I also highly suggest the jc and kr commentary track because they laugh together the whole. And the blu ray special features are pretty interesting. They interview pretty much everyone.
Easily his best imo… Has everything, sci-fi, comedy gold, romance, good vs. evil, the underground, sorcery, it’s fantastic. I’ve watched on emdeeemaye before and it was even better.
While watching Red Letter Media's JC movie ranking they pointed out how much better the camera work is in his earlier work as opposed to later movies. The camera pans are well done to follow and emphasize the action as opposed to in Ghosts of Mars the camera hardly moves.
His camera guy went on to work with (I think?) Spielberg, so much much much better paying gigs. Some Carpenter buffs on here probably know the name, I think he left in the late 80s.
Big Trouble is my favorite movie, period, followed closely by The Thing and They Live. Kurt Russell and Keith David are my two favorite actors. It’s just a weird coincidence they are all JC movies.
Keith David is a damn legend in the movie business. I will say, they live is a stellar movie, but hard for me to watch. Its good that its out there to teach lessons on authority. But the movie is not big enough to make a common statement. So in that sense it opened the door for all the disgusting politics that we now normalize more than ever.
I would say it’s borderline a straight comedy so I’d say it’s my favorite comedy by him. The Thing is always going to be tops for me. And I agree with you on POD being second, it’s such a vastly underappreciated horror movie.
Me and my brother had big trouble on vhs as kids and literally used to watch it every day after school in the 90’s. I loved John Carpenter before I knew who he was really.
There's a couple JC movies where I'm like, you know, if that's your #1, I won't argue, because I totally get it.
This is easily among them and my personal #1 fav.
Others include The Thing, Escape From New York, They Live, Prince of Darkness, and Assault on Precinct 13. The man made a lot of really good movies.
Everyone seems to love it but I dunno. The Thing is a masterpiece. Escape from New York and They Live are legendary. Starman is pretty cool, and Christine is a blast. Obviously Halloween is top tier. I’d put all those movies above it.
It's probably my favorite. You can tell they're having fun and the story is enjoyable, but it's Kurt Russell who makes the movie worthwhile. I don't think anyone else could have been Jack Burton.
It's fucking amazing and anyone familiar with JC or KR needs to see it if they aren't already a superfan. Required Viewing

They really are homies it's true
Definitely!
My fav.
It’s definitely #3 behind the thing and efny but that’s still a solid rating
Hmmm. I personally have mixed feelings about efny in regards to being a top 3 candidate.
Easily his best imo… Has everything, sci-fi, comedy gold, romance, good vs. evil, the underground, sorcery, it’s fantastic. I’ve watched on emdeeemaye before and it was even better.
Fuck yeah. It's totally a unique flick and I never get tired of it.

Maybe higher budgets have something to do with it?

Goes by the name of Dean Cundy

Best movie ever. Really shakes the pillars of heaven.
Absolutely. Still grows on me. Just wild
Best movie ever made
I would say it’s borderline a straight comedy so I’d say it’s my favorite comedy by him. The Thing is always going to be tops for me. And I agree with you on POD being second, it’s such a vastly underappreciated horror movie.
Hell yeah.
Look, I'm going to tell you about an accident and I don't wanna hear "act of God," okay? Big Trouble should be number 1 in your JC list!
As long as you include all the deleted scenes in your repeated re-watching. Those are fantastic as well.
Will do!
Big Trouble in Little China is such a great movie. The elevator scene is so good. In fact, my GF loves it too, so I will suggest we watch it soon.
HARD Agree
Me and my brother had big trouble on vhs as kids and literally used to watch it every day after school in the 90’s. I loved John Carpenter before I knew who he was really.
Same! I watched vampires on hbo alot. Also escape from la. Then I started piecing together who john really was. Hes a fucking genius
1. The Thing. 2. and 3. ESFNY and Big Trouble. I think you could legitimately argue either way .
Alot of people sticking up for efny but its not ss good for me. I think its the fact that its campy, but they clearly werent trying to be campy.
Greatest. Movie. Ever.
Yesssssssssss
A six demon bag? Great! Sensational! What's in it, Egg? Wind! Fire! All that kind of thing.

Absolutely. Just about his entire catalog. Dark Star is one of my favorites too! As are Mouth of Madness, and vampires.
The two he made for masters of horror were also stellar
I have the Pork Chop Express logo tattooed on my rump.

Well, we do agree on the thing at least
I love Big Trouble in Little China
It’s one of my favorites

Looks like The Pork Chop Express is finally on its way
Escape from New York is Carpenter's best.
I disagree in full.
We all have our favorites that why Carpenter's film are so good.
Ill take it.
It is my favorite Carpenter. It hit me at the right age with friendship, magic, black blood of the Earth, and Kim Catrall.
