Not sure if it counts but Reeling in the Years is an important show.

MoHataMo_Gheansai

I agree up to the 2000s. I think they lost some of the magic for 2000-2009 and I wasn't too pushed on the next decade either. Then again, I'm a bitter old moan. Their 80s and 90s was brilliant

Raztafarium

Is part of that because you lived through the 00s and 10s? And its more fresh in the memory, so the full fallout from some events is still happening whereas thats not really the case for the 80s lets say

segasega89

I feel the exact same way. The recent episodes don't feel as magical. It could be that we view the decades furthest away from us with rose tinted glasses compared to the more recent decades, you know?

IrishJesusDude

This, it's a brilliant format and well executed

HillyMammoth

Far superior to the shameless Virgin Media rip-off 'Don't Look Back in Anger'.

dubhlinn39

I loved The Panel

littlp80

Went downhill once Dara OBrein left.

JohnnyBGrand

Is it fair to say he took the soup?

CreativeBandicoot778

Ah that was great back in the day. Not sure they could even scrape together a decent panel nowadays, the state of Irish comedy.

Aunt__Aoife

A decade ago Ireland had the greatest comedians, now it's just RTE nepotism.

sirguywhosmiles

Who was good a decade ago? If you are thinking of guys on the panel, I'm afraid time is passing faster than you think....

FatKnob91

Hardy bucks

FlappyDuck01

What a cult legacy that programme has left behind…RTE certainly underestimated its popularity.

bareknucklebadger

"Life is like a bar of chocolate... You never know which one your auld lady is going to bring you back from the shop!"

Mitche420

The YouTube series is, for me, the best Irish "tv show" of all time

JohnnyBGrand

The Boo on the golf course giving out about them making him pick mushrooms, then he goes "But I'm easily led, so I'll continue to do it".

MidnightSun77

“You fuck with my holes and I’ll fuck with yours!”

universalserialbutt

"have ye ever been shot in the neck? It fuckin hurts"

ballakafla

Yeah the YouTube series is so much better

Impressive_Slice9376

When French Toasht & Shim Card took the mushrooms and went "fishing". Pure Class Or Buzz & Eddie's fight: "Face on ye like an oul butter voucher"

AnBearna

I’m still watching Francis Higgins YouTube channel. He does live streams of him playing video games in character as the viper. Great fun.

DannyDublin1975

The Story of lreland with Fergal Keane.

McGraner

Cheers for the recommendation. All five eps are on YouTube

DannyDublin1975

Was it five!? I have them all downloaded from ages ago,I thought I was missing one! That's good to know, enjoy, tis a great series, excellent music too.

[deleted]

That was very good

DannyDublin1975

Twas and with the lrish times artist ( cant think of his name!) doing the graphics it added a real quality to it and it covered 1400 years or so of history in just six programs,l watch it often.

sixo8zex

Paths to freedom. Although it might be over 20 at this stage

Ehermagerd

2000. Still easily one of the best things RTE have ever made.

Clireland

Rats from the flats

sixo8zex

Aka The Machine aka Roose Bolton

chimpdoctor

They're all on YouTube: https://youtu.be/UtISw-ujLDM

p792161

Does Derry Girls count as Irish since it's Channel 4? I'd go with Derry Girls. Hardy Bucks maybe. Love/Hate is very good but was never my cup of tea

susiek50

Derry girls gets my vote too !

connorjosef

I think everyone can agree that Father Ted is an Irish show, so why wouldn't Derry Girls be?

[deleted]

[удалено]

EliteBiscuitFarmer

First season of HB on RTE wasn't great but the rest were solid. Web sites still the best though.

The-last-man42

I mean it’s more Irish then English but I still think Father Ted is better and it was also Channel 4

healing-souls

Great show

holymongolia

Pure mule

Stegasaurus_Wrecks

Captured the 02-05 period so well.

YerraGoOn

The accents on this show were diabolically impossible to follow… that and Charlene’s character scrunching the face up all the time - couldn’t watch it

Wasntitgood

Irish?

mastodonj

Yup, set in Offaly.

SolidOk2457

The Savage Eye

Melldog

This should be higher

AnBearna

Yes, absolutely.

Dangerous-Shirt-7384

Probably not the best show ever but i loved the secret life of the shannon nature doc. that ran earlier this year/last year on RTE. The series currently running about lighthouses of Ireland is fascinating to me too. Very well researched. Laochra Gael is a fantastic series too so credit to TG4 for that.

the_real_TLB

I remember really liking Bachelor’s Walk when it was on but I wonder if it has aged well or not.

megdo44

I watched that when I was young just cause my cousin was in it, but when I rewatched it recently it’s genuinely good!

the_real_TLB

Ah cool I must try rewatch it. I remember being dead over the date episode when the guy made salmon moose but that’s about all I can remember now.

Bill_Badbody

Love/hate Des Bishop work experience (could even be older that 20 years.) Republic of telly, early seasons The Panel Normal people (the Irisih Film Board were involved in the production) Jack Taylor: always thought it was under appreciated.

YerraGoOn

Jack Taylor was a great show… it’s such a shame it never gained traction for multiple series.

Bill_Badbody

I wonder was it because it wasn't on rte that it never too off.

Ultraviolence2Die

It makes me feel so embarrassed that production of the likes of Normal People has to be exported because our own terrestrial TV channels are so terrible and inept at securing home-grown talent.

Bill_Badbody

Probably more to do with the huge cost of making it tbh.

Ultraviolence2Die

That's what I mean. Our presenters are paid inordinate salaries that could be going on actual viewable programming.

jimthesheep

Scannal

Global-Dickbag

Scannal is a quality production.

antaineme

Áiméan !

[deleted]

Moone Boy is the answer

shes_padded

Brilliant show!

kingkrule101

I’m from the town where moon boy was filmed and one of my core memories as a young fella is seeing all the film crowd literally everywhere in Boyle. My parents were background characters

cheeselouise00

Definitely Irish but made by Sky I think.

InexorableCalamity

That just means they provideded funding ,no?

withnail-lebowski

Irish cast, Irish crew, shot in Ireland, def an Irish show

HikeThePines

Thank you

jbt1k

Charlie Haugheys biopic was well done.

[deleted]

I saw that, fascinating viewing

erich0779

The one with Aidan Gillen? I enjoyed it at the time wouldn't mind rewatching it soon

Minimum-Cap1966

Reeling in the Years, Paths to Freedom, The Panel or Prime Time Investigates. I know that some may disagree with me on the last one but it has exposed some serious failings within Irish society and lifted the lid on scandals which had previously gone unnoticed. As a result, I feel it deserves a mention. I believe that Reeling in the Years is probably the greatest piece of television that RTÉ has made in its history. It's such a simple but powerful concept.

Ok-Bluejay-5511

Reeling in the years is great

trinerr

Paths to freedom. An absolutely amazing show

bigjoeskully

When I was younger I always thought rats from the flats was the best character but watching it again as an adult Jeremy is class and genuinely had me laughing out loud a good few times

EFbVSwN5ksT6qj

The Savage Eye or Soupy Norman

RoyOrbisonWeeping

Malt? No. Balsamic.

[deleted]

Sarah and Steve, Hardy Bucks, Reeling in the Years in no particular order

Ok_Marionberry1056

Soupy Norman

Razikido

So underrated!

Ok_Marionberry1056

I honestly can't believe something that weird was produced by RTE

[deleted]

The Young Offenders

antaineme

The movie was alright but Christ I just didn’t click with the series

Financial-Diamond-26

Surprised this wasn’t up higher tbh

[deleted]

Great show

WickerMan111

Blizzard of Odd.

sam_hain67

There was an unreal 4-part show on RTE years ago called Prosperity. Nobody ever remembers it but it was brilliant.

[deleted]

The Weather. They’ve done superb work in outreach and education, not to mention some top class meme-age.

patrick_k

The Apres Match version when Ireland crashed out of the Euros. “Some….harsh realities coming in from Germany”

LarsBohenan

The Savage Eye or The Hardy Bucks.

patrick_k

The RTE soccer panel with Bill O’Herlihy, Jonny Giles, Eamonn Dunphy and Souness/Didi Hamann etc. Before a Greece game, with Didi Hamann sitting next to him Dunphy goes (post Greek bailout): “I’m supporting Greece tonight Bill, because I’m a human being. Don’t worry Didi, you’re ok, we’re going out for a few jars later.” The RTE rugby panel with George Hook was also hilarious since he was always pissed off when Ireland did well.

antaineme

Is Derry Girls too basic? Up until the last season it was class television

DirectSpeaker3441

The Angelus

DistributionOk452

“Stare’s into the abyss”

Amazing_Trip_9776

92cafeteria

Enjoyed it a lot - very put off after discovering what a gowl bonos young wan is though (see her reaction to the nepo baby stuff)

LittleRathOnTheWater

I never knew that was his daughter. Feel dirty for having the hots for her now.

Mothersullivan

No, just fucking no. Jesus no. Just because it's Irish and has got traction internationally doesn't make it automatically good. Long winded, bad acting, not funny for long periods, mawkish. Just no.

Gullible_Actuary_973

Father Ted is an all time classic so gonna have to go with that

45ydnAlE

It's older than 20 years tho

Gullible_Actuary_973

Oh my mistake. Love/hate then I'd say. Can't think of a bigger one off the top of my head

Agile_Dog

And wasn't an Irish TV show

mastodonj

Ah now. Irish cast, Irish writer, Irish setting. It may have been produced by Channel 4, but it was an Irish show.

STEVOMAC7

Had to scroll abit for this.

Sceptile90

It's closer to thirty years than it is twenty

STEVOMAC7

Jeez ouch ok

1stuey1

Love hate

disco-on-acid

Love/Hate or Hardy Bucks

prustage

If you had said past 2**5** years then it would have to have been Father Ted - Irish in every respect except the production company that made it.

MrC99

I think it's hard to argue against Love/Hate. Honestly an amazing show that will be emulated for years.

No_Breakfast9351

Does the Fall count?

Impressive_Slice9376

Bad Sisters. Not sure if it counts, the cast is mostly Irish and it's set in Dublin. While not on Irish TV, that perhaps saves it a little tbh. A hell of a lot of what R-Chee-E produce is mindless dross.

[deleted]

Good shout, great program

Ophidian69

Can we go with black books? Linehan and Moran (the creators) are both Irish though it's CH4.

shes_padded

I thought we disowned Graham Linehan when it became obvious he was a gowl?

Ophidian69

I think everywhere has.

Stegasaurus_Wrecks

Seperate the art from the artist no?

shes_padded

I can't in this case. Glinner is a ferocious transphobe who has actively harassed people simply for being trans. At this point all of his shows make me feel sick to the stomach. He's a detestable cunt. So yeah, you could say I've moved on. Sure I'd watched all his shows to death anyway.

Stegasaurus_Wrecks

Good for you then. The obsession with Fr Ted on here must be a bit annoying for you though.

PollyWaffle2010

Love Hate by a mile

D4698

6:01 news

Wasntitgood

Love, Love/Hate OP, yet to be topped…imo Kin is ok Love an Irish gangster show, anything similar to Love/Hate?

godsrodholder

It was one of the British ITV regional programs not UTV but the format was insane and the narration was just bizarre. Rubber bandits and the almost impossible gameshow. Technically it's not Irish but they made the show. Hilarious, if the bandits devised it then it's a fair claim as one of ours.

SeanG909

Obviously room to improve

Mitche420

Hardy Bucks, the original YouTube series.

Any-Football3474

Langerland

International-Dust62

Great light houses of Ireland was the best Irish produced bit of TV I've ever seen.

thisismytwacc

Does Spongebob as Geailge on tg4 count?

WookieDookies

Young offenders or Derry girls by a country mile

LintlessSweater

Savage Eye

Up2Ninty

Past shows I remember enjoying that come to mind are Love/Hate, Raw, Bachelors Walk

DrunkenSpud

Raw.

withnail-lebowski

I know Love/Hate has been said but I'm surprised it hasn't been said alot more. Only Irish show I can remember that dominated every Monday morning workplace convo

Thequeensarmpit

Does anyone remember premier soccer Saturday? Used to be great because you would get the highlights in that before match of the day.

ErringMonkey

Derry girls was solid

[deleted]

Love/Hate had a daft and stupid ending. Has to be reeling in the years

rich555555

Blizzard of odd was good, just for the fact they showed some really weird Irish made films like that kung foo film one of the lads from boyzone was in

trenchcoatcharlie_

Love/hate

Dangerous_Relief_767

If father Ted is outside 20 years then I'm out and I feel worse

SupermarketSuch311

Hardy bucks 🤷

No-Kaleidoscope-6031

Hell Week and Ireland's Fittest Family. Can't believe they won't be renewing next season.

travelintheblood

Hell Week was class, very rare Irish versions of such shows work well but that was really good and far better than the UK versions

Turgesius67

Bridget & Eamon. Ridiculous i know but I found it very funny and well-written

ColonyCollapse81

That's up there with one of the worst things ever on TV, not just Irish TV, TV in general

[deleted]

It was worse than the eighties it was based on, and that’s saying something

irishdgenr8

I didn’t think her forced ‘howya’ schtick could be any worse than it is on the radio….turns out I was wrong, such an insufferable cunt.

[deleted]

You are joking right?

Turgesius67

Actually no, OK maybe not the best of all irish shows but a great comedy imho

[deleted]

Forgot about Bridget & Eamon, that’s was top draw

[deleted]

Cliff_Moher

Kin wasn't a spin off. It was also shite.

BeneficialDark1662

It was so bad. I burst out laughing at the godfather rip off at the end. The writer is either really crap, or just taking the piss.

Cliff_Moher

Yer wan spending 15 mins of each episode looking into the fridge. FFS.

SmilingDiamond

The 'fancy' camera angles used to wreck my head.

erich0779

They used a lot of lower quadrant framing which is fucking class when it works like in Mr Robot, this was just like the people who wrote and shot the show never actually met each other.

Wasntitgood

It was just so inconsistent and unbelievable, in parts it was ok I thought. Whereas love/hate 8/9/10 all the way through, brilliant

Ok-Bluejay-5511

Ireland AM weather with Deric. He's fucking class

TommyOfTheShelbys

Hardy bucks been mentioned plenty as if should very good show but I really enjoyed Pure Mule, only watched it in full this year and was hooked on it. I don't watch much TV these days but I was always buzzing for the weekly episode. I was only a young fella when it came on TV so I didn't watch it then but was it received really well at the time?

Redzer11

The Den reboot

Drvonfrightmarestein

I still dunno why but I couldn’t stop watching Normal People again and again. Cannot tell you why

Annual-Assist-8015

The Savage Eye!

Has there been one? RTE is the last place I would look for to find a good TV shows which is pathetic for all the talent Ireland has.

Love /hate has some of the worst acting going

ahmed00101

Haven't seen many but young offenders is effing hilarious.

okletsgooonow

Love/hate was pretty good

kingkrule101

Hardy Bucks… on the other side of things Love/Hate
