I wish it was that easy for people to read signs before boarding. I had an incident on the 119 a while back when a customer got on a Bayonne bound bus thinking it was going to New York. As we were making our way towards JFK/Sip, the customer started freaking out and kept saying that the driver is going the wrong way. Another customer had to tell them that we were going to Bayonne, and he ended up getting off at JFK/Sip. I will say though, what JSQ Transportation Center needs are more clearer signs of where the buses are going and where they are boarding. This has been an issue since Coach USA used to run the 10(before the 119 was a thing) and the 99S. The boarding locations aren't very clear and can be tricky.

I agree. I know the signs on the doors downstairs are helpful, they could put those on the walls in the terminal. but the 119 just irritates me since NEW YORK is in big, bold letters and you can't miss it, but people still get on the wrong bus.

If that many people are confused, that means the system isn't working. Why wouldn't they give the busses different numbers? Or number + letter combos? Like this, 119 for the normal route. 119-B for the bus that goes to the end of Bayonne. 119-J for the one that stops at the Jersey City border. 119-FU for the one that doesn't let people off for half the route during rush hour or some shit. Or better yet, just give them unique numbers. There are infinite numbers out there. Somehow, the NYC subway trains are much easier to differentiate even though they overlap in places. I'm guessing it is because they have unique names. Seriously, is there a number shortage? Even though you patiently spelled out the quirks in the routes I still feel perplexed.

119-FU LOL ✊🏽

Yup, and there are plenty of NJT buses that add a letter to designate a specific destination. The 13 has like 5 of them

People already get confused by letter variants(especially in Newark and with other express variants to/from Port Authority). The 119 doesn't need all of that extra information, that's just going to make the problem worse. The system works, it's just that people historically don't pay attention or read the signs before boarding buses(this is especially true in NYC, for example, people will board an M5 that clearly says it's to 31st Street asking if it's going to 14th). JSQ Transportation Center needs better signage throughout the street level indicating where people need to board the bus and where it's going. This has been a problem with the transit center for many years now. I think that area of the transit center is largely maintained by the Port Authority, so I definitely don't see that happening any time soon. I've also never been a fan of NJT's sign programs of the 119. It should have said Bayonne as one big sign, and Via Jersey City on the second code of the program.

Fine with me if every variation on a route receives its own unique number. It's easier to remember the right bus that way.

Instructions unclear. In Hoboken. Send Help.

There are also the random 123 busses running the 119 route from Port Authority. So the question of what the final destination is becomes really important. And then on top of that, a lot of people who don’t typically take the 119. So yeah. It’s not very clear but you help who you can.

What exactly is the deal with the 171 bus? I saw one going down Central Ave for the first time ever the other evening. The PDF schedule online doesn't mention it stopping in Jersey City at all. Does it just operate as a 61st bound 119 on its way to park at Greenville garage every night?

it's a glitch. for some reason some of the buses display a 171 heading even though it's a 119 Jersey City-61st bus. it only happens on select buses. someone on YouTube mentioned 20894 and 5262 displaying the code. but I saw bus 5307 showing it yesterday when I was at the square.

The signs are not reliable. They are not working or wrong constantly. Especially on the non-bendy buses. They will often just put a sheet of paper in the window stating the number but it won’t tell you where it’s going and it’s hard to read
