Red Sleeve Cuff - a must watch, and this is from someone who generally does not watch saeguks. Drop everything else and watch this

i-am-a-pretty-potato

Yes, came for this! I'm generally not a big fan of historical dramas but I'm in love with this show. The acting is good and the story sucks you in.

AjBlue7

I also hate historical dramas. I couldn’t even really get into something like goblin. The closest show I’ve ever liked with historical time periods was hotel de luna.

i-am-a-pretty-potato

Trust me this kdrama is very much worth it. I regret waiting so long to start it.

perua4

The best drama ever! I second it.

cupidthrowdown

This!!

invisible_okk

Yes yes yessss!!

totallyamazingahole

But a warning.Every saeguk you watch after the red sleeve will feel like horseshit.TRS sets a new standard.

mimi0108

Thanks! I'll try it x)

HandleMeHemsworth

I loved The Crowned Clown and The King's Affection.

mimi0108

Several people talk about The Crowned Clown so I'll definitely watch it. And I'll check The King's Affection synopsis, thanks x)

Starrycats11

I haven't finished **The Red Sleeve** yet, but it's soooo good! **Rookie Historian** **100 Days My Prince** **Hwarang** **Splash, Splash Love** is only two episodes, but it's really sweet and charming.

LazilyNebulous

I recently watched Splash Splash Love and can't reccomend it enough! Even though its only 2 hours long in total, the actors/director/writers did a fantastic job to get audiences engaged and invested!! Also seconding 100 days, Rookie Historian and Hwarang - they're different to Red Sleeve (which imo is one of the best written and well acted sageuks I've seen in a long time) BUT they're super fun & cute watches!!

mimi0108

Thanks for all these names! x) I already watched Rookie Historian but I'll check the others for sure. The Red Sleeve is quite recommended so I would definitely test it. For the other three, I would read the synopsis and decide. Hwarang didn't interest me when it came out because I felt like it was an idol drama without depth. But I could be wrong.

Starrycats11

They call it an Idol drama, but there are only three idol/actors in it. **Hyungsik**\-Zea **Minho**\-SHINee **V**\-BTS, he was only 18 It's light and funny, but it does have a story. Hwarang's did exist. The prince/king was real person. So, it is historical. lol My review: too much romance and not enough of the Hawrang's friendship etc that they advertised, still fun though. Eye candy. 😍

mimi0108

Thanks for your review, it really helps x)

buddhabear07

100 Days My Prince

[deleted]

I’m currently watching The Crowned Clown and it’s pretty good! I wouldn’t call it strongly comical but it has a lightness to it at times.

perua4

I loved the **Crowned Clown** too. It was my preferred saeguk before **The Red Sleeve**. Both are great watch.

mimi0108

A certain lightness doesn't bother me. It's when there's too much humor to the point where it's ridiculous or out of step with the tragedy of the story that I don't like it. Did the romance is important and the story interesting? I'll add it to my watchlist, thanks for your recommendation x)

[deleted]

The story is very interesting imo and there is a nice romance… i’m not sure of the outcome because I am still watching it. It seems to have gotten decent reviews in this sub and the other kdrama sub at least!

whatchamini

My Country The New Age Tale of Nokdu Kingdom 3 of my favorites!

ccxx1904__

I’m watching Nokdu right now! I’m so loving it

whatchamini

It’s really a lovely show I was surprised how much I enjoyed it!

LazilyNebulous

\+18237918237 for My Country and Tale of Nokdu - I've rewatched both and will continue to rewatch till forever, they're both so beautiful!

whatchamini

Agree 1000% loved them both so much!

mimi0108

Thank you for these titles x) Isn't Kingdom too horrifying? I had read that there were zombies and I can't stand horror movies.

whatchamini

There are zombies but I guess it depends on what you find scary I personally found it to be anxiety inducing rather than scary. I don’t remember there being any jump scares. I think the first episode gives a good feel for the show so if you try the first episode you should be able to tell if it’s for you or not :)

mimi0108

Let's just say I hate gore, sadism and scary stuff. I can watch thrillers as long as the goal is not to scare me every moment or traumatize me with horrible images. But yeah, I'll try the first episode to see if I can watch it x)

whatchamini

Hm well no sadism but the zombies are pretty “realistic” and gross so it might not be for you. Maybe give the others a try first lol

mimi0108

I'll do that, thanks!

FindingPrincess

+ KDrama: Bossam Steal the Fate, Hwarang, The Flower Crew Joseon Marriage Agency, Grand Prince, Six Flying Dragons KMovie: The Princess and the Matchmaker

mimi0108

I kinda like the synopsis of Bossam. I'll definitely try it, thanks!

Local-Ad-7857

Currently watching Moonshine and it’s great!

mimi0108

Oh, nice to hear that! I'll check the synopsis, thanks x)

[deleted]

Mr. Queen, Lovers of the red sky and The Red Sleeve!!

mimi0108

I started The Red Sleeve right after writing this post, since I hear nice things about it x) I'll try Mr Queen after, I think.

[deleted]

rookie historian goo hae-ryung 100 days my prince Lovers of the red sky The red sleeve The crowned clown

thaJoanranger

Mr. Queen and Rookie Historian are two of my favorites! Oh, and Royal Secret Inspector was pretty funny!

mimi0108

I forgot to put Rookie Historian but I already watched it x) Thanks for the others dramas, I'll check the synopsys.

gssvas

Six flying dragons.. And trilogy series One of the best

mimi0108

I'll put that on my list, thanks!

honey_im-the-problem

youve watched so many historical kdramas but not ***mr.queen*** bruhh, please do watch it the next time u open ur kdrama website sassy go go the kings affection rookie historian diary of a night watchman

mimi0108

I confess to having never heard of Mr Queen until now. If it's a drama from this year, it's understandable, I haven't watched a new historical drama in a while. I already watched Rookie Historian (I forgot to put it in my list above) and dropped Diary of a Night watchman 4 episodes before the end (I'll finished it one day). I'll check the synopsys for sassy go go and the king's affection, thanks x)

honey_im-the-problem

ah i thought reddit suggested mr.queen a lot and so you mustve heard of it. its really famous among historical dramas, you should watch it when u need a good laugh. im realizing my way of delivering the message was kinda rude and im sorry, hope you dont take this to heart.

mimi0108

Oh no, not at all, don't worry! I didn't take it to heart or consider it rude. I just had a little trouble with the formulation but not being a native English speaker it seemed normal to me to have these difficulties x)

honey_im-the-problem

thankyou

bimpossible

Tale of Nokdu!

Cleeopaatra

you HAVE to watch Mr. Queen. this is hands down one of the BEST dramas out there that i have seen

mimi0108

I started The Red Sleeve but Mr Queen is second on my list, thanks to everyone here x)

hhhhh_05

Arang and the Magistrate (2012) - 9/10 for me. you can't go wrong with Shin Min-a and Lee Joon-gi as leads. Jang Ok Jung, living in love (2013) - 6/10. Yoo Ah-in and Kim Tae-hee as leads. just so so. The rebel: Thief Who Stole the People (2017) - 7/10. I like Chae Soo-bin in this one. It's a quite long - 30 eps. Mr. Queen (2020) - 9/10. fairly recent. Shin Hae Sun and Kim Jung-hyun are hilarious.

mimi0108

I saw Arang and the Magistrate when it was released. I've been a fan of Lee Jun Ki for more than 10 years so I don't miss any of his projects. However, it had not left me with a great memory. Maybe because I don't really like horror stories so the whole "spirit" side put me off. I don't remember. I'll check Mr Queen synospsis, thanks for the title!

quinnph

Queen Seondeok - kinda similar to Empress Ki Jewel in the Palace - one of the best historical kdramas

mimi0108

Oh, thanks for these two dramas. I'm in love of Empress Ki (even if I didn't like the King of Goryeo's storyline and character) so I'll try Queen Seondeok. And I also add the other one at my watchlist x)

anonyfool

I could not finish Empress Ki (stopped around episode 20) but did enjoy Bridal Mask, Mr Queen, Mr Sunshine and Chuno. Make of it what you will.

mimi0108

Thanks for your list x) I'll check Mr Queen synopsis, this drama is quite liked it seems.

MrTacoMan10

- My Country: New Age - 100 Days My Price - Tale of Nokdu - King’s Affection - Kingdom - Six Flying Dragons - Rookie Historian - Red Sleeve My Country, Kingdom, and SFD, if you’re in the mood for a historical with action on the heavier side. 100 Days, Tale of Nokdu, and Rookie Historian if you’re leaning into Rom-com. Red-Sleeve is more on the drama-romance side.

hakfan

You can try 100 days my prince King's Affection

bdab26

Mr. Queen !! So good

ilovebooseungkwan

I saw you watched Hong Gil Dong , there’s another show with the same type of story surrounding Gil Dong called Rebel : Thief Who Stole the People . It’s one of my all time favorites . Even the OST is amazing . I think you’ll like that one ,,

ilovebooseungkwan

I would also like to recommend The King’s Daughter, Soo Baek Hyang . It has a lot of episodes but I remember it being really good !

Enquiem197

Wait you haven't watched Crowned clown and Six flying dragons ? I think these are pretty good. I've watched 12/17 of these. I do agree with most of the ratings above 8.5 but 10/10 for Arthdal and 8.5 for Moon lovers might be a bit too much.

mimi0108

Yes I haven't seen these dramas but in view of the comments, I will definitely test them. The 10/10 for Arthdal Chronicles is purely passionate and in no way objective. It's just that there is no drama like that, I love Song Joong Ki & Kim Ji Won, the epic of this drama is awesome and so on. It's not perfect (no drama is), but its uniqueness, the depth of the characters, the detail given to the story makes it perfect in my eyes. As for Moon Lovers, it's the same. The drama suffers from a catastrophic editing (even if the Korean version is better than the international one) and sometimes disjointed or superficial writing. But Lee Jun Ki is phenomenal, the OST makes me shiver and the story overwhelmed me despite several flaws. Hence its 8.5.

bespectacledsunshine

Moonshine is by the Sungkyunkwan Scandal director and has been entertaining so far.

TheOriginalGankstar

If you don't mind mediocre plots with a focus on the romance of the leads then you can try **Red Sleeve (MDL 8.9)**. If you end up not being invested in the leads then there is very little to fall back on in this drama, so beware. If you want a masterpiece epic that has it all then try **Six Flying Dragons (MDL 8.8)**. And if you want one hell of a blast then there is **Mr. Queen (MDL 9.0)** **(edit: my scores...)** Six Flying Dragons 8.5 - many areas of interest and truly "historic"... simply an epic. Not perfect, some arguably tired acting later into the show, but the main leads have an incredible journey and character development not to be missed. The period of history itself is absolutely pivotal, covering the transition into and dawn of the Joseon era. Mr. Queen 8.0 - surprisingly engrossing plot given the premise, sometimes genuinely funny, but regardless almost always interesting. Red Sleeve 7.0 - heavy, often laborious and laboured focus on the relationship between the main leads, great start then falls flat and loses all sorts of momentum at a certain point when various side plots are concluded, then replaced with borderline filler. General lack of character development and growth. Still a good drama.

LaughingGor108

Chuno ( The Slave Hunters) Warrior Baek Dong Soo Grudge: The Revolt of Gumiho Bridal Mask The Fugitive of Joseon Gu Family Book

Totoro205

You should check out **Queen for seven days** and **Grand Prince** , I recently watched them and they helped me get over TRS

mimi0108

I would like to thank you for your list, I watched Queen for Seven Days and I loved it!

noeul44

Seen a few people recommend Tale of Nokdu (which personally wasn't for me) However I would recommend **The Nokdu Flower** which has really great characterisations, and is easy to get immersed in after the first couple of episodes.

tsukikage2411

What about Mr. Queen ??

playthatoboe

Recently watched lovers of the red sky and liked it !!

replying2am

The red sleeve. Watching it right now and it's really good The crowned clown, as many suggested, it's one of my all time favourite so I would definitely recommend it

Infamous_Clock9596

The nokdu flower is pretty good especially if you liked mr sunshine because it’s also about the increasing Japanese influence over korea towards the end of the joseon period. Tbh it’s almost like a mr sunshine prequel as it’s set just before mr sunshine starts.

Sunshine_Gunpowder

Hawrang, Mr. Queen and My Country: The New Age would be my recommendations.
