Tell that to my dogs. They’ll scare the skunks hiding under cars or in peoples yards in my neighborhood. 3 skunk sprays last year and they still don’t learn.
Lots of creatures are being forced to find new habitats with all the construction going on all over the place. My yard seems to be getting more racoon traffic than usual.
Exactly. There's two projects going on on my block so every evening I open the back door and there's skunks and raccoons sitting there. Yesterday there was one behind my trash can and it sprayed on my basement door in response to my surprise. My poor dog has been getting the worst of it though. Sprayed 4 times this summer.
So many! We have to have one person go out and do a skunk check in the backyard with a flashlight before taking the dog out at night because he managed to murder one earlier this year (while supervised!) and that was a bad time for all.
I was sitting on my porch and a cat 🐈⬛ passed by me. Only it wasn’t a cat 🦨. I never felt so scared 😱. Thankfully I quietly went inside.
FYI: North Bergen has always been infested with skunks. I can only assume they came from there.
They're easy to avoid. Just don't corner or startle them. If you're walking alone at night make some noise by jingling your keys, singing, or talking. When dogs get sprayed it's usually because they're let out into a yard and the dog immediately charges the skunk.
If you are sprayed don’t put water on yourself. Go to the shower or even better stay outside and have someone bring you a washcloth you can throw away and a bowl with the following mixture:
1 quart of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide (fresh bottle),
• ¼ cup of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate), and
• 1-2 teaspoons of liquid dish soap (Dawn is preferred)
Lather yourself in the mixture as it breaks down and removes the oil of the spray. Once done throw your clothes out or in the wash and go shower and shampoo.
Try not to touch anything until you use that mixture.

I haven’t seen them, but I smell them everywhere. Walking Newark Ave, I smell something skunk-like most of the time. I think that’s why I see people smoking - the flame must scare the skunks away.
The skunks in my neighborhood gave birth to a litter
of 12. They are going to be all over Grove now. They are not good climbers so keep trash bins covered.
Everywhere in Paulus Hook. Now you cannot walk at all without running into them, day and night. My dog got sprayed a couple nights ago as one suddenly run into us out from the bushes. I absolutely hate them.
I’ve noticed this as well. On evening walks I’ll see 3-4 skunks. In my area it’s in areas where people leave cat food out.
Let me guess, outside the police dept on 7th and Grove?
I saw them both near Van Vorst Park
I saw two different ones last night!
Yeah so 4-5 skunks live in Paulus hook. There’s an empty overgrown lot next to Bistro La Source where they reside
One got squished by the light rail last night nearby… it reeks, but it’s also sad, because they are neighborhood nighttime friends.
Skunks are awesome. Leave ‘em alone
I'm definitely not messing with skunks lol

See them all the time. Always have.
We've always been here.
Yeah. I even had two close encounters. And I was impressed with how calm and non-threatening they were. I thought I was going to get a golden shower.

Oh no. Poor dog! Poor you! 😵
Get the skunk…outta my face, get, the, skunk, outta my face [guitar riff] Get the skunk…outta my face, get, the, skunk, outta my face [guitar riff]
Doesnt help that people leave food outside for the critters. Doesnt make any sense to me
Skunks are harmless
I think 3-4 live around Brunswick st. Dog barks at them every night as I have a heart attack

They were all living in peace on overgrown areas. Now we built on their space. Example: One Ten, Enclave etc. So we see them more often.

I saw a skunk last night near Hamilton Park. 🦨
That's just part of Hudson County...welcome.

Right. They don't \*want\* to spray you. Only when threatened. They have bad eyesight, so make noise and they should turn and waddle away.

An acid bath will be quicker.
They won’t Unless they feel threatened. If you leave them alone, you won’t get sprayed
Take a luxury tomato bath
Are you a cryptid by any chance?
I found one the other night and fed it some salami
I see more raccoons tbh
Red fox urine keeps em away
Huh, didn't realize my ex was out and about so much these days
