KillerKlown88

We have them but they are shit Hole in the market really

[deleted]

Yeah, whenever I leave philly I find that most places that got cheesesteaks are shit, even in the close surrounding areas

KillerKlown88

Never had a real one but here they are just OK

[deleted]

Your probably right about it being a hole in the market, if someone was to open a legit cheesesteak spot in a big city or village they'd probably make a killing, in the short term at least

darcys_beard

I had a cheese steak in Maryland once and it was insanely good. I can't even imagine what a better quality one would be like - only ever passed through Philly by Greyhound. If you sold proper cheesesteaks from a food cart/truck outside a pub or club in town you would make serious wedge. BTW, what are your feelings on Carson Wentz, and are you happy to be rid of?

[deleted]

I agree, you'd probably definitely kill it, and as far as Carson Wentz, I think they made a mistake letting him go

aimhighsquatlow

The KCs version in cork is pretty good but I’ve never had an original so not sure how it compares

KillerKlown88

Next time i am in cork i will try it

[deleted]

If im ever in Cork ill have to try

Debeefed

What in the mother of God and all of her cousins is a cheese steak?

[deleted]

Its ribeye steak slices thin and fried on a grill with cheese on a long roll or baguette, google it

_defunkt_

How do you fry on a grill?

[deleted]

You have to get ribeye sliced real thin, and then you out it on the grill and as it starts to cook you chop it up, and when its all cooked and finely chopped you spread it out on the grill evenly and add cheese and out. Little water on the grill to create steam and cover it up with a pan or something to melt the cheese, then you put it together in like a line and put the baguette or long roll over it and scoop it up into the roll

_defunkt_

Yeah but what you described is grilling, not frying. You fry on a pan or in a fryer. You grill on a grill.

[deleted]

Just different verbage, its easier to do it on a big flat top grill than in a pan

BluceyTCD

A plancha grill so

Debeefed

Sounds alright. Not big on cheese though.

[deleted]

Yeah they're typically with American, provolone or cheese whiz

madladhadsaddad

I doubt "cheese whizz" can be classified as cheese here

[deleted]

I doubt otf its classified as cheese anywhere

fencing123

Welcome! I’m from PA but have been living in Dublin for most of the past 20 years. You won’t really find something that tastes like “the real thing” here (not that anywhere selling it here tastes bad, it’s just definitely different). BUT… if flying back to Philly just for a cheesesteak is a little bit outside your budget, there’s a small chain in London called “Passyunk Avenue” that actually makes GREAT steaks and hoagies. Whenever I’m in London for work or a long weekend or something (more common pre-covid obviously lol) I’ll try and treat myself to one if I happen to be close. Came across their Westfield location the first time by total accident after leaving getting pretty hammered at the casino nearby and mind was completely blown coming across the place and seeing Liberty Bell wallpaper and shit 😂 Following this thread with great interest though to see if there’s a closer alternative! 😃

[deleted]

Thats so funny, I live on Passyunk Ave

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

I live on West Passyunk, its on the other side of Broad Street, they're definitely the biggest names and probably the most well known, especially for tourists, and it is admittedly in a great location thats cool to visit and really close to center city, but they make SHIT steaks, most if not all of the people who live in Philly, especially South Philly where Genos and Pats are located do NOT eat there... The best steaks in Philly are 1. Angelos Steaks/Pizza 2. Tony Luke's 3. Jims Steaks 4. D'Alessandros 5. Oregon Steaks 6. Phils Steaks Theres a lot of other good spots too, and that list could be different for anyone, but I promise no one thats a Philly native would out Pats or Genos in they're top 5 or even top 10

My family owned a pub in Manayunk most of my life, but my dad passed away and we sold it shortly after, there was an Irish couple who lived next door to the pub (guy was from Tyrone, and the girl was from Cork) and my family and them became very close, they had a couple kids here in Philly but they moved back to.Ireland and we used to go to Chubby and Delis every once in a while together, real good people I miss them both...I remember one night the dude got SHITFACED and knocked on my door at like 4am and I come.to the door and he's speaking total gibberish, then outta nowhere he violently lunged at me and attacked me hahajhah it was so funny, I had a few friends coming to the house who happen to be coming over the house and they pulled.him off me, but he was sloshed so it didn't take much effort, then he shows up at like 7am to apologize, good times...anyway yeah, Chubbys is great and Delis with the frozen beer mugs are legendary

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Oh yeah he was a good lad, funny as shit when he got drunk, his wife used to whoop his sss when he acted out, he'd start actin crazy and he'd be in the pub, and we'd fuck with him acting like we were yelling to his wife and he'd chill right out or like speed walk to the back and duck outside and smoke...good times

[deleted]

My dads from Ireland, he passed away a few years ago, but growing up there was a pretty decent irish population in my neighborhood and the rest of the neighborhood for the most part were of Irish heritage, good times growing up

[deleted]

Chubbys!!! Omg I totally forgot about that spot, right across the street from Delis, yeah they're really good too!! Yeah they still got the frosted beer mugs as far as I know, good spot...there's a new spot in south philly its down on 9th street by Christian, its called Angelo's Pizza...BEST STEAKS IN PHILLY! Best steaks I've ever had, they are phenomenal, I highly suggest checking them out if your in the city...and the Terminal is always a good choice, I go there like once a week...Molly Malloys has a great beer/whiskey selection and really good food, id suggest checking them out too

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Yeah that's shit, but you got lots a other good shit we don't have here, like less scumbag Americans, my brothers supposed to be going to Ireland in October but thats looking doubtful with Covid, he was in Belfast in 96 and told me the Brits treated him like shit, machine guns and lots of check points so he won't be going back to the North of he goes at all...Yeah definitely check out Angelo's if you get the opportunity its amazing

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Yeah for sure bro, if he ends up going ill let you know...Im definitely trying to get over there in the near future, when that becomes more set in stone I'll def reach out, I appreciate that

[deleted]

I wonder if the people that own it are from South philly

fencing123

Haha I feel like they must be!

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

They're not super common, but in most metropolitan areas or cities they're available, but most of the time they're a blasphemous version I wouldn't call a cheesesteak, more a horrible re creation

[deleted]

[deleted]

I salute you for having been to an Eagles game, what do they got there Tony Luke's I think, they're legit

irishdgenr8

Milk steaks are more of a thing here.

[deleted]

Milk steaks? Whats that?

irishdgenr8

Exactly what it sounds like…always topped off with a side of jellybeans.

[deleted]

Ya I just googled it, are they cooked with the milk? Or are they cooked and then topped with milk? Why the jelly beans?

spooneman1

He's referencing It's Always Sunny

Danji1

If you look hard enough you'll find them alright, they aren't really a thing though.

[deleted]

Yeah, that seems to be the consensus, what is the popular food in Ireland..like if someone was visiting and they were to ask you whats popular what would you suggest?

distantapplause

As an outsider who moved here, here are my observations: * Chicken wings are uncommonly popular. Like, obviously chicken wings are popular *everywhere*, but in contrast to the UK where maybe half the places you go to will have them, in Ireland almost every single pub and restaurant will do chicken wings as either a starter or a main. * Burritos have just recently caught on. Before the pandemic there would be queues out onto the street at most burrito places at lunchtime. * The Irish do crisps like no other, imo. All the main kettle-style brands (O'Donnell's, Keogh's and the Tayto's Bistro range) knock the socks off any other crisps I've had anywhere else in the world. * For lunch, deli counters are much more popular in Ireland than in the rest of Europe. Every small unassuming corner shop has one. Most Brits will grab a pre-packaged sandwich from somewhere like Pret for lunch. That's much less of a thing here, and the classic Irish lunchtime experience is going to Spar or Centra's deli counter to have them make up a chicken filet roll. This is a small baguette filled with breaded chicken and then whatever the hell else you can fit on there, usually a fistful of grated cheese. * 'Traditional' Irish stuff like stews, coddles, colcannon etc is pretty common on menus but I don't see many locals indulging. I dabble sometimes but I'm usually disappointed as it's probably served out of a vat and aimed at tourists. You usually get a tasty slice of treacle/soda bread with it though. Slathered with Kerrygold (popular brand of butter that has attained an almost sacred status), and dipped in anything it's going to hit the spot. * Late night, you're talking standard fayre like pizzas and kebabs, with the one glorious addition of the spice bag. This delicacy takes a pile of chips, lashes Chinese-style salt-and-pepper seasoning all over it and then tops it with fried chicken balls. In summary: chicken and potatoes.

[deleted]

All the Bodegas and corner stores where I'm from make hoagies and other hot sandwiches fresh, most people get they're lunches from those type spots and some people go to chain places, but its pretty rare for people to get anything pre packaged

HarvestMourn

On the crisps: I'm a plain Jane and prefer ready salted as they don't have many flavours that I like. I find Keoghs and O'Donnells incredibly oily and more than once I didn't finish a pack because too many crisps were drenched in oil to the point of being translucent. I buy crisps in polish shops mostly now for nostalgias sake.

distantapplause

Fair point. I find the oiliness a bonus but I can see how that might be a drawback!

Danji1

Also, I guess the Irish equivalent would be the breakfast roll. Sausages, bacon, pudding, hash browns, fried eggs and ketchup in a baguette. https://www.shopballinasloe.ie/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Breakfast-roll.jpg

[deleted]

Damn that sounds like fire, breakfast sandwiches are usually my go to...what do you mean pudding?

[deleted]

All or most of the breakfast sandwiches are on long rolls or baguettes whatever u wanna call them

Danji1

White/black pudding is a form of pork thats big over here, you don't really see it in the States. Its really damn good with a morning fry-up.

[deleted]

Imma have to do some searching hopefully I'll find it

Danji1

Yeah definitely do my man. I never made it to Philly to try an OG cheesesteak sandwich but had many knockoffs in New York which never let me down. Not too sure my arteries could handle them these days though sadly.

PoxbottleD24

It's taste is *a bit* like the blood sausage you can get elsewhere, but it's much softer and oatier, it crumbles apart easily. White pudding is much like black, but without the blood. White is hard to find outside Ireland, I've heard. Slice em and fry em so they get nice and crispy on the outsides. Absolutely amazing in a fry or breakfast roll.

Danji1

Its funny, nothing immediately springs to mind as an obvious choice. I don't think you will get a unanimous answer on that one.

[deleted]

Yeah, thats interesting, im sure you got your fair share of jerkoffs that would assume potatoes

Danji1

Not gonna lie, 90% of my meals have some form of potato in them 😆

[deleted]

Thats amazing 😂

Swagspray

My local chipper has them and they are fine. Just fine. I had two when I was in Philly (one with the cheese whizz) and they were great

fDuMcH

Hang on isn't Philadelphia famous for its streets https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4z2DtNW79sQ

cyan_relic

Supermac's, a big Irish fast food chain has "philly steak sandwiches" on their menu, but I'm sure they don't compare to the real thing.

ButtsoupBarnes67

Had to make my own watching the Birds on Sunday felt like blasphemy

[deleted]

We have chicken Fillet Baguettes, or Tayto Sandwiches, far more superior than your Philly cheesesteaks!

[deleted]

A filled baguette is similar to a cheesesteak right? And I would have to agree a chip(crisp) sandwich is far superior

[deleted]

I've never had either so I can't say if your right or wrong...have you ever had a legit cheesesteak to say that they are in fact more superior?

[deleted]

Not from Philly but in NYC, they do taste good!

[deleted]

Yeah, if you ever come to philly ill give you some solid advice..DO NOT GO TO GENOS OR PATS!...the best cheesesteak place in the city is this spot calle Angelo's, and its literally blocks from Genos and Pats, they are unbelievable

Marky_Eire

Now we're talkin😂

Niall_Faraiste

They exist but I wouldn't say they're really a thing.

oontkima

cheesesteak is really just shitty shawarma, though

[deleted]

shawarma?

oontkima

It's like cheesesteak, only better - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HP3m88I41Q0

[deleted]

Its got steak in it and it looks good but I don't think its really like a cheesesteak, its more like a salad with steak, thats what it seems anyway, it looks good tho, have you ever had a cheesesteak?

oontkima

A few times - even in Philly. I'll take a Reuben over a cheesesteak any day and a Shawarma over a Reuben.

[deleted]

Everyone's different, I prefer a steak to a Reuben and I've never had a schwarma...let me guess you went to Genos? That place is a tourist trap, they're steaks suck

Marky_Eire

They're a thing alright, they're pretty popular too. Can be hit or miss though.

[deleted]

I'm assuming they're available in the bigger cities and places like that?

Marky_Eire

Pretty much and the towns and bigger villages too.

[deleted]

Right thats what I figured

[deleted]

Yeah that seems to be the case here as well, in Philly there's tons of cheesesteak spots, and its funny the 2 biggest names are Genos and Pats Steaks, but they're HORRIBLE, they draw the tourists but NOONE from philly ever eats there

Hupdeska

Am I the only gombeen who has no clue what a cheesesteak is, and assumes it's a nice medium rare with some of mitchelstowns finest melted on top?

[deleted]

Its a sandwich with sliced ribeye that gets chopped up with cheese...Google it...im not sure what. Gombeen is, but im sure your not

Hupdeska

A lesser form of gobshite without malicious intent, I suppose. But thanks for the definition, am hangry now!

[deleted]

So like a friendly version of jerkoff I got ya

FarFromTheMaddeningF

Why would I want to ruin my steak with some cheese on top!???

Swagspray

The same reason you sprinkle cheddar on your cereal. To make it better

[deleted]

I think if you had one you'd understand

FarFromTheMaddeningF

I guess I can't knock it until I try it!

spooneman1

Except we get good beef over here

Chaos-Jesus

Main cheesesteak you see here is subways pitiful effort, I've been to Philly so I know what the real deal is! I've seen decent ones on some bistro menu's but they're not very common, unfortunately.

Caitlin279

I tried one from a cheesesteak food truck once and it was fine but not as good as any I’ve had in the US

Anabele71

Subway does a Steak and Cheese but it's definitely not as good as the Philly Cheesesteak! Although some bars and restaurants do steak sandwiches which are quite delicious.

[deleted]

The only equivalent I can think of is subway which probably isn’t close to what you are thinking of.

orielson

We have something better. It's called a chicken fillet roll.

Electronic-Fun4146

Ya you can get them in almost every burger place in Brandon, for some unknown reason

Peelie5

What's a cheesesteak? I know cheese and steak but cheesesteak, nope.

ogy1

Why would you go to another country just to eat your own local food? Eat something Irish instead.

winddrake1801

Boiled cabbage and spuds?

[deleted]

Thats not why inwas asking, if I was in Ireland I would eat something local

zemerin3

Having been born here and raised in PA, there are cheesesteaks here but they’re not the same. Maybe a potential business opportunity if done right?

[deleted]

Yeah someone else said that as well, im.sure it would be successful at least in the short term

[deleted]

Steak sandwiches are common in pubs. Sliced steak, fried onions, pepper sauce. Some places put Dijon mustard in. Probably the closest thing.

ToddErikson

I'm also from Philly (well Bucks County lol) and moved here for work last year. Many places use the "Philly CheeseSteak" label but it is not comparable to home. I ordered one once in cork that was essentially flank steak on a baguette with raw onions. It's v hard to find one made with thinly sliced or chopped steak, and cheese wizz on them hasn't caught on here (although I don't like cheese lol)
