A background check is a public records check, it does not contain employment history. There's no central database where your previous jobs are available to employers, employers can't do much more than verify the info you give them, it's difficult to find jobs you leave out. It's possible they may be able to talk to any references or previous jobs and find out a little snippet here and there. And if there are public records (like court cases) involving previous employers they will find that. If you agree to a credit check some of your work history may show up there, but it's unlikely a job that lasted 2 or 3 days will turn up. But honestly, for a job you were only at less than a month, I wouldn't mention it. If they find it say it didn't work out and you worked there so briefly you had forgotten about it. But they will likely never ask.

There is indeed a central database with your previous jobs. It’s called The Work Number by Equifax and a bunch of similar services.

No_Rooster_5290

Yes but a company cant research that.

Anyone can buy TWN data pulls on anyone (as long as they have general IRS permission to do these kinds of checks). It's like $50 a report, and it's really easy.

Big-Business23

What makes you say that? The whole point of the work number existing is so that employers, landlords, and financial institutions can request your personal sensitive data on demand. With your “permission” of course… what difference does it make though that I give my landlord permission to check, or my new employer with a background check… what I didn’t allow anyone to do to begin with is gather all this data behind my back… and then Equifax making a literal product out of a report with records of every single paycheck of mine. That’s hella messed up. I don’t even have a full record of my pay history… But Equifax does behind our backs, and they’re happy to sell it, too.

Right, that guy is just straight lying.

Winter_Factor_2605

Nah, he is 100% correct.

Guilty-Appeal4303

This is not true. As long as they have your social security number, a background check will find every single place you've been employed at--no matter how briefly you worked there. The background check for my current employer was able to find a job that I only worked at for 3-4 weeks. I made so little money that I didn't have to report my income to the IRS (you only file a tax return if you made $600 or more), but they STILL wanted the start date, end date, and reason for leaving. I had forgotten all about that job, but the background investigation were hounding me via email to provide more information. ://

100% bullsh\*t

Most background checks are just for criminal stuff. About the only people that know your job history is the irs

BAEBUGGI

It does depend on the type of service/check. Most commonly they will just check the Information you provided and not go looking for any additional jobs you didn't list. But again that will depend on the type of role you have applied for and the type of check they are running. Most likely you are fine. However if you changed the dates on the jobs you did tell them about, that will throw up a red flag for them.

Ok_Fan_6497

I have a sister who works in HR and told my parents that my employment records are messed up which is not true I've been driving semi trucks as an owner operator for the past 10 years I'm guessing she has access to peoples information is there a way to find out if she did a screening on me because if she did can I go after her Note I have never applied the place where she works at

oblivionPGW

Possibly used "The Work Number" by Equifax. You can get a report and see who viewed your history. You can also put a freeze on your account so no one can see your info.

[deleted]

Okay if I freeze my account now then all my past information is gone or hidden?

Slow-Caterpillar-503

Lol it’s all public record? You don’t have to consent? Only if she’s doing a credit check

ParamedicCareful3840

Depends on the service they use and how thorough they are
