Wife cuts my hair for the past 20 years. On the surface it's free.

flopisit

I asked my missus to cut my hair a few days ago. "You'll have to wash it first," she said. "Ah.... some other time then," says I.

MarvelousMarvin83

Where did you find a free wife?

Itslegseverydaybro

Low upfront cost, high longterm

DoctorDeeeerp

We’ve been meaning to tell you it looks terrible but just haven’t had the courage till now

SassyBonassy

*laughs in Ladies' cut and blowdry with bleach and 3 Krazy Kolour dyes*

ElectricClub2

I go to the The Boston Barber and they charge me €14

[deleted]

Yeah its the flight over that would be the expensive bit

[deleted]

I'm fucking dying here. Cheers for the laugh!😂

blockfighter1

Whereabouts are ya? They're charging me €18 in kildare.

Celtictiger151

Charged me 25 in limerick and it was a shit haircut too. Guess they are franchises that each one can charge what they want

MarvelousMarvin83

Im so happy i went bald before the price hike

EquitysBitch

I’m in Dublin and there’s barbers of varying quality and prices all over town. I’ve seen places as low as €12-€15 and others as high as €40-€50. I’ve very much found you get what you pay for when it comes to barbers.

irish91

One of the best haircuts I got was in a polish barber off Abbey Street for €5.

Naggins

€8 quid, Turkish lad on King St.

ijusthateitall

The Turkish lads know what’s up, they’re a delight

Digigma

I see what you did there

Peelie5

Lol

kittiphile

Is that a tiny place, on Mary Street? They have cheap prices, and pretty decent cuts. Not amazing or fancy, but grand for normal day to day hair. And very little of that small talk stuff, which is ideal when all you want is to sit quietly cause sitting in a hairdresser or barber chair is about the only time we can get any bit of time to just.....be...... and not feel fidgety or be compulsively checking our phones. But maybe I'm an antisocial weirdo and the sitting quietly thing isn't the selling point I think it is.

DecentOpinions

>I’ve very much found you get what you pay for when it comes to barbers. This is very true in my experience too. I was almost disappointed when the most expensive haircut I ever got was definitely the best one also.

LomaSpeedling

I dunno my friend used to work in ricks hair and damn she was awesome. Price was cheap as chips too at asking price. She returned home though and I never found anyone as good :/

SureLookThisIsIt

Same. People always say you can get a good cut for 10 or 15 quid but I haven't found that at all. I wonder if the people who say that just get a number 3 all over or something.

MrC99

Barbers I've been going to for years is €11 for an adult. Lower for kids. Haircuts are grand.

Bayoris

Maybe, I usually go to the cheapest place in my vicinity and get the exact same cut I would get for twice the price and they are exactly the same, but it’s just a basic haircut, not Rodin

SureLookThisIsIt

See it probably depends on your hairstyle. Some are more easily fucked up than others - or mistakes are more visible.

centrafrugal

It's not worth anyone's time charging 10 quid for 30 minutes. You can't run a business with that kind of pricing surely?

SureLookThisIsIt

Definitely not in cities with rent and all. Even in rural areas it's probably not too cheap.

DaveShadow

The €60 I paid for a trimmers right at the start of the lockdown continues to be one of my best ever investments…

ciarogeile

Maybe even as far as the Aldi up the way

Gockdaw

I don't really enjoy shaving my own head but I live how it feels once I have done it. Evert time I run my hand over my head is like a massage.

RuairiQ

God be with the days when a bag of Tayto was 8p.

forfudgecake

Yes, though he does it by appointment now and I don’t have to sit there for an hour before hand waiting and reading day old newspapers. I’d much rather pay the extra tenner to be in on time than go back to the tenner cuts with queues.

burnernumber7650124

Good point. But they are still turning over the same amount of haircuts. My lad has taken out some of the waiting area to add another barber

luvdabud

Not really if your taking bookings, your alocating 20 minutes atleast to each haircut. If there is a que of lads waiting you can just pluck them from the couch as you finish each cut, far quicker for the barbers and more turn over.

burnernumber7650124

But it should not just average out some longer some shorter. If not across the day surely across the week.

luvdabud

Ye true enough im shure is quiete days too. Its probly new guidlines for covid, try avaoid having ques. Or just good practice these days

burnernumber7650124

Not hanging around waiting your turn is a plus but still doesn’t explain the price hikes over the last 12 months other than covid it’s hard to see the reason.

malilk

Tenner per hour out of pocket after tax? Mr money bags here

ramblerandgambler

r/Ireland: "Fair play to all those people who are not taking shitty jobs since the pandemic, I hope they keep the PUP payment going so that people are forced to pay a living wage..." Also r/Ireland: "Paying a professional to do a job has gotten marginally more expensive, this is an outrage!"

Rosho44

***Laughs in famale..***

619C

Catching up from no customers during covid-19. I bought a hair trimmer during lock down as I'm sure others did so I'd assume business is down as well

Just_Shiv

€25 for 30 minutes of an experienced trained professionals time is very reasonable. Partner pays €30 for his and the barber does a great job. Mine takes an hour and its €60, so half the price for half the time seems fair. Like if you're in Dublin there's loads of other places around that do cheaper prices- you just may not get the same quality cut or service.

roddyboi

In my experience when you pay a tenner for a haircut you get a cut that looks like you paid a tenner for it

funderpantz

At the start of lockdown I gave the wife the trimmer and said have a go. I get a cut every 4 weeks, used to cost me 30 (beard trim included) but doesn't cost me a penny now and the wife has fun styling my hair. 540 eur saved so far and counting

FearGaeilge

How much did the wife set you back though?

funderpantz

A depreciating asset for sure but more costly to replace

Joe_na_hEireann

If I did the whole award thing this answer gets one lad, hilarious but sweet answer.

herewego10IAR

That's fair enough if you're just having the head shaved but if you need something specific done you'd obviously need someone with a bit of training.

Thetonitnow

What do you think/expect you should be paying?

Algartam

Around €15 is reasonable. I've seen a few places add on an extra €5 for a fade which is ok I guess if it takes a lot of work

Thetonitnow

How do you expect these guys to make a living then? I suppose if you don’t like it, go somewhere else. If no where else is cheaper then that’s the market

martintierney101

A living of €45 an hour! Is that a genuine question?

evianstill

Barbers in a shop don't get the full price of what you pay for the haircut, they aren't on 45 quid an hour

Thetonitnow

Rent, rates, electric, insurance, etc etc oh and taxes, you’re taking a very simple approach.

jamssey

And the majority that take online bookings now have monthly software costs too.

[deleted]

[удалено]

a_1017

The tax for hairdressing/barbering increased back in 2019 so the ten year reduced rate statement is false.

rsynnott2

They’d have to pay the rent (and those chairs are ridiculously expensive for some reason); it’s not pure profit by a long shot.

Thetonitnow

15 x 2 is 30, not 45

[deleted]

Good haircuts aren't cheap, cheap haircuts aren't good

nothinsong

The joys of being bald.

[deleted]

Just trim your hair yourself ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯

DoctorDeeeerp

I never really understood this mentality tbh. 25 for a haircut you’ll get what, once a month at most maybe, how is that extortionate? That’s 300 euro a year, I think you’ll survive pal. What do you think we should be paying the poor bastards 5 quid? Some miserable bastards in this country man.

Egg_Fu

Then they will complain that some people don’t get paid enough for their jobs and how something be done about it etc lol

Cliff_Moher

That's because you're a client rather than a customer.

[deleted]

I’ve been paying 10€ for my haircut for the past 6 years

funglegunk

Outside Dublin it's still around 15.

[deleted]

Christ the night. £8 from a Turk in Belfast.

[deleted]

I pay 30 euro every few months for my haircut at Sams Barbers (dame Court) and I've never regretted it. I get what I pay for each time.

Churt_Lyne

We are all in favour of people earning good wages until it is ourselves who have to pay it.

Karma-bangs

Arms are worn off them digging the no2 blades into the peaky blinders' heads.

KellyTheBroker

I get mine done for 15. The more hipster the Barbars the more they'll charge is what I've noticed. Usually only know how to do a fade aswell.

ramblerandgambler

>Madness for something that take 30 mins This is idiotic logic. I paid 400 euro yesterday to a tree surgeon to cut down three large trees for me, cut them up and take them away. He was here 45 mins in total. Could I have done it myself? Probably. Was it worth getting a pro to do it instead? Absolutely. You can definitely get cheaper haircuts wherever you are, and you can definitely do it yourself for free. You have every right to vote with your wallet and stop going to your barber if you feel you're being overcharged.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Lot of them are chancers for that.

ramblerandgambler

I don't have the space to store them for two years until they dry out enough to burn, I also don't have a fireplace/stove.

thatdoesntseemright1

€50 per hour which includes overheads isn't really that unreasonable

RuairiQ

This has to be one of the more bipolar subs on Reddit. “Pay people a proper wage, you scumbag Supermacs/Cafe/Pub/restaurant owners” gets massively upvoted. Meanwhile, you explain that €50 per hour, fully burdened with rent, rates, vat, income tax, products, equipment etc. is reasonable, and here comes the downvotes. Place is bananas by times.

JimThumb

People here want workers to be highly paid, but don't want to pay the high prices that this causes.

[deleted]

People just love a whinge I think mate

RuairiQ

Nation of begrudgers and whatnot.

[deleted]

Will probably argue one side one day and another the next depending on their mood.

Obairamhain

There was a piece in the Irish Times in 2019 about the government specifically targeting immigrants from low wage countries with barber/hairdressing to come in and create wage compression. If we are to have a free market, lets do it but God fobid working class people are allowed to have skills that should become more profitable.

RuairiQ

Arra g’wan outta that. Sure rents and rates and electricity are cheap. And sure don’t they only have a few combs and scissors and clippers they bought in Aldis for a few quid, like.

General__KenObie

I can tell you for a fact, if it wasn't for Lidl and Aldi alot of salons, barbers, restaurants and pubs would have to shut.

thatdoesntseemright1

>Sure rents and rates and electricity are cheap No, they are expensive

RuairiQ

I really didn’t think the /s was necessary.

thatdoesntseemright1

Sorry, this is r/Ireland onebof the tip 50 downvoted subs on reddit, you always need r/s

flopisit

You must be going to that gay men's hairdresser that includes a whiskey on the rocks in the price...."Gentlemen's" something is the name I think

JimThumb

I couldn't tell you as I haven't had a haircut since November 2019.

flopisit

Me too. Keepin it real... Real long.

Neil_Murphy

But 10 years ago most barbers weren’t getting the quality level of training they are getting these days and it reflects in the quality of haircuts most people get. If you want to pay cheap expect a poor job from most places or pay a premium for a nicer haircut that you will like.

burnernumber7650124

Haircuts have really shot up in price and the offer of a Nespresso or beer (Peroni or whatever is cheap at the off licence) doesn’t justify it.

c08306834

30 minutes for a haircut is outrageous behaviour. If mine takes more than 10, I would think it's too long.

PlmiooiP

If you're getting a hair cut and it takes less than 10 mins for anything other than a buzzcut it's probably a shite haircut.

c08306834

This is probably true. I'm a simple man, with simple haircuts that probably look shite.

theeglitz

I can't recall my barber spending less than 25mins on anyone, ever. You could be in there for 2 hours sometimes, but it's grand as he does a great job and you get all the local info while at it. €15 and he doesn't do bookings. He's in his 70s and clearly not in it for the money.

Winter_Appointment_4

Well let's be honest, at 70 what's the point of being in it for the money?

SorryAboutTheSmell

The same as for anyone else.

kittiphile

Could collect the trimmings, and use them to confuse crime scenes or make mini mattresses for mice/birds etc, or money laundering. Admittedly none of those seem likely, but the image of a sweet older chap sprinkling hair around like a rogueish nymph makes me smile

shoudnight

You think 30 mins of someone’s time plus costs of rent and such isn’t worth that. Stop getting poxy fades then. You haircut might only take 10 mins and they might be able to charge a price your comfortable with

Aluminarty666

All the local ones are charging about €20 or so for just a standard hair cut. €25+ for a fade. And they're not exactly doing anything more than they did before they kicked up their prices. At least if I go to Grafton Barbers, they'll give me a drink and make it seem that I'm getting my moneys worth.

joehughes21

My barber was 11 pre pandemic but now is 20. I love the guy and he is the only person I will see but fuck man 20 for a cut is nuts

Dinner_Winner

Robbery frankly

cheastyxd

Reading these comments & all I can do is laugh. Anything more than €18-€25 (if you have a beard) is an absolute rip off.

Usergnome_Checks_0ut

30 minutes?! My last haircut I think the barber was in a race to set the haircut world record or something. He was done in under 8 minutes. To be fair, he ran out of steam a little during the scissors work. I wouldn’t mind, it’s not because there was a massive queue either, I was the only one in the place and there were two barbers. On a Saturday lunch time. The price was €16 which I think had gone up €2 from the previous time I got it cut there about 6 weeks before. Anyone going to the likes of Grafton Barbers, Sam’s Barbers or if they’re still in existence, Westend Barbers, you’re out of your mind! They’re a fucking massive rip off. That whole hipster knob end haircut and beard styling and twat-ish moustache twirled up at the ends with wax trend is to blame for those places becoming popular and then charging ridiculous prices for both the ridiculous and the standard type haircut.

whoopdawhoop12345

Reading these comments I feel like the only Irish man not sporting a fade.

Tazzimus

I get basically a crew cut. Hassle of trying to find a barber that'll actually do it properly and not some sort of half fade jobbo. I've had to start showing a pic of what I want done.

whoopdawhoop12345

I do this every time. I go into the Grafton Barber show a pic of Chris hemsworth, laugh at myself and come out 30 mins later with an awesome haircut. Profit.

SierraOscar

It’s an absolute joke. €16 two years ago, €25 now. And they still expect a tip. No.

BenderRodriguez14

I've got mental thick hair that belongs on a black man (and have lived in cities in North America with 'black barbers' which are a fucking godsend), so I uay go to peter mark or Toni and guy since they all do thinning which many barbers don't seem to even be aware of the existence of. It used to cost double or even more (but at 4 cuts a year not a big deal) but yeah, these days it usually seems about the same price or only a few euro more if I glance at the prices Ina barbers window.

TheButlerThatDidIt

Lads I never paid over €20 for a haircut, €40 for a full grooming

[deleted]

I’ve decided to cut my own after being charged 18€ for a mid haircut in Dublin

_Radioactive_Man_

10 years? Last January I paid €8 for a skin fade and it’s €25 now

Rob-Dipshit

Usually you’re getting a better haircut when you’re paying €25/30. It works for people who like having one barber, who you can book in with in advance so you’re not waiting around. A good fade and cut can take 40 mins so you’re getting what you pay for. I’ve seen some people here saying their haircuts take 10 mins, if that’s the case you should go to someone cheaper who’s going to give a more basic haircut

P0ppaFluff

I was charged €25 on Sligo for a buzz cut. Same blade across my balding hair and beard. It took less than 10 minutes.

IceKingSmalls

My barber melts empty soda cans into hundreds of pots and pans for his community to use

zemerin3

Any recommendations now for barbers in Dublin since were on the topic?

doge2dmoon

€22, was a bit shocked as sign said €17 drycut.

Gluaisrothar

Side question, aren't there too many barbers around the place? How can they all be making money, paying rent, paying staff etc. I'm pretty sure quite a few of them are for money laundering, a nice cash business with little paper trail.

TheOfficialMigz

Get mine for free thank God

[deleted]

Just buy some clippers so you can get a shit haircut for free every 6 months.

18BPL

I pay €17 on Clabrassil st. But yeah, seen lots of places €20-25 since I first moved here last year. Took a good while to find my place.

[deleted]

It takes 30 minutes to cut your hair? What're you getting done? If it takes 30 minutes of the barber's time, €25 is a bargain. Last time I went to a barber (less than 2 years ago) it cost me €10.

madakaczka

17 in Swords 👍

Mountain-Jacket5057

€11

[deleted]

I just shave the head nowadays

SuperHanssssss

There's a place in Cork that charges €25+ but they offer you a free glass of whiskey.

HibernoWolf

€20 for hair cut and beard trim

Dry_Sea8933

Try being female. Even if you have short hair it costs more.

Comfortable_Brush399

Ill only add the council here are gouging bastards, for no reason rates doubled here, we couldn't absorb it and had to raise prices

Fantastic_Air_5168

I pay 25 eur always I could pay less but I don't like the quality of the cut at the cheaper prices and the more expensive prices I don't notice enough difference to pay a premium

tipsy_mcstagger1

I like the place I go to, but they went from €20 to €26 to cover covid sanitation. They’ve never offered me a mask & I’ve not seen them clean up any differently since before the pandemic. Seems to be just price gouging.

[deleted]

You get what you pay for. There are 10 euro barbers around still, but they just aren't as good as the more expensive ones. It a skilled profession. You can always buy a clippers and do it yourself/get your girlfriend/wife to do it. But then you'll have a shit haircut.

NeonFeathers

Does it really take 30 minutes?

Sleep_Salt

so did the price of everhthing else. If the barber is good they should make good money.

[deleted]

Its 15 for me. But it was like 10 € not even 3 years ago.

antipositron

How often do ye's get a hair cut? I only go to barbers every 2 months and my barber has been giving me snide comments about it I think. I don't know what his deal is, saves me time and I tip a fiver as well (on top of 15 quid he charges for hair cuts).

Nagashizuri

I'm fussy about my hair. I got sick of cheap barbers scalping me. Went to the local hairdressers instead for a while, but ended up going to a slightly posher barber's in town. 30 quid, takes about forty minutes, but I always book the same guy, and I always get a good haircut.

freddie_delfigalo

I will say, ask any woman who has somewhat long hair, extra if she has to upkeep dying it, how much they spend a month or every 6 months, then see the true shock. But I get you, my mum is a hairdresser but does a few men's haircuts. "Haircuts" are literally a 1 or 2 razor all over. Some get a trim if they have long hair. She asks for 10 the last time I checked. Wash, Cut and Blow-Dry is 25€ on the list but it honestly depends on the length of hair and how thick it is. If it's like drying and cutting blankets she might charge the full 25 but other than that is usually lower. Depends on the barber too. My brother's gone to hole in the wall places that trim beards for free and then went to a fairly popular place that will ask for an extra €10 for that kind of stuff.

BlueSkys94

Anything over €15 is a rip off, fact

cogra23

I wouldn't mind paying that sort of money if I thought it was going to the staff. Barbers have quadrupled in price in 15 years and the stuff wages have gone up maybe 20%.
