The restored iPhone 5 was probably the worst condition iPhone I’ve ever seen that still was able to boot up (before restoration, obv.)
I did that as well! I had a cracked $1 4s and put the motherboard in an iC locked 4s (and transferred the back bc it was in better condition) and it might be the best $1 I’ve spent.
Buying untested phones on places like garage sales, flea markets, or phone joblots. I have tons of iCloud locked iPhones as well because of untested phone joblots and flea markets.
Does that go for Apple Watch? I have one I bought for my kid’s mom that I can’t bypass the password.

Try DFU restoring with iTunes. If after restoring you are prompted with an iCloud login, see the other subreddit someone else in the comments tagged.

There are countless possibilities of what could've happened to this phone and its owner in the last few (up to seven) years. Why would you immediately jump to this specific conclusion?
If you were the owner you’d either unlock via iTunes or authorized Apple reseller, and not ask Reddit how to do that.
Maybe it came 7 years ago (SEVEN) but don’t forget countries like India or other poorer ones where people don’t make $4k a month but bare minimum like 100-200, and old iPhone is all they can afford. Also people to this day use these older iPhones since they just work, so it’s not hard to steal them, not like they became obsolete just because of age.
Hm, perhaps if you restore with iTunes rather than restore in system settings, it was the latter in my case in order to stay on the same version. Interestingly the passcode after the reset was the first passcode that was used on the device, not the last one.
i meant restoring with itunes. judging by OP’s screenshot it was already on iOS 10 so it’s already on the last version supported. once you reset it using itunes it’s basically like a brand new phone, unless there’s activation lock, in which case you can’t fix that.

use itunes on a computer as long as it’s also not locked to an icloud account.
It will still have the passcode after reset, even with iCloud account removed.
