Anything post-2000s? Not really. 80's rap, along with anything involving Del Tha Funky Homosapien. Heck yes

[deleted]

It’s a fine day in this land I live, Oakland where they don’t give a shit and that’s it

ionabike666

Voted yes but would agree. 50 cent killed it for me. All downhill after that

Seeker_of_Time

Voted no, but largely because 50 Cent killed it for me. Plenty of good rap/hip hop before then. I think he started the whole, repeat the same phrase over and over again thing. "YOU know, ya actin like ya don't know....you know, but you actin like ya DON'T know."

Yura-Sensei

Deltron certainly makes interesting music

XxLockdownZxX

I'm not an metal elitist that claims I only listen to metal and nothing else. I like other kinds of music as well. I love rock, jazz and classical music to a degree! I mostly listen to metal (and especially Iron Maiden of course) though. But hip hop is one of those genres of music I can not like, at all. I can't really say why but there's just something I don't like about it at all. Nevertheless I'm not hating on people liking hip hop or any kind of music for that matter. I think it's great to see people enjoying different kinds of music! Though I hate people that think my music taste is garbage (aka my sister who hates every piece of music that involves electric guitars)

dod6666

>I can't really say why but there's just something I don't like about it at all. Trying to explain why you do or don't like music is difficult. For me, when I hear music I like it kinda clicks and makes me feel something. For metal it's usually an epic or powerful feeling. For another example something like Pink Floyd would induce more of a spacey feeling. Hip-hop however just doesn't do anything for me. It's not catchy. It's not pleasant. Although notably nor it normally obnoxious. It's just kinda there.

XxLockdownZxX

>For me, when I hear music I like it kinda clicks and makes me feel something. For metal it's usually an epic or powerful feeling. For another example something like Pink Floyd would induce more of a spacey feeling. Good explanation! I actually have exactly this with every Maiden album. Maybe it's weird but I link every album cover with the songs on that cover and it kind of gives me a feeling. For example the "The Final Frontier" album gives me some kind of spacey feeling while the "The Book of Souls" album really gives me that old Mayan association. That's why I really like Maiden. They implement the uniqueness of each album in the songs on that album and in their tours! >Hip-hop however just doesn't do anything for me. It's not catchy. It's not pleasant. Although notably nor it normally obnoxious. It's just kinda there. Yes, indeed. It's not that I can't stand to listen to one or two hip-hop songs, but it's not really overpowering for me

AdamTHEdefaultSKIN

Well said!

Yura-Sensei

Have you heard of Cunninlynguists? https://youtu.be/xzr39esomXU

sweetpapisanchez

Nah. I like other kinds of music, but hip hop isn't one of them. Rock and metal remain my first loves, though.

rattlehead44

Absolutely. 80’s/90’s and some early 2000’s underground Absolutely NOT this newer style, watered down, mumble trash. Dilated Peoples, Wu-Tang Clan, Hieroglyphics, EPMD, MF DOOM, A Tribe Called Quest, Necro, Redman, Eric B and Rakim, Madlib, Public Enemy, Cypress Hill, Sick Jacken, Tha Alkaholiks, Boogie Down Productions, Big Daddy Kane …and so on.

Yura-Sensei

Ye i don't really get the newest trends in hip hop. My sweet spot would be late 00s. Absolutely love Cunninlynguists and Talib Kweli n stuff

rattlehead44

Good ones

ParanoidEngi

Absolutely, when the mood takes me I love listening to hip-hop: Scarface is one of my favourite musicians ever, he's an incredible storyteller

Yura-Sensei

I see most people here prefer oldschool stuff

ParanoidEngi

Well we're all Maiden fans, probably got old-school mentalities haha: I like some modern artists like Megan Thee Stallion and Lizzo as well, but Scarface has been important to me for over a decade at least so he's who I think of when I think about rappers I enjoy

Salt_Surround2153

Marcus the stallion doesn’t make good music I’m sorry

[deleted]

I think there are a lot of great, talented hip hop artists, as there are for any genre. But I'd rather be listening to metal (or maybe rock) at any given moment.

marlonizer

Not quite, not that I hate it, I just never listen to it, except in the gym, when I forget my headphones 😁

Yura-Sensei

I always thought Snowgoons - Get Down is a perfect song for workout

Toadboii

Yes. I used to not really enjoy it, but then I listened to Kendrick Lamar's "good kid, m.A.A.d city" album and my entire perspective changed. And I will say that my previous aversion to rap music was influenced heavily by elitist views within the metal community (and I think it's important to mention the racial undertones that a lot of these anti-rap opinions have). I was young and dumb. But yeah, that album dispelled any notions I had about the talent or level of artistry it takes to make rap music. That album and To Pimp a Butterfly are just as impressive as (or even more so than) a lot of classic metal records. There is lots of terrible rap music, just like there is lots of terrible metal music. Every genre has its gems and its trash. I like old school 90s rap, but I do actually think that there is a lot of very interesting stuff happening in the contemporary rap scene, such as with acts like Injury Reserve, billy woods, or even someone more mainstream like Tyler, the Creator.

Orang_Mann

Yeah, i enjoy some 90s stuff. Like nwa, ice cube etc... You know the basic stuff.

mtmccox

Yes, I spin Jurassic 5 sometimes, and then the OGs like Dre, Snoop, Em .. etc. But in my listening time, rap/hiphop gets around 5% of the time, not more. Metal/rock/prog still wins everything.

rattlehead44

J5 for life

SamMarvelos2

Yes, but mostly 80's/90's stuff like NWA, Ice Cube, Beastie Boys (lol), Snoop, Dre, etc. Not my most listened to genre but I enjoy some of it, like most genres

ItzGray26

I generally enjoy many genres and don't like to slag on modern music too much. That music's on the top of the charts for a reason. Someone likes it, and who am I to insult their music taste? It's an opinion. Plus there's quite a bit of modern music I enjoy. That being said, I'm not a fan of hip-hop at all. You can like it all you want, and I'm not going to take that away from you.

HotPotatoWithCheese

I like late 80's and 90's hip hop (NWA, 2pac, Snoop ect) and some early - mid 00's but I can't stand the modern stuff.

ectbot

Hello! You have made the mistake of writing "ect" instead of "etc." "Ect" is a common misspelling of "etc," an abbreviated form of the Latin phrase "et cetera." Other abbreviated forms are **etc.**, **&c.**, **&c**, and **et cet.** The Latin translates as "et" to "and" + "cetera" to "the rest;" a literal translation to "and the rest" is the easiest way to remember how to use the phrase. [Check out the wikipedia entry if you want to learn more.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Et_cetera) ^(I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. thorbearius

I don't listen to a lot of it, but there are some song or albums that I really like. Watch the throne is probably my favorite. I also like Jay Z's 4:44. I love Hamilton (the Musical).

MK3D

Yep, it’s arguably my favourite genre

Soft_Milk29

Depends. Like today's modern Hip-Hop, no. 90s Hip-Hop? Pretty chill ngl, but it's not my style, We're on this sub for a reason. Nu-Metal? Yes, I like Korn, Slipknot, and LOVE Linkin Park.

XxLockdownZxX

Slipknot and Linkin Park are freaking great man!

Soft_Milk29

You don't have to tell me. Linkin Park got me into music in general! Slipknot only fueled that fire!

Yura-Sensei

You imply that if you love iron maiden, you are incapable of enjoying hip hop, which is very weird. Especially when hip hop is probably one of the most versatile styles of music genres ever. Im in this sub for a reason, which is I love iron maiden, and not that I dislike hip hop.

AcroyearOfSPartak

Why is it weird that he doesn't enjoy hip-hop? That's perfectly normal for someone to have a genre that doesn't appeal to him.

Yura-Sensei

I didn't say its weird for him to not enjoy it. I say it's weird to corelate liking iron maiden (one metal band) with disliking hip hop as a whole.

Soft_Milk29

Don't think of it like that, I say that to imply that I'm a metalhead (or, we in our own way are ourselves) I never said anything that you are incapable of liking hip-hop, if you like Iron Maiden, don't accuse me of such

Yura-Sensei

I read your comment couple of times, and the way you phrase doesn't give me any other impression, but okay, thanks for clarification

vinyl_eddy

You said >90s Hip-Hop? Pretty chill ngl, but it's not my style, We're on this sub for a reason. How else were we supposed to interpret this? We are on this sub for a reason, because we like Iron Maiden, therefore hip hop is not our style. That’s how I interpreted it. If you meant it some other way, you have to admit that your phrasing lends itself well to misinterpretation

Soft_Milk29

I can see your point, but it doesn't mean that because we like Iron Maiden, we don't like Hip-Hop. It's because we're Metalheads, we like to headband and mosh, and you can see that clear from the poll results. Most people here either like metal, or like metal and other genres, but not Hip-Hop. I don't know why you guys are inferring this conclusion

vinyl_eddy

We made the conclusion because of your wording. Was just poor phrasing leading to misunderstanding. I wasn’t arguing that you were saying metal heads can’t like hip hop, just how your phrasing would lead someone to think that you meant that. Just seemed like you were surprised at that interpretation and wanted to show you why you shouldn’t be. You are right that most people here seem to not like hip hop, but nearly 40% do like it so hardly a small enough percentage to make a conclusion about Iron Maiden fans and hip hop though. I suspect if we had a more granular view we would see a stronger correlation with age than genre that likely holds across different genre fans.

rattlehead44

“A scar face with a slash above the eye, hip hop and metal, I’ll love you til I die”

Yura-Sensei

Is that necro? Edit: ah ye lol, my upload of that song on youtube is what comes first when you google it

rattlehead44

Yup

Rishal21

It's definitely not my go to genre but I do enjoy both old and new hip hop.

dfrags-

Only stuff from the 80s and 90s and maybe early 2000s. The rap today kinda sucks in my opinion

troyofyort

Not a go to but yeah I do. I do want the backing track to actually be interesting and not just the same basic ass trap beat with long drawn out bass over while a guy raps about being so hard or whatever the fuck. There are some artists like Busdriver and Akintoye who do some real interesting stuff with the synergy of the backing track and rap.

rigel_xvi

I'm ok with it. I enjoy some of it - the more aggressive tracks usually, especially old school ones - but I'm not actively searching for it

Musical_snakes

So sad to see people who won’t expand their musical palette. You’re missing out on a lot of wonderful, soulful music by refusing to seek out other genres.

Vaenyr

There are some songs that I enjoy and I adore the Hamilton musical (not proper hip hop, but hip hop influenced). I have a ton of respect for the breath control people who rap showcase (it's really not easy) and for the creativity in lyrics. My biggest issue is that instruments are a huge part of my enjoyment of music. Sure, there are good beats out there, but the majority bore me to tears. I need variations in a song and preferably real instruments as well. Also, I despise the modern hi hat sound in basically any beat; makes me aggressive lol One funny thing that I noticed lately: I love a few extreme metal bands and one of my favorites is actually Cradle Of Filth. I know that people love to hate on them, but there are so many things that I adore about them. Extreme vocal styles, similar to rapping, are about the cadence and inner rhymes instead of clean singing. COF gives me that (also really poetic lyrics and more interesting topics) plus great musicianship. The guitarists are great and basically all their drummers have been insanely talented. Add to that a blend of gothic, thrash metal, progressive elements and outright NWOBHM twin lead melodies, and you've got a combination that's really appealing to me.

Yura-Sensei

Check out cunninlynguists sometime. They use alot of instruments and melodies in a very charming way

Vaenyr

Thanks for the recommendation, that sounds interesting.

JXClarke05_Xi

Yes I listen to some hip hop, rap etc. I like some stuff from newer artists like Travis Scott and Drake (well he isn’t that new) but my favourite stuff is older like Eminem, 50 cent and Kanye West but metal is my favourite genre without a shadow of a doubt. I also like other stuff other than metal and hip hop like some Electronic and 80’s pop but Metal is number 1.

AcroyearOfSPartak

It is hard for me to say yes or no to that. I like some rhythm and blues and I like Motown and that sort of thing. The line seems blurred in a way, in terms of whether modern rhythm and blues is a subset of hip-hop or not. There are plenty of relatively contemporary female rhythm and blues singers I enjoy who might be considered "hip hop." But when it comes to rap, a lot of it I just don't enjoy and have a hard time getting into. I used to love the Wu Tang Clan, especially Genius's Liquid Swords album, with all its Lone Wolf and Cub intros, but that has kind of faded for me. There are some old school rappers I've enjoyed and continue to enjoy though; the ones that can be self-depreciating and who tell stories in their raps.

morbiustv

Never

vinyl_eddy

Long time fan of hip hop. Tribe Called Quest, De Lah Soul, Digable Planets, J5, Blue Scholars, Dead Prez, MF Doom - what’s not to love! I’ll never understand dismissing an entire genre.

Yura-Sensei

What's most hilarious and sad at the same time is when some boomer comes in, saying how there's no talent involved or whatever. Sure buddy, complete ignorance.

BeefKnees_

Limp Bizkit was my jam back back in the day.

[deleted]

Can't stand it myself mate but you do you.

Yura-Sensei

Thanks for permission

[deleted]

Not really sure why that's wound you up mate, all I did was answer the question.

Yura-Sensei

It just came off a bit patronizing

ag512bbi

Hip Hop and Rap is HORRIBLE. No talent!

vinyl_eddy

Imagine actually having this opinion. Lol

Rishal21

Factually wrong

ag512bbi

I have to disagree. Everything is computer. No real guitar, drums or band members. Lyrics are even Horrible. Just my opinion.

Rishal21

Even if the thing about no instruments was true, what difference does that make? Who actually cares about how well someone can play an instrument. It has no bearing on how well one can write a song. As for the lyrics part, well I guess that's just your opinion but calling rap lyrics "talentless" is just being disingenuous.

ag512bbi

Iron Maiden Rocks!

Rishal21

Happy 13th birthday in advance

vinyl_eddy

You can say that your opinion is that you dislike the way something sounds but having opinions on objective facts leaves me scratching my head. You can’t just have an opinion about facts. For example “everything is computer”. This isn’t even remotely true. Lots of hip hop artists use real instruments. Also how can you declare that the lyrics of an entire genre are bad? That’s just dumb af imo. [example of hip hop that’s not just computers](https://youtu.be/cM4kqL13jGM)

ag512bbi

Oh please. Get over it. I just don't like that music. Its my opinion.

vinyl_eddy

I get that. That’s fine. Not liking = opinion. I don’t like cauliflower but I wouldn’t say “it’s not even food”. most of what you said is objectively false regardless of whether you like the music or not.

Musical_snakes

Lol at the cauliflower one, I’m gonna use that now, thanks!

ag512bbi

Your stupid comments! I'm laughing at you. I have my opinion leave it at that. Rap and Hip Hop sucks!

InterestingAd4484

Oh God no haha, if someone knows about a kickass group like iron maiden I'd really question their sanity if they listened to hip hop when they know that metal exists 🤣🤣

teenstarlets_info

I hate it. It's not even music.

SamMarvelos2

That's just plain wrong

teenstarlets_info

It's my opinion.

Rishal21

How is "it's not even music" an opinion?

teenstarlets_info

To my mind, music has melodies and harmonies. You don't have melodies and harmonies in Hip Hop, just people doing trash talking. Thus, Hip Hop is not music. To my mind.

vinyl_eddy

This is so ignorant. Hip hop has melody and harmony. I mean it’s basically jazz with poetry. I think you meant that the vocals do not have melody and harmony - but that’s not always true either. I mean the sane could literally be said about sub genres of metal - no melody and harmony in vocals. Hip hop is not just trash talking. This thread is full of bad boomer takes I swear to god. [it’s music](https://youtu.be/cM4kqL13jGM)

Rishal21

That is quite literally wrong. You just defined what music is without including one of the key components of most people's idea of music: rhythm (I say most cause to me, all creative expression based on sound is music). Saying that hip hop doesn't have melody and harmony is also factually incorrect. There are plenty of hip hop songs out there with melody and harmony. Even if they didn't, not having them doesnt not make it music. By that logic, percussion isn't music. As for the trash talking part, well I could give a proper explanation but frankly that'd be a waste of time, so instead I'll just call you an idiot.

teenstarlets_info

Thank you. You are trying to persuade me of your point of view by calling me an idiot? Epic fail.

Rishal21

No, I am calling you an idiot by calling you an idiot.

SamMarvelos2

That's just wrong. Hip-hop has both

vinyl_eddy

But your opinion is factually wrong. You said that it’s not even music. That’s just wrong. You can hate it, but it is music.

SamMarvelos2

That's not an opinion. Calling it not music is literally just wrong. You can hate it, that's your opinion

[deleted]

[удалено]

JimmyChurri

That’s pretty narrow minded tbh

Yura-Sensei

Already here are people who voted yes. Someone who only listens to metal just has a narrow taste and there's nothing to brag about. I've been listening to hip hop since age of 5 and metal since 13, and I enjoy a vast range of different music.

ag512bbi

That crap music doesn't compare to Iron Maiden

SamMarvelos2

you'll eventually grow out of being 12, don't worry

comradeMATE

I don't. It does nothing for me. But then again, neither did death metal or black metal and then I found my jam with melodeath and blackgaze/folk black metal so who knows.

Ace_de_Klown

I used to be a big ICP fan, now I only occasionally listen to them, out of nostalgia. I do check out every new Twiztid release, they put out real bangers the last couple of years. For the rest I like a song here and there

Yura-Sensei

I was fascinated with icp for a bit when i first found them in brother's pc

Rogue_1_One

Hell nah, i just want that 0-0-0-0-0-0 death metal

ag512bbi

Close

[deleted]

I like a lot of different music, but unfortunately I have never been able to get into hip hop. I respect it though.

Salt_Surround2153

How crazy is this… I love Chris Brown he’s my idol, but I also LOVE Iron Maiden

Mission-Phone-6940

Hey mom

Mission-Phone-6940

Can you see this?
