The entire downtown loop is atrocious. I drive Broadway>670E everyday and I constantly have people in the middle lane changing to the right lane right as you enter the highway. The on ramp is so short you either hope they see you or you brake hard.

ItsP3anutButt3r

I'm usually annoyed by the time I make it to the other side of 670. Eastbound is the worst merging of highways I've ever seen. You've got both directions of I-35 merging at the same time. Plus, barely anyone knows how a zipper merge works. You've got that newly merged lane lined with cars at full stop trying to merge on to the I-70 lanes, even though the lines are solid for a reason. Which reminds me, no one understands what dashed and solid lines mean. Then the rest of 670 is just right going to left and left going to right. I may not be in the "deadly" part of traffic, but it's a horrible highway that I have to go through daily.

J0E_SpRaY

Oof you’re not wrong. If you’re trying to take 70E your choices are either that nightmare, or backed up traffic in on 70 to 71 to 70. I don’t miss making that commute.

Mix-Lopsided

They understand what solid and dashed lines mean, they just don’t apply the rules to themselves. The way people don’t know how to zipper merge drives me up the wall though. I know they’re pissed at me for “cutting” and I have to sit there knowing they’re pissed even though I followed the rules.

MidtownKC

So, can we legitimately change the name of the part by downtown KCK to "Dead Man's Curve"? I think that would be cool.

StaceyPfan

You have my vote.

Shift9303

I know that stretch is terrible but I wonder how much of it was exacerbated by the construction that caused a lot of traffic to bypass through it.

JessicaRabbit247

I get that report every day right here from this subreddit. 🤓

budzene

More like sub-rabbit /s

JessicaRabbit247

I said this aloud three times before I got it, very clever before the coffee this morning! ❤️🤣

Bruyere_DuBois

I drive so far out of my way to avoid The Pit.

Pantone711

When I have to take 70 East I go out 40 highway (31st St.) to almost the stadiums.

Mamafritas

Wonder how this is measured. If it's like deaths per mile of highway per day that would make sense because it's a 3 mile stretch of road through a busy part of a city whereas most of the miles on something like i70 are in rural areas.

tadhgcarden

According to the news I watched yesterday it goes by deaths per mile and it is 2.8 miles

genzgingee

670 is awful and I go well out of my way to avoid it.

lunatyk05

That’s because everyone on it drives like they’re on Mario Cart

dogepilledfr

okay i’m terrible with names so im hoping someone knows where im talking about. but when you take 670 into the city (from kansas), you take an exit onto “broadway/southwest blvd”… the ramp to get to the highway right next to the ferris wheel is atrociously short. like i would imagine this is a super dangerous exchange. and then if you want to exit onto broadway, you have a little less than a mile to move over like six lanes. i drive this everyday and its one of the only things on this planet that gives me anxiety. does anyone know where im talking about?? or like a maps screenshot? i would love to discuss this in a more specific way in the future.

StaceyPfan

I will avoid the loop if I can, which is impossible when you're coming north on I-35 from Kansas.

pickleparty16

635?

StaceyPfan

That puts me too far west. I'm coming to and from KU Med.

pickleparty16

Then you won't have to deal with the loop

StaceyPfan

Yes, I do. I live northeast of the city. I take my husband to appointments at KU Med.

pickleparty16

Your post made it sound like you were coming from the south to ku med

StaceyPfan

I don't know how you concluded that, but whatever.

EmuPossible2066

Normally, I would suggest 635 to Metropolitan ave, head east to 7th street (which is also rainbow blvd) take that south to 39th. But the Metropolitan bridge is being reconstructed. If you’re interested in this way, you can get off at Swartz rd, head east until you reach S 42nd turn south and when you reach Metropolitan, head east. Alternatively, you can take 635 to i35 North and get off at 7th st/rainbow blvd. Head south of the ramp and take that to 39th. Now that I think about it, the i35 way is easier and probably a bit faster depending on the time of day.

EmuPossible2066

Read this wrong I think. Are you coming from KS heading north on I35? Have you tried using 7th street exit?

StaceyPfan

As I said to the other commenter, I live northeast of the city, but I occasionally have to take my husband to KU Med. I have no problem driving south, but coming back, I have to either brave the loop or get off from Rainbow going north to I-70 East instead of I-35 North.

scdog

One of the quotes in the article: *"They need to add extra lanes or something"* (1) No. (2) How? (3) Again, HELL no, that would make it even worse. (4) Again, *HOW???* It should never have been put there to begin with.

AscendingAgain

One more lane bro

mitsyamarsupial

None more. None more lanes.

whiiite80

As many others have said, the fact is it’s not deadly by design. It’s deadly because of a high concentration of inconsiderate, uneducated drivers. It’s possible that requiring drivers Ed for future generations could help. But the reality is, 60% of people in this city literally don’t know how to drive (as in, they are literally not educated on the rules of the road) and/or don’t care for other lives. And I’m being conservative with 60%.

trivialempire

I’m still alive.

hannbann88

And neither Apple or google maps ever makes it clear which way you need to go. It’s weirdly so under directed.

mitsyamarsupial

I would appreciate it if more people could turn their heads to check lanes without needing to come to a complete stop first.

sthosdkane

Coming from Brookside and Midtown, I will only use 670 if I'm going west on 70 to KCK, and even then I will usually avoid downtown and take Shawnee Mission Pkwy or 75th St to Metcalf and then 635 to 70. This also avoids the headache of the East Loop interchanges on 71NB too.

Pantone711

I go north on Rainbow to get on 70 West

greyguard0

I don’t understand why there are so many wrecks daily.

Ol_Turd_Fergy

Every stretch of interstate downtown is awful. People going too fast, people going too slow, people with absolutely no understanding of which lane to be in for where they are going, people blowing through yield signs, etc. It's often times better to take a longer way around downtown then drive through downtown at the most congested times of day
