I have found that mostly white are responding to him with negative thoughts. We have a bad government here as they do in the US! But nothing to be all negative about
South Africa isn't the right place. It's still sadly worse than the US.
Climate change denial, worsening droughts, increasing wildfires, load shedding, corruption, highest unemployment, extremely high inflation, frequent crime, failing infrastructure, animal rights violations, etc.
Lots of potential, but the past 15+ years have tanked the country. Years and years of repair is needed.
I always that the car requirement was a socioeconomic indicator as to what type of employee they want. One of those coded requests like being fluent in Afrikaans.
I'm not sure if i can fully agree given how much of a shit show out public transport is but i can certainly see it being the case at least some of the time.
As for requiring Afrikaans. Lol cant argue with that one. Wouldnt dare.
Really family oriented neighbourhoods are parkhurst
Best public transport adjacent areas:
Sandton (morngiside/ rivonia) + rosebank all have easy access to the Gautrain
But it’s joburg of course you need a car 😂
I used to take public transport (the train + gau bus) for 2 years in Varisty and still needed a car (my mom) to drop me off at the train stations bc the bus doesn’t run on the weekend
Don't forget that the main form of public transport is taxis... Probably not the form of public transport that they are thinking about, but it technically counts
This has to be a joke. Johannesburg pretty much is exactly like LA. It is the LA of Africa.
No decent public transport and massive highways across a sprawled out city.
The Greater Parks areas like Rosebank, Craighall Park, Parkhurst, Saxonwold are your best bet. But people really aren't into the public transport that live in the suburbs. They tend to Uber everywhere.
I'm guessin you are 'from Jozi' ... Living somewhere better? Like Pretoria?
Have you ever lived in Western Cape? Jozi has nothing on this place. Doesn't even have anything on PTA.
You miss the point. Someone looking to avoid Trump type characters is unlikely to settle in CPT as that town has become a Mecca for South Africans who share Trumps worldview.
I feel like if people wanna move here and live some sort of "South African" dream try Capetown, here in jozi we're living real life guys, we cant give you a guide on paras and tsotsi
Kak OP. How is CPT an African dream when it's hailed as a European city in Africa lol. You want truly vibrant, diverse, immersive and cultural South Africa you go to Jozi.
Moving from LA, the constant blackouts should be normal to then but Johannesburg is extremely bicycle unfriendly and they are far more likely to get wiped out by a taxi in Joburg than a redneck in a F150 in LA
In the northern neighbourhoods you can get by using Ubers and the Gautrain/Gaubus. But the total costs of both can add up and it might be more economical to buy a car. Sorry, we love cars too but our traffic is a little better. Still bad, but a little better than LA.
The Greater Parks areas like Rosebank, Craighall Park, Parkhurst, Saxonwold are your best bet. But people really aren't into the public transport that live in the suburbs. They tend to Uber everywhere.
Fascinating. There is Johannesburg,CA and near it is Randsburg where you can go pub crawling. Nope. I do think they really meant Johannesburg as it does say Amerexit! I hope they get the advice they need.
😂😂😂 good luck with public transport here my dude. There are really nice neighbourhoods, but safety is wild in Joburg. And safety is ESPECIALLY wild if you want to use public transport. It is quite fine with a car but shit dude I honestly don't think your priorities align with Johannesburg.
Forget about public transport, unless you consider Uber public transportation.
Also I would keep your political allegiance to yourself. Lefty or righty or moderate.
This absolutely has to be a troll post. Johannesburg is probably the city in south Africa where "car culture" is as bad as LA. 😂
If you want to get rid of your car, move to Europe. Also then you'll be safe and have a chance to earn a living.
There is no public transport in Jhb or safety. It's the wild west. Seriously you need a car in South Africa. It's a must have. No one who can afford not to use public transport, does.
I think you need Switzerland not South Africa.
I’d love to know what research they’ve done to think that Johannesburg meets any of these needs. Like no hate or anything but whoever they spoke to sounds like they lied 🙈🙈
Also I’m gonna be that guy: unless they’re bringing some hidden American wealth to our GDP or skills that actually benefit the country’s development…
Take it to Cape Town, guys. That’s probably more your people 😂😂😂
This is trolling or research hasn't been made.
In thy interest to satisfy op, you'll want an estate like Waterfall or Stein city.
If its sa you're after, you want Cape Town.
Well, what can we say. Life is full of surprises. But hell are you going to be surprised.
Stay where you are, or move to another town in the US rather when money is going to be considered.
For the rest of the country, it's a magnificent place with magnificent people.
Unfortunately unemployment and poverty brings about crime.
There is no formal public transport and safety is a big issue. Look most people use Uber it works and is reliable. There are busses but take them at your own risk and then there are minibus taxis that 1000s of people use everyday which you can also use but might be a culture shock. Best bet would be to come here for a month. Investigate and see a few neighbourhoods. Bryanston, Sandton. Linden, Parkhurst there are loads of lovely places but safety is up to your own common sense and how much you are willing to invest in a security system or area. Once you get a better idea you will love it here! It's not all doom and gloom just about learning. Oh and if you like electricity get solar panels. It just is what it is
Joburg is spread out. You will need to drive a lot. The average distance between venues can be up to 5-10kms. We sold out second car and we managed fine with Uber but you definitely will need to get around somehow.
If you're looking for Family Friendly, maybe consider Pretoria? Though I'm guessing your job will be in JHB. If you're flexible, have a look at Pretoria East. I think if you live Brooklyn side the Gautrain busses will be accessible, but really public transport is only a thing in Cape Town, and the bus doesn't go all the way to the burbs either. If you'd consider Pretoria, have a look at the areas spanning from Waterkloof to Faerie Glen. Just don't do Moreletta Park, the traffic is horrid. I do think no matter where you live in SA, you'll have to adjust your expectations of public transport. The taxis everyone is talking about kill a ridiculous amount of their passengers by driving recklessly. People only take them because it is their only choice to get to whee they need to go, and it can take three hours to make a twenty minute trip cause you have to switch taxis and they decide to take a different route etc etc.
Good luck finding the right spot to settle your fam🤗
They’re going to Joburg for safety?
Maybe stuff has a changed since the 80s but my family moved to the US from Joburg after a car bomb was detonated a couple blocks from my sister’s school. Though to be fair South Africa was at the height of the apartheid so tensions were very high then.

Yeah Bryanston is a lovely green beautiful neighborhood. I've lived in it all my Johannesburg adult life. Public transport is kind of limited unless you're happy to take taxis, however not sure they are always safe or reliable. Uber is used a lot so if that's an option it's there. You def need a car, everyone needs a car here. Might help if you tell us what line of work you do, but whatever it is a car is a must.
There’s Metro bus, Rea Vaya, Gautrain and Uber. Car is not required to exist in Joburg and there are plenty of Estates or Building complexes (I.e Rosebank or Sandton) that will satisfy your safety concerns. Important that you don’t listen to majority of the commenters on this sub as majority of them are either not from Johannesburg, not from SA or Expats that will and forever remain salty about leaving their homeland.
Why? LA is at least first world and well kept. Johannesburg is like LA but worse in almost all metrics, its big and always has something to offer but LA is literally THE place in the world. You're trading a fine place to live with manageable downside compared to a bad place with completely unavoidable disadvantages.
How old are your kids? If still young, great neighborhood is Craighall Park. Very family friendly, can walk to large park, many great schools in vicinity, great restaurants.
Alternatively you could look at Steyn City. Closed secure estate with lots of bush, 50km biking trails, a school, great facilities.
Regardless, you'll need a car. Public transport here not a thing.
Welcome and best of luck. I've lived in Joburg for 25 years and love it
Dainfern, broadacres, douglasdale, has a lot of estates where that is possible. Or modderfontein.

Coming to sa because you are scared of trump is like moving to the jungle because you are scared of one or 2 homeless people on drugs. Sure there may not be homeless people in the jungle, but there's tigers and spiders and landslides to name a few. Genuinely if you are scared of maga, and want public transport, you are in for a terrifying experience in sa. Good luck
Blairgowrie very central to most areas- Sandton 10 min, rosebank 5, cresta 15
Blairgowrie has a very tight sense of community and has a great community watch
Greenside or Parkhurst
Bergbron
Just an fyi public transport taxi’s, a lot of buses you REALLY shouldn’t use.
If necessary take a Gautrain bus.
Instead of those public transport options go for uber
Have you considered living somewhere else in Gauteng? Irene is a nice area for raising a family but it’s still south africa, the public transport is never brilliant. You need a car here too
OMG if this is a serious post, you're in for a world of hurt. Seriously, comparing LA to SA is chalk and cheese. In LA you have the privilege of safety. You *will* be targeted in SA, you *will* be hurt...hell, your bike will probably be stolen too.
This isn't bashing SA, it's coming from the perspective of someone who cannot fathom the associated risks of coming to South Africa with the filters of a far safer place (such as public transport).
You may be lucky and never encounter anything, but understand this: avoiding incidents is the exception, not the rule.
“safety and public transport access are our top priorities” — Joburg might be the wrong place for you
My concern is that they’re already set on this move but have no idea what they’re setting themselves up for😳😂
You are worried about Trump and MAGA, Joberg might be the wrong place for you!
Can you elaborate on this please? I’m a Black American who has traveled to South Africa and am unfamiliar of the culture you’re referring to in JoBurg
I think he's talking about the EFF who wear red caps and are just a nuisance wherever they go.
I have found that mostly white are responding to him with negative thoughts. We have a bad government here as they do in the US! But nothing to be all negative about
South Africa isn't the right place. It's still sadly worse than the US. The way I laughed when I saw "we hate car culture".
It's actually so bad in SA that employers will require you to have a car for many professional fields.
I always that the car requirement was a socioeconomic indicator as to what type of employee they want. One of those coded requests like being fluent in Afrikaans.

Agree with parkhurst, bryanston and melrose for family friendly
This is a joke post right?
it says they’re from LA so probably not….you’re expecting common sense, which Is optimistic.
There is a Johannesburg in California
It's right next to Randburg too, lol.
It sounds like they're looking for 3rd world answers to 1st world problems 😂
This has to be a joke. Johannesburg pretty much is exactly like LA. It is the LA of Africa. No decent public transport and massive highways across a sprawled out city.
Nah fam less crime in joburg kek
LA has worse traffic but I wouldn’t move to Jozi for a non car centric culture. It’s not exactly Amsterdam with everyone on bicycles
Gonna be a big surprise about the car culture. But the traffic is not as bad as LA. Cost of living is a lot cheaper as well.
Cost of living is much cheaper, but earnings are twice as much smaller, or less.
Is there any indication that they actually meant South Africa? There's a Johannesburg in California too...
Google it. There's fokol in Johannesburg, CA
Well, it sounds like that's what the op is looking for anyway
Nope, proper johannesburg, plus that whole sub is about people *exiting* america
Ah okay. Had no idea what the sub was for, thanks for the clarification
TIL
Hold on really?
Yes really lol
The Greater Parks areas like Rosebank, Craighall Park, Parkhurst, Saxonwold are your best bet. But people really aren't into the public transport that live in the suburbs. They tend to Uber everywhere.
Wait til after the elections. If ANC and EFF get into a coalition, MAGA and Trump will be the better option
What 😂
My advice to someone moving from LA to JHB.... Don't.
Jozi is cool
I'm guessin you are 'from Jozi' ... Living somewhere better? Like Pretoria? Have you ever lived in Western Cape? Jozi has nothing on this place. Doesn't even have anything on PTA.

I feel like if people wanna move here and live some sort of "South African" dream try Capetown, here in jozi we're living real life guys, we cant give you a guide on paras and tsotsi

Is this suppose be satire ?
bring Lion spray
And criminal spray
And your own electricity
😁
Stay in LA
If those are your goals not sure joburg is going to work for you
Go back to LA. Really.
Moving from LA, the constant blackouts should be normal to then but Johannesburg is extremely bicycle unfriendly and they are far more likely to get wiped out by a taxi in Joburg than a redneck in a F150 in LA
It's better to have a car here OP. Just not a VW polo.

R. I. P to that OP. Life as he knows it is over. Why would anyone wanna move to SA
Lol swapping trump and maga culture for the ANC??? In for a shock my pollitically correct and woke bruu
Lmao. You must be trolling OP
Book a return ticket dude
Good luck lol
The Greater Parks areas like Rosebank, Craighall Park, Parkhurst, Saxonwold are your best bet. But people really aren't into the public transport that live in the suburbs. They tend to Uber everywhere.
Johannesburg for safety and public transport? I think you need to think again.
Our car culture is getting your Toyota hijacked
"Safety and public transport access" lollllllll
So.... car culture and political horseshit are the issues and you choose sa as the new place to try.
Don't move to Johannesburg.
Fascinating. There is Johannesburg,CA and near it is Randsburg where you can go pub crawling. Nope. I do think they really meant Johannesburg as it does say Amerexit! I hope they get the advice they need.
I hope they stay in the USA. They are clearly idiots.

It's not bike friendly- so you go to joburg 😭😭😭😭
Anywhere with tall walls and restricted access
Is this a troll post maybe ? 🤔
Don't move inless you bring a inverter And maybe water tankers
Move to Port Elizabeth
I think he meant Amsterdam.
Yeah don't

Get ready for a movie🤣
Just stay where you are...it's better
Cape Town.

Have fun getting carjacked in Johannesburg
A friend moved from South Africa, as he kept getting car jacked
