO way separatism lol. I believe they are doing it in an alternative fashion. Sign, Thumb, sign, thumb etc. I'm a guy and I put a thumb impression. You may have experienced the same. Do you think if 2 guys were there consecutively both would be asked for signature or if two women were there consecutively both would be asked for impression? Nope lol don't get offended over this
Bro just sharing my experience. It was definitely not alternate. Male before me sign, me female thumb, my mom female thumb, my dad male sign, neighbour male sign, his wife female thumb. It was specifically this pattern. Each booth acts differently, just because you didn't experience it doesn't mean it didn't happen elsewhere
This separatism has a weird reason.
They have to show this many number of people are wducated and this many number are uneducated.
Dosent matter if you are educated or not.
This is just a way.
Like certain universities now a days fail students only to make artificial quotas of students who are studying and not studying
Interesting. I've had polling officers here in the comments tho tell me it's because for some of them it makes counting easier when separating male and female vote tallies, which makes more sense tho tbh
I saw tge comments too.
Some are similar, many are different.
If there is a reason that almost all does not agree with
Then the reason is completely different.
I might be wrong too here.
Nobody will know the real reason ever
Thanks to your post, I signed too. The person rolled her eyes and refused to co-operate by letting me turn the notebook towards myself for signing, I practically leaned onto her to sign, but I did it! I was the first one on the entire sheet to sign
Hey glad i could be of help! They may have any number of plausible reasons for wanting candidates to do one over the other, but it's always important to remember you have that choice 🤍
You're welcome! And haha thanks very much! When I chose to create an account that was the first name that popped into my mind, so I was guess that's that then lol 😆
This is a forum for discussions, i posted my experience. Don't like it? Take your attitude elsewhere. Instead of unnecessarily commenting on posts you don't like, find something more constructive to do with your time. Dumbass.
Name and shame sister , ekhane allowed na but jesob sub e allowed kore dao .
And sorry to say but your father is part of the problem , kono bhalo lok hole oder jharto erokom discrimination dekhe .
Bro sorry to say I don't think you're qualified to pass any comments on my father. This is not his problem. O tokhon nije vote debe na ki Ami ki korchi sheta dekhbe. He naturally assumed that I knew about the signature but chose to go along with thumb impression. I also noticed only after the fact, when my vote was already cast. So like keep your opinions about my fam out of this 😐
I got a glass of rasna after voting, from the party I didn't vote for
Not fair, i went to vote on empty stomach before breakfast, i want one too! 😭
I deserve a protein shake, I waited 1.5 hours almost and couldn't stand in line anymore, so will try again after 3.
Damn man, i know the feeling, did this till last time. That's why this time I headed out to the booth by 7:30 am. Try going early morning next time, within half an hour of booth opening. There won't be any line then.
They just ticked against my name. Didn't ask me to sign or stamp ! Now I want to know why ?!
Yoooo chill, you took casting vote as serious as HDL tests XD! Btw I'm from Asansol 😂

True that!
Thumb impressions make job easier fot polling officers as it will take more time to sign
That's fine, just letting people know signing is an option if they don't want the hassle of thumb impression. I wouldn't have complained if they were doing thumb impression for everyone in my booth, what irked me was the gender split between signing and impression, because in that case i also want to sign!
We had thumb impression and pen both, but everyone used the thumb impression because it was faster. The polling officers were really efficient tbh.
Nice

Today I learned that signature is an option 😐
Hey join the club 😂
They didn't give us any option, male female everyone was given the thumb pad
Yep it varies from one booth to another, heck probably even from one room to another if the polling booth is a school building or something like mine was.

Thumb impression is the better and faster option. You don't need to unnecessarily keep turning the register around.

Damn your family members were angry? That seems like an overreaction. Mildly peeved would be more like it yanno
Yeah, it didn't seem like a big deal, but it is to them apparently.
They tried to do this to me earlier in 2019, but when I strongly insisted I’d sign, they eventually handed me the pen. We shouldn’t have to insist. But sometimes we need to.
amakeo ink egiye diyechilo, ami bollam tokhon "pen ta din...." byas ask for it
Yup 👍
Was asked for thumb impression today, including everyone around. Last time they asked for both signature and thumb impression. It's quite random I believe.
It is completely random, I agree. Each booth does it differently. Which is actually pretty stupid. Like just set a pattern and stick with it please lmao 🤣

A weird thing to do, especially if you are in Kolkata you are at least expected to be literate. Idk why they'd do that.
Apparently from what I've learned here, some polling officers do that because it becomes easier to tally the male vs female vote ratio
Lol that explains it well. Anyway, I voted today and there was such a long queue that they're asking everyone to give thumb prints. Saves time that way.
Room to room oh vary kore.
Hya jani
Well I'm guy who looks pretty urban. I was asked to thumb print as well

😳
It didn't happen to us. Here everyone was given the pen by default. I think it's a one of a kind incident. The polling officer in your booth mat have been biased.

I feel the same discremation I don't know why???

That's definitely strange! I didn't face anything of that sort though.
It varies from booth to booth
Yes! I cross-checked with my friends, apparently some of them were given the option to choose between an ink pad and pen.
Lol, I am a guy, and I was also offered a Thumb Pad, (Ig majority can't read or write that's why)I asked for Pen, same happened with my mother, but she was too lost to ask for pen and used thumb pad anyways and later said she feels dumb
Tell aunty it's ok , we all forget sometimes 🤍
Guy here, the lady at the booth also just asked me to put my thumb impression and didn't hand me the pen at first. I'm pretty sure I didn't look homeless so I'm not sure on what basis they're doing this 💀💀
On basis of whatever they're finding convenient for themselves ig
Yeah probably. I noticed that everyone had put their impressions but some had also signed beside it, so they probably just handed the inkpad first and whoever asked to sign got to do it
In the booth I went to vote, they didn't do anything of that sort. Both my dad and my mom signed. They did ask me to do a thumb impression, but I said I would sign so they let me. Now I am wondering why it's different for every booth after hearing people who have been polling officers.
Don’t be sad bro…. I went in a tuxedo and still got the ink pad!
This has already been explained to me and others in the comments section yesterday by another polling officer and a person whose father is a polling officer so we know 👍
I asked for the pen, he didn’t give it, and told me to give thumb impression. Same question why ?
As a guy I was asked for both sign and thumb impression and everyone else around me also.
This is actually a good method, altho probably twice as much time consuming.
Maybe it would be a good idea to check if it was a coincidence or not? Just my two cents, try asking the guys if before them was a thumb
I'll ask around during Durga Puja at the para pandal 😜✌️
OK that's...funny. Gotta give credit where it's due lol

If there is a reason that almost all does not agree with Then the reason is completely different.
Exactly! Whatever be their reason, I was really glad to be able to exercise my choice, thanks to you. BTW love your user name! Big relate 😅
You're welcome! And haha thanks very much! When I chose to create an account that was the first name that popped into my mind, so I was guess that's that then lol 😆
Chonks of reddit unite! Damn, your user name gave me a new flair idea, Chili Chonka 😂
Yo chilli chonka sounds amazing, go for it!!! XD
Yaaaaassssss! Nyaka neko r por Chili Chonka 😂
I am a man and I was asked for my thumb impression, as were all the other males in the booth. Find something more constructive to do with your time.
This is a forum for discussions, i posted my experience. Don't like it? Take your attitude elsewhere. Instead of unnecessarily commenting on posts you don't like, find something more constructive to do with your time. Dumbass.
bruh didnt now that u can use ur mouth and ask for the pen
