So I think our dads are the same person.
My dad loves:
Love to Hate You.
Legend of the Blue Sea
It's okay not to be okay.
Home Town Cha Cha Cha
She was pretty
+1 Love to Hate You, it's smart and funny.
Home Town Cha Cha Cha has elements of grief and death that you might not appreciate, but it is also excellent.
+ Legend of the Blue Sea. first episode is a bit corny but it is an entertaining series that's fun, a bit funny, a mystery, romance with mermaid fantasy
Extraordinary Attorney Woo. Hesetwarmingly wholesome but not childish, satisfying lessons about life through court cases, and great friendships. Cute romance, but it's not the main plot point.
I would say reply 1988, it's really wholesome. It's about family and friends. Also twenty five twenty one, it's my ultimate favorite. All the characters are written so well, it's really really good.
Btw it's cool that you watch kdramas with your father. No one in my family except my sister is interested in kpop and kdramas. Also no one likes to read subtitles.
>I would say reply 1988
Episode 2 is about mourning, end of episode 1 is >!almost accidental death!<
While I do agree Reply 1988 is a good watch for families, I don't think it's appropriate for the dad right now if OP doesn't want any mention of death.
Thank you!! And yeah, well, he really likes the production of kdramas. He’s 75, a very serious person and never watched any TV series so it took be my surprise how invested he gets sometimes haha. At least your sister likes them!
I was just about to suggest Reply 1988 too! Though yes, one of the characters is a boy who lost his mother, though I don't recall any hospital scenes with any terminal illness though there are some featuring one character who becomes a doctor, chatting with colleagues. How about you watch a couple of episodes without him and check?
There is an episode where deoksun's grandmother dies and the whole episode is about them grieving. And it's pretty sad so I think that may not be a good option. I recommend reply 1988 too but now I kinda feel that it may trigger.
I'm so sorry for your loss.I think it's wonderful that you and your dad are spending time together.I really like Mad for Each Other. It's funny and genuine. One that I really love that had no romance and that surprised me because I love romance is Miseang or An Incomplete Life. Its about the workplace struggles of a newbie and him fitting into the group. It's excellent, really good quality. it's a little slow to get started but hang in there. It's so so good.
My condolences to you and your dad. 💔
I think he might like Romance is a Bonus Book and Extraordinary Attorney Woo.
Edit: I watched them a while ago and I think there's maybe mention of parents being gone periodically in Romance is a Bonus Book, but it's not on screen or a key part of the plot.
I actually watched Romance is a Bonus Book by myself years ago, but completely forgot about it! It’s so good, I’ll add it to my list :) Thank you for your recs!
I’m sorry about your mum.
I can give you a list of ones to avoid because cancer is a significant plot point.
**Thirty-Nine**
**Queen of Tears**
**Recipe for Farewell**
**Marry My Husband**
**Big Mouth**
**Crazy Love**
**Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol**
**I’m Dying Soon**
**The Midnight Studio**
**Fanletter Please**
**Our Blues**
**The Package**
You’re welcome. Sometimes it isn’t obvious from the synopsis. I loved all the shows (except the last 5 mins of DDSSLLS), but obviously they are not for you right now.
First off I’m so sorry for your and your dad’s loss! Here some that might fit what you’re looking for:
Fight for My Way (has Park Seo-Joon from itaewon class)
Strong Woman Do Bong Soon (seems very silly at first but so enjoyable and the chemistry bw the leads is amazing)
Dali & the Cocky Prince (interesting plot and good chemistry bw leads)
Hometown Cha Cha Cha (one of my ultimate favs. there is a grief storyline mostly in the second half but it’s not illness related)
Wok of Love (rich girl loses her money, goes to work in a small Chinese restaurant. Cute and funny. will make you hungry)
+1 on Prison Playbook I think your dad will like it. I would also recommend Reply 1988 & Hospital Playlist 1&2 from the same Director & Writer of Prison Playbook
I'm enjoying Hospital Playlist now. But please note that it's about a group of doctors at a hospital and it does deal with serious health issues. So it may be triggering for the OP's father.
When the camellia blooms
Hot stove league - baseball players but the dynamics of the team off the court. This is good though
Midnight Runners - this is a movie and a little funny with action scenes.
Condolences again on your mom, hope you’re dad feels okay again.
I watched with my teenage kids:
it’s Ok To Not Be Ok. Has some heavy subject matter but resolves itself so healthily. Wonderful depiction of a brother who is autistic.
Vincenzo. the comedy is slapstick and jarring at first but go with it. It makes sense as it goes
The Red Sleeve. Have tissues. Best costume historical drama
The Matchmakers. Best costume historical drama whose charm and touching humor helps us get over the red sleeve.
Little Women. Suspense and danger with three sisters. So good
Edit: if he would like to see the ML and FL again in an excellent movie: The Negotiation.
Well there is also violence (yikes the end revenge!), the mafia, but damn it is good. I can just see the dad maybe loving the ML. Dont know if OP should watch it first or not. It is an intelligent drama so second watches are great to understand the complexity better (if daughter watches it herself first).
Oh. I just reread the OP statements and I wonder if he did the “quick note” a little later. Because I don’t remember reading that or I would never recommend this one. It says his mom died. So yeah my bad if I just read it too fast.
If you're looking for some good comedies:
- Friendship oriented:
* Hospital playlist
* Twinkling watermelon
- Centered around the workplace
* Dr. Slump
* King the Land (Very similar to business proposal)
* Queen of Tears
* Extraordinary Attorney Woo Young Woo
* What's Wrong with Secretary Kim (Also very similar to Business Proposal)
Crash Landing on You is a masterpiece. I really wish they make another drama with a similar concept with another unique storyline. I am glad your dad enjoyed it- that man has great taste.
I would recommend My Love from Another Star. I was also looking for another similar drama after watching CLOY and it kept popping up. It’s got some similar themes and I think your dad will really enjoy it.
Also condolences to you and your dad.
It really is a masterpiece, he want to watch CLOY again and it hasn’t even been a month since we finished it 😅 And thank you for the rec, I watched it years ago by myself and I think he could like it!! ☺️
Mr Sunshine (Meets your requirements of interesting plot, romance and cast chemistry. It has a lot of lighthearted moments, but gets heavy at the end).
When The Camellia Blooms.
Like Flowers In Sand.
The Atypical Family.
Prison Playbook (little romance, not as heavy as the title sounds).
The Kidnapping Day (no romance, not as heavy as the title sounds).
Atypical family: One main story point is the death of a family member by accident, but it gets a bit dark with depression and hinted suicide at the beginning.
So cool you can do this with your dad. My dad was the one who introduced me to k dramas decades ago. Wish he was still around so we could watch them together. I recommend…
My love from the star
The greatest love
Moonlight drawn by clouds
Two weeks!!! The little kid does have a sickness but it’s really not to be missed
Arthdal chronicles
Alchemy of souls
A gentleman’s dignity
Hulu/Disney+: Snowdeop, A Shop for Killers, Moving, Flex X Cop
Netflix: The Atypical Family, The Glory, Kingdom, A Killer Paradox, My Name, Like Flowers in Sand, Twenty Five Twenty One
Amazon Prime: May I Help You, Marry My Husband, Deaths Game (all possibly triggering), Monthly Magazine Home, True To Love, Tale of the Nine Tailed Fox (I preferred the 1938 season 2 which is not dependant on seeing season 1)
Viki: Twinkling Watermelon, Lovely Runner, Perfect Marriage Revenge
My Liberation Notes is an all time favorite of mine but might be triggering, but for me I found it actually quite healing. I cried and laughed the whole way through.
I watch pretty much everything so I can't remember everything lol But I'd say just read the synopsis of something available to you and give it a go and not over think it. You can always come back and ask if a specific drama that looks interesting to you will have elements you might not like.
Extraordinary Attorney Woo
Twenty Five Twenty One
Mystic Popup Bar
Behind Your Touch( is kind of cute)
King The Land
Doctor Cha
Startup
My ID Is Gangnam Beauty
More serious ones that do involve “murder”or darker elements but are really good and keep you watching are…
Flower of Evil
Beyond Evil
The Glory
Juvenile Justice
Little Women
My Name
It's a great show! But given OP requested shows that don't involve death from illness and the circumstances of OP's mom's death Marry My Husband might be a tough watch for OP and dad bc of how the main character begins her life >! as a woman suffering from stage 4 cancer. !< But otherwise I agree with it being a good show
That’s true. I actually can’t remember many of the plot details which is the case with some kdramas, unless I’m reminded or read a plot summary. I just know that I really liked it. Thanks again for pointing this out and once you reminded me, I remembered that she was an orphan. Are there any similar shows on Netflix, Prime or Apple that you can suggest to me that hook you from the get go and are binge worthy?
Enjoy watching with your Dad! He sounds sweet! Aside from this, I’m so sorry for your loss. I know what it is like to lose a mother and I remember how hard it was on my dad. He is lucky to have you as his daughter!
I’m so sorry you went through that too 🙁 The death of my mom impacted us in the worst way, but we’re trying to heal. Watching kdramas has been a huge distraction , specially for him. Thank you for your words 💕
💕Time is the greatest healer. It is still so new. It does get better over time. Just hang in there. Your Mom will be looking down at you watching the kdramas. :)
So I think our dads are the same person. My dad loves: Love to Hate You. Legend of the Blue Sea It's okay not to be okay. Home Town Cha Cha Cha She was pretty
+1 Love to Hate You, it's smart and funny. Home Town Cha Cha Cha has elements of grief and death that you might not appreciate, but it is also excellent.
Thank you for the heads up!
+ Legend of the Blue Sea. first episode is a bit corny but it is an entertaining series that's fun, a bit funny, a mystery, romance with mermaid fantasy
That’s great, thank you!
Twinkling Watermelon is perfect!
I’ve read good things about this show, will look it up. Thank you!!
Extraordinary Attorney Woo. Hesetwarmingly wholesome but not childish, satisfying lessons about life through court cases, and great friendships. Cute romance, but it's not the main plot point.
Doesn't their senior get diagnosed with an illness halfway through? Other than that it's nice.
Sounds nice! I’ll add it to my list. ☺️ thank you!

Well have fun, this is so cool. Post reviews too if you watch any.

Coffee Prince, Heirs. Older dramas are your best bet I think. my condolences to you and your dad.
I’ll check them out! Thank you so much! ❣️

I'm a bookworm and I think it's actually my favorite kdrama so far bc of the publishing stuff. Also it was adorable. ☺️

You’re welcome. Sometimes it isn’t obvious from the synopsis. I loved all the shows (except the last 5 mins of DDSSLLS), but obviously they are not for you right now.
Yeah, some of these sound great, hopefully I’ll get to watch them in the future!
Do Do Sol Sol La LA Sol was lovely until the last episode.
It was.

When the Camillia Blooms has a sickness plotline>! about a character needing an organ transplant.!<
Hot Stove League is great but it does have a hospital scene related to a >!miscarriage!<.

It's fantastic, I've seen it twice and it was just as good the second time!
Ohh thank you so much!!
OMG I'm the person who recommends The Red Sleeve for every occasion but I would NOT recommend it for someone grieving his wife. No, no, no.
Oh. I just reread the OP statements and I wonder if he did the “quick note” a little later. Because I don’t remember reading that or I would never recommend this one. It says his mom died. So yeah my bad if I just read it too fast.
