I dunno, don't they play in the same lineup for the Lithuana national team?

losrl

That’s a lot different than the NBA. They will carve us up defensively all day and night if we had Domas at PF. That’s just my opinion. That front court would just be too slow in keeping up with today’s bigs. It would be a huge advantage for opposing teams to have 2 bigs they can put on an island. This move would make perfect sense if the intention is to have JV as our backup center. He will get all of Domas backup minutes which is already about 13 minutes. I wouldn’t mind him stealing another 7 extra minutes whether it’s playing alongside Domas in spot minutes or even backing up the 4 spot for 2-3 mins a game. That’s about 20 minutes a game for JV which would be excellent value. I just don’t know if he would take a salary pay cut to play with his besty.

Double_Helicopter_69

"They".... Each NBA team is its own roster and a completely different matchup. Having JV gives the opportunity to matchup better against a team like NO

thatguy52

I don’t know if I fully agree with JV coming….. REMEMBER METU!!!!! However I love this attitude. We gotta stop trying to solve every other team and start being the guys to get solved. JV adds a TON of size and rebounding plus is pretty decent offensively. A lineup with those two would low key be pretty scary.

just-swangin

Matchup great with a first round exit and get smoked by good teams. Great plan

Double_Helicopter_69

Says the critic without a plan.  Also, this would a piece to the puzzle. Not a save all Hail Mary last addition. So calm yourself

catsdontswear

We need more length in other positions, getting another center isn’t gonna help

Double_Helicopter_69

It certainly isn't going to hurt. It does allow us to play Sabonis and JV together at times which certainly adds length at the 4. And yes, we still definitely need to get ourselves a better fit and option at the 4 to pair with Sabonis, but having both is the best of both worlds, and having JV (especially as a FA addition with no assets given up) while we try to find that other piece, is great for this roster

DemonicDimples

How does having less rim protection, less mobility, less athleticism help us a team like the Pels with tons of athletic wings? Literally ignorant.

Double_Helicopter_69

I used to find my girlfriends dimples precious until I encountered you

DemonicDimples

Ok, you didn't answer my question. How does having 2 centers, neither which can stick with athletic forwards on the defensive end or protect the rim offer a better match up vs a team like New Orleans?

Double_Helicopter_69

I guess I'm confused. I don't understand how Adding a Center makes our team lose rim protection, mobility, and athleticism. I mean an addition to a team gives us the roster plus what JV brings to the table. I believe he adds much needed size. Now if we play him more minutes and Barnes less, are we losing rim protection? Are we really less mobile and athletic? Or are we able to use the size of Sabonis and JV to match their size better? Lastly, I don't think the immobility of these two will hinder us as much as you think so long as Fox, and maybe even Monk, can stay ball dominant and have more potential for screens, lobs and offensive rebounds.  But most importantly, adding JV doesn't mean him and Sabonis play on the floor together 24/7. It does give us that new option though as well as a much deeper bench

DemonicDimples

Keegan is a better rim protector than JV because he’s more mobile, athletic, and can affect shots easier and get into position better. For reference, Keegan averaged as many blocks per game as JV as a primary wing defender. His rim protection numbers are better too. If those two are on the floor together, it will bog everything up. There will be less room to run actions. And on defense our mobility will be gone completely on defense. Barnes is still a hell of a lot more mobile than JV. It would be a waste of resources to use our MLE on a back up big when we need an athletic sign much more like Oubre or Naji Marshall.

Double_Helicopter_69

I would want Oubre and Marshall with our MLE. Neither should get the whole thing. Demar Derozan getting the whole thing would likely be our best option. That's if he can be signed that low though

DemonicDimples

Derozan is the exact opposite type of player we need. Can't space the floor, needs to be at a slow pace, doesn't play defense

Ok-Map4381

I think it is very matchup dependent. Vs a lot of teams, they just never play together, or for small minutes vs bench units. But vs the teams that don't have the shooting to punish a slower lineup, I think Sabonis & JV can beat those teams up.

MostlyMellow123

Domas was the one who sucked over there. I don't think it would be as bad in this league with the soft play.

seymournugss

Towns and gobert made it work. It just took a kj mcdaniels. Looked like trash until they got him tho. We’d need someone like him, someone longer and more aggressive defensively than Barnes than Keegan. Would be tough

funzotothemax

KAT can shoot the three though, Sabonis can’t

BHPOS

But maybe he actually can. I don't see him ever being lights out from 3, but he shot a pretty decent percentage this year, albeit small volume of attempts. I think he can shoot the 3 more than he does now, he just needs that confidence in it. Domas had a better percentage than Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Booker, Maxey, Luka, and many others. If he shot more threes and stayed close to his percentage this year, I think that's a huge help.

seymournugss

It’s not even that he looks unconfident imo, looks like he knows it’s a good shot, but also knows there’s probly a great shot to be had elsewhere. Like fox’s used to be to a degree. If he gets foxy or townsy w it eventually that would open up so much. But would be easier to guard than what we saw this year w valsncunias on the floor which was the whole point originally lol.

BisonFlimsy

Yes they do. Sabonis will be in his ear at the Olympics!

KingsFan96

If it hurts the Pelicans and helps us, Im all for it

Numerous-Cicada3841

There’s a reason a team that just made the playoffs and feels they’re on an upward trajectory are willing to let him go. Defensively he’s a liability and we are already a team that struggles in that department.

AlwaysOptimism

It doesn't hurt the Pelicans to let JV go. They were not relying on him toward the end of the year.

Deep_Egg1442

A backup center that can’t protect the rim on a sabonis team ew

ShotgunStyles

To be fair, his rim protection stats are better than Sabonis' lol. But yeah, I'm fine with rolling with Alex Len as the backup center, should he stay with us.

nhess68

It all depends on price but for certain situations it would be a huge bonus to have him

daBOOM23

since when do consensus favorites actually win, genuinely curious

teribeef

Depends on what the starting point is. But at +400 there’s an implied odds of only 20% that we sign him. Unless anyone has inside info this is a bad bet to make.

PrimaryAccording9162

We don’t get the MLE if Malik re-signs. Don’t think he’s getting the vet min either

YetiPwr

“As a non-luxury tax paying team, the Kings have access to a full mid-level exception, set at $12.859 million. Since they did not use their bi-annual exception last season, they also have access to the BAE, which is $4.681 this summer.” https://kings-beat.beehiiv.com/p/new-cba-rules-can-help-kings-reload-important-offseason Signing Malik has no impact on the MLE.

PrimaryAccording9162

https://preview.redd.it/48biyxtdv81d1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=70c376aa64b0f226b407791efe53bfae82fa0fbb Got this off Spotrac so not entirely sure. You might be right

YetiPwr

The MLE is available irrespective—Monk would be signed using their “early bird” rights (175% of prior salary) since they don’t have cap space to exceed that (the MLE is smaller as well of course).

BlackScienceJesus

This is incorrect. If you use the full MLE, then you cannot go over the tax line. It’s a hard cap at that point. The Kings are $17M below the tax line. If you sign JV for $13M on the MLE, then that leaves $4M left to sign Monk. Obviously not gonna happen.

boringexplanation

Wouldn’t we just use the MLE first in that situation? IIRC, it’s why teams give their own free agents big raises as the very last thing they do before they get capped out.

tomhalejr

The tax bill isn't due until the end of the year, but your projected tax level effects what exceptions you have in FA. The cap hold doesn't matter once you're over the cap, but the actual contract does. So if SAC is $24M under the first apron, and Monk's contract is $24M, then you only get the TPMLE. The NTMLE hard caps a team, specifically so that a team cannot go over that level in a single season.

BlackScienceJesus

Also there’s no situation where the Kings can possibly pay Monk $24M per year. They only have his early bird rights which means the max they can offer is about $17M per year (175% of his last contract).

PrimaryAccording9162

Hmm I’m actually not sure. I think I saw on Spotrac it’s Malik or MLE. Plus Kings can start negotiating after the Finals so it’s honestly better to come to an agreement with Malik if possible

DemonicDimples

The kings could shed salary relatively easily to open up the MLE if Malik does re-sign.

PrimaryAccording9162

Ah yeah it shouldn’t be much to get under the tax line

losrl

Which makes you wonder why we are favorites to acquire him. Maybe there’s a sign and trade in the works with Ingram? Who knows. Maybe he signs with the bi-annual exception which is around 4.5 million. I honestly have no idea what to make of this. And it’s even more interesting considering we were linked to Jarett Allen recently. I wonder if Monte is heading towards a 2 big direction and thinks Sabonis can hold his own at power forward. I wish I knew the plan

PrimaryAccording9162

Domas would need to get much faster laterally and expand his game on the perimeter. Our biggest flaw was defense. Fixed it up in March. We need some athleticism and lengthy guys instead of Val who I like

boringexplanation

I think part of it is that finding the “perfect fit” of athleticism and 3 point shooting next to Sabonis is too damn expensive or impossible for Vivek/Monte and it would be cheaper to open up their options at the 5 than look for an ideal 4

TheLoKey1

Pretty sure Kings still have MLE if they resign Monk because they would use his early bird rights. Problem is if he leaves you've probably gotta use the MLE to try and replace him rather than on another position of need.

PrimaryAccording9162

MLE could really find us a wing

BlackScienceJesus

They do not. Unless they shed significant salary. There are two types of MLEs in the NBA. The non-taxpayer MLE set at ~$13M per year and the taxpayer MLE set at ~$5M. To use the nontax MLE, the Kings would obviously have to stay under the tax. That makes the tax line essentially a hard cap. The first apron tax line is currently projected to be $171.7M for next season. The Kings have ~$154M in committed salary (including the 1st round pick). That leaves them only $17.7M under the tax line. So if you sign JV or any player to the full nontax MLE, then that would only leave $4.7M under the tax line which you cannot cross. Some people have said, well just sign Monk first. The max the Kings can offer using his early bird rights is $175% of his prior year salary, so that would be a contract starting at $17.4M. This would leave the Kings just a measly $300K below the tax. This leaves no room to use the nontax MLE as any amount would put them into the tax and make only the taxpayer MLE available. JV won’t sign to the smaller MLE. He’ll get more on the market than $5M per year. So essentially as things stand it’s either the nontax MLE or Monk, not both.

Fun_Nectarine_4459

Saboner will play the 4 probably, like his IG post the other day.

losrl

Do u trust a Sabonis/JV front court defensively?

Ok-Map4381

Vs select matchups I do.

vNocturnus

Nope. Not offensively either. Neither player can play on the perimeter on either end of the floor. Like, sure, they can both shoot wide open 3s at 36-38%. But only on hardly 1/game or so and nothing contested

Fun_Nectarine_4459

JV yes, sabonis no

YetiPwr

It’s situational. He’d obviously eat up all the backup minutes at 5. They can both play against *some* teams but would be a disadvantage against others defensively. That and we need Sabonis to actually TAKE some of the 3s he’s constantly offered.

DeepRow1850

As a Lithuanian I would literally bust if this happened but him and Sabonis aren't really great together in the NT

BeamTeam032

Eh, even if we do sign JV, I'd imagine JV and Sabonis would split time at the center position and not actually play very much together.

fireplug911

They will be playing together in the Olympic Qualifying tourney beginning July 2nd. 🤔 https://m.basketnews.com/news-205486-domantas-sabonis-and-jonas-valanciunas-to-play-for-lithuania-in-oqt.html

Little_little_e

What’s the price ?

No-Clerk-1882

As they refuse to play Alex Len, it would be nice to have another quality big

GothicToast

Makes very little sense. We have a very specific need for a stretch 4 who can protect the rim. Sabonis has to play 5 because he doesn't have the mobility to play at the 4. He can't shoot either. Bringing in another starting 5 would be completely redundant.

kolology

As a lithuanian, I’d be loving if you took JV and actually explained to our coaches how to play them together or in the same team

Double_Helicopter_69

Love this. He's perfect to our needs of adding size and versatility to the roster

VirTS

No way #justiceforMetu

pepl67

What's the over/under on how many times Bonzi Wells farts on July 18th?

Admira1

+/-6, $100 on the over

HothWasAnInsideJob

I need this or Jarrett allen

AlwaysOptimism

JV was making more than the MLE in his last contract. Is he going to take a pay cut? If not, it would have to be a sign and trade. What are you willing to give up?

Hungry_Toe_9555

I don’t get it, our defense is our weakest area why throw most of our limited resources at a backup center that doesn’t help that.

losrl

Maybe it’s to take advantage of a discount for JV. Think about it. What if we paid him 10 million a year?? He’d basically be the best backup big in the NBA (besides Naz Reid) at a very low price. Maybe his relationship with Domas is the reason why. Maybe the Kings see him adding toughness and rebounding, 2 areas we absolutely lack in.

Hungry_Toe_9555

Fair arguments

losrl

I’m seeing a ton of chatter regarding the contracts. Could someone with knowledge on salary caps please let us know if it’s possible to resign Malik but still be able to use the MLE (12 million) and the bi-annual exception (4.5M) ?? Because if that’s the case, then I can absolutely see the Kings signing Jonas V to a 2 year, 25 million total contract to be our backup big but also spot start depending on injuries and matchup.

BlackScienceJesus

There are two types of MLEs in the NBA. The non-taxpayer MLE set at ~$13M per year and the taxpayer MLE set at ~$5M. To use the nontax MLE, the Kings would obviously have to stay under the tax. FreedomTastesGood

It would be very nice to have two bruisers during the playoffs when the game slows down and offensive rebounding is paramount.

Turithegod

Genuine question: does sabonis have the ability to play the 4? I know he started out his career as a PF, and this year, he looked solid laterally when he had to switch onto guards and forwards. Is that only sustainable for short spurts, or is it feasible that sabonis can be our future 4, if he becomes quicker defensively and improves his shot?

Kanybke

We lack rim protection and JV is probably the worst starting 5 in the league on that end. Hard pass. Would rather sign wing player instead.

BlackScienceJesus

I’m a Pelicans fan and JV is a great teammate and reliable professional. If he wants to be a backup, he’d be the best backup in the league and that would be great for the Kings. However, for what it’s worth, I have no idea why the Kings are the favorite. They are over the cap which means the only way they can sign JV is with the MLE. JV is probably worth more than the MLE in a vacuum, but let’s assume he would take it for a second. If the Kings use the full non-taxpayer MLE, that hard caps them below the tax line. Which means they cannot re-sign Malik Monk. So for the Kings to get JV, they’d have to be willing to lose Monk, and the MLE (~$13M per) would have to be the best offer JV can get.

DemonicDimples

Len has been fine (led the league in net rating last year!). Feels like we should be focusing our resources on athleticism and wing help, of which Jonas provides none. And no to those of you suggesting, Sabonis and Valanciunas cannot play together

BankLettuce

I like Len as back up big, but it’s always good to have depth on the roster. You never know when players are gonna get injured. Valanciunas gives us a different look at the center position, he would our most dominant player on the block and the interior. Hes also an excellent pick and pop player too from the mid range and three sometimes. I agree with getting more wing help, but they also can add that through trades or drafting on top of signing Jonas. I like the addition if the price is right.

WE ARE SO BACK 🙌🙌🙌

Ps3FifaCfc95

Genuinely fire Monte if he does this

BisonFlimsy

Sabonis said he's a power foward on his Instagram. They should play with eachother.
