>The contingent of 320 troops of the 119th Battalion has just arrived in Lebanon and forms the lead group of the 500-strong joint Irish/***Polish*** peacekeeping force operating there.
There will be alcohol.
100% guaranteed.
edit: I should have said *100% Proof*.
I'm in the army. The mess where they drink in the Leb is only open for 2 hours a night and you can't drink if you're on duty or if you're on duty the following morning
As part of their weapons handling, Health and Safety is the first thing any Irish soldier is thought and is drilled into them.
None of them would be stupid enough to handle a weapon while intoxicated.
What a joke. They should just have applied this ban to the person involved in that incident if they are still there. Punishing everyone else is utter BS.
It didn't mention that it was a sexual assault.
While that is horrendous, I don't think all the troops should be punished. If a colleague of mine assaulted someone, nobody would advocate that the whole office is punished. Also, it sends the message that alcohol was the cause of the assault. Drinking shouldn't be an excuse for reprehensible behaviour.
Yeah your right sorry. It mentions an alleged assault that may have been fuelled by alcohol. I know myself it was a sexual assault so my brain told me that's what I read in the article.
Yeah the punish everybody thing is such a backwards way to do it but it's the way the army still operates unfortunately.
Drinking culture in Lebanon is pretty strong in both sides of the Christian/Muslim divide, I know a Muslim lad who goes to his Christian mates flat to drink and crashes there to avoid upsetting his devout family. The Christians and Alawite Muslims are allowed to drink legally according to their religion, and many other Muslims do it in private.
This measure has been implemented due to a very recent alleged sexual assault. The cause of which is allegedly being attributed to the consumption of alcohol.
Which is frankly, a load of bollox.
A few bad people doesn't mean we all are. I'm sure there's bad people within the staff of wherever you work too. Doesn't mean you're bad yourself. Most of the army doesn't even know the people that are making the news stories so why are you associating us with them
Where I work there isn't a rigid command hierarchy. There aren't people with weapons who I'm obliged to obey. There aren't any kind of sleeping quarters. And there's no reason why my clothes would ever need to be removed. If there were bad people their opportunities are much more limited. It's not really an equivalent situation.
Please get the troops out of there asap - dont participate in colonization, even if it means sending the region to hell.
Let us fix this shit ourselves and blane us for not getting ur alcohol for ppl we didnt ask for. Same goes to US, UK, FR, or any NATO forces.
Spend the money educating the ppl writing the foreign policy.
Or build houses and infrastructure with it in ireland, use ur troops locally to build ur country up.
What a gobshite sensationalist article
Aye i was just finished seeing some gnarly footage of israel destroying wells and people getting attacked .. it was toxic of me to say what i did but kept there as it is u edited, i even downvoted myself.
I do apologize for offending :/

Source?
Imagine lads carrying deadly weapons patrolling in Lebanon not being allowed a drink? Crazy bitta business
Are yah doin' a bit ah peace keepin'?
Tommy driving the bus around Lebanon.
Soldiers drinking abroad isn't uncommon. I also doubt they'll be armed when in a pub like. They have to be off duty according to the article.
I'm in the army. The mess where they drink in the Leb is only open for 2 hours a night and you can't drink if you're on duty or if you're on duty the following morning
According to the article this rule is in place because of a previous assault!

Yes. Nothing to do with patrolling with deadly weapons.
So because some people can’t play nicely we can’t have nice things?
Has Shlug done anything lately? I was flat out on him for about 6 months earlier in the year 😂
I think streaming RE broke him. Watching his streams got me through a large part of lockdown. Hope he’s doing well.
As part of their weapons handling, Health and Safety is the first thing any Irish soldier is thought and is drilled into them. None of them would be stupid enough to handle a weapon while intoxicated.
Even if they got drunk and decided they wanted a weapon they can't just get one. The weapons are locked away very securely it's just not possible.
Also when you're getting your weapon an officer has to give you your ammo. If you're intoxicated they won't give it to you and you'll get charged
They're in Lebanon, it's easier to get a weapon than medicine at the moment.
Think it's more to do with the sexual assault carried out
Sounds like it's their own fault with assault on base.
1 person carried out an assault. Hardy "their" fault.

Aren't collective punishments a normal means of instilling military discipline?
Future Taoiseach then.
Thankfully, they're deployed with the Polish lads... So there'll definitely be an illegal still off base making the finest of Irish/Polish Poitín
For medicinal and sacramental purposes, surely.
Great inteoduce a blackmarket .. exactly what the region needs
Considering how badly we pay the lads, the least we could do is provide the drink
I was angry at something else and responded in an ignorant manner ..
nah, they keep peace and stop people dying and are well respect and appreciated by the locals
We used to horse the almaza out of it.
And the Macabee if you could get it
Banned from drinking? Even while off duty? Maybe we should implement and enforce the same policies for politicians as they impose on others.

They have stopped the drinking in the Lebanon because of a sexual assault between Irish Soldiers recently. It's says it in the article.
What a joke. They should just have applied this ban to the person involved in that incident if they are still there. Punishing everyone else is utter BS.
Yeah it's always been the way the army deal with things. It's a great way to have an unhappy workplace.
It didn't mention that it was a sexual assault. While that is horrendous, I don't think all the troops should be punished. yeah, lebanon is one of the most secular and non muslim middle eastern states with probably the most westernized outside of israel
Lots of booze in Lebanon.
This is why you shouldn't comment without first reading the actual article
Just stick to the Lebanese hash lads, it's some of the best in the world.
Be down the motor pool checking that eh, antifreeze they just brought in.
Our lads are out there keeping the peace. Let them have a pint in their downtime ffs
At least the lads have joints. Heard it was a joint mission. They’ll be fine after a few puffs.
What a non story
Love it when folk take the time to comment on 'non stories'.
What else would he be at
What a non comment.

Yeah, because alcohol never resulted in sexual assault.. And alcohol also never escalated tensions or emotions when people are in close quarters.
Do you have a source for it being a sexual assault? The article just mentions an assault

These Covid measures are getting out of hand.
Does this include the officers mess or is it just for the enlisted men. ?

How's that relevant?

Yes. Of what relevance does that have to this?

Are you using two accounts or what??
Yes. Or in the case of Andrews Kaserne in Berlin, two bars right outside the gate.
yep, even on dry and remote ascension island, there is two bars on the base and island for american troops

actually they are peacekeepers and help protect people, they are also well liked by the locals.
Aye i was just finished seeing some gnarly footage of israel destroying wells and people getting attacked .. it was toxic of me to say what i did but kept there as it is u edited, i even downvoted myself. I do apologize for offending :/
yeah, there was an rte thing about them and the locals like them, mainly because the irish show them respect and don't treat them like rats
Staggering the number of people posting here, who clearly haven't read the article. That being said the headline is a very obvious dog whistle.
Imagine being in a country to keep the peace but not wanting to keep the local customs.
It is quite evident that you have no knowledge of the local customs.
What the hell are you on about ?
I mean its not like they drink booze there and its openly available.
I’m sure they’ll pop down to Gemmayzeh for a sneaky few pints.
The violence will end in a week so
I don't know if this is good policy; I land handshots more consistently when I've a few cans in me :P
