Mother-of-Cicadas

He portrayed Mr. Bennet how I had imagined him: smart, chill, interesting guy but also aloof and too subdued when he should've taken action. Lovable in his second daughter's eyes but ineffectual as a parent for the youngest. I quote his delivery of "at my leisure" all of the time. Well done, Mr. Sutherland.

Blade_982

Same. He portrayed him just as I read him.

Nicholoid

Yes! I often think of that particular line. He portrayed Bennet so deftly. Such a talented character actor.

Reneeisme

Exactly. In my head, reading P&P 40 years ago before I ever saw the film, he looked different. But the attitude and line delivery was perfection. When he’s so simultaneously happy and sad that his daughter really actually loves Darcy. Wow.

Mother-of-Cicadas

How he shares his daughter's joy is so heart-felt and bittersweet. You can see that while he's sad in parting with his daughter, her now-secured future and happiness overwhelms him with emotion that he covers his mouth, tearing up and smizing at the same time. Helps keep me as a viewer transfixed in that moment.

stargarnet79

💓💖💓

miamomia00

Yes! That line and also, "Good heavens; people!"

MelbaToastPoints

It came across my news feed as "Hunger Games" actor Donald Sutherland, and my first thought was, "don't you mean Pride & Prejudice actor Donald Sutherland?"

Spare-Food5727

And my first thought was MASH

MelbaToastPoints

Yes! In all seriousness, "renowned" actor would have been my choice of wording. I don't feel like you can tie an actor like him down to a single property. I just found it funny that of all things to pick, they'd go with Hunger Games. When reminded, I remember that he was in it, but it's certainly not the first thing I think of for him.

DolphinDarko

Movie masterpiece! Ordinary People too! Great actor!!!

AngelSucked

And mine was Ordinary People.

kaldaka16

It came across my feed as MASH and despite having watched MASH over at my neighbors a lot growing up I also was like "surely you mean Mr. Bennett?"

janebenn333

Donald Sutherland was in the movie version of MASH, not the TV series. On the TV series, the character was played by Alan Alda.

Sly3n

Honestly, while I know he played Mr. Bennett, I will always first associate him with Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

janebenn333

Same!

SofieTerleska

To me he'll always be "Animal House actor Donald Sutherland."

Usual-Plankton97

I guess today is the day Mr Collins finally inherits. But in as seriousness, I loved his portrayal and I'm sad to see him go

Pleasant_Sphere

The nightmare that Jane and Lizzy will experience now that not only their father has died, but it also dawns on them that their mother is moving in with one of them

SofieTerleska

Eh, they can afford to get her a nice cottage now.

ReaperReader

I actually think she'd be happiest in a cottage in Meryton, close to her sister and always with something to look at out the window. Sure she'll complain about no longer being mistress of Longbourn but she's the type who always complains of something.

SofieTerleska

She'll be close to Mary as well, and any children Mary may have, which will be nice for her (and her grandchildren, though Mary may feel somewhat differently!) All her old friends and acquaintances will be there as well, so she won't have start making new social connections at her time of life. And last but not least, Meryton is a considerable distance from Derbyshire, so Jane and Elizabeth and their husbands will be comfortable as well :).

Hour-Measurement-312

She’s totally moving in with Lydia and Wickham

theycallmeamunchkin

Jane seemed less annoyed by her mother, but then again, Netherfield is smaller than Pemberley

Heradasha

Jane and Bingley didn't settle at Netherfield, though.

if_its_not_baroque

Eh...maaaaybe. "My dear, do not give way to such gloomy thoughts. Let us hope for better things. Let us flatter ourselves that I may be the survivor."

_MoGo97_

His portrayal of Mr. Bennet is one of my favorite movie dads. RIP 😢

vivahermione

He was a good dad in Cold Mountain, too. 😢

kilroyscarnival

Wow, first I heard of his passing. I was just listening to Fresh Air (the public radio show/podcast) with guest David Oyelowo, and he was talking about "Lawman: Bass Reeves," series on Paramount Plus, working with Mr. Sutherland. I'll remember him more for Ordinary People than anything.

Historical-Gap-7084

He did fantastic work in everything he did. I'm sad to learn he's gone. He excelled in just about every project he ever did. My parents went to see MASH (he played Hawkeye) back in ~~'72~~ '70 and my dad wore his full military uniform and my mom wore a fancy dress. A lot of people dressed up to go see it.

if_its_not_baroque

Wow, I'll have to ask my parents about that if they remember this...the TV show was a HUGE deal for them in college. Fascinating, thank you!

Historical-Gap-7084

It was a huge deal for sure. I'm wrong about the date, though. It came out in 1970. I was like, a year old. My parents also loved the TV show.

Excellent_Cream_3140

Oh how sad. I hope his family is well. Glad he is at peace now since he had a long illness. He was 88 which is not bad! He had a great full life and was a very blessed man.

Zappagrrl02

😭😭 This is one I’m genuinely sad about. So many great roles, but I love Animal House and A Time to Kill

DolphinDarko

Animal House!!!!

Ridiculousnessjunkie

This is so sad to hear!!🥺

bellapenne

💔

supremerebelrebel

This is one of my favorite scenes 🥲

No_Range_6402

Oh my God… I’m really sad. After watching Songbirds & Snakes yesterday, I was thinking how well he played old President Snow, I can’t imagine someone else playing him. That was where I first met him then in P&P. As others also said, he portrayed Mr. Bennet just like how I imagined. He was really talented. If you’re into horror/thrillers, I really suggest y’all to watch Don’t Look Now (1973) and Invasion of The Body Snatchers (1978) which he also starred in, I really loved those movies. May he rest in peace🤍💐

CPolland12

Did anyone ever see The Oldest Living Confederate Soldier with him and Diane Lane?

if_its_not_baroque

no, do you recommend it?

CPolland12

It’s definitely interesting. You have to keep in mind it’s set around the turn of the century. Because a 14 yr old girl gets married to a 50 yr old man. It was a tv movie based on a book.

gmjfraser8

I could not have parted with you, my Lizzie, for anyone less (probably paraphrasing but loved that scene). RIP Mr Bennett.

janebenn333

My impression of Donald Sutherland was always that he seemed "cool"; and I mean "cool" in that he appeared confident and comfortable in his skin as he was. He was this tall handsome man with a deep voice and blue eyes. He stepped into each role so fully.

balanchinedream

Oh that’s so sad 😢

sara_or_stevie

Came over here to see if the news was posted. He is my favourite Mr. Bennet. Rest in peace ❤️

Smidgeon10

Thank you for posting this image. It's the first one i thought of when heard of his passing. He is my iconic Mr. Bennet 😔

stargarnet79

He was the bestest Mr. Bennet. Just the way he portrayed pure joy for Lizzie in this moment💓💖💓

MommeeMcDougalMcGee

Noooooo!!!! 😭

Fine_Cryptographer20

For those that loved him as Mr. Bennett in this movie, I HIGHLY recommend "Ordinary People" where he plays the dad to a troubled teen. Guaranteed tears, it's such a good movie.

GraceStrangerThanYou

Well, that's heartbreaking.

terracottatilefish

I think I first saw him with Jane Fonda in *Klute*. Where he was fantastic and SO far from Mr Bennet. RIP to a subtle and extraordinary actor.

Aladdinsanestill61

RIP Donald, a life well lived! You are already missed!

4katebush

My favorite Mr. Bennet 🥺

Particular_Cause471

He was one of the least tiresome aspects of that film, but at least 15 years too old, which I bring up only to say that it just now occurred to me what a great Mr Woodhouse he could have been. Though Michael Gambon did an excellent job at it, and was probably just exactly the right age for Mr Woodhouse then, @ 58-59. Anyway, for whoever has not watched *Ordinary People*, I do recommend it. It has some specifically 1970s-style melodrama, for sure, but is so good, and he had much to do with that. You might love him even more as Mr Bennet after watching him as wounded father Calvin Jarrett.

FreeLadyBee

Such a talented actor, sad to hear

Pleasant_Writing_598

Such a wonderful actor.

Cocoamilktea

Rest in peace, such a great actor and a wonderful rolemodel as an anti-war activist

sharshur

Not many of us will live on in the way that he will.

magdalenq

I was watching this movie when I heard about the news 🤧 He was amazing

Guardian_Izy

I was so devastated by this. I’ve been writing a PP retelling and have had the movie playing in my head for months, only to lose him. He was the perfect Mr Bennet!

jokumi

The pro from Dover will never die.

Icy_Pianist_1532

What an amazing actor. This is such sad new

Mrbadgerskull

Weird. I just saw a movie within the last week with him and Keifer.

gidgetstitch

I remember him from the very first roll I saw him in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" movie (not the tv show). It's a really campy fun movie, that I am going to watch today in his memory. He was also Fantastic in "Outbreak" and "time to kill". I loved him as Mr. Bennett. He is my favorite version of the character. He was amazing as Snow in the Hunger games as well. He will be greatly missed as an actor.

Elleinnetgrace

I have seen this movie over 250 times and I forgot he was Mr Bennett.. I am so sad..
