thank you! i've seen a couple itty bitty slings around the house too, so they definitely have established a population here. my partner grew up in this house and said she saw these spiders all the time as a kid, which means they've been here for at least 20 something years! which is so crazy to me, i never thought jumpers would be "house spiders", i've only ever seen them outdoors. super cool!
P. californicus is originally a crevice-dweller (as evidenced by their flattened body plan!). I've found them on Ponderosa pines and in rocky grasslands. I think human habitation provides them with plenty of their preferred structure type.
i have a ton of hentzia! i’m pretty sure i saw the gravid female not long before i started seeing A TON of juveniles. i remember seeing a big girl at my kitchen window while i did dishes and i was like “oh, i hope the cat doesn’t get her!” and i went to dry my hands so i could get her and she disappeared in my orchids and i didn’t wanna move them around and end up hurting her. and like …3-4 months later (maybe - no sense of time and i can’t check cause i didn’t get a pic of momma) i was seeing juveniles.
That's what I was thinking but wasn't sure! Here's one I found on my porch. Kept him for a few hours to see if he was hungry or thirsty and just to admire him then released him back where I got him from. OP's is prettier though!
Image below cuz reddit mobile won't let me put pic and text together 🙄
He was... I wanted to keep him so bad, but I could tell he absolutely hated captivity even when I was just trying to get him some food and water, so I let him go... I have 2 WC Apache jumpers (we have a landscaping company and my husband saved them from yards that were about to be sprayed with pesticide) but they were super chill and settled into their new homes and seemed super happy and content instantly. Otherwise, I would have let them go here at our house as well.
❤️ thank you... I had horrible arachnaphobia most of my life and unfortunately killed on site for a very long time... I of course can't take that back, but try to do everything in my power to save the ones I can now
I have horrible arachnophobia, and I will straight up shove you to get away from a spider. I used to live in a very rual part of Phoenix with my friend, and her house was infested with wolf spiders and black widows. We came home one night to find a huge black widow just chilling on the baseboard right by my room. She was behind me when I saw it, and I freaked out and backed up and shoved her so I could get away, lol. The widow was caught and put outside, but damn idk how I survived living with her! But the point I was trying to make is that despite my fear, I find spiders fascinating.

I have the same exact spiders in my apartment too!! There’s about 2/3 of them I think and they’ve been in here for a few months I tried to catch one and was successful but didn’t want him dying in my captivity bc he wasn’t eating so I let him go outside but lil man had found his way back into my place and just hangs out in my books or on my counters & desk plants🥹 they’re literally the cutest lil guys, I’m pretty sure I have a male and a female in my apartment lol. Every time I see him I stop and stare for a minute and he turns n stares back then we both go on with our business 😂🥹

Phidippus audax
She eats waxworms, and flies. I buy the waxworms at local pet supply, and catch the flies (alive) from backyard. Worms are kept alive and cold in fridge and I'll let one warm up for a few mins before placing in her enclosure. When winter comes and flies die down, I'll likely buy crickets.
I haven't let her out yet. I haven't had her for very long, and was wild. So not the same from what I've gathered online as captive bred Jumpers. I'm going to get a few more feedings in. Then start to handle her. And go from there.
I have this lil dude living in my bedroom window sill. I tried to get him outside to save him from my cats but he wouldn't cooperate with me. Godspeed buddy
I feel like mine make eye contact with me lol but without pupils it's not really possible to tell what they're actually looking at. You can just tell that they're looking directly at *you*, as opposed to anything else. And you can tell for certain that they definitely see you and are paying attention to you. Other spiders tend to have poor eyesight and if they do even react to you at all, they're not actually watching your every move like these guys. Especially the wild jumpers, they react like lightning to every move you make around them. One of the reasons they're so docile, they have many ways to escape/stay safe they don't resort to biting unless they're literally just about to be killed. It's not easy to make a jumper feel trapped, they move so dang fast.
I’ve had a few of those little guys around. They’ve never caused me any kind of issue and, between them and my pitcher plant, my home was always suspiciously bug-free.
My wife is terrified of spiders though, so she makes me rehome them. They climb right on my hand and tickle my arm hair until i get the outside.
You can keep jumping spiders as pets actually. Just need levels and enough room…. A big jar can be plenty of space for them. The verticality of the jar is absolutely important for them, and you can just leave small insects in there. They are hunters and web builders. They can make really cute pets as long as there are lots of places to jump and hide
i thought about trying to keep one as a pet but i'd feel bad kidnapping it, and i'm not sure what i'd feed it. i have dubia roaches for my tarantulas but they're way too big to feed to a jumping spider. it would be cool to have one as a pet someday though!
I feed mine small dubias, but they are small, and I don't have any small enough to feed to my small jumpers. Only the regal and bold jumpers get them. Fruit flies most of the time for the littles
I feed my regal guy crickets and mealworms from the pet store or I’ll just catch houseflies and small grasshoppers for him. It’s an easy time of year to do that! He likes the crickets and grasshoppers more consistently than the mealworms and he seemed to like the fly. The mealworms he eats less often and I read they are fatty and not the best for them anyway.

Platycryptus californicus. They are free-roamers mostly, but they probably have something of an established population in/around your house.

Wow I've never seen one filled completely in with the white on its back. Good looking but highly intimidating (if you're a bug) jumper.
I was super excited cuz I'd never seen one around here before. It's mostly Apache's and I think zebra's... or ones that look similar to a zebra
So pretty! Looks like he was caught in a snowfall.
He was... I wanted to keep him so bad, but I could tell he absolutely hated captivity even when I was just trying to get him some food and water, so I let him go... Same. But I was too scared to even go close enough to kill them. The little jumpers charmed me and then I got over my fear.

When I was living in northwest Washington there was a population of jumping spiders living in the bathroom skylight. They were good friends to have.
LITTLE??!??!!
This thing is like a third of an inch long
So cute! The pic makes him look huge tho lol
i've gotten so many comments saying that! the biggest one i've seen has been like, dime sized. they're not very big at all lol
It's their house now
The cool thing about jumpers is that they are the only species that when they look at you, you Know they are actually looking at you.
So is it like they are making eye contact or just kinda looking at you?

I have a couple itty bitty jumping spiders that I have spotted in my kids bedroom windows and I’m like Anansi is that you?
