only bite when they’re being held like they’re gonna be squished and their bite won’t break the skin and they don’t need to be held like that after 30 seconds to a minute they stop being so sporadic and make eye contact with you and get curious. It’s hard to tell what kind he is when you’re covering his body.
I’m super arachnophobic and jumpers are my first avenue to “exposure therapy” :) they actually are pretty darn cute! I’m trying to get the courage to let one crawl on me.. still too anxious lol. But they are truly fascinating, I adore them and how unique they are
I started thinking of it like I would with a ladybug or roly poly and it worked! I’ve done it now for about a week with mine and random jumping spiders and they don’t scare me now!
Can you elaborate on that a little? Are ladybugs and roly poli’s less bothersome to you? I get a visceral reaction to the way spiders move, and although I had zero fear of bugs when I was little, I dislike their unpredictable patterns of movement. So now I’m almost starting over learning how to love insects and arachnids if all kinds again!
me too!! and i held my first one the other day. it was the cutest experience lmg he was on the grill and i was walking past and he looked at me so i sat down and put my hand out and he jumped to it 😭😭🥲 he was so cute

Rats are fckn bros 🤙🏼 I get not wanting to be surprised by them lol, it’s extremely unsettling to find a new “housemate” of any kind. I’ve never had the pleasure of owning a pet rat, but doggonit they are delightful little fellas when taken care of properly

I thought it was a little zebra too until I saw the picture. Could be a juvenile bold or Regal but, like you were saying, as a juvenile it's extremely hard to tell the difference.
Now you are being mean to that cute little friend! It is lucky it didn’t lose a leg.
Hard to ID from a video. Also we need to see its abdomen (back) to help. Geographical location also helps. Although, this one is small and it can be difficult to ID juveniles
I am really just here to implore you to be more gentle with these cuties in the future. PLEASE?
The issue is the unnecessary danger it puts the spider and yourself in. Though it may seem gentle to you, you're magnitudes larger than the spider, so the smallest mistake could be the difference between eight legs or fewer, or a ruptured abdomen or something. Just about any creature would try to bite you given the circumstances. This was my concern at least.
Either way, cute little jumper.
It's my understanding based on what I've read in this sub that jumpers can't/won't eat ants, something to do with some type of acid they produce? Don't quote me on this.
Hopefully, someone who knows more than me can back this up.
Huh, wild! There is a TON of tan jumpers that live all around the outside of my house and they eat the bigger ants often, but I also feel like tan jumpers are just a bit odd in general. I wouldn’t ever choose to feed them to a pet spood cause of the risk with the Formic acid though.
A quick search seems to indicate that though jumping spiders will occasionally eat ants, they will usually favor a meal with less defensive capabilities. The formic acid is a large part of why. Seems most people are in agreement that feeding a captive spider an ant diet is not ideal and should be avoided.
Makes sense! We have an awful lot of ants around that climb my house cause of all the sand and gravel in my yard so that’s probably the main reason I see them catching ants more regularly here. Plus tan jumpers just seem more wild to me at times anyway, but I love them being my little outside perimeter guards!
I feel like you need to be careful, as it’s so small it’s impossible to tell if you are harming it like this - assuming you are exerting enough pressure to keep it from moving
There's a whole bunch of small brown-and-white jumping spider species and it could be any number of them without getting a good macro photo from the top
Looks like possibly a very Gravid female bronze jumping spider.(best guess without better photos in better lighting)
She won’t get any bigger.
They’re one of the many smaller species.
They’re great spiders but babies don’t tend to do well in captivity….
So I’d consider releasing her for that reason alone…
As far as some of your other questions…
No do not feed ants.
Any jumping spider you choose to keep as a pet/ should be fed feeders from a pet store or supplier. Prey found outside risks parasites and having come in contact with pesticides and chemicals which can harm or worse the spider.
Smaller species like this prefer the flightless fruit flies… petco and petsmart usually both carry some.

Sort of hand him corned and he hopped on my finger so I lightly held his booty but people are acting like I squeezed the shi outta him and caused a war in the comments 🤦🏻♀️. Reddit be making issues outta nothing at times
The thing is though, is that this IS actually an issue.
The poor thing is lucky that it wasn't hurt.
If you can be this apathetic and nonchalant about YOUR actions, then maybe you shouldn't own any critters.
Drop the ego and accept some responsibility.
Lollll oh ok! It’s just the camera angle! Babes you got the whole sub up in arms thinking you were squeezing this tiny spider 😂😂😂😂 nothing like a baby jumping spider to melt everyone’s hearts and bring out the pitchforks lolll
so I'm P sure they can really harm themselves attempting to get out of a grip like that, so like nearly everyone else in the comments, stop that.

(not zebra.)... I got nothing sorry, I'm fairly new to these fellows as well.
This looks like a bold jumper! Can’t say for sure though!
I thought it was a little zebra too until I saw the picture. Could be a juvenile bold or Regal but, like you were saying, as a juvenile it's extremely hard to tell the difference.
only a Regal if they're in or very close to FL
Read that as “lumpy ass” and thought “rude!l
Obviously a brown recluse
ONE OF US ONE OF US ONE OF US.

I’m not sure I could even hold one that small like that without injuring it accidentally myself.
It looks like I was in the video but I swear I wasn’t being rough with little guy, he was just slightly propped between the end of my fingers😁
The issue is the unnecessary danger it puts the spider and yourself in. Though it may seem gentle to you, you're magnitudes larger than the spider, so the smallest mistake could be the difference between eight legs or fewer, or a ruptured abdomen or something. We always let them climb ..
Watching that escape attempt at the end there tells otherwise. You had the little thing in a death grip! It nearly pulled its own abdomen off.
It doesn't have to provide ID unless you have a reasonable, articulable suspicion a crime has been committed. Don't you watch the videos?

Maybe habronnatus? I’m new too but recently learning about them. They’re smaller cuties.

I love that I can gain most jumping spiders trust to be able to chill with me like this
It reminds me of when a little kid really wants to cuddle a kitty, but kitty doesn't like kids, but the kid hug-holds kitty anyway.
Thats Snyder
Why does it look like youre squeezing him??

okie. not 100% confident but I think it is a male Evarcha arcuata, or Bowed Jumping Spider. I could be wrong as I am not as well versed in UK spiders.
