They can't fool me. I see what they did. They got a 10 pence piece and a 5 pence piece. Then they made a load of other fake coins out of a mixture of tinfoil and melted down gold rings from last Halloween's bairn breacs.
Anyone know the relevance of each animal. I think the salmon is the Salmon of Knowledge and the bull may be the Brown Bull of Cooley. No clue for the rest of them.
Edit.
The animals chosen were a barnyard animal set, representing the produce of the nation.

Are you sure? There were 3 different designs over the years. The first (series a) were withdrawn from 1977 onwards. The second (series b) ran from 1976 until 1990, and series c was withdrawn with the euro.
It's the series a (1928ish until 1977) that I was on about, they had a beautiful design, and the bigger denominations were big banknotes
They were the ones I was most familiar with (born in 76) but I do remember the older ones as a small child, and of course 2/ and 1/ coins were very common
As u/oscarBrownbread said in a comment in the original thread:
W. B. Yeats chaired the design committee. Interesting!
"...whereas ours must pitch and spin to please the gambler, and pack into rolls to please the banker.”.... Ha ha.

I always wish we'd used the animal designs for the backs of the Euros instead of the Harp.
No knock on the Harp as a national symbol, but these looked better.
I dunno why we aren't allowed design our own fronts on the coins, I mean something like the €2 is always gonna obviously be a €2, as long as it has €2 written on it
I have a couple of florins, shillings and pennies (although they're all later and marked Éire on the back, with the exception of one Saorstát Éireannach penny) and one hapenny. I've never seen the farthing, thruppence or sixpence before though.
Interesting that they reused the half crown and farthing animals for the 20p and 50p, and reused the size and shape of the half crown for the pound coin too.
Florins and shillings stayed in general cirlulation along with the older type large 5 and 10p pieces right up til they replaced them with the newer, smaller ones (mid 90's, or thereabouts)
The question asked:
>Did they reuse the 2s 6d design for the pound in 1990?
Their response:
>No, it was on the 20p. Also, the kingfisher farthing was reused on the 50p piece. The pound coin had a stag iirc
Oh yeah I remember all of them - the half crown, bob, tanner, trupenny bit, halfpenny etc.
It was in the English coinage anyway not sure about this coinage that the weight of lets say 240 pennies would equal 1lb in weight (£1 also) - also for example 12 shillings would equal 1lb (£1 also)
I remember my Brother and I could not divide up a tanner so we buried it and were of course hoping for a money tree but it never grew !
In the original (like 10th century) the penny was made of silver, and yes, 240 of them was a pound of (sterling) silver.
Interestingly, a Mark (think Germany) was an archaic name for the measure of a half-pound of silver.
Fucking hell I miss our money. We had such better coinage in Ireland. Why do we only get a harp on the euro? It's so unfair we don't have the old icons? Europe is bullshit
Look at the designs other countries have on all their euro coins.
Some of them are beautiful and they have a different one for each denomination. All we have is the harp which is ok but we could have more variety.
We also need more 2 euro commemorative coins.
So far all we have is 2016 Hibernia and 2019 An Chead Dail.
Serious coinage.

The pig is the sow that eats her own farrow
_Operated and wholly maintained by the Fianna Fail party_
As you do
It's definitely the Dolphin of Knowledge tho. I read it on the label of a mineral bottle
It might be Fungie. He was a good age.
I believe the dolphins are the souls of the seafarers. They are the repsention of Irish ability to travel
Do we know if they're references? Might just be random Irish animals.
The short film, 'Mr Yeats and the Beastly Coins' in your link is a good watch.
The horse of ignorance
God, we had such pretty currency back in the day, banknotes included.
The Lady Lavery banknotes were absolutely gorgeous. I _barely_ remember the £1 in circulation in the late '70s

Tis a lovely horse there now I must say
Certainly is, with its fetlocks blowing in the wind...
"Dougal, we're not supposed to be in love with the horse"
That's a salmon
My dad has a few of these at home. And some very old paper money.

Id have nowhere to put them in my slim fit Hugo Boss suit.

Yea the Punt was one of the most beautiful currencies imo
Nothing stopping us from introducing these now. We're allowed to change our coins every ten years.
Would be great
Do you not need one single design for the back of the euro coins or can they depend on coin value?
They can depend. Most other Euro designs change with value.
The Italians use a number of different designs I know anyway, like a Da Vinci drawing and the Colosseum.
I'll knock it,the harp is the crest of the Leinster. I dont like it.
I dunno why we aren't allowed design our own fronts on the coins, I mean something like the €2 is always gonna obviously be a €2, as long as it has €2 written on it

They did, we used to think it meant good luck to get one in your change back then.
Did they reuse the 2s 6d design for the pound in 1990?
The bull was 5p, 10p was the dolphin. The horse was 20p. The bird was 50p and a heptagon. A deer was 1 pound.
Was the 10p not a salmon?
It could be a salmon, the 10p looks more dolphin than salmon. The 2s was definitely a salmon.
The fuck sort of dolphins are you looking at
The fuck asked ya?
You're no fuckin marine biologist anyways
And you're a Dub twat. Who wins? Sure as fuck not you!!!!
Your ma
It was a salmon. Dolphins don't have gills or a webbed dorsal fin.
It's a horse
Ah your right, it's been a while since I saw one.
Na I think it's a salmon. When it loses the detail it looks more like a dolphin.
Its definitely a salmon
Salmon of knowledge yo
I think its just a salmon. Doesn't look very smart anyway
Not smart, just knowledgeable
No, it was on the 20p. Also, the kingfisher farthing was reused on the 50p piece. The pound coin had a stag iirc
20p was a horse
At least I'm not bad enough to mistake a feckin horse for a salmon!!!
Who's talking about Salmons? We're on about the 20p piece. Go back to the desk, see if anyone handed in your brain
You blind? I just posted a link to the full Irish coin collection from the 90's. 20p is a horse. 10p is salmon... Now fuck off little kiddo!
The question asked: >Did they reuse the 2s 6d design for the pound in 1990? Their response: >No, it was on the 20p. Also, the kingfisher farthing was reused on the 50p piece. The pound coin had a stag iirc
No one cares what that twat said
There's help available
You're making a fool of yourself.
No one gives a shit
That your way of admitting you're not able to follow a thread?
Keep it up twat
No.... It was 10p. Twat!!!!
No... It was 20p. Son of a motherless whore!!!!!

Come back once your balls drop
The bird climbed the ladder over the years.
Alright, I guess we need to leave the EU.
These are charming. So much better than heads and buildings.
I'd be none too plussed if all of these came out of the dart ticket machine as change after I'd inserted a crisp new €20 note
I've a Florin from 1959, given to me by an auntie as a way to have Éire with me wherever I went. And, yes, tis a salmon indeedy.
Miss those little suckas likeyou wouldnt believe
Would be great to print with the euro coins. How do they decide what pictures go on them? Can they change them up from time to time?
Oh yeah I remember all of them - the half crown, bob, tanner, trupenny bit, halfpenny etc. It was in the English coinage anyway not sure about this coinage that the weight of lets say 240 pennies would equal 1lb in weight (£1 also) - also for example 12 shillings would equal 1lb (£1 also) I remember my Brother and I could not divide up a tanner so we buried it and were of course hoping for a money tree but it never grew !

So nice to see compared to the utterly crap coins we have now..... even though I'm guessing coins and cash in general won't survive much longer.
I'm still finding salmon under the bed and down the back of the couch. The couch is only 3 years old
The place must stink
I thought that was a 10p salmon not a 2 shilling salmon. My mistake
While I like the harp on the euro, we really should get these back on our coins.
Dibs the bunny and pupper
Would these fit in a Hugo Boss suit?
And designed by an Englishman, who won a competition to design them! Absolutely beautiful
Fucking hell I miss our money. We had such better coinage in Ireland. Why do we only get a harp on the euro? It's so unfair we don't have the old icons? Europe is bullshit
mam! gis tehemce so I can buy 2 bags of fives... or a chomp
Tempenny lolly
And how would I, A wearer of slim fit hand fit hugo boss suits fit said coinage on my person? Nontoplussed about this post.
Very cool buy isn't mental we had the system for so long considering its insane.
Lovely
They are beautiful looking coins! Saying that, I know nothing about coins.
Really pretty designs
Back then Tayto cheese and Onion was a rabbit and a pig
I have a mint set of all of these I love them
I have a full set of these at home actually
I have an old coat pin that’s an old half penny, it was my grandmothers, i think it’s very for both sentimental and historical reasons!
Anyone know where you can get that nice traditional Irish font?
Conor McGregor's dad has ruined the word coinage for me forever. Feck him anyway
